Funeral services for Vera M. Barrett (nee Zinkel), 92, were held Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mt. Prospect. Interment was in Ridgewood cemetery. She was born March 10, 1917, in Mt. Prospect and died Aug. 23. She was employed at Lutheran General Hospital for 25 years. Mrs. Barrett was the wife of the late J. Harold Barrett; mother of the late Lyle Barrett; sister of the late Alma Krueger. Arrangements were made by Friedrichs Funeral Home, Mt. Prospect.

Robert E. Beck of Arlington Hts., 95, died on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009 at Northwest Community Health Care. A Memorial service was held on Friday, Aug. 14, at St. David's Episcopal Church, Glenview. Interment followed in Memory Gardens cemetery. He was born Apr. 18, 1914, in Penn Township, Pa. He was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 and topped off the Sears Tower. He was the husband of Adele Beck and the late Madalyn Beck; father of Marlene (Rodney) Bear; stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.

Carol L. Bonk, 65, of Wheeling, died on Aug. 23, 2009 at Glenbrook Hospital. She was born on Dec. 12, 1943. She was the wife of Dennis Bonk; mother of Sherry Farning; grandmother of Richard, Andrew, Edward, Ember, Autumn and Sierra. She was preceded in death by her parents Lelland Chumbley and Eileen Knlep. Services were private.

Funeral services for Robert E. Boyer, of Prospect Hts., 86, were Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at Matz Funeral Home in Mt. Prospect. He was born March 25, 1923, in Chicago. Mr. Boyer was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He flew with the Flying Tigers. He was the husband of the late Jeanette Charlotte Boyer; father of Judith Ellen Boyer, Donna Jean (Robert) Hansen and Kevin Robert Boyer; grandfather of Robert (Lisa) Hansen and Sean Hansen and great-grandfather of Ella Hansen and uncle to many.

Margaret C. Brandel was born May 26, 1923, in Chicago, and died Aug. 9, 2009 in Downers Grove. She was a long-time caregiver for her husband, John. She is survived by her sister, Geraldine Roche; nephews William (Susan) and Michael Roche, her nieces, Christine Roche and Claudia (Carl) Segneri, and her great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband. Prayers were said Friday, Aug. 14, at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd. and Mass was held at St. James Church in Arlington Hts.

A funeral service for John L. Calvert, 70. formerly of Wheeling, was held Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home in Schaumburg. Entombment was in Memory Gardens cemetery. He was born Apr. 19, 1939, in Pana, Ill., and died on Monday, Aug. 17, in Algonquin. He was the owner of several companies. He was the husband of Rosella and the late Edwina; father of Valerie (Steve) Terry, Michael (Kathy) Calvert, Kevin (Brigette) Calvert, Tammy Carroll and H.B. (Susie) Calvert; and he was a stepfather, grandfather and brother.

Jane M. Creagh (nee Michaels), 89, of Rolling Meadows, died Aug. 14, 2009 in her home. She was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Chicago, and was the wife of Raymond Creagh for 59 years. She was the mother of Carol (Bill Sr.) Krogstie, Nancy (Douglas Sr.) Bober, Pat (Chuck) Hawley, Mary Lou (Larry Sr.) Hoffman and David (Wendy) Creagh; grandmother of 13 and great grandmother of five. Funeral services took place Tuesday, Aug. 18, from Meadows Funeral Home in Rolling Meadows to St. Colette Church.

Diane V. Dorizas (nee Constance), 63, of Rolling Meadows, died Aug. 24, 2009 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Hts. She was born Aug. 29, 1945, in Stevens Point, WI. She was the mother of Spiro Dorizas, Andreas (Kristi) Dorizas and Valeria (Tiago) Velho; grandmother of John Dorizas and sister of George (Linda) Constance. Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 28, at 10:30 a.m. at Meadows Funeral Home, Rolling Meadows. Interment at St. Michael the Archangel cemetery, Palatine.
Lora Battles Eckert

Born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Wilton and Maude Battles, Lora was able to attend college during the Depression because of a scholarship for her violin playing. She graduated summa cum laude from Ouachita College and later she earned her Master's in Education from the National College of Education in Evanston. She started teaching school in Hot Springs and moved to Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1946. She taught third grade here for over 30 years, first at West and then at Forest School.
She married
Ray Eckert, who was a maintenance engineer for District 62, in 1953. They had 36 years of happy marriage. They were both active as members of the First Methodist Church and also of the Lattof YMCA. Once retired, they commuted between their home on Park Place and their lakefront cottage in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Following her husband's death in 1989, Lora shared many hours of making music with her beloved brother, Wilton Battles. Upon his death in 1998, she moved to Bellingham, WA, to be close to her daughter, Lora M. Eckert.
Lora loved beauty and had an artist's eye for noticing the world the world around her. Looking at flowers, birds, trees, and lovely things brought her much joy. She was able to find happiness within herself as well as bring it to others. To know her was to love her.
She is survived by her daughter, Lora M. Eckert (Tovah Rainsong) of Bellingham, and her nephews Wil (Carolyn) Battles, III of Des Plaines, and Richard (Carol) Battles of Charleston, SC.
A local memorial service for Lora will be held on Saturday, September 5, at 10 AM at the First United Methodist Church, 668 Graceland, in Des Plaines.

Helen B. Fillpek, 84, of Niles, died on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at Lutheran General Hospital. She was born on July 11, 1925 in Thorp, Wisc., and was a homemaker. Funeral services were held at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home on Saturday, Aug. 22 and at St. John Brebeuf Church. She is survived by her husband, Walter W. Fillpek; her sons, Daniel M. (Jeanne) and James P. Fillpek; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild and her siblings. She was an aunt and great aunt to many.

Clarence G. Fredericksen was born on Mar. 21, 1918 in Dwight, Illinois. He passed away on Aug. 12, 2009 in Arlington Hts. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elsie; his children, Robert (Sharon) Fredericksen and Jeanne (Steven) Hoffman and his four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and brother, Lester. He was preceded in death by his son, David. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 15 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Arlington Hts. with interment in Memory Gardens cemetery.

Joan M. Fredriksen (nee Simon), 70, of Arlington Hts., died on Aug. 16, 2009. She was the wife of Fred A; mother of Daniel (Mary) Waggener, Debra Howe and David Waggener; stepmother of Kevin Fredriksen and Kim (John) Plummer; sister of Carol Schmitt, sister-in-law of Constance Fredriksen. Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 27, at Matz Funeral Home in Mt. Prospect.

Hazel Elaine Herter (nee Jarvi), of Arlington Hts., died on Aug. 24, 2009. She was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Superior, Wisc. She was a charter member of the Arlington Hts. Art Guild and served as an election judge in her community for many years. She is survived by her husband, Edward E. Herter; her sons, Christopher E. (Patti) Herter and Craig A. (Evelyne) Herter and granddaughters, Maija and Xinyan and her sisters. Visitation was at Meadows Funeral Home in Rolling Meadows. Plans for a memorial service are pending.

John Peter Hoferitza, 74, of Des Plaines, died on Aug. 20, 2009, in Arlington Hts. He was born Apr. 8, 1935 in Kenosha, Wisc. He was a chemical engineer for 22 years. He was the husband of Carol; father of John J. (Christina) and James (Beth); brother of Michael (late Irene) and the late William; grandfather of Matthew, Emily and Keithen. A memorial service was held on Aug. 22 at G.L. Hills Funeral Home in Des Plaines.

Helen Marie Kane, 81, of Niles, died on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Holy Family Acute Care Center. She was born July 3, 1928 in Fort Wayne, Ind. Before retirement, she was a receptionist in a medical office. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Kane. Funeral services were held at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home on Saturday, Aug. 22 and St. John Brebeuf Church. Interment was at Maryhill cemetery. She is survived by her son, Gregory Kane; daughter, Diane Schmidt; her siblings; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Donald L. Kruczek, 73, of Niles, died on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 in his home. He was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Chicago and before retirement was an insurance manager. Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 20, at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home and St. John Brebeuf Church. He is survived by his wife, Cecilia; sons, Gregory (Stacey) Kruczek and Douglas (Stacey) Kruczek and David Kruczek and eight grandchildren.

Marian G. "Peg" Lasher was born on Jan. 21, 1922 in Chicago and died Aug. 18, 2009 in Itasca. She is survived by her children, Susan L. (Les) Kroll, William C. (Janis) Lasher, Judith A. (David) Stratton, Margaret M. (Bill) DeVerna, Mary Pat (Chris) Kwiat and Timothy M. (Jill) Lasher; her 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lasher and her sister Patricia (Tom) Clifford. A memorial mass was held Friday, Aug. 21, at St. James Church in Arlington Hts. Interment was private.

Christopher James Leonard, 17, of South Dennis, Massachusetts, formerly of Arlington Hts., died Aug. 15, 2009 as a result of an auto accident. He was born Nov. 15, 1991, in Chicago. He was the son of James and Sandra Leonard and brother of Carley. A funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 22 at Meadows Funeral Home in Rolling Meadows. Interment at St. Joseph cemetery, River Grove.
Carl A. Maas

Funeral service for Carl A. Maas, 72, of Mt. Prospect, was held Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at Community Presbyterian Church in Mt. Prospect. He was born Dec. 4, 1936, in Chicago, and died Aug. 17. Mr. Maas served his country in the Navy and retired from IBM in 1992. His passion was aviation. He was the husband of Virginia L. Maas; father of Julie (Tom) Schnell and Cindy (Paul) Straub; grandfather of five. He is also survived by his sister and nephew.
