He is preceded in death by his late wife, Margaret (nee Nannucci); parents James and Rose and brothers John and Eric. Mr. Goleas was born on Feb. 7, 1919 in Chicago. The brother of John and Eric, Tom was the middle son born to Greek immigrant parents who were proprietors of a grocery store. His parents recognized their son's artistic talent and despite the financial strain during the Depression, they encouraged him to pursue a career in art. At the age of 16, he left high school to work full time for Vogue-Wright Studio in Chicago. Determined to earn his high school diploma, Goleas completed his studies at night. Shortly after marrying Margaret Nannucci in 1943, Goleas was drafted into the Army and served in a chemical weapons unit in Alabama. Realizing that his talents were more artistic, his superiors had him create posters for war bond drives and requested that he paint officers' portraits. Following his service during World War II, Goleas returned to Chicago to resume his career as a commercial illustrator and to begin a family. The Goleas' soon moved to Des Plaines with their daughters Gloria and Gail.
After years of working in art studios, Goleas established his own freelance illustration studio in Chicago. In his semi-retirement, he was an active member of artist guilds in the Northwest suburbs and an optimistic golfer at Lake Park Golf Course. Goleas loyally rooted for the Cubs, complained about the cost of gas, voted for Democrats (except for Reagan) and taught his grandson how to play golf and be a good man. As a resident of Addolorata Villa, he loved the company of friends and took great pleasure in sharing his love for art with everyone he met. Throughout his life, Goleas remained hopeful, encouraging and affectionate no matter the challenges he faced. "One of the things that is really interesting is that my father made his living as a commercial illustrator. He worked for many companies and then opened his own studio in Des Plaines, " said Gail Goleas. "He specialized in people and he longed to do fine arts. He didn't have time for it until he retired in 1975. His work was his passion. "When he was 80, he decided to do a montage of Des Plaines and he was determined to get it done, " added Goleas. "The montage is now on display in the Des Plaines Public Library. Here he was 80 years old, had a leg wound, moved to Addolorata and was busy with portraits. One of his works was a beautiful portrait of Jesus, which he did when he was 87. It's now at St. Emily's." According to Goleas, her father fell and had to have brain surgery, but he still continued painting. He wanted to die with his paintbrush in his hand. "I truly think he was an amazing man, " she said. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Addolorata Villa. Arrangements were made by Severino's River Woods Funeral Chapels in Des Plaines.
