A funeral service for Jane E. Miller (nee Fitzgerald), 80, was held on Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 at Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, and Our Lady of Wayside Church, both in Arlington Hts. Entombment was in St. Michael the Archangel cemetery. She was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Chicago, and died Monday, Aug. 31 at Northwest Community Hospital. She was the wife of Sam L.; mother of Pamela J. Miller, Lawrence S. Miller, Kenneth J. (Joanne) Miller and Katherine M. (Matthew); grandmother of seven and a sister.

Chester W. Obrzut, 85, of Niles, died on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009 at Glenview Terrace Nursing Home. He was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Chicago and before retirement was a residential remodeling carpenter. He served in the Army. Funeral services were held at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home on Saturday, Aug. 29. Interment was private. He is survived by his wife, Marie C.; children, Jerry (Sue) Obrzut; Gary (Laurie) Obrzut; Cindy (Bobbie) Powell, Debbie (Tom) Black, Barbie LaCerra and Laurie Obrzut.

Prayers for Faustino N. Paelmo, M.D., 73, were said Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Grove Memorial Chapel, Elk Grove Village, proceeding to St. Julian Eymard Church. Interment will be in St. Michael the Archangel cemetery, Palatine. Born in Paete Laguana, Philippines, he died Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Alexian Brothers Medical Center. He was a retired physician from the State of Illinois Dept. of Mental Health. He served in the Navy and Air Force. He was the husband of Corazon M.M.D.; father of Giuseppe M. (Emily) and Gary M. and grandfather of three.

Daniel V. Penar, 76, of Arlington Hts., died on Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at Northwest Community Hospital. He was the husband of Virginia; father of William (Krystn) Penar and Cynthia (David) Bertulis; grandfather of Jessica and Timothy; brother of Elaine (Robert) Drufke, and the late Beatrice (James) Haff and Virginia Penar; uncle to many nieces and nephews. Prayers were said Tuesday, Sept. 1 at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd. in Arlington Hts. to St. James Church. Interment at Maryhill cemetery.

Mary R. Rauh, (nee Zapp), 87, of Elk Grove Village, died on Aug. 25, 2009 at Lexington Health Care in Schaumburg. She was born in Sellersburg, Indiana, and was a homemaker. She was the wife of the late Charles G; mother of JoAnne (William) Peters, James J. (Cheryl) Rauh, Pamela J. (Ron) Standley, Richard M. Rauh and the late Charles, Jr.; grandmother of five; great-grandmother of three. She is also survived by her siblings, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 31 at Queen of the Rosary Church. Entombment at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum.

Richard S. Tafel, 69, husband of Patricia (nee Tarkelly), died on Aug. 31, 2009 at home. He was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Chicago. Mr. Tafel was the father of Cindy (Mike) Puckett, Kelly (Shelia) Street, Erick (Kelly) Tafel and the late Frank Street; grandfather of Jose, Dan, Carlos, Travis, Jessica, Jonny, Hannah, Haley and Lee; great-grandfather of Austin, Timmy, Jackson and Kayla, son of Theresa Tafel; brother of Lorraine (Jim) Springer and Phyllis Kovach. Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 4 at Friedrichs Funeral Home and St. Emily Church. Interment at All Saints cemetery.

Lisa Tousignant (nee Ryan), 47, of Round Lake, formerly of Mt. Prospect, died on Aug. 25, 2009. She was born on May 21, 1962, in Chicago. She loved her kids, playing Scrabble and had a passion for animals. She was an avid gardener. She was the mother of Scott, Ernst, Dan Viken and Michelle Tousignant; daughter of Betty Millar and Jerome Ryan; sister of Cynthia Ryan, Jerome (Eileen) Ryan and William Millar and aunt of many.
Maria Utley

Maria Utley, 87, died on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at Lutheran General Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Italy and came to America at a young age. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald. Mrs. Utley is survived by her daughters, Vera (Michael) Martin and Rena (Robert) Ancona and her son, Rodney C.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and brother, Michael Danzi. A funeral mass was held at St. Zachary Catholic Church on Saturday, Aug. 29. Interment was private. Severino's River Woods Chapels in Des Plaines handled the arrangements.
John C. Volpe

John C. Volpe was born on Jan. 2, 1927, in Chicago, and died on Sept. 1, 2009 at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village. He is survived by his daughters, Susan (Tom) Eccles and Sharon Volpe, his grandchildren, Ashley, John, Megan and Danny, his brother, Dan (Marie) Volpe; sister, Theresa DiMeo and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Volpe and sister, Rosemary Vitagliano. A mass was held on Saturday, Sept. 5 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Mt. Prospect with interment at Mt. Carmel cemetery, Hillside.
Robert C. Atherton
Of Palatine
Robert C. Atherton, 82, of Plum Grove Estates, Palatine, was born July 16, 1927 in Grand Rapids, MI and died Sept. 6, 2009.
Mr. Atherton is survived by his wife of 51 years, Martha, and son John Curry Atherton of Portland, Oregon.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sons Robert David and Richard Hillary.
He served in the U.S. Army and using the G.I. Bill, he received a degree in foreign trade from the Latin American Institute. The first languages he studied were Spanish, French and Portuguese. Following employment with the Maloo Machinery Co., he embarked on a plan to build a business in Mexico. While this did not take off, he traveled over 7, 000 miles on a bicycle to become acquainted with many European countries, as well as Northwestern Africa.
In 1953, he founded Raco Industrial Corp, serving as a Board member at all levels of the Machinery Dealers National Assn and president from 1970 to 1972. He was also the first U.S. dealer to become a member at all levels of the then A.E.M.T.M. and was the first to be honored as a "Fellow" with the Europeans.
He traveled around the world five times, climbing over 230 mountains on six continents, and river rafting and boating on over 214 rivers.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 17, at Countryside Church in Palatine, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

A memorial gathering and service for Ruth E. Birman, a Des Plaines community artist, were held Sept. 12, 2009 in Severino's River Woods Funeral Chapel, Des Plaines. A native of Chicago, she died Sept. 3 surrounded by her family. She was 76 years old and a 30-year resident of Des Plaines.She was a long-time member of the Des Plaines Art Guild and volunteered in child care services at Holy Family Hospital for many years. She also volunteered for Omni Family Services. Widow of the late William L. Birman, she is survived bv children Janis (Mike) Holleran and Robert (Linda) Birman; and grandchildren Nicole Trumbull, Carly Birman, and Megan Birman.
Charles A. Bollinger

Charles A. Bollinger, 55, of Elk Grove Village, died on Sept. 5, 2009 at Alexian Brothers Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. He worked for 37 years with Allstate Insurance of Northbrook. Mass was held on Sept. 10 at St. Julian Eymard Church in Elk Grove Village. Entombment at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Hillside. He is survived by his wife, Denise; children, Jeanette M. (Richard) Carnaghi, DeAnna M. Andrews, Charles D. Bollinger, Robert D. Andrews, and Susan E. Bollinger and his two grandchildren and siblings.
Richard E. Carlini
Formerly of Des Plaines, Palatine
A memorial service for Richard E. Carlini, 77, of Barrington, was held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 14, 2009 at Davenport Family Funeral Home in Barrington. Pastor Diane Johnson officiated.
Mr. Carlini was born Feb. 9, 1932 in Cicero, he died Sept. 9, in Chicago. Burial will be private. Visitation was Monday, Sept. 14, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the funeral home.
He lived in Cicero until 1960, when he moved to Des Plaines. He moved to Palatine in 1979 and Barrington in 1998.
He graduated from Morton High School in 1950, and received a B.S. in Education from Northwestern University in 1956 and a M.S. in Education in 1962 from Northern Illinois University, with an additional 30 hours beyond the M.S. requirements. During the Korean War, he served as an engineman in the Navy from 1952 until 1955. He retired in 1986, after 34 years at Maine West High School where the taught physical education, as well as eight years as athletic director. He was a member of Cross & Crown Lutheran Church in Arlington Hts. In addition to being an outstanding P.E. teacher, football and wrestling coach, he was also a woodworker, craftsman and artist. He was a skilled sailor and loved all types of boats. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a good friend to all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Heide; sons Richard (Paula) of Barrington Hills and Perry (Jenny) of Crystal Lake; stepson Todd Ryland (Donna) Kemp of Carol Stream, grandchildren Diana and Eva Carlini and Anthony, Vincent, and Sophia Carlini. He was preceded in death by his parents, Constantino and Susan Carlini; brothers Nello, Harvey, Robert and Norman Carlini and sisters-in-law Dorothy and Helen Carlini.

Barbara M. Fowler, 72, died on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009. She recently moved to Aurora and was a 20-year-resident of Des Plaines. Mrs. Fowler was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph. She is survived by her children, Norman (Ruth) Stilphen, David Stilphen, Carrie (John) Thibodoux, Michael (Rita) Stilphen, Steven (Billingslea) and Lynda (Paul) Hansell; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
