David Custer Hall
Longtime Chicago resident, businessman and supporter of the arts
David Custer Hall, 67, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Sept. 10, 2009 in his home in Lakeview.
Mr. Hall grew up in North Vernon, Ind., where he formed an early love of music. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Indiana University School of Music and his Master's from Northwestern University. For many years, he played the oboe. For a time, he taught and directed the high school band in Three Oaks, MI. Mr. Hall then moved to Chicago, where he lived for the rest of his life. For several years, Mr. Hall taught humanities at Wright Junior College, in the mid-1970s with a partner he began a small real estate development business on the North side. Mr. Hall's interest in real estate development in Chicago grew to become his very successful professional career, first as a sales associate and ultimately as senior vice president and managing broker in the Lincoln Park Plaza office of Coldwell Banker, one of the top sales producing offices in the country. Mr. Hall served a term as president of the Chicago Board of Realtors, and in 2002 was named Chicago Realtor of the year.
Mr. Hall was devoted to the arts as a subscriber and a collector. He was especially passionate about the opera, and his progress from a balcony seat at the Chicago Lyric Opera in 1970 to five front-row seats for the past 15 years traced his rising success as a businessman.
Mr. Hall was a man of many interests and accomplishments. In 1991, he fulfilled a long-time ambition of riding his bicycle across the country. He was a world traveler, visiting more than 35 countries over the years, always in the company of friends who shared his enthusiasm for seeing the places of the world and experiencing their cultures. He often said that he was living the life he envisioned for himself as a boy growing up in a small town in Indiana. For all his success and accomplishments, those who knew David Hall would say that what distinguished him most were his extraordinary qualities as a person - his kindness, his understanding, his giving of himself and his experience to others. At his office, over 200 sales associates looked to him daily for advice and guidance. His home was always open to friends and visitors. He was regarded as a man of integrity, loyalty and loving kindness. In his family, he was loved as a brother, uncle and stalwart supporter.
David Hall was preceded in death by his father, Paul Custer Hall, his mother, Dorothy Hollister Hall, and his brother, Bruce Hollister Hall. He is survived by his brother, Warren Keith Hall, and by numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service for David Hall will be held at the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue in Chicago on Monday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. The family requests that gifts in memory of David Hall be made to the Hollister-Hall Scholarship Fund, Jennings County Community Foundation, 265 East Main St., North Vernon, Ind. 47265.
