Scot J. Ost, 39, Orofino
Scot J. Ost passed away Jan. 15, 2003. Scot was born Oct. 28, 1963 in Spokane, Wash. to Jerrie and Patricia Ost. He moved to Orofino in 1965 and graduated from Orofino High School in 1983. He then moved to Spokane, where he worked in construction. He was a member of the Laborer's International Union of North America since 1990. Scot enjoyed hunting, fishing, motorcycle riding and the outdoors. He is survived by his parents, Jerrie O. and Patricia A. Ost of Orofino; one brother, Tony Lee Ost of Nampa; one sister, Leann L. and husband Dwaine Hubbard of Lewiston; grandmother Lola Ost of Orofino; three aunts, Gaye and husband Ron Rauenzahn of Davenport, Wash., Joy and husband Jerry Douthitt of North Little Rock, Ark. and Lexie and husband Steve Bradley of Escondido, Calif.; and numerous nieces and cousins. At the request of family, no services will be held. Scot will be buried at Riverside Cemetery.

Ralph (Lee) Hudson, 71, Potlatch
Ralph (Lee) Hudson of Potlatch, formerly of Orofino, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow. A memorial service was held Monday at Teewepuu Center one mile east of Orofino on U.S. Highway 12.

Richard A. Mulvaney, 57
Richard A. Mulvaney, a 20 year resident of Orofino and formerly of Entiat, Wash., died Jan. 14, 2003 or Lewiston, following a brief illness. Richard was born Feb. 3, 1945 at Wenatchee, the son of Carl and Helen (Lyon) Mulvaney. He attended schools at Entiat and graduated from Entiat High School in 1963. Richard later attended baking school and was active in the food industry the rest of his life. He had a passion for dancing and eating his own bakery products. For the past 20 years, he resided at Orofino, where he was employed until poor health forced his retirement. Survivors include a brother Don and wife Marlene of East Wenatchee, Wash.; cousin Joyce Lipppincott of Chelan, Wash.; an aunt and uncle, Floyd and Dutch Kirby of Chelan; his close friends in Orofino, Mildred and Lee; numerous cousins in Illinois and his beloved Maltese dog, "Noodles". A tribute service was held Tuesday, Jan. 21 under the direction of Betts Chapel, with Donn Plew officiating. Interment was at Entiat Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Orofino Sunday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. at the Orofino Tabernacle, 1839 Michigan Ave. Memorials may be sent to the Clearwater Humane Society, P.O. Mary Jean Ross Hanson, 62
Mary Jean Ross Hanson, 62, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 in Kennewick, after a long illness. She moved to Kennewick eight months ago after living in Clarkston for 44 years. Mary Jean was born Jan. 8, 1941, in Orofino, to Charles and Minnie Bena. She was born on her grandparents homestead on the North Fork of the Clearwater River at Beaver Dam, which is now underneath Dworshak Dam. She was later adopted by her aunt, Clara M. Ross, who raised her. She attended school in Orofino, where she also attended the First Church of God. Mary played the accordion, organ and piano, and sang in a music trio at church, school and revival meetings. At the age of 12, she won a beauty contest for the states of Idaho, Washington and Oregon. She married in 1958, later moving to the Lewiston-Clarkston area to divorce. She remarried three times, with each marriage ending in divorce. Mary Jean enjoyed boating, and those who knew her called her the River Rat. In the summers, she was seen taking family and friends up the Snake River in her boat. Survivors include her daughters, Starla and Debra; son-in-law Bill; son Terry; grand-daughter Marsha; grandson Jacob; great-granddaughters Megan and McKinzie and numer-ous nieces and nephews. A private gathering for Mary Jean will be held by the family. Those who would like to attend may call Gloria at 1-509-758-7665.

Ray Alfred Hodson, 89
Ray Alfred Hodson, born Aug. 2, 1913 in Woodland, passed away Jan. 18, 2003 in Lewiston. In 1932, during the depression, Ray joined the Navy. After serving four years, he enrolled in the Coyne Electrical School in Asheville, NC. During WWII he served as an Ensign in the Maritime Service. In 1946 he returned to work with the telephone company, where he transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah and then to Boise. Ray ended his 40-year career with the telephone industry when he retired in 1976. Of the 40 years, he never missed one day of work. Ray's avid love for camping and hunting along with his expertise in guns and gun loading led him to open a gun shop after his retirement. He also spent his time traveling all over Idaho and Alaska hunting big game. In 1997, Lacey, Ray's wife of 60 years, passed away, causing Ray to move to Oldtown to be closer to family. There, after studying the Bible, he became a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include his brogher Keith Hodson of Advance, NC and two sisters, June Schoeffler of Weippe and Faye Self of Oldtown. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 at Trenary Funeral Home in Kooskia.

Jennie McHone, 95
Jennie McHone passed away Jan. 14, 2003 at Royal Vista Care Center in Ellensburg, Wash. Jennie was born Feb. 8, 1907 on Tahoe Ridge near Kooskia, to Jackson and Maude (Tweedy) Bowles. She married Glenn McHone Nov. 1, 1929. She spent most of her life on Tahoe as a farm wife and mother. When she and her husband Glenn retired, they moved to Kooskia. She moved to Clarkston, Wash. in 1989 and to Ellensburg in 1994. Survivors include two daughters, June Estes of Clarkston and Mary (Beryl) Kornoely of Ellensburg; two sisters; two brothers, four granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren and three great, great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Trenary Funeral Chapel in Kooskia.

Clay Edward Hill, 15, Nezperce
Clay Edward Hill died Monday, June 30, 2003 as a result of a tragic car accident near Gifford. He was born in Lewiston July 4, 1987 and is survived by his parents Roy and Shannon Hill at the family home in Nezperce. Clay attended Nezperce schools beginning in Kindergarten through his sophomore year of high school He is r-membered for his kind, friendly personality. He was a very cheerful person who worked very hard to maintain high grades. One of his proudest accomplishments was raising a Grand Champion steer as part of his FFA career. He loved to spend his free time outside. He was an avid skier and fisherman. He rode his motorcycle every time the opportunity arose. He pitched in to help maintain the track at Mohlerso that he and his fellow classmates would have the privilege of riding there. His parents were his greatest heroes and role models. One activity that they shared with many family friends was trap shooting. Clay recently won the Junior 16-yd Shoot at the Nezperce Gun Club and he was also the Sub-Junior 16-yd Champion at the 2003 Father's Day Shoot. In addition to his parents he is survived by a sister, Jami Johnson; grandmothers Bea Johnson and Genevieve Hill; uncles Daren McCann, Jim Wooderchak, and Wayne Hill; aunts Stephanie Wooderchak, Shirley Hill and Dianna Hill; and their families who all love Clay and miss him very much. A scholarship fund will be established at the Nezperce Branch of the US Bank, P.O. Box 368, Nezperce, Idaho 83543. Contributions will be accepted in the name of Clay Hill Memorial Scholarship. Contributions may also be left at any local US Bank. Funeral services were held Monday at Nezperce High School Gym. Burial followed at Nezperce Community Cemetery. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Leroy Kannada, 79
Leroy Kannada of White Bird died Monday, July 7 at St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood. Leroy was born Jan. 4, 1924 at Little Rock, Ark. He started school in Arkansas and then the family moved to Wenatchee, Wash., where he graduated from high school. After high school he served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII as a pilot flying B-24 bombers. Following his discharge he moved to Idaho, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator and logger in the Weippe, Pierce and White Bird areas. He married Bonnie Brumley Oct. 9, 1992. He retired in 1999. Leroy enjoyed fishing, hunting and doing mechanics. Survivors include his wife Bonnie at the family home; daughters Debbie Haskins of Cascade, Lillian Scott of Caldwell, Toni Campbell of Clear Lake, Calif. and Patty Hosman of Des Moines, IA; stepsons John Brumley of Coeur d'Alene, Nathan Brumley of Meridian and Bonner Brumley of White Bird; 11 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; a brother William Tidmore of Oklahoma and three sisters, Lillian Hatcher of Okla., Cortez Pike and Lavada McCarthy, both of Wash. A graveside inurnment service will be held Friday, July 11 at the White Bird Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Blackmer Funeral Home of Grangeville.

Raynelle Jeannette Goodwin George, 54
Raynelle Jeannette Goodwin George, passed away June 27, 2003 with her family at her bedside in Eureka, Calif. Raynelle was born May 12, 1949 to Robert M. and Evelyn Goodwin in Eureka. She graduated from Eureka Senior High School in 1967 and moved to Ukiah, Calif. to work at Mendocino State Hospital, where she met and married Michael D. Mitchell and had her only son. She moved to Napa, Calif., where she received her degree in nursing at Napa Valley College, going on to be Assistant Director of Nurses at Napa State Hospital. She later re-married, to Donald J. George and moved to Orofino after retiring, where she built her home and lived for seven years. Raynelle then moved to Lewiston, where she pursued an interest in photography, and photographed every county seat in the state, intermingled with photographs of the entire Lewis and Clark Trail from the entry into Idaho as well as to its conclusion at Fort Clatsop. She donated copies of these to schools. She then welcomed her granddaughter into this world. Her next pursuit in 2002, was to run for the governorship of the State of Idaho, but was unable to unseat the incumbent Dirk Kempthorne. Raynelle enjoyed traveling, including the Bahamas, Brazil and Zimbabwe, Africa; fishing; swimming; charity work such as becoming a candy striper when she was younger, and especially spending time with her family. Survivors include her son, Michael D. Mitchell; granddaughter Alyssa L. Mitchell of Clarkston, Wash.; her parents Robert M. and Evelyn V. Goodwin; brothers David M. Goodwin, Robert D. Goodwin, all of Orofino; and sister Sharon V. Stewart of Fairfield, Calif.; nephews and many aunts and uncles. Arrangements were under the direction of Chapel of the Ferns-Cooper Mortuary, Eureka, Calif.

Donald L. Fine, 87, Kamiah resident
A memorial service for Donald L. Fine will be held Saturday, Aug. 2 at 1 p.m. at the Kamiah Cemetery in Kamiah. Don passed away Monday, May 5, 2003 in Grangeville at Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was a long-time resident of Kamiah. Don was born Aug. 28, 1915 in Peck to Harry and Ozellia Bloodsworth Fine. He grew up in the Peck area and was a truck driver and logger. He can be seen in National Geographic Magazine photographs in a feature about the log drives from this area. Don was also on the final log drive on the North Fork and Clearwater Rivers to Lewiston. Don loved to hunt and fish and in his later years enjoyed flowers, gardening and canning. He married Edna Knutson Feb. 15, 1941 and they later divorced. Don and Edna had four children. On Dec. 24, 1969 Don married Edith Grove. After her death in 1997 his health declined. Don is survived by his daughters Darlene Fine Cannon of Grangeville, Mary Ellen Sater of Lewiston and Donna Wilson of Joseph, Ore., a brother Deryle "Dude" Fine of Orofino; a sister Tillie Smith of Lewiston; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trenary Funeral Home.

Peggy Eileen Craig, 54, Lenore
Peggy Eileen Craig of Lenore died after a sudden heart attack Friday, May 23, 2003. Peggy was born May 20, 1949 at Camp Campbell, KY to Troy and Gloria Edmonds. She lived briefly in the East before moving out West, growing up in California with her sister Shirley. She married Jim Craig Aug. 13, 1966 in Carson City, Nev. They had two daughters while living in Bishop, Calif. After a brief stay in Bakersfield, Calif., they moved to Lewiston in 1979. The couple would have celebrated 37 years of marriage this summer. Peggy had been employed at Lewis-Clark State College. She and husband Jim had planned to retire within the next five years. In looking ahead to this event, they had built their dream home in Lenore in 2000. She is survived by her husband, Jim, at their home in Lenore; daughter Jennifer and Jim Wilcoxon and children Brian, Troy, Michelle and Erica of Lewiston; daughter Rebecca (Becky) and Tim Johnson and children Craig and Emily of Hayden; mother-in-law Dorothy Craig of Lewiston; sister Shirley McKellar of Reno, Nev. and her children, Troy Dews of Reno and Shelly Kendall of Apple Valley, Calif. A memorial service was held Saturday in Lewiston.

Phroda B. Court, 88, former resident
Phroda B. Court died May 31, 2003 at her home in Gresham, Ore. Phroda was born April 10, 1915 at Shepherd, Mont. She moved to Greer when she was about six years old. She then moved to Oregon in 1951. Phroda was baptized in 1957 at the Beaverton Christian church. She enjoyed gardening, making quilts, crocheting and loved to fish. Survivors include two sons, Hollis Court and Larry Court of Tigard, Ore.; a daughter Sheila Warnack of Beaverton, Ore., sister Norma Choate of Kamiah and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services were held June 4 at Young's Funeral Home in Tigard, Ore. Burial was at Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard.

Bonnie Webster, 67
Bonnie Webster, Weippe, died Monday, June 2 in a car accident in Boise. Arrangements are pending.

Andrew Datlow, 43
Andrew Stuart Datlow of Pierce died at his home in Pierce. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Emma Williams, 87
Emma (Shine) Williams passed away June 2, 2003 at the Royal Plaza Care Center in Lewiston. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7 at Mountain View Funeral Chapel, 7th and Cedar Street, in Lewiston.

Clement T. Secaur, 87, former resident
Clement T. Secaur passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at Kennewick General Hospital in Kennewick, WA, surrounded by his family. He was born in Coeur d'Alene, ID on March 15, 1916 to Warren and Mary Secaur. Clem grew up in Coeur d'Alene. After graduating from high school he joined the army and tried for the 1936 Olympics in Track and Field. He married Alice J. Morrell on January 1, 1937. After losing his arm in a sawmill accident, Clem and Alice moved their family to Orofino, where he began his accounting practice. They retired to Royal Columbian Retirement Inn in Kennewick, WA after living in Orofino for 52 years. Clem was an avid hunter and hiker and loved spending time with his family. Clem is survived by his wife, Alice, Kennewick, WA; one son, Guy Secaur and wife, Sharon, Bermuda Dunes, CA; two daughters, Pamela Roby and husband Larry, Orofino and Kim Flowers and husband, Ken, Tri-Cities, WA; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; a brother, William Secaur, Post Falls, and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services preceded burial at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens on March 22, 2003.

Jeanie L. Heideman, 50, Weippe
Jeanie L. Heideman of Weippe died Tuesday, March 18, 2003. Jeanie was born Dec. 21, 1952 at Spokane, WA. She volunteered time as a Blue Bird leader, 4-H leader and Special Olympics coach, and loved working in her yard. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Rick Heideman of Weippe; a son, Mike Heideman and wife Julie and their children Brittney and Ryan of Nezperce; daughter Tina Marsan and husband Gil and children Brandon and Austin of Smelterville; brothers and sisters from the Yakima-Selah, WA area Linda and Doug Harrison, Don Dees, James and JoAnn Dees and Kellie and Tom Groth; stepfather Howard Fuller of Orofino and stepmother Eve Dees of Fort Walton Beach, FL. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service was held Monday at the Forest Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene. She was laid to rest near her mother, Geraldine Fuller. Cards may be sent to Rick Heideman in care of Gil and Tina Marsan at 623 Lower Page Road, Smelterville, ID 83868. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Idaho Special Olympics, 8426 Fairview Ave., Boise, ID 83704.

Darrell Winton Dawson, 78, Orofino
Darrell "Doc" Winton Dawson, a retired truck driver, died March 18, 2003 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation in Orofino. Darrell was born Jan. 22, 1925 to Laura and William W. Dawson in Agatha. He lived in Orofino on Canada Hill and graduated from Orofino High School. At the age of 16 he moved to Oregon and then to Salt Lake City, UT six years later. He worked as a long-haul truck driver for ten years. While living in Salt Lake City he married and had two sons, and the marriage later ended in divorce. Unable to drive a truck due to eye trouble, he moved to Nevada and tended a bar and cafe for a friend for 18 years. He was a member of Klampers in Nevada. He had a stroke in Nevada and a his brother brought him back to Orofino to be closer to family. He has resided at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation for the past 10 years. Doc is survived by two grandsons, Chris and Sam Dawson; two great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Brigitte Dawson, all of Salt Lake City; and sister-in-law Deanne Dawson of Orofino. No service is planned and the family requests that donations be sent to the Orofino Community Credit Union scholarship fund, P.O. Box 1173, Orofino, ID 83544. Arrangements were under the direction of Pine Hills Funeral Chapel.

Robert (Dusty) Wilcox Rhodes, 89, Orofino
Robert (Dusty) Wilcox Rhodes died at his Orofino home, Nov. 6, 2003 of complications of cancer. He was 89. Robert was born Dec. 24, 1913 at Bratenahl, Cleveland, Ohio to William C. and Mary Wilcox Rhodes. He received 12 years of education. He came to southern Idaho in the 1930's, where he owned and operated an apple orchard. He then moved to Klamath Falls, Ore., where he worked for Weyerhauser Lumber and Logging. It was during this time that he met Frances Green. Dusty and Frances were married Jan. 2, 1943 in Reno, Nev. He served in the 650th Engineer Topographic Battalion Company "A" and was honorable discharged in 1943. From 1944 to 1950 he worked various positions surveying, fishing and road construction in Oregon and Alaska. In 1950 he built the family home while working for local sawmills. A move in 1953 brought him to Orofino where he built houses and did government contract work. It was at this time he established Rhodes Realty. After selling Rhodes Realty, Dusty worked for Brooks Concrete, Corp. of Engineers and other contractors until his retirement in 1983. His favorite pastime was being outdoors enjoying and observing nature. Dusty loved his family dearly and will be sorely missed by many. Preceding him in death were three children, sons Mitchell Ray Rhodes and Robert William Rhodes and daughter, Diana Lee Haas and a brother, William Rhodes. Survivors include his wife Frances Rhodes at their Orofino home; a son, John Rhodes of Moscow; a sister, Dorothy Holmes of Fort Belvoir, VA. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel. The family suggest memorials be made to the Rhodes Family Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo Bank, P.O. Box 2199, Orofino, ID 83544 or Ducks Unlimited. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Vivian Christian Sawyer, 85, Orofino
Vivian Christine Sawyer died Nov. 9, 2003 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation in Orofino. She was 85. Vivian was born Nov. 23, 1917 to Oscar Eklund and Ida Matilda (Aspegren) Eklund at Hildreth, Neb. She graduated from Hildreth High School in 1935 and Kearney State College in 1937. She graduated from Walla Walla Community College in 1969 as a Licensed Practical Nurse. During World War II, Vivian worked as a secretary at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. From 1938 to 1941 she taught school in a one-room school-house in Nebraska. She married Quincey Kieth Sawyer March 9, 1944. After receiving her LPN, she worked as a nurse at the Oregon State Hospital from 1969 until retiring and moving to Orofino in 1979. Vivian was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid reader and had a constant thirst for truth and learning. She enjoyed her family and will be remembered as a sweet, caring person, always willing to extend a helping hand to others. Preceding her in death were her husband, Quincey Kieth Sawyer; a daughter, Mary Patricia Burns; a son, Daniel Kieth Sawyer and a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Irene Lee. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Ronald Thompson of Seattle, Wash., Bonnie and Dwight Bowman of Enterprise, Ore., and Coral and Jay Lee of Orofino; a son-in-law Paige Burns of Orofino; five grandsons, Bruce and wife Amanda Lee of Rathdrum, Mark Lee, Robert Burns and Jonney Bowman, all of Orofino and Joey Bowman of Colorado; granddaughters Christina and Dan Odewia of Montclair, NJ and Sarah and Craig Kellog of Pendleton, OR; great-granddaughters Meghan Miller and Brook Lee of Orofino and great-grandson, Michael Lee, Orofino. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Pine Hills Funeral Chapel.

Mary V. Ingram, 93, Clarkston
Mary V. Ingram died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003 at Clarkston Care Center. She was 93. Mary was born April 5, 1910 in Parker, Kan. to William and Hettie Baker Miner. She grew up in Kansas. She married Joe Ingram June 10, 1936 in Kansas City, Kan., and was a homemaker. The couple moved to Idaho in 1957 after Joe's retirement. Mary worked for State Hospital North in Orofino and later as head housekeeper at Clearwater Valley Hospital. After her retirement they moved to Lewiston. Joe passed away in January 1993 and Mary moved to Evergreen Estates in Clarkston in 1997. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, June L. Johnson and three brothers. Survivors include sons Jerry Ingram of Lewiston and Jim Johnson of Grangeville; a sister, Ineta Cobler of San Diego, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Sherri Norton of Boise, Bonnie Gorton of Wendover, Nev., John Johnson of Burbank, Calif., Linda Kaschmitter of Cottonwood, Kim Johnson of Grangeville, Robin Haskin of Lewiston, Wendy Welch of Kooskia, Jason Ingram of Everett, Wash., Aaron Ingram of Kennewick and Sheila Ingram of Lewiston; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mary was buried next to her husband at Normal Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston.
