Charles B. Barr
Charles B. Barr, 91, of Oswego passed away Sunday, May 9, 2004. He was born Oct. 30, 1912, in North Judson, Ind., and moved to the Chicago-Naperville area in 1936.
Charles Barr had served as Lisle tax assessor for many years and also taught tax appraisal at the national level.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth L. Barr; two sons, Duane Barr of Naperville and Peter Barr of Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, May 29, at DuPage Unitarian Church, 4S535 Old Naperville Road, Naperville.
Kenneth J. 'Ken' Battista
Kenneth J. "Ken" Battista, 57, of Naperville died suddenly Wednesday, May 12, 2004, in Miami Beach, Fla. He was born March 27, 1947, in Newark, N.J.
He was currently serving as vice president of Exel. He was previously the president of the Warehousing Education and Research Council. He has been a resident of the Naperville area for the past seven years and also a homeowner in Blowing Rock, N.C. He was also a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Kotarba) of Naperville; his beloved son, Michael (wife Nicole) Battista of Chicago; his beloved daughter, Mariana Battista of Naperville; and his cherished granddaughter, Isabella Battista.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mario and Lorraine Battista.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Grace United Methodist Church, 300 E. Gartner Road, Naperville.
Interment will be private.

Dennis L. Preston
Dennis L. Preston, 52, died peacefully Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, Wis. He was surrounded by his family, friends and dogs. He was born July 2, 1951, in Aurora, the son of John G. and Lois Marie (Zaininger) Preston. He was united in marriage to Christine Reimer on Aug. 17, 1974, in Knoxville, Iowa. Dennis and Christine met at Drake University, where Dennis was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
Having battled ALS (Lou Gerhig's disease) for three months, Dennis was thankful for the very special people who supported him with visits at home and in the hospital, thoughtful cards, phone calls and many prayers. He will be remembered for his love of family and friends and his dedication to youth soccer, including eight-plus years of coaching, involvement in church and participation in numerous sports leagues as a player. He was a trained befriender at McFarland Lutheran Church, but, first and foremost, he was a true befriender in life. He enjoyed card club, golf, softball, boating and playing pool, but, most of all, he loved being with family and friends, who made these activities enjoyable for him.
He is survived by his wife, Chris; his daughter, Lindsay of Chicago; and his son, John of Whitewater, Wis. He is further survived by his mother-in-law, Dorothy Reimer of Madison; his brother, Ron of Naperville; his half brother, Todd Harshbarger; two sisters-in-law, Charlene and Margaret; and his stepmother, Amy Preston of Brookfield. He is further survived by his nieces, Johanna, Jill, Kristen, Lauren and Allison; and his nephews, Mike, Jake, Justin, Christopher, Michael and Zachary. Also surviving are his three dogs, Gipper, Annie and Maggie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Donna Martin; his sister-in-law, Kathleen Reimer; and his father-in-law, Charles Reimer.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at McFarland Lutheran Church, 5529 Marsh Road, McFarland, WI 53558. The Rev. Terry Peterson will preside.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dane County Humane Society, 5132 Voges Road, Madison, WI 53718; McFarland Lutheran Church; ALS Division, Muscular Dystrophy Association, 3300 E. Casimir J. Biernacki
Casimir "Charlie" J. Biernacki, 87, of Chicago, for a period of time as a commuter to Aurora and recently of Naperville, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2004.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving during and after the war in France and Germany, he was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Bridgeport Post 5079 in Chicago. After service, he returned to work at Young Spring and Wire, until the plant closed in 1977. He then worked for several more years at the former Standard Federal Savings and Loan (now TCF Bank) before retiring to watch over his grandchildren and volunteer at Georgetown Elementary School in Aurora. He was a parishioner at St. Barbara Church in Chicago for more than 60 years.
He married
his beloved Marian (Kuczynski) in December 1941, and cared for her as best he could throughout their years together, and even more fervently after February 1958, until her passing in July 1986.
Survivors include a son, Bernard (wife Mary) Biernacki; two grandchildren, Katherine and Adam; two siblings, Lillian "Lucha" Harkink and Edward (wife Adeline); and a loyal friend of 47 years, "Bill W." Also, many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Helena (Raczkowski); four siblings, Walter, Virginia, Mary and Veronica; and several in-laws.
Visitation will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Pomierski Funeral Home, 1059 W. 32nd St., Chicago, and at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 6, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Barbara Catholic Church, 2859 S. Throop St., Chicago.
Entombment will be at Resurrection cemetery in Justice.

Peter M. Wegmann
Peter M. Wegmann, 65, a 30-year resident of Naperville, died suddenly Thursday, May 20, 2004, at his home. He was born March 1, 1939, in Montreal.
He had graduated from Darcy McGee High School and Loyola College in Montreal. He also was a graduate of the New York Institute of Finance. He had been a senior vice president of National Security Bank of Chicago, then president of Capital Bank of Westmont and was on the board of both banks. He was next vice president of Cherry Communications. At the time of his death, he was founder, owner and president of the family owned and operated business, MRIC Mortgage Corp. Throughout his life, he was a staunch supporter of Maryville Academy.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra (Beauregard) Wegmann; a son, Kurt Thomas Wegmann; a daughter, Kristen Suzanne (husband Leslie) Cady; a sister, Anne Hufenbach; a niece, Andrea Hufenbach; an uncle, John Brandeis; and his two granddogs, Dusty and Gracie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Anna (Brandeis) Wegmann.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 28, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville.
A funeral service will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at the funeral home and proceed to a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Raphael Church, 1215 Modaff Road, Naperville.
Interment will follow at SS Peter and Paul cemetery in Naperville.
Mr. Wegmann was an organ donor and memorials in his name may be made to the Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Network.
Mary Jane (Crowley) Redding
Mary Jane (Crowley) Redding, 85, of Naperville died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born Feb. 21, 1919, in Chicago and attended DePaul University. Mrs. Redding moved to Naperville in 1989 from Oak Park.
She is survived by five sons, Herbert W. (wife Anne) Redding of Naperville, Robert J. (wife Patrice) Redding of Naperville, John P. Redding of Glen Ellyn, Martin J. Redding of Naperville and Daniel C. (wife Lyn) Redding of Warner-Robins, Ga.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert J. Redding; her parents, William R. and Elizabeth (Masterson) Crowley; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Margaret Morrissy.
A memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, May 24, at St. Patrick's Residence, 1400 Brookdale Road, Naperville.
Interment will be private.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at St. Patrick's.

Allan Laverne Book
Allan Laverne Book, 86, of Kankakee died Monday, May 3, 2004, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. He was born Feb. 16, 1918, in Naperville.
He was owner and operator of A.L. Book and Co. and a member of the Chicago Board of Trade. As an entrepreneur, he was engaged in several land developments. Horse racing was his hobby.
He is survived by a daughter, Cassandra (husband David) Byelich of East Lansing, Mich.; a granddaughter, Courtney Ann Byelich; two sisters, Audrey Book of Chicago and Grace Stover of Naperville; a sister-in-law, Mary Chobar of Plainfield; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Marie (Harvey), whom he married
March 25, 1996; his parents, John Jacob and Adrienne (Rickert) Book; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Albert Stover, Vernon and Agnes Book, Glenn Book, John Book, Homer and Dorothy Book; and a nephew, Ron Book.
A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Schreffler Funeral Home, 1900 W. Court St., Kankakee.
Burial will be at Naperville cemetery in Naperville.

Randolph B. Tendall
Randolph B. Tendall, 87, of Mountain Home, Ark., formerly of Naperville, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home. He was born March 20, 1917, in Yorkville.
He was a retired insurance adjuster for State Farm Insurance Co. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 52, VFW Post 3246, Moose Lodge 1953 and the Twin Lakes Golf Club.
He married
Dorothy Buttner on Dec. 15, 1996, in Mountain Home.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Tendall; a brother, Laurence Tendall and wife, Helen; five stepchildren, Charles Buttner, Maureen Fancher, Cynthia Nixon, Edward Keller and Kathy Cook; and numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Randolph and Laura (Wood) Tendall.
Private burial will be at Helmar Lutheran cemetery in Newark, Ill.

John M. Leatherbury
John M. Leatherbury, 49, a resident of Sugar Grove, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 14, 2004, of a brain aneurysm while on a business trip in Normal, Ill. He was born August 21, 1954, in Coldwater, Mich., the son of Ralph and Mildred (Mohr) Leatherbury.
John and Teri were married
on August 30, 1980, in Naperville. They were looking forward to celebrating their 24th wedding anniversary in 2004.
He grew up in Sherwood, Mich., and was a graduate of Union City High School, Union City, Mich. He graduated magna cum laude from Central Michigan University in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in broadcast and cinematic arts. While attending college and after graduation he was a news reporter and photographer for the Union City Register Tribune.
On Dec. 5, 1977, he became a second-generation Farm Credit System employee when he joined the Federal Land Bank of St. Louis as a marketing specialist. In 1986, he was asked to join the senior management ream of Farm Credit Services of Northern Illinois in Kaneville, Ill., as their chief marketing and communications officer. He had been serving as vice president of marketing for 1st Farm Credit Services in Normal.
He was a member of the National Agri Marketing Association and the Cooperative Communications Association (CCA). He served on the CCA board of directors for many years and was president of the organization from 1988 to 1989. He received CCA's Michael Graznak Award for Outstanding Young Communicator in 1986. He also was the recipient of several awards for excellence in communication from CCA and the Farm Credit System.
He had a passion for collecting antiques and collectibles, gardening, travel, the history of his hometown area in Michigan and family genealogy. He was a member of the Sugar Grove Family Past Finders genealogy group, the branch County, Mich., Genealogical Society, and the Fox Valley Genealogical Society. He spent countless hours helping Teri create a beautiful garden they both loved in the yard of their Sugar Grove home and was "the family's chief gardener," planting and nurturing a large vegetable garden each year at Mike and Candy's home in Somonauk. John and Teri discovered together many of their favorite spots around the world through travel; with some of his best-remembered being the farms he visited or stayed at in Scotland and Ireland.
His family, friends and colleagues will remember John as a quiet, warm and thoughtful person with an incredible sense of humor that would shine through at just the perfect moment.
He leaves to cherish his memories and creative spirit, his wife, Teri D. (Yeates) Leatherbury; one sister, Jana (Leatherbury) Conklin and two nieces, Erin and Emily Conklin of Blissfield, Mich,; a father and mother-in-law, Neval and Norma Yeates of Naperville; a sister-in-law, Holly Yeates, of Naperville; a brother-in-law, Michael Banks, and dear friend Lorraine Michuda of Somonauk; and aunts, uncles and cousins in Minnesota, Michigan, Kansas, New Mexico, Illinois, South Dakota and Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister-in-law, Candace (Yeates) Banks; and his grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Visitation will take place from 3 to 8 p.m., Monday, May 17, at the Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove.
A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 18, at the Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove.
Interment will take place at the Naperville cemetery in Naperville.
