Maureen E. Dunham
Maureen E. Dunham, a resident of Barrington Hills for more than 20 years, died Monday, May 24, 2004. She was an active supporter of the area's equestrian community and devoted much of her time to a children's riding organization, the U.S. Pony Clubs.
Born in Indianapolis, she spent the first few years of her life on her grandparents' farm in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where her family had assembled during World War II. Her early years on her grandparents' farm had an enormous impact on her, as gatherings of family and friends were to become an important part of her adult life.
Her father, Persh Doran, returned from the Pacific following the Japanese surrender, and the family moved first to the Whitefish Bay area of Milwaukee and later to Naperville.
She attended Madonna High School in Aurora, where she was a National Merit Scholar. She studied at Ripon College in Wisconsin and graduated from Rosary College in River Forest with a degree in political science and sociology. She later married
James "Skip" Dunham in a private ceremony on the North Shore. He preceded her in death in 1994. They had one daughter, Jillian, of New York City.
Mrs. Dunham was the district commissioner of the Barrington Hills-based Fox River Valley Pony Club for several years, regularly organizing or assisting with the club's fund-raisers and horse shows. Although she was not a rider herself, she admired the organization's charge to use horses as a means to teach life lessons to children. Independent and outspoken, she championed teamwork and good sportsmanship and shared these values with those around her.
She later became a regional supervisor of the U.S. Pony Clubs, overseeing its operations on a broader level. She became more directly involved with education and outreach, encouraging older members in their late teens to expand upon their skills and give back to younger members. She loved having a positive impact on the lives of children, including that of her daughter, who earned the organization's highest rating and represented it in international exchange. Earlier this year, Mrs. Dunham was honored as a "Legend" at the club's national meeting.
A private memorial service is planned.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the James Beard Foundation, 6 W. 18th St., New York, NY 10011. Call (212) 627-1111.
