Ervin A. Jahn
UTE, Iowa - Ervin August Jahn, 84, of Gillette, Wyo., formerly of the Ute, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Gillette.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.
Mr. Jahn was born Aug. 26, 1915, in Ute, the son of Carl and Dora (Timm) Jahn. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended Lutheran Parochial School.
He married Dorothy Mae Gran on June 15, 1939, in Ute. The couple lived on the Jahn family farm near Ute until 1955, when they moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. He was employed with Everitt Lumber Co. in Colorado Springs. In 1963, they purchased the Coast to Coast Store in Wheatland, Wyo. They moved to Gillette in 1977.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Gillette, and active in the Lutheran churches in the communities where he lived. He served on the Senior Center board of directors in Gillette.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carol Faye Jahn of Gillette and Maxine Jahn Riley and her husband, Robert Steadman Riley of Augusta, Ga.; two grandchildren, David James Jahn and Pamela Reynolds Slawson; a great-granddaughter; a brother and his wife, Walter and Edna of Ute; a sister and her husband, Erma and Louis Sander of Ute; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert; and two sisters, Lydia Jahn and Arlene (Jahn) Rude.
Pallbearers will be his grandson and nephews, David Jahn, Norman Eggen, Brent and Craig Friedrichs, Austin, Gailen and Jim Gran, Dennis and Evan Jahn, Gary Jespersen, Ronald and Roger Rude and Dale Stockfleth.
John E. Strohm
John E. Strohm, 68, of Sioux City died Monday at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with military rites conducted by American Legion Monahan Post 64. The body was cremated. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to service Thursday at the funeral home.
Elmer Bargholz
WAKEFIELD, Neb. - Elmer Bargholz, 70, of Wakefield died Monday at Wakefield Health Care Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne, Neb. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Schumacher-Hasemann Funeral Home in Wayne.
Harold R. Fassler
LINN GROVE, Iowa - Harold Roy Fassler, 73, of Linn Grove died Monday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Churchy in Linn Grove. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery, Storm Lake, Iowa. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.
Vance E. Spink
KINGSLEY, Iowa - Vance E. Spink, 75, of Kingsley died Tuesday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Kingsley. Burial will be in Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley.
Raymond W. Nelson
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Raymond Walter Nelson, 78, of Storm Lake died Tuesday at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery, Holstein, Iowa. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Barker Funeral Home in Alta, Iowa.
Shirley M. Helm
HINTON, Iowa - Shirley, Mae Helm, 49, of Hinton died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thurs day at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Merrill Muller of Goodwill Industries officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Helm was born March 12, 1950, in Sioux City, the daughter of Sebastian and Caroline (VanDerWilt) Groendyk.
She graduated from Leeds High School in 1968. She received her degree in computer science from Western Iowa Tech Community College.
She married Jeff J. Helm on Sept. 21, 1991, in Hinton.
She was employed as an office manager at Dakota Dunes. She enjoyed boating, cooking, gardening and traveling.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Lisa and her husband, Randy Raskin, of Lenexa, Kan., and Robyn Clemon of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Henry and Janet Groendyk and Edwin and Jane Groendyk, all of Sioux City; three sisters and their husbands, Carolyn and Chuck Keleher and Elizabeth and Jim Windes, all of Sioux City, and Mary Ann and Dennis Naeve of Toddville, Iowa; two grandchildren, Lindsay and Rachel Raskin; her mother, of Sioux City; a sister-in-law and her husband, Jill Helm Sparks and Dave of Sioux City; her father and mother-in-law, John and Blanche Helm of Hinton; a special friend, Tucker Helm; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and a daughter, Julie Clemon.
Pallbearers will be Clark and Andy Johnson, Joe and Diane Hendricks and Glen and Kay Green.
Mildred L. O'Donnell
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Mildred L. O'Donnell, 95, of Holstein, Iowa, formerly of Ida Grove, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Holstein.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. Roslyn Gunnink officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Sunny Hill Cemetery, Grimes, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mrs. O'Donnell was born Jan. 28, 1904, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Leslie and Nora (Muncie) Verner.
She graduated from a Council Bluffs high school in 1920, then attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She graduated from Drake University in 1969, with a bachelor of science degree in education.
She taught at a country school before moving to What Cheer, Iowa, then to Exira, Iowa.
She married Steven L. O'Donnell on June 11, 1927, in State Center, Iowa.
She was the elementary school principal at Guthrie Center, Iowa for one year in 1927. She then taught in Grimes for one year. The couple lived in several Iowa towns including Elkhart, Shelby and Primghar, before moving to Ida Grove in 1951. In 1967 she began teaching junior high English and social studies in Ida Grove, retiring in 1970.
In 1972, she became the activities director at Morningside Manor. She retired in November 1974.
She was a member of Eastern Star, Teachers Sorority and Iowa State Education Association. She was active in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and on the session.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Robert Clark of Urbandale, Iowa, and Janet and Arthur Banks of Boston, Mass.; two grandchildren, Michael Robert Clark and Kevin Jospeh Nelson.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen; and a sister, Alice Taylor.
Memorials may be directed to Good Samaritan Center in Holstein.
John I. Cox
SUTHERLAND, Iowa - John I. Cox, 66, of Sutherland died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sutherland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dean O. McPherson officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at his residence. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Peterson, Iowa. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by Abiff Lodge 347, at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.
Mr. Cox was born April 9, 1933, in Clay County, Iowa, the son of John Humphrey and Clara (Riley) Cox. He graduated from Peterson High School, Peterson, Iowa.
He married Doris Wetherell on April 2, 1952, in Peterson. She died June 4, 1972. He married Jan Amos on Oct. 18, 1979, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
He farmed until retiring in 1989. He had lived in Sutherland for 15 years.
He was a member of Sutherland United Methodist Church, Abiff Lodge 347 of Sutherland, Sioux City Consistory, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, Order of the Eastern Star and O'Brien County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, a daughter and her husband, Penny and Robert Lundell of Cherokee; three sons, Randy of Cherokee, Billy and his wife, Carol, of Sutherland and David and his wife, Connie, of Cleremont, Fla.; two stepsons, James Dean Kent of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Kenneth and his wife, Melissa, of Bondurant, Iowa; a stepdaughter and her husband, Terri and Leonard Murray of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and two sisters, Garnett Brown of San Diego, Calif., and Audrey Goettsche of Sioux Rapids, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Solomon; and a brother-in-law, Lyle Brown.
Earl H. Cipperley
WASHTA, Iowa - Earl H. Cipperley, 85, formerly of Washta, died Monday at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa, following a sudden illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m., at Ida Grove United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Sunset View Cemetery, Washta. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Irene Goodall Cleveland
MAPLETON, Iowa - Irene Fern Goodall Cleveland, 77, of Kingman, Ariz., formerly of Mapleton, died Friday, April 23, 1999, in Kingman.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Shirley Textor officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, near Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Mrs. Cleveland was born Jan. 1, 1922, in Smithland, Iowa, the daughter of John and Marvel (Anderson) Junk. She was raised in Coleridge, Neb., and graduated from Coleridge High School in 1938.
She married Kenneth Goodall on Nov. 8, 1941, in Denison, Iowa. The couple began farming in the Mapleton area in 1945. In 1984, they moved into Mapleton. He died Dec. 26, 1985.
She married Everett Cleveland on Jan. 11, 1989, in Chatsworth, Calif. The couple moved to Kingman in 1990.
She was a member of St. John's United Methodist church and Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Roger and Joni Goodall of Oxnard, Calif., and Raymond and Virginia Goodall of Walker, Iowa; three daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Mark Dimig of Sacramento, Calif., Janet and Jack Braton of Kansas City, Mo., and JoAnn and Del Twidt of Fountain City, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; and three sisters, Ruth and her husband, Verland Barber, of Platte Ccenter, Neb., Pearla Benjamin and Betty and her husband, LeRoy Etchenkamp, all of Wayne, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Gladys and Aletha; and two brothers, Dale and Don.
