Donald Schnake
EG Football Coach

A funeral service for Donald Schnake, 82, former long-time successful football coach at Elk Grove High School, was held Friday, June 25, at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Elk Grove Village.
Arrangements are by Grove Memorial Chapel.
A native of Centralia, IL, Schnake died June 17 at his home in Huntley. He starred on a state runner-up basketball team at Centralia High School, later served in the Marines at the end of World War II, and played for Bradley University’s 1949-50 basketball team that was second in the NIT and NCAA tournaments.
He later became a teacher and coach at Elk Grove High School and coached the Grens to a mythical state championship in 1972, before the IHSA’s state playoffs started. Schnake was Elk Grove’s head coach from 1968 to 1987, compiling a 110-74-1 record.
He was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and was the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame 2007 VIP award winner.
Surviving are his widow, Marilyn, sons Lew and Logan, and daughters Lynn and Leann.

Robert E. Smeenge
Of Rolling Meadows

Robert Eugene Smeenge, 79, formerly of Rolling Meadows, passed away on Tuesday, June 22 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Hts.
Smeenge was born Mar. 25, 1931, in Holland, MI. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict serving in the navy.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 26 at Meadows Baptist Church in Rolling Meadows.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Matthew (Jenne), Bryan (Sara), James (Tracy), Paul (Meghan), Mark (Beth), and Carol (John) Bates; and grandchildren.

Sally Apollaro
Of Buffalo Grove

A funeral service for Sally Apollaro, 92, of Buffalo Grove, was held in Skaja Terrace Funeral Home, Niles, on Dec. 5. Interment followed in Maryhill cemetery. A native of Chicago, she died Dec. 1 in Northwest Community Hospital. She worked as a checker in a grocery store. Husbands Dominick Apollaro and Ronald Rigenstrup preceded her in death. Surviving are children Carol Ungaro of Buffalo Grove, and Ronald Rigenstrup; son-in-law Mark Frydenlund, daughter-in-law Lucille Frydenlund; and grandchildren Ronald (Bianca) Rigenstrup, Robert (Theresa) Rigenstrup, and Lisa (Daniel) Steinhauer; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials are requested to the American Cancer Society, 625 North Ct., Suite 280, and Palatine, IL 60067.

Viola S. Bond
Of Des Plaines

Interment for Viola "Vi" S. Bond, 101, of Des Plaines, was held at Lake Louise Christian Community in Boyne Falls, Mich. Ms. Bond was born March 22, 1907 in Willmas, Minnesota. She passed away December 3, 2008 in Arlington Heights. Ms. Bond worked as a secretary for six years and eight years at Garrett E.T. Seminary. She was a member of the professional secretary institution, First United Methodist Women's Club and the National Wildlife Association. Ms. Bond is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by husband Cyril B. Bond. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, 2121 Sheridan Rd., Evanston IL 60201.

Lee Allen Damler
Army veteran

A funeral service for Lee Allen Damler, 69, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at St. John United Church of Christ in Arlington Heights. Visitation took place Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Meadows Funeral Home. Interment will be at Memory Gardens cemetery. Mr. Damler was born March 20, 1939 in Chicago. He was a veteran of the Army and worked as a system analyst for Uarco and Standard Registrar for many years. Mr. Damler is survived by wife Jean, children Greg (Joann) and Brett (Dawn), grandchildren Jason, Cameron and Caleb Dalmer, Rachel and Megan Cocker and sister Laura (James) Doyle. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 South Hager, Barrington IL 60010.

Margaret Embree
Of Elk Grove Village

A funeral service for Margaret Ann Embree, 72, of Elk Grove Village, was held Monday, Dec. 8, at Grove Memorial Chapel. Visitation took place prior to the service. Interment was at Elm Lawn cemetery. Ms. Embree was born in Chicago. She was a 41 year resident of Elk Grove. She passed away on Dec. 4, 2008 at Alexian Brothers Medical Center. Ms. Embree is survived by brother George (Nancy) Gilmore, sister Florance Filmer (late Robert) and granddaughter Rebecca Hules, son-in-law Rodney Word and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by husband Roscoe "Rocky" and daughter Cheryl Word.

Sarah Flynn
Of Edison Park

A funeral Mass for Sarah Flynn (nee Monaghan), 70, took place on Saturday, Nov. 29 at St. Juliana Church. Interment was at All Saints cemetery in Des Plaines. Visitation was Friday, Nov. 28 at Cooney Funeral Home in Park Ridge. Mrs. Flynn was a native of Stonefield, County Mayo, Ireland. She died on Nov. 24, 2008 surrounded by her family. Her parents Martin and Bridget (nee Connelly) Monaghan and her brother Michael preceded her in death. Her husband James Joseph Flynn; her children Angela (Kevin) McCune, David (Elizabeth Tarzia), Marian, John (Carol), James C.F.D. (Kathleen), Eileen (Larry) Kowalczyk, and Martin; her grandchildren Nathaniel, Sarah, Elise, Ethan, Molly, Grace, Thomas, John, Michael, Ian, Abigail, David, Kevin, Bridget, Lauren, Olivia, Owen, Celia, Vivian, and Eleanor; her siblings Pat (late Rita), Bridget (Harry) Patton, Martin, John, Kathleen Caffrey, Margaret (Pat) Barrett, Tony, and Vincent (Judy); her siblings-in-law Marian Prendergast, Helen and Patrick Roland, and Sister Estella Flynn C.C.V.I.; and her nieces and nephews including Megan and Christine survive her. Gary M. Goezkowski
Of Des Plaines

Funeral services for Gary M. Goezkowski will be held tomorrow (Saturday), Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. Mourners will gather at Oehler Funeral Home at 9:15 a.m. and proceed to St. Mary's Church for a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass. Entombment follows at Maryhill cemetery. Visitation will be held today (Friday) at Oehler Funeral Home from 3 to 9 p.m. Goezkowski lived in Des Plaines for 32 years. He was born on April 28, 1950 in Chicago and died in Elk Grove Village on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008. He was 58 years old. Goezkowski worked as a pressman at the Chicago Tribune and served as a trustee for the National Association of Letter Carriers Union Local #2810 for 15 years. Goezkowski is survived by his wife Jan (nee Drelicharz), children Andrew (Bridgett) and Amanda Goezkowski, brothers Ronald (Joanne) and Gregory (Alice) Goezkowski, mother-in-law Lillian Drelicharz, sister-in-laws Donna (Brett) Weeks and Tammy (Glen) Morgan, nephews Scott (Kristen) and Douglas (Jessica) Goezkowski and nieces Marcia and Karin Goezkowski and Lily Morgan. He is preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Irene and father-in-law Frank Drelicharz.

Alice A. Kosac
66 year resident Of Des Plaines

A funeral Mass for Alice A. Kosac, 86, took place Thursday, Dec. 11 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Des Plaines. Prayers preceded at G.L. Hills Funeral Home in Des Plaines. Entombment was at All Saints cemetery in Des Plaines. Visitation was Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the funeral home. Mrs. Kosac was born on May 20, 1922 in Bainbridge, Ga. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary Church. She was a loving, warm, and wonderful person and died on Dec. 8, 2008 at Northwest Community Healthcare Center in Arlington Heights. Her husband Anthony F. Kosac preceded her in death. Her children Paul A. Kosac and Frances A. Kosac, her grandchildren Anthony S. Kosac and Spencer P. Kosac, and her dear and longtime friend Emma Lloyd survive her. In lieu of flowers, Masses or contributions to the American Lung Assoc. are appreciated.

Ann Marie Kosowski
Of Elk Grove Village

A funeral service for Ann Marie Kosowski, of Elk Grove Village, was held Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at St. Julian Eymard Church. Visitation took place prior to the service at Grove Memorial Chapel. Interment was at Resurrection cemetery. Ms. Kosowski was a 12-year resident of Elk Grove. She is survived by children Dolores A. (Joseph) Messina and Robert E. (Lynn) Kosowski, brother Ted Mezyk, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by husband Edward and siblings Joseph Mezyk, Stella Nagle and Jean Kowalski.

Margaret Lanham
Of Rolling Meadows

A funeral service for Margaret R. Lanham of Rolling Meadows (nee Renwick) of Rolling Meadows, 98, was held Friday, Dec. 5 at Meadows Funeral Home in Rolling Meadows. She was born on June 26, 1910 in Scotland. She died Wednesday, Dec. 3. She worked for the Federal Reserve Bank for many years. She is survived by her sister, Isabella Freed, Christine Peterson, Janet Hill; brother, George Renwick; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lanham was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley; and sister, Ann Knight. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Paul Joseph Montalbano
Army veteran Of Morton Grove

Funeral services for Paul Joseph Montalbano were held on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the Skaja Funeral Home and Our Lady of Ransom Church in Niles with interment at St. Joseph's cemetery. Visitation was held Monday, Dec. 1. Montalbano was born in Chicago on March 21, 1921 and died at Rainbow Hospice Ark on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008. Montalbano was a veteran serving in the United States Army and was recently employed in a municipal public works department taking care of maintenance. Montalbano is survived by his wife Nancy and daughters Martha (Walter) Kazakeich, Vivian Luka and Paula (Keith) Pasowicz. Montalbano was preceded in death by his parents Mariano and Martha (nee Guerra) Montalbano.

Patrick Joseph Morrissey
Of Buffalo Grove

Funeral services for Patrick Joseph Morrissey, 80, of Buffalo Grove were held on Monday, Nov. 30 at Kolssak Funeral Home and St. Mary's Church with interment following at St. Mary cemetery. Morrissey is survived by his wife Audrey (nee Sheehan) children; Kathleen (John Watts Morrissey, James (Deborah) Morrissey, Thomas (Marilyn) Morrissey, Maureen (Gerd) Gerdes and Kevin (Tracey) Morrissey, grandchildren; Charlene, Lauren, Christian, Ryan, Kaitlyn and Sean, brother Duffy and many nieces and nephews. Morrissey was preceded in death by his brother, James.

Gertrude Pilch

A funeral service for Gertrude P. Pilch, 81, of Des Plaines, was held Tuesday, Dec. 9, at St. Emily Church. Visitation took place Monday, Dec. 8, at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home. Interment was at Maryhill cemetery. Ms. Pilch was born May 4, 1927 in Chicago. She worked as a manager at Sears for many years. She passed away on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at Lutheran General Hospital. Ms. Pilch is survived by brother Walter F. (Maria) Pilch, friend Lorraine Trent and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by parents Walter A. and Anna and sister Mary Ann (William) Price.

Mary C. Romano
Of Arlington Heights

Funeral services for Mary C. Romano were held at the Skaja Terrace Funeral Home and St. John Brebeuf Church in Niles on Saturday, Nov. 29. Romano was born in Chicago in on January 26, 1927 and died at Church Creek Nursing Home on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008. She was 81-years-old. Romano is survived by her daughters Patricia Calarco, Barbara (Dean) Dietzman and Debroah (John) Gorack, grandchildren Dena, Laura, Vicki, Jennifer, Frank, John, Michael and Marie. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Angelline (nee Kaus) Cyza, husband John Romano and daughter Marie (Vince) Zingarelli.

Robert Bush Salzman

A funeral Service for Robert Bush Salzman, 82, a life-long resident of Mt. Prospect, was held Dec. 5 in Faith Lutheran Church, Arllington Hts. Cremation was private. Arrangements were by Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, Arlington Hts. A native of Chicago, he died Nov. 28 in Atlanta, Ga. He was employed for 30+ years at Milburn Brothers Construction Co. in Mt. Prospect, and served as vice president of sales. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy M. Surviving are his children, Karen (John) Owen, and Bob; grandchildren Jennifer, Andy, Jack, Emily Rob, and Carly, and a brother, Joseph (the late Martha) Salzman. Memorials are requested to the American Cancer Society.

Dixie Schmit

A funeral service for Dixie Lorene Schmit, 94, was held Saturday, Dec. 6 at St. Mary Church. Visitation was held at Oehler Funeral Home in Des Plaines. Ms. Schmit was born in Texas but lived most of her adult life in Chicago. She worked as a waitress and later retired from the Chicago Park Dist. She was part of a trampoline act called Chase & Park. She passed away at Deerbrook Care. Ms. Schmit is survived by children John (Margaret) Schmit Jr. and Barbara (Raymond) Brannigan-Hutson, grandchildren Daniel (Tracy Walter) Brannigan, Gy Sgt. Martin Brannigan and Kevin (Monja West) Brannigan, great-grandchildren Daniel Brannigan, Sgt. Michael (Brandi) Brannigan, Alyssa Rose Brannigan, Jonathan Brannigan, Ryan Brannigan, Raymond West and Steven West and great-great grandchild Michael Brannigan Jr. She is preceded in death by husband John, daughter Mary Margaret Brannigan, five sisters and one brother. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Respiratory Health Association or Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Arrangements were by Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, Arlington Hts. A native of Chicago, she died Nov. 29 in Northwest Community Hospital. She was a graduate of Providence of God High School and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert A. Smith. Surviving are her children, Nora DeFrancisco, Mary Pat (Richard) Miller, Margaret (Patrick) Bucaro, William (Deborah) Smith, and Eileen (Benny Redzepi; grandchildren Joseph, Regina, and Margaret DeFrancisco; Brendan (Heather) Miller, Charles (Tami) Miller; Michael, Francis, Patrick, and Anthony Bucaro; Alex, William Jr. and Annie Smith; Sophia, Adem, Alben, Adriana and Nora Redzepi; and great-grandchildren Aurora, Conrad, Aidan, Jack, and Renee.
