Iona Clarey
AKRON, Iowa - Iona Clarey, 71, of Akron died Friday, April 6, 2001, at her residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Monsignor Richard Zenk officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a Scripture prayer service at 7 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Mrs. Clarey was born Sept. 21, 1929, in Akron, S.D., the daughter of Andrew and Leota (Bogner) Trometer. She graduated from Akron High School in 1947. She married William J. Clarey on Nov. 3, 1948. She was employed as a clerk with the G-W grocery store, Casey's and as a cook's assistant with the Akron-Westfield School.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She enjoyed crafts, gardening and working in the yard.
Survivors include her husband; four sons and their wives, William D. and Cynthia of Greybull, Wyo., Terry and Lynette, and Randy and Lisa, all of Akron, and Andy and Kathy of Rock Valley, Iowa; two daughters, Linda and her husband, Todd Degen of Ireton, Iowa, and Beki Clarey of South Sioux City; three sisters, Alice Harvey of Akron, Jeanette McPherson of Hawarden, Iowa, and Neva Hawks of Akron; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Merlin and Melvin Trometer; and two sisters, Blanche Trometer and Marilyn Titus.
Pallbearers will be Mike Harvey, Mike Hawks, Larry Clarey, Joe Clarey, Orin Blake and Jerry McPherson.

H. Bernard Vande Griend
HULL, Iowa - Henry Bernard Vande Griend, 73, of Hull died Friday, April 6, 2001, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Carl Klompien officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
Mr. Vande Griend was born April 13, 1927, in Hull, the son of Jake H. and Anna (Zwagerman) Vande Griend. He was raised in Hull, where he graduated from Western Christian High School. He served in the U.S. Army toward the end of World War II.
He married Angeline Van't Hul in June 1949. She died in 1961 in Larchwood. He married Joyce Woudstra Vander Tuig in August 1963. They farmed at Boyden and Doon, Iowa. He retired in February 2001.
He was an active member of First Christian Reformed Church, where he served on the council, taught Sunday school and catechism classes, and started the Cadets. He was also a member of the Gideons, Kiwanis, American Legion and Lyon County Farm Bureau, where he held many offices. He served on the board of directors of the Christian school and many other organizations.
He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Alethea and Jim Oostenink of Hull, and Sandra and Larry Starkenburg of Hull; three sons, Dennis and his wife, Jackie Vande Griend of Doon, Bernard J. and his wife, Alesia Vande Griend of Sioux Falls, and Benjamin Vande Griend of Doon; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; two brothers, Irwin Vande Griend of Edgerton, Minn., and Edward Vande Griend of Sioux Falls; a sister, Joanne Jansma of Sioux Falls; and two nephews.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Ivan.
Memorials are being directed to the Gideons.

Arnold Buchholz
HARTLEY, Iowa - Arnold August Buchholz, 88, of Hartley died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Community Memorial Health Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley with the Rev. David Ericksen officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Warner Funeral Home in Hartley.
Mr. Buchholz was born Nov. 24, 1912, in Grant Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa, the son of William and Melinda (Hobermann) Buchholz. He grew up in Buena Vista County where he attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School, graduating from eighth grade in 1927. He married Viola Boettcher on July 21, 1935, in Storm Lake, Iowa. She died Aug. 31, 1999. They farmed near Storm Lake until 1962 when they moved to Le Mars, Iowa, where he was a salesman and area sales manager for Walnut Grove Feed Company. In 1967, they moved to Hartley.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he was active on the voter's assembly, the Men's Club, and was active in the Iowa District West for eight years. He was also active in assisting the pastor for two years in ministering the shut-ins. He was an honorary member of the Hartley Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Marlene and Delbert Mertens of Sioux City, Myrna and Kenneth Jones of Postville, Iowa, and Joyce and Raymond Santi of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Leslie and Karen Buchholz of Spencer, Iowa; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marie Grote and Mathilda Sump, both of Storm Lake.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Aaron Buchholz; and a grandson, Jonathan Santi.

Ralph Huisman Jr.
WESTSIDE, Iowa - Ralph Huisman Jr., 81, of Westside, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Church in Westside. Burial will be in Westside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at Huebner Funeral Home in Westside.

Alma Becker
MERRILL, Iowa - Alma Becker, 98, of Merrill died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at a Sioux City care center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Merrill First United Meth-odist Church with the Rev. Sue Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Floyd Valley (Melbourne) Cemetery, rural Merrill. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.
Miss Becker was born June 5, 1902, in Lincoln Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Christina (Schneider) Becker. She moved to Washington Township near Merrill as a young child. She attended rural school and graduated from Le Mars High School in 1924. She completed normal training at Iowa Teachers College and taught rural school for 17 years. She then worked for Woodbury County Electric and also for the Plymouth County superintendent of schools during the reorganization of rural schools in Plymouth County. She had been a resident of Sunrise Manor in Sioux City for the past three years.
She was a member of Merrill First United Methodist Church and had been a member of Merrill Melbourne United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her home and her flowers.
Survivors include a nephew and his wife, Gene and Grace Becker of Hinton; two nieces and their husbands, Janice and Harold Albert of Le Mars, and Rae and Jim Nanninga of Fort Dodge.
She preceded in death by her twin sister, Alice; a sister, Dorothea; a brother and his wife, Raymond J. and Marjorie Becker; and a nephew, David Becker.

June E. Bricker
LE MARS, Iowa - June Eleanor Bricker, 80, of Le Mars died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Plymouth Manor Care Center.
Services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Shinkle officiating. Visitation will be 3 p.m. until service time Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bricker was born June 19, 1920, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Hazel (Eldridge) Kelley. She graduated from East High in Waterloo and later received a teaching degree from Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught at the Greenfield, Reinbeck and Waterloo schools. She married Leon "Lee" Bricker on June 8, 1948, in Waterloo.
They lived in various locations before moving to Ackley, Iowa, in the 1950s. They owned and operated a jewelry store in Ackley before moving to Minneapolis. In 1970 they moved to Le Mars. She was the librarian at Kluckhohn Elementary from 1970 to 1980.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Le Mars and had been active in Circle. She had been a resident of Plymouth Manor Care Center for the past few months.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Scott of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Jane and Christopher Lindell of Marion, Iowa; six grandchildren, Benjamin "BJ" and Sarah Lindell, Adrienne, Taylor, Simone and Sydney Bricker.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald.

Nicholas Gotto Jr.
ANTHON, Iowa - Nicholas Gotto Jr., 76, of Anthon died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Oto. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Tuesday, with a vigil wake service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Nick Roach Jr.
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Nicholas Daniel Roach Jr., 74, of Rock Rapids died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his residence from complications with Alzheimer's disease.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. J. Charles Yetmar officiating. Bu-rial will be in Holy Name Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8:30 p.m. today, with family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary at Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.
Mr. Roach was born Aug. 5, 1926, in Rock Rapids, the son of Nicholas and Cornelia (McGraw) Roach. He attended country school and in 1944 graduated from Wilson High School in Rock Rapids. After graduation he worked for his parents on the family farm and also the Farmer's Cooperative Exchange in Rock Rapids. He was a member of the Rock Rapids Livestock 4-H Club, the Lyon County 4-H Livestock judging team and later a leader for the Rock Rapids Livestock 4-H Club.
He married Betty L. Rath on Nov. 14, 1950, in Holy Name Rectory in Rock Rapids. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from March 1951 to February 1953, stationed in Japan. After his honorable discharge, he farmed southwest of Rock Rapids from March 1954 to March 1960. In 1960 he started working at the post office in Rock Rapids as a janitor and part-time letter carrier. In 1965, he became postmaster, a position he held until retiring in September 1986.
He was a lifelong member of Holy Name Parish in Rock Rapids and an active member of the men's group. He helped with the Boy Scout Troop 190, was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6960, American Legion Post 103, NAPUS, a charter member of NARFE Chapter 2214 and Central Lyon Quarterback Club.
He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, football, pheasant hunting, fishing, bowling and planting trees.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sally and her husband, Dan Hartley of Salix, Iowa, and Teresa Roach of Yorba Linda, Calif.; three sons and their wives, Matthew and Deb Roach of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Joseph and Jennifer Roach of Edina, Minn., and Thomas and Teri Roach of Elkhorn, Neb.; nine grandchildren; a brother, Dr. J. Kenneth and his wife, Lou Roach of Sioux City; and two sisters, Mae Hartman of Ventura, Calif., and Mary Ellen Sinclair of Rock Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Ann Vogel.

Kenneth Bryan Sr.
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Kenneth Bryan Sr., 86, of Ida Grove died Friday, April 6, 2001.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Ida Grove Cemetery with military rites by American Legion McNamara-Moore Post 61. Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Candice 'Candy' Lynn Hansen
HOLSTEIN, Iowa - Candice "Candy" Lynn Hansen, 53, of Holstein died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home in Holstein. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Galva, Iowa. There is no visitation.
