Catherine "Cathy" Louise Darin
Catherine "Cathy" Louise Darin, 63, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at her home in Naperville after a yearlong battle with thyroid cancer.
Born Dec. 7, 1939, in New York City to Frank and Hazel Connors, she grew up in the Mount Washington neighborhood of Pittsburgh, graduating from St. Mary of the Mount High School in 1957 and from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in 1961, with a bachelor of science in elementary education.
She moved to Berwyn in 1964 and was a teacher at Betsy Ross Elementary School in Forest Park. In 1965, she married
Jack Darin and moved to Munster, Ind. Cathy and Jack had five sons - Jack, Tom, Bob, Mike and Jim. In 1971, the growing family moved to Chat Court in Naperville, where Cathy lived, prayed, decorated and redecorated her home using ducks and artwork to match the furniture. After 32 years and countless pleadings to her children, the job of cleaning the garage remains a work in progress. Those wishing to help the family in their difficult time are invited to help with this task, as well as to clean, organize, rake leaves and perform other assorted tasks that remain incomplete, given the rather lengthy nature of this list. We are all thankful that Cathy touched so many.
Her husband, Jack, died from cancer after a long illness in 1984, leaving Cathy with five sons ages 7 to 17. It is said by many that she earned her express ticket to heaven many times over in dealing with the challenging and endless "situations" presented by raising her five boys. She credited the love and support from St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Naperville with helping her through that difficult time, and soon became interested in ministering to others suffering the loss of loved ones. She was fondly known as Naperville's "Queen of Grief."
Transitioning from this loss to bereavement ministry, she established grief support groups and served as chaplain for Edward Hospital in Naperville and for the Naperville Police Department, as well as dedicating her time as a wake coordinator for Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home in Naperville. For two decades, she provided love and support during the most difficult moments of the lives of countless Naperville residents. She survived a bout with breast cancer in 1993 and resumed her ministry with a renewed dedication.
At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by her family and friends. She moved into the next life listening - repeatedly - to her favorite song, "Proud Mary." At this time, there is no correlation between seven consecutive "Proud Mary"s and Cathy's transcending to a better place.
Two weeks before her death, Cathy was surprised by hundreds of her friends, family and the faith community of St. Raphael's Catholic Church with a surprise Mass and celebration of her life. She had the remarkable opportunity to experience how she had truly touched so many lives through her endless reserves of empathy, compassion and good humor. Moved by the outpouring of support, she reflected, "This is the most wonderful moment of my life to see all of these people here today ... and to be able to know that God is so good. My life has been such a gift."
She is survived by five sons, three grandchildren and three siblings.
Her sons are Jack, married
to Rhonda, living in Evanston; Tom, living in Jackson Hole, Wyo.; Bob, married
to Sarah and living in Kennebunk, Maine; Mike, living in Minneapolis; and Jim, living in Naperville. Her three grandchildren are Caroline and Catherine of Bob and Sarah; and Jack Thomas (J.T.) of Jack and Rhonda. Her siblings are a brother, Jack Connors, married
to Joan and living in Pittsburgh; a sister, Phyllis Hartt, married
to Chuck and living in Chicago; and a brother, Jim Connors, married
to Marlene and living in Washington, D.C.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.
A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, 1215 Modaff Road, Naperville, followed by burial at SS Peter and Paul cemetery in Naperville. Everyone is asked to meet at the church.
Donations to the Police Chaplain's Fund, 1350 Aurora Ave., Naperville, IL 60540, will be much appreciated by the family to commemorate and continue Cathy's grief ministry to those in the community at their time of need.
