John W. Loeding
John W. Loeding, 81, of Naperville died Monday, June 28, 2004, after a long illness. He was born Feb. 19, 1923, in Chicago.
A veteran of World War II, he was a chemical engineer and nuclear scientist. He received his C.E. degree from Northwestern University. He worked at Argonne National Laboratory, Nuclear Fuel Services and the Institute of Gas Technology. He retired as executive vice president of IGT (now GTI). He was an avid golfer, with a certified hole in one at Hickory Hills. He loved hiking trips to Glacier, Crater Lake, Machu Picchu, and Chichen Itza, as well as locally at the Morton Arboretum. He was very active culturally, holding season tickets to Lyric Opera of Chicago for more than 30 years, supporting the Chicago Symphony, Art Institute and The Field Museum (where he was a life member). As a master of classical music, he could name pieces of music after a few bars, enjoyed quizzing others on it and loved to critique the vocal performance of the Lyric singers. He was a die-hard Cubs fan.
He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Loeding-Cuellar of Tampa, Fla., and Anne Loeding-Foster of Lisle; and their mother, Rosalie, of Lombard; his sons-in-law, Leland and Kelly; his grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Stephanie and Christina; several nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, William Loeding.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Thornhill Education Center, Founder's Room, Morton Arboretum, 4100 Route 53, Lisle.

Dolores T. 'Dee' Pasternak
Dolores T. "Dee" (Woods) Pasternak, 76, a resident of Naperville since 1957, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at her home. She was born April 1, 1928, in Oak Park.
Dee grew up in Oak Park, was a graduate of Providence St. Mel High School in Chicago and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she began a long and successful career as an artist. She worked as a photographer and darkroom technician for The Naperville Sun and later worked as an advertising manager for a newspaper in the Bolingbrook/Romeoville area before leaving to concentrate on her art.
She was an active member of the La Grange and DuPage art leagues and a founder and past president of the Naperville Art League. An accomplished artist, Dee won over 200 awards for her work, which included drawings, prints, mixed media, oils and watercolors, and was proud of exhibiting her work at prestigious venues such as the Oak Brook Fine Art Fair and the Old Town Fine Arts Show.
She was instrumental in promoting the arts in the Naperville area, helping to launch the Naperville Art League's nationally known Riverwalk Fine Art Fair, now in its 19th year. She participated in the planning for the Cmdr. Dan Shanower/Sept. 11 Memorial and initiated the project to renovate the deteriorating World War I doughboy sculpture that stands in Burlington Square Park. In 2002, she received the Studs Terkel Humanities Award for her service on the board of the Naperville Century Walk, an outdoor public art exhibit in downtown Naperville. Before her death, she was planning to start a campaign to restore the gravesite of Naperville's town founder, Capt. Joseph Naper.
She is survived by three children, Deborah (husband Lawrence) Neuman of Yorkville, Dawn (husband Christian) Larsen of Libertyville and Blair (wife Laura) Pasternak of Yorkville; eight grandchildren, Heather (husband Christopher) Nelson, Lawrence Neuman Jr. and Brendan Neuman, Ryan and Matthew Larsen, and John, Jason and Katie Pasternak; a brother, Donald (wife Gerry) Woods of Anaheim, Calif., a sister, Shirley (husband Raymond) Kloss of Batavia; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Pasternak; her parents, John and Colette Woods; and four siblings, Vincent Woods, Kenneth Woods, John Woods and Colette Podroza.
A private family visitation will be held at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home in Naperville.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. The Rev. Mark Cote will officiate. A reception will follow at the church.
Future inurnment will be at SS Peter and Paul cemetery in Naperville.

Randall Scott Highland
Randall "Randy" Scott Highland, 44, a resident of Warrenville since 1986 and a former resident of Naperville, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. He was born March 7, 1960, in Aurora.
He grew up in Naperville, attended Lincoln Junior High School and was a graduate of Naperville Central High School, class of 1978. He was employed for 23 years by the DuPage County Water Department in Woodridge. He was an avid sports fan.
He is survived by his wife, Linda D. (nee Murray) Highland of Warrenville, whom he married
June 18, 1983; a son, Jason, and a daughter, Ashley, both of Warrenville; his mother, Patricia (nee Cooke) Highland of Naperville; three brothers, Keith and John Highland of Naperville, and Chuck Highland of Aurora; and many brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lester G. Highland.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.
A funeral service will begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the funeral home with the Rev. Ronald Yurcus officiating.
Interment is private.

She is survived by a daughter, Annetta (husband Michael) Muir of Twinsburg; three sons, Howard (wife Lynn) Rockney of Monticello, Ky., Doug (wife Bernadette) Rockney of Naperville and Dennis (wife Sue) Rockney of Chino Valley, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Clara Leach of Michigan, Doris Hustedt, Betty (husband Ralph) Johnson and Joyce Kronstedt, all of Minneapolis; and a brother, Charles (wife Eileen) Kronstedt of Minneapolis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elton Rockney.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army.

Eleanor A. Valstad
Eleanor A. (Schroeder) Valstad, 91, a Naperville resident since 1999 and formerly of Chicago's Edison Park neighborhood, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Westbury Care Center in Lisle. She was born Oct. 29, 1912, in Niles.
She grew up in Niles and attended the Luther Institute Business School (now Luther North High School) in Chicago. She worked as an administrative assistant at DeForrest Training (now the DeVry Institute) in Chicago until her marriage to Miles on July 31, 1949. She was an active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Park Ridge for more than 50 years, serving on the PTA and Guild. She enjoyed gardening, baking, canning food and her summer farm in Antigo, Wis. She also loved sports and played organized basketball and tennis as a young adult.
She is survived by a daughter, Deborah (husband Gary) Valstad-Lund of Naperville; a son, Clyde (wife Dr. Cathy Bartone) Valstad of Mount Prospect; three grandchildren, Daniel and Thomas Lund and Andrew Valstad; many nieces and nephews, including John (wife Karen) Taylor of Bartlett, Steve (wife Donna) Taylor of Bartlett and Bill Taylor of Hoffman Estates; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and two cousins, Elaine (husband Lawrence) Ponton of California and William (wife Alberta) Schroeder of Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Miles Valstad; her parents, Henry and Anna Schroeder; and a brother, Carl Schroeder.
Visitation will take place from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.
Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 1313 N. Mill St., Naperville. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Richard Johnson officiating.
Family and friends will meet for a graveside service at 11 a.m. Friday, July 16, at St. Luke cemetery in Chicago.

William H. McCabe
William H. McCabe, 81, of Clinton, Iowa, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Harmony House in Clinton. He was born March 4, 1923, in Aurora, the son of Benjamin and Grace (Rickert) McCabe.
He married
Joyce Bertness on Aug. 30, 1947, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. He was a 1941 graduate of Naperville High School and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a master's degree from the University of Iowa. He was a veteran of World War II who served in the U.S. Army in North Africa and Italy. He was a teacher and coach in Maquoketa, Iowa, from 1949 until 1955, when he moved to Clinton, Iowa. He taught science at Washington Middle School until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir for more than 30 years. He also loved singing with his guitar and a good game of golf or tennis. As his health declined in recent years, he was cared for by the nursing staff at Harmony House.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; three sons, Ronald (wife Deborah) McCabe of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Kelly (wife Theresa) McCabe of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Bruce (wife Kathy) McCabe of Minneapolis; three grandsons, Daniel (wife Annie) McCabe and Michael McCabe of Minneapolis and Jayme Barbosa of Flagstaff; three brothers, Robert (wife Virginia) McCabe of Naperville, Ben (wife Roxanne) McCabe of Mill Village, Nova Scotia, and Jack (wife Beth) McCabe of Fort Dodge, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Katherine McCabe of Aurora and Grace McCabe of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 12 nephews and five nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Donald and Keith McCabe.
A funeral service took place Tuesday, July 20, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clinton, Iowa, with the Rev. Matthew Martens officiating. Burial was at Springdale cemetery.
Visitation was held Monday, July 19, at Clinton Chapel of Snell-Zoring-Dennis A. Lemke Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Robert E. Farnham
Robert Erwin Farnham, 81, of Naperville died Friday, July 23, 2004, after a short illness. He was born June 16, 1923. He was surrounded by loving family at the time of his death, including his wife, daughters and sons-in-law, and many of his grandchildren.
He was a man of faith. His parents were missionaries in China for 25 years, and Bob spent about 14 years there. He acquired Christian beliefs early and made them his own. His beliefs translated into action, serving on the boards of Highland Hills Bible Church in Lombard, Northern Grace Youth Camp in Wisconsin and Grace Bible College in Grand Rapids, Mich.
After graduation from North Central College in Naperville, he worked for Armour Research Foundation, forerunner of IIT. He worked for the Navy during World War II, testing echo techniques for ways to detect enemy subs at Solomons, Md. He secured several patents as he worked for his employer, Barber-Greene, a premier road-building company. Bob's civic duty included 16 years on the school board, involving many evenings helping with the planning of the new Waubonsie Valley High School. Division of assets with the Naperville 203 district was negotiated skillfully in an amicable arrangement, unheard of before in school circles.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen (King) Farnham; five children, Elizabeth "Betsy" (husband Walter) Keller of Moline, Nancy (husband Frank) Pawlowski of Amherst, N.H., Helen "Robyn" (husband Brian) Cain of Zion, Karin "Kerry" (husband Augustus) Powell of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Marjorie "Marjie" (husband Bill) Berens of Massillon, Ohio; two brothers, David (wife Marcile) Farnham of Missoula, Mont., and Donald (wife Lennice) Farnham of Hillsboro, Ore.; and a sister, Helen (husband Cecil) Findley of Madison, Wis.
He was a loving, devoted grandfather to 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Mildred Farnham; and stepmother, Zula Farnham.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 29, and an outdoor service will be held at 10:30 a.m., at Wheatland cemetery, north of Plainfield at 104th Street near Naperville Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the building fund of Three Rivers Church in Plainfield, where Dr. Clement Walchshauser is pastor.
