Mark M. Harper
Mark McDonald Harper, 43, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, following heart surgery.
Burial will be Aug. 7 in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.
Mr. Harper was born Sept. 21, 1955, in Sioux City, the son of D.M. and Jeanne (Momsen) Harper. He graduated from Central High School and the University of South Dakota.
He served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was in the Special Forces (Green Beret). For a number of years he was commander of a scuba team. He served in Alaska, Europe, South and Central America and Africa, attaining the rank of major.
He graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science nursing degree. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, attaining the rank of captain.
He was employed as a registered nurse for the State of California.
He was a member of the Sioux City Underwater Recovery Squad and attained the highest rank for cadets in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a pilot and an expert marksman, participating in numerous competitions. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; three daughters, Jackie of Virginia, Janine and Alexis, both of California; two brothers, John of Sioux City and Scott of Hawaii; his father and stepmother, Deborah Hanson; two aunts; an uncle; and a cousin.
He was preceded in death by his mother, paternal and maternal grandparents.

Joseph J. Thomas, 76, of Sioux City died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy ill ness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Headley, pastor of Open Bible Standard Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Thomas was born April 1, 1922, in Wagner, S.D., the son of James Arthur and Romana Elizabeth (Cross) Thomas.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1965, during World War II and the Korean War.
He was a member of Open Bible Standard Church.
Survivors include four brothers and their wives, Jesse W. and Jean of Sioux City, Paul D. and Sharon of Loveland, Colo., Edward P. and Laura of San Antonio, Texas, and Wallace G. and Maxine of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a sister and her husband, Marlene E. and Paul Cleary of Indianapolis, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Arthur E. and Delbert.

Marie Vander Stouwe
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Marie Vander Stouwe, 84, of Sioux Center died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center, with the Rev. John Den Hoed officiating. Private graveside services will be prior to the memorial service.
Mrs. Vander Stouwe was born Feb. 7, 1914, the daughter of Jacob and Jeanette (Vande Hoef) Van Voorst. She attended various country schools.
She married Henry Vander Stouwe on Jan. 15, 1936.
She was a member of Netherlands Reformed Church, West Branch Homemakers and Netherlands Reformed Ladies Aide. She enjoyed crocheting and cross stitch.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, John and Bernie of California, Jay and Kay and Mark and Judy, all of Sioux Center and Ken and Lydia of Perkins, Iowa; a daughter, Jeanine Wimmer of Rapid City, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Maurice and Lucy of Rock Valley, Iowa, and James and Greta of Sioux Center; three sisters, Gert Hoogendoom and Jeanette and her husband, Bill Vanden Top, all of Rock Valley, and Henrietta and her husband, George Vonk, of Sioux Center; and three sisters-in-law, Jennie Van Voorst of Rock Valley, Jeanette Van Voorst of Orange City, Iowa, and Alice Van Voorst of Sioux Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband; six brothers, Jake, John, Henry, Sam, Harry and William; and a sister, Hendrieka as a child.
Pallbearers will be Bob Koerselman, Rod Hames, Troy, Travis and Eric Vander Stouwe and Jamey Schiebout.

ALTON, Iowa - Elsie Jean Bloemendaal, 59, of rural Alton died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Dennis Hietbrink officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8:30 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mrs. Bloemendaal was born April 11, 1939, near Carmel, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Cynthia (Van Marel) Cleveringa. She attended the Carmel Country School and graduated from Sioux Center (Iowa) High School. She attended Nettleton Business School, after which she was employed at Hull Bakery and the Rock Valley Elevator.
She married Larry Lee Bloemendaal on June 26, 1959, in Carmel. She was employed at Vogel Paint Store in Orange City and then was a homemaker. Later she worked at Southtown Bakery in Orange City and Wal-Mart in Sioux Center. The couple were custodians at the Orange City Medical Clinic.
She was a member of Newkirk Reformed Church.
Survivors include her husband; six daughters, Brenda and her husband, Darrell Blackmore, and Sandra and her husband, Arlan Britt, all of Le Mars, Iowa, Wanda and her husband, Steven Gerzel, of Gurnee, Ill., Paula Bloemendaal of Portland, Ore., Donna and her husband, Keith Westhoff, of Struble, Iowa, and Tamara Bloemendaal of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Alicia and Corey Blackmore, Andrew, Angela, Stacia, Steven and Christopher Britt, Sabrina and Brandon Gerzel, and Brittany and Brady Westhoff; her mother of Sioux Center; two sisters and their husbands, Carolyn and Rich Odens of Harrisburg, S.D., and Colleen and Dave Bomgaars of Sioux Center; a brother and his wife, Calvin and Lois Cleveringa of Sioux Center; her mother-in-law, Matilda Ter Horst of Orange City; three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Connie and Alden Menning and Barb and El Top, all of Orange City and Ardis and Brad Van Rooyen of Alden, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and an infant daughter, Lisa Gail.
Bruce A. Bethke
HARTLEY, Iowa - Bruce Allen Bethke, 52, of Hartley died Monday, July 27, 1998, of respiratory complications from polio.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley, with the Rev. Milo Sheldon officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Warner Funeral Home in Hartley.
Mr. Bethke was born April 7, 1946, in Hartley, the son of Ralph and Elaine (Rossman) Bethke. He was raised in Hartley and graduated from Hartley High School in 1964. He received his degree in business from Mankato Commerical College in Mankato, Minn.
He was employed as a computer programmer at Spencer Foods and was currently self-employed as a farmer.
He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ. He enjoyed drag racing and feeding birds.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Elaine and Paul Heilman of Hartley; a sister and her husband, Nola and Steve Penland of Des Moines; and a niece and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Clara Bernice Mathews, 85, of Spirit Lake died Monday in Spirit Lake.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery, Storm Lake, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids.
Marion Klarenbeek
LE MARS, Iowa - Marion Klarenbeek, 66, of Le Mars died Monday, July 27, 1998, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at United Presbyterian Church in Boyden, Iowa, with the Rev. John Goertz officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Township Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Mr. Klarenbeek was born Sept. 23, 1931, near Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Ida Marie (Jensen) Klarenbeek. He attended country school near Edna, Iowa, and graduated from Rock Rapids High School.
He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon, Ga., in 1950. He received an honorable discharge in March of that year. He lived in Ash Creek, Minn., for two years, then moved to Boyden. He entered The Abbey in Le Mars in 1994.
Survivors include his mother of Sheldon, Iowa; and a sister, Genevieve Horn of Boyden.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Pallbearers will be Delbert and Arnold Hoogers, Duane and Loren Schafer, Gene Egdorf and Bill Reimers.
Glenn D. Gronemeyer
AKRON, Iowa - Glenn D. Gronemeyer, 70, of Hawarden, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at the Royal C. Johnson Veteran's Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, with the Rev. Allen Bidne officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brunsville, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Wilken-McHale Post 724 of Brunsville. There will be a F-16 flyover by the 185th Air National Guard at the cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Mr. Gronemeyer was born June 9, 1928, in rural Akron, the son of William and Evelyn (Smith) Gronemeyer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended country school in the Craig, Iowa, area. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a medic. Following his discharge, he moved to the Le Mars, Iowa, area.
He married Darlene Plueger in 1951, in rural Le Mars. He ran a feed grindery mill and also managed gas stations in Le Mars. He returned to Akron in 1989. He married Evelyn (Marienau) Klemme on Jan. 7, 1992, in Akron.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and American Legion Wilken-McHale Post 724, where he served as vice commander.
Survivors include his wife; his mother of Le Mars; two daughters and their husbands, Sheryl and Winston Belfrage of Sergeant Bluff and Barbara and Nolan Schuler of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons and their wives, Greg and LeeAnn of Le Mars and Richard and Leanne of Fort Hood, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Korey, Wendy, Kyle and Brittni Behr, Brandi and Ben Schuler, Luke Gronemeyer, Jennifer and Kevin Vaske, and Troy Lang; three great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters and their husbands, Gloria and Mark Kowalke of Sioux City, Gail and Bob Walrod of Akron and Ellen and Chuck Renken of Chatsworth, Iowa; four sisters, Jean Hartmann of Le Mars, Mildred and her husband, Wayne Winterfeld, of Ord, Neb., Edith and her husband, Ron Sechler of Meriden, Iowa, and Norma and her husband, Tom Flint, of Wilmer, Ala.; and a sister-in-law, Verlee Gronemeyer of Meriden.
He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Dorothy; a brother, Russell; and a brother-in-law, Ray Hartmann.
Pallbearers will be Korey and Kyle Behr, Mike Winterfeld, Troy Lang, Sam Skogman and Austin Walrod.
Cornelia Frazier
SANTEE, Neb. - Rebecca Cornelia Frazier, 87, of Santee died Monday, July 27, 1998, at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Santee Community Gymnasium, with the Rev. Mercy Hobbs officiating. Burial will be in L'Eau Qui Court, Niobrara, Neb. Arrangements are under the direction of Brockhaus Funeral Home in Niobrara.
Mrs. Frazier was born Jan. 23, 1911, at the Santee Sioux Reservation of Nebraska, the daughter of Henry and Nina (Johnson) Goodteacher. She attended Genoa (Neb.) Indian Boarding School.
She married Daniel Frazier on Sept. 17, 1931, in Elk Point, S.D. She was employed for many years at a nursing home in Niobrara, before moving to Santee in 1972. In Santee, she worked with several community programs. In later years she was a coordinator for the elderly through the Intertribal Corp. in Winnebago, Neb.
She was a member of Our Most Merciful Savior Episcopal Church in Santee.
Survivors include her nephews and cousins and their families.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wakonda, with the Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene, S.D.
Mrs. McCarty was born Dec. 17, 1935, in rural Wakonda, the daughter of Maurice and Arlene (Olson) Dwyer. She attended Frog Creek Rural School and graduated from Wakonda Public School in 1953.
She married John "Jack" McCarty on Feb. 15, 1955, in Wakonda. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Altar Society.

Betty F. Severn, 65, of Sioux City died Wednesday at the Casa de Paz Care Center following a lenghty illness.
Commemorative services will be held during a portion of the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Immanuel Lutheran Church. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

MOVILLE, Iowa - Doris LaVonne Ryan, 78, of Florissant, Mo., formerly of Moville, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, in St. Louis.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Moville, with Monsignor Roger J. Augustine officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today at McCulloch Funeral Home in Moville.
Mrs. Ryan was born April 9, 1920, in Sioux City, the daughter of Ed and Gertrude (DeLaughter) Bush.
She married Vincent L. Ryan on Aug. 23, 1941, in Bremerton, Wash. The couple lived in Moville and Sergeant Bluff in the early 1960s. They moved to St. Louis in 1964. She was a homemaker. He died Jan. 15, 1991.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Lynda and Robert Baker; three sons, Lyle, Lynn and his wife, Beverly, and Ronald and his wife, Lisa; two sisters, Fern Haring and Phyllis and her husband, Harley Ramthun; a brother-in-law, Harvey Robinson; five grandchildren, Larina, Michael, Erin, Dennis and Lyndsey; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry Dean; and two sisters, Louise Robinson and Lois Steinhauer.

Lawrence Ganaway Jr., 37, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 26, 1998, of an accidental drowning.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. Henry C. McGruder officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
Mr. Ganaway was born Nov. 17, 1960, in Sioux City, the son of Lawrence J. and Lessie V. (Jackson) Ganaway Sr. He graduated from North High School in 1980.
He was employed with Mossberg Sanitation Services in Sioux City. He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his parents; a brother and his wife, LaVerne G. and Dawn M. of Denver; two sisters and their husbands, Vanessa M. and Ronnie Robinson of Long Beach, Calif., and Shirley and Bud Clifton of Denver; a niece, three nephews, six aunts and five uncles.

Gus L. Luke, 82, of Sioux City died Wednesday at his daughter's residence in Phoenix, Ariz., following a lengthy illness.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Arta Huisman, 92, of Orange City died Thursday at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Reformed Church in Orange City. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 2 to 3:30 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Ruth C. Phillips
WALTHILL, Neb. - Ruth C. Phillips, 53, of Walthill died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at a nursing home in Lincoln, Neb.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Alfred W. Gilpin Community Building in Macy, Neb., with Elmer Blackbird in charge. Visitation will be at the home of Lois Harlan in Walthill until Sunday. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh Funeral Home of Pender, Neb.
Miss Phillips was born March 14, 1945, in Winnebago, Neb., the daughter of Mae Phillips. She had lived in Macy as a child. She lived in Lincoln in the 1960s, and moved to the Walthill-Macy area in 1986.
Survivors include a son, Scott Phillips of Lincoln; three daughters, Marcya Phillips of Walthill, Angela Faytinnger of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Julie Crocker of Missouri; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Harlan and Patricia Phillips, both of Walthill.
She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother, Percy.
