Byron L. Danielson, 63, California
Byron Lloyd Danielson passed away with his family at his side July 15, 2002 at the Long Beach Veteran's Medical Center at Long Beach, CA. Byron was born to Grace and Omar Danielson on December 5, 1938, at South Gate, CA. Dan attended schools in Lynwood, CA, graduating from Lynwood High School in 1957. He attended Compton Junior College and joined the U.S. Army in 1962. He was stationed in Fort Ord, CA; Fort Lewis, WA; and in Alaska. Dan had an avid interest in flying and earned his pilot's license. He enjoyed auto racing and drove Midget race cars. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, scuba diving, and especially vacationing at the family cabin north of Pierce. He is survived by his parents, Grace and Omar Danielson of Orofino; son, Mitchell Danielson and his wife Robyn; son Michael Danielson; daughter Terryl Warner and husband Alan; sisters, Sandy Huling and husband Jim, DeeDee Huling and Elizabeth McConnell and husband Dave. Dan is also survived by his fiance, Sharon Koehler and his longtime friend Anita Swalley. His three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive him.
Claude Edward Jacobs, 79
Claude Edward Jacobs of Lewiston died July 22, 2002 at the Orchards Rehab & Care Center in Lewiston. Graveside service was held on Wednesday at Weseman Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Pine Hills Funeral Chapel.
Mary Towles, 93, retired Orofino teacher
Mary Ellen Towles, a retired Orofino teacher, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation Center in Orofino. She was born in Butte, Mont. April 23, 1909, to James and Elsie Cryderman Hawks. After graduating from Montana State University in 1933 she found a teaching job at the high school in the tiny town of Harrison, MT and taught algebra, geometry, English, Latin, chemistry and history. After six years she left and married Hollis Towles and they raised a family. In 1954 Mary procured a teaching job in the Orofino school district until her retirement in 1977. Her hobbies were gardening, genealogy and antiques. Survivors include her son, Douglas D. Towles of Orofino; her daughter, Lila J. Kleinkopf of Phoenix, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Julie Grimme of Austin, Texas, and Angela Bonner of Weippe; and great-grandchildren, Nathan, Rachel and Natalie Bonner. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 12, at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino.
Bee Gambs, 91, long-time resident
Flora Bee Gambs of Orofino died of natural causes June 5, 2002 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation. Bee was born to Burton and Anna Aldrich June 8, 1910 in Smithland, Iowa, where she grew up and graduated from high school. While in Iowa she played piano scores for silent movies and was a pianist for her brother-in-law's dance band. She and her husband, Hal B. Gambs, lived in Montana until 1945 when they settled in Orofino. Bee enjoyed playing bridge; crafts, gardening and being outside, as well as feeding hummingbirds and wild quail. Survivors include her son Roger of Atascadera, CA; sister Harriett of Memphis, TN; granddaughter Rachel of Nottingham, MD; grandson Rodger of San Luis Obispo, CA; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service and gathering of family and friends will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 28 at the Orofino-Peck United Methodist Church in Orofino. Cremation was under the direction of Pine Hills Funeral Chapel and burial will take place at the Smithland Cemetery at a later date. Cory W. Bloom, 35
Cory William Bloom, 35, passed away May 18, 2002 at his home in Vancouver, WA. He was born Feb. 28, 1967 in Orofino. Cory enjoyed many hobbies; golfing, bowling, motorcycles, camping, fishing, boxing, wrestling, and anything else he could find to do. He is survived by his father, Fred William Bloom of Pierce; his mother, Anita Harris of Medford, OR; his paternal grandmother, Glenna Skinner of Orofino; a sister, Jill Campbell of Placerville, CA; an uncle Delbert Bloom of Juliaetta; an aunt Glenna Mastrud of Orofino. Also surviving are the two loves of his life: his son Scottie Cory Bloom and his daughter, Sheane Bloom of Vancouver, WA. Cremation has taken place and burial was at Weseman Cemetery.
Erle H. Fackenthall
Erle H. Fackenthall, 83, Ahsahka, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 of cancer. He died at the home of his brother, Ira (Ike) Fackenthall, Ahsahka.
Clarence (Bud) Laws, 61, Alaska
Sterling, Alaska resident Clarence "Bud" E. Laws died June 5, 2002 at his home in Sterling after a long battle with cancer. Bud's final wishes were for his ashes to be scattered at a special place in Idaho, where a memorial service with family and friends will take place. Bud was born July 29, 1940 in Southwick to James W. and Blanche L. (Harris) Laws. He lived most of his life in Idaho and moved to Alaska in 1998 after his marriage to Lynett Richard (Olsen) on August 8, 1998. Bud worked in Prudhoe Bay for Peak Oilfield Services as an oiler, fueler and non-mobile equipment coordinator. He enjoyed playing country music, singing, and elk hunting. Bud is survived by his wife Lynett Laws of Sterling; sons, Thomas B. Laws of Boise and James W. Laws of Seattle, WA; stepmother Lucille Smith of Weippe; brothers Jim Laws of Mize, Miss. and Dick Laws of Orofino and half-brother Gary Ingram of Spokane, WA; half-sister Ardella Heimgardener; stepbrother Dave Ballo of Kennewick, WA; and grandchildren Brad and Brent Laws of Taft, CA and Kelby Laws of Boise. The family requests that instead of flowers, a donation should be made to Central Peninsula General Hospital Oncology Dept., 250 Hospital Place, Soldotna, AK 99669. Kenneth T. Williams, 43, a resident of Peck, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, ID. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Oregon. Vasser Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.
Leland (Lee) James Pritchard, 60
Memorial services will be held Saturday at the Clearwater Alliance Church at 11 a.m. for Leland (Lee) James Pritchard, who died June 21, 2002 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center of lymphoma cancer. Family and friends will gather at the church for a potluck dinner, following the service. Lee was born August 28, 1941 to Mary Erlene and Evan Donald Pritchard in Gig Harbor, WA. He graduated from Peninsula High School. Lee was a timber faller for 25 years and then became an independent carpenter. He married Arlene Wright March 16, 1990 at Seattle. They moved to Orofino ten years ago. Lee is survived by his wife Arlene; two sons, Troy Pritchard, Santa Barbara, CA,; Luke Pritchard, Sequim, WA; and three daughters, Jamie Pritchard, Sequim; Rhonda Stewart, Kelso, WA, and Mary Ann Pritchard, Clatskanie, Ore.; and numerous grandchildren. Brower Wann Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Cremation has taken place.
Albert E. Turner, 93
Albert E. Turner, 93, a retired U.S. Forest Service worker and resident of Clearwater County for 30 years, died Monday, June 17, 2002 at Tri-State Memorial Hospital at Clarkston. Survivors include his wife, Eldora, of Lenore. Arrangements were under the direction of Mountain View Funeral Home.
Della L. Carpenter, 88, Orofino
Della L. Carpenter died Feb. 27, 2003 at her Orofino home. Della was born April 30, 1914 at Forest, ID to Andrew J. and Mary F. Lessor Fay. She grew up in the Dent and Lenore areas, attending schools in Lenore, graduating from the eighth grade. She later earned her GED in approximately 1970. She married Henry L. Carpenter, March 7, 1935 at Asotin, Wash. They farmed at Lenore until 1947, when they moved to Orofino, farming on Upper Fords Creek. They moved into town in 1989. Della worked as a housekeeper at State Hospital North from 1961 to 1976. She attended the Church of God. She loved to cook and bake for her family, always keeping a supply of cookies on hand for neighborhood children. She always had a garden and raised vegetables and flowers. Survivors include a son, Henry J. and Norma Carpenter of Orofino; a daughter, Mary A. Keller and husband Tom, Orofino; a grandson Daniel T. Keller, serving with the military in Germany; step-grandson Mike Wilks of Orofino and step-granddaughter Melanie Finch, Pullman, Wash.; four step-great grandchildren; a sister Letha Lacy of Meridian and a brother, Alvin Fay of Orofino. Funeral services were held Monday, March 3 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel. Thomas Lloyd Johnson, 60, Weippe
Thomas (Tom) Lloyd Johnson, Weippe logger, died May 8, 2003 in Orofino. Tom was born Feb. 17, 1944 in Orofino to Hjalmer and Myrtle Wilson Johnson. He received his education from the schools in Weippe. He married Bea Harper June 8, 1960 in Asotin. They were just one month short of their 43rd anniversary at the time of his death. They spent the majority of their married life a few miles from Weippe, on Johnson Rd. The couple raised four daughters, all of whom graduated from Timberline High School. Tom began his work career in his teens at the family mill owned by his father. At 14, he began driving a logging truck. He worked as an independent driver in the upper Clearwater area. One of his most loved hobbies was restoring vintage cars. He began this hobby with his father and together they restored a 1930 Dodge Limousine (with suicide doors). He also restored the 1936 Ford Pickup he used to take his family camping at Rocky Ridge Lake. Among other vehicles, he was proud of his 1955 Mercury. Survivors include his wife, Bea Johnson of Weippe; four daughters, Darlene and Daren McCann of Lewiston, Shannon and Roy Hill of Nezperce, Stephanie and Jim Wooderchak of Byers, Tex. and Jami Johnson of Lewiston; six grandchildren, Jeff, Jason and Scott Carlson all of Lewiston, Clay Hill of Nezperce and Allie and Dustin Wooderchak of Byers, Tex.; one sister, Betty Cole of Weippe and four brothers, Clayton Johnson and P.L. Johnson of Weippe, Steve Johnson of Lewiston and Gene Johnson of Grangeville. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Wesleyan Church in Weippe. Arrangements were under the direction of Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino.
Phyllis Lorraine Eller, 84, Orofino
Phyllis Lorraine Eller, Orofino homemaker, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2003 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Phyllis was born Dec. 26, 1918 at Grangemont to Gus and Grace Bashaw. They were long-time Grangemont homesteaders. She was an accomplished quilt maker and enjoyed tole painting, decorating her home and planting her flowers. She enjoyed going to church and participating in her Bible study group as well as helping friends and family. Survivors include her children, Janice Hurlburt Nutting, Billings, Mont., Roger Hurlburt, Stephens City, Vir., Dennis Hurlburt, Green Acres, Wash. and Nadine Hurlburt Smith, Edgewood, Wash.; a step-daughter Sherlee Eller Hawkins of Kamiah; two brothers, Elton Bashaw and Lowell (Dick) Bashaw of Orofino; 12 grand-children and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 15 at 11 a.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. A graveside service will be held afterward at Weseman Cemetery. A potluck dinner for family and friends will follow at the Clearwater Alliance Church, 14233 Hwy. 12, Orofino. Memorials may be made in her name to Clearwater Alliance Church.
Donald L. Fine, 87, valley resident
Donald L. Fine, longtime Kamiah resident, passed away Monday, May 5, 2003 at the Grangeville Health and Rehab Center. Don was born Aug. 28, 1915 in Peck to Harry and Ozellia Bloodsworth Fine. He grew up in the Peck area and has always lived in the Clearwater Valley. He was a truck driver and a logger and can be seen in photographs in the National Geographic Magazine featuring log drives from this area. He was also on the final log drive on the North fork and Clearwater Rivers to Lewiston. He loved to hunt and fish and in his later years he enjoyed flowers, gardening and canning Don married Edna Knutson Feb. 14, 1941. The couple had four children. They later divorced. On Dec. 24, 1969 Don married Edith Grove. After her death in 1997, Don's health declined. Survivors include daughters Darlene Fine Cannon of Grangeville, Mary Ellen Sater of Lewiston and Donna Wilson of Joseph, Ore; his brother Deryle "Dude" Fine of Orofino; sister Tillie Smith of Lewiston, nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two on the way. A graveside service followed by burial of Don's remains will be held at the Kamiah Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Trenary Funeral Home.
Anna Lou Blevins, 72, Lewiston
Anna Lou Blevins of Lewiston died May 6, 2003 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center of cancer. Anna was born Nov. 20, 1930 to Floyd Robert and Martha Manda Stenzel Blevins at Orofino. The family lived at Greer. She graduated from Orofino High School in 1949. She worked for the Idaho First National Bank in Orofino, Whitney's Nursing Home in Greer and Curl's Greer Tavern and Cafe. Anna moved to Lewiston in 1975, where she lived with her cousin, Marie Sisson for two years before moving into the Thompson Apartments, where she has lived for the last 25 years. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Mike Middleton of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a twin sister, Ina Nunes of Elko, Nev. A memorial Mass was celebrated Friday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lewiston. Inurnment followed at Normal Hill Cemetery in Lewiston. Arrangements were under the direction of Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston.
Merlie Edward Morrow, 92
Merlie Edward Morrow died May 6, 2003 in Priest River of complications of a stroke. Merlie was born Oct. 20, 1920. He, his daughters, nieces and nephews were frequent participants in the sawing events at the Clearwater County Lumberjack Days. Services were held Saturday at the Sherman Chapel in Priest River. John E. Schultz, 87, Orofino
John Edward Schultz passed away Sunday afternoon, May 18, 2003 in the presence of all his loved ones at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. John was born Jan. 5, 1916 in Albany, WI to Harry and Suzanne Schultz. The family moved to Idaho when John was 15, where he attended high school in Twin Falls. After graduation, he was employed by Morrison-Knudsen for a project that took him to Wake Island in the Pacific. While on the island, he was taken as a POW when Japan captured the island in December, 1942. He was held for four years until being freed at the end of WWII. John was an active member of the "Survivors or Wake", an organization formed some years later. John lived in Orofino for 38 years with his wife of 53 years, Faye Schultz. Previous to moving to Orofino, Faye and John lived in McCall for 15 years and raised four children; Sharon Jones and Marsha Haag, both of Omaha, NE; Bill Schultz of Denver, CO and Kay Neumeyer of Orofino. His greatest joy in life was the game of golf. John worked for C-PTPA for almost 20 years. After retirement Faye and John spent their winters in Parker Dam, AZ, their second home. John is survived by three sons from a previous marriage; John, Ted and Mike; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and as per family wishes, there will be no public service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to charities of choice.
Donald C. Tyrrel, 83, Orofino
Donald C. Tyrrel, retired master mechanic, died May 18, 2003 in Orofino. Don was born October 26, 1919 in Santa Ana, Calf. He completed school through the eleventh grade. In the mid 20's, the family moved to San Diego, Calif., where he remained until retiring in 1982. He worked at Convair in San Diego during the war. There he met Edna Summers, who was born in Genesee and grew up in Orofino. They were married in 1946 and were married for 51 years. Edna died in 1997. Don had a previous marriage and had a son Ronald and stepdaughter Joyce. Don went to Alaska in 1956, where he worked for various construction companies as a master mechanic, repairing heavy duty equipment. He traveled back and forth between California and Alaska for several years. He worked many years on the pipeline. After retirement in 1982, the couple moved to Orofino and he and Edna traveled extensively in their R.V., visiting all 48 states and traveling coast to coast on the Trans Canada Highway. Don enjoyed camping, fishing and boating with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Edna; sister Eunice and brother Frank. He is survived by his son Ronald Tyrrel of San Diego and stepdaughter Joyce McMahan of Orofino; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Burial took place Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at the Orofino Riverside Cemetery.
James M. Knight, 74, Kamiah
James Monroe Knight of Kamiah died Saturday, May 10, 2003 in Lewiston. James was born to Agnes Smith and Frank Knight at Witchita, Kan. Nov. 25, 1928. He married Ruby Self June 22, 1948. They were divorced in 1966. He later married Lena Faucett. He worked in construction and farming industries. Around 1970 he began working with some of the farmers on the Camas prairie. He also worked in Big Piney, Wyo on a large cattle ranch. James came back to Idaho and continued working with the area farmers. Surviving him are two daughters, Judy Morris of Lewiston and Marlous Borst of Carson City, Nev.; a sister, Mabel Shaumbert of Gardener, Iowa; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and various loved ones with an extended family.
Frances L. Norris, 66, former resident
Frances Lillian Schultz Norris of Idaho Falls, a former Orofino resident, died May 13, 2002 of natural causes at her home. Fran was born March 12, 1936 in Washington, Iowa to George Henry and Anna Lillian Boden Shultz. Among the various jobs she held throughout her life were at a bank, as a manager of a Bob's Big Boy Restaurant and as a secretary for Idaho Senator Steve Symms. Fran is survived by three sons, Don and Crystal Norris of Big Piney, Wyo., David and Janina Ficek Norris and Darrell and Beverly Norris of Evanston, Wyo.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; her mother, Anna Lillian Schultz of Sierra Madre, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Alice and Buddy Brennan of Sierra Madre, Calif.; two brothers, Marvin Ray and Marti Schultz of Arcadia, Calif. and Dwight George and Janice Schultz of Grand Junction, Colo. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 18, 2002 at Crandall Funeral Home in Evanston, Wyo. Burial will be in the Evanston Cemetery. Local arrangements were under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary in Idaho Falls.
