Mildred L. Palmer
Mildred L. (Lev) Palmer, 91, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at her home in Naperville. She was born in Chicago on May 2, 1913.
A homemaker, Mrs. Palmer had been a resident of Naperville for the past 20 years, having previously lived in Hickory Hills and Arkansas. She was a member of Wheatland-Salem United Methodist Church in Naperville, where she also belonged to the Mail Ladies. She was an avid reader who enjoyed bird watching, gardening and cooking.
She is survived by four sons, Charles A. (wife Deborah) of Eugene, Ore., Roy N. (wife Janice) of Tinley Park, John F. (wife Terri) of Naperville and Richard L. (wife Marti) Palmer of Naperville; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Vancura of Green Valley, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Palmer; her parents, Charles and Blanche M. (Meijer) Lev; a brother, Alvin Lev; and a brother-in-law, Elmer Vancura.
A funeral service will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Wheatland-Salem United Methodist Church, 1852 95th St., Naperville.
Interment will be at Chapel Hill Gardens West cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at the Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 24021 W. Royal Worlington Drive (Route 59), Naperville, and from 11 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the church.
Irene E. (Mika) Murphy
Irene E. (Mika) Murphy, 77, of Calumet City went home to be with her Heavenly Father, ushered into His holy presence by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on the Lord's Day, Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, to hear "Well done, thou good and faithful servant; enter now into thy rest."
Irene is survived by her son, Daniel John Murphy; a daughter, Maureen (Murphy) Harris; a son-in-law, Howard Chris Harris; and light of her life, granddaughter Maria Irene Harris.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, with a celebration service of her home-going at 7:30 p.m., at Lansing Bible Church, 2200 183rd St., Lansing, IL 60438, (708) 474-0455. The Rev. Gordon Broadbent will officiate.

Robert J. Raymond
Robert J. Raymond, 91, of Naperville and Columbus, Miss., died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. He was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Chicago.
He was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and had been a resident of Naperville since 1941. The owner and operator of Raymond Lumber Co., once on Washington Street, he was employed as a sales representative by Celotex prior to opening his own lumberyard. He served a 28-year tenure on the DuPage County Board, where he was instrumental in adding thousands of acres to forest preserves in DuPage County. In 1997, Raymond Drive was named to honor his work with the DuPage County Highway Department.
He was known for his philanthropy, especially as the founding father of the Naperville United Way in 1951. He was the oldest member of the Naperville Noon Rotary. His love of horses drove him to be a charter member of the Naperville Saddle Club. He was a graduate of Leo High School in Chicago and St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mae (Roche) of Naperville; five children, Dolores (Michael) Marusha of South Carolina, Marilynn (Joseph) Vannucci of Connecticut, Barbara (Thomas) Jansz of Elizabeth, James Raymond of Naperville and Robert Raymond Jr. of Mississippi; six grandchildren, Nancy Creel, Sue Bentlage, Mary Pat Martin, Katie and Molly Vannucci and James Raymond Jr.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 24, at SS Peter and Paul Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.
Interment will be at SS Peter and Paul cemetery in Naperville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to SS Peter and Paul School Development Fund or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mildred Cresto, 74, of Oak Lawn died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at the Alden Nursing Center in Naperville. She was born July 1, 1930, in Chicago.
She was very involved with the Moose organization in Bull Head City, Ariz., and held the position of Junior Regent Loyal Order of the Moose Academy of Friendship.
She is survived by her sons, John (wife Mary) Cresto of Naperville and David (wife Debbie) Cresto of Schaumburg; a stepdaughter, LaVonne (husband Edward) Meagher of Naperville; seven grandchildren; her mother, Mildred (Gora) Paruszkiewicz of Naperville; and four sisters, Marge (husband Walter) Sankowski of Oak Lawn, Patricia (husband Frank) Konieczka of Bull Head City, Ruth Ann (husband Bill) Murray of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Kathryn Jagelski of Goshen, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Cresto; her father, Walter Paruszkiewicz; a sister, Elizabeth Cap; and a brother, Robert Paruszkiewicz.
A funeral service will be held at noon Friday, Nov. 19, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 24021 W. Royal Worlington Drive, at Route 59, Naperville.
Interment will be private.

Rosella Chmelir
Rosella Chmelir, 90, of Naperville died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at her home. She was born July 28, 1914, in Hanover, Kan.
She is survived by her five children, David (wife Dorothy) Chemler of River Forest, Gary Chmelir of Austin, Texas, Robert Chmelir of Yorkville, Elizabeth (husband Lawrence) Houlihan of Des Plaines and Paul (wife Susan) Chemler of Naperville; her six grandchildren, Dr. Sherry Chemler, Catherine Chemler, Joseph Chemler, Kevin Houlihan and Thomas and Laura Chemler; and her sister, Josephine Hamouz of Phoenix.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Chmelir; her parents, Karel and Josephine Lorenz; and a granddaughter, Cynthia Joan Chemler.
Rosella has been a resident of Naperville since 1954 and a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Mrs. Chmelir served on the Alter and Rosary Society and Prayer Network at SS Peter and Paul Church. Rosella volunteered as the picture lady at SS Peter and Paul School, which was a program designed to enhance art appreciation among students. She retired in 1982 from Mercy Center in Aurora after serving as a recreational therapist for 13 years. Mrs. Chmelir attended Benedictine College (formerly St. Scholastica) in Kansas. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed collecting and restoring antiques.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.

Herbert J. 'Herbie' Matter Jr.
Herbert J. "Herbie" Matter Jr., age 81, a lifelong resident of Naperville, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Naperville. He was born Nov. 28, 1922, in Aurora.
Mr. Matter graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in liberal arts. While attending the university, he competed in track events, achieving first place in the 1940 U.S. National Decathlon and fifth place in the 1946 U.S. National Decathlon. In 1943, during a Big Ten Track meet at Dyche Stadium on the Northwestern campus, his coach entered him in six events, of which he placed in five. He was also a Big Ten high jumper, pole vaulter (which in his time was with a bamboo pole) and broad jumper. In 1947, at the Chicago Daily News Relays, Mr. Matter tied for second place with Bob Richards in pole vault. Mr. Matter holds the world record with the height of 15 feet, 8 1/2 inches in pole vaulting with a bamboo pole, which will never be broken.
He was campus golf champion in 1943, as was his father in 1910. While serving his country in the Army during World War II, he played basketball and won several tournaments. He was a substitute player for the championship basketball team "Whiz Kids" and also American Sweet Hearts.
Mr. Matter became a real estate agent and joined the Matter Real Estate Agency on Ogden Avenue, which his father established in 1936, but was later closed in the late 1950s, when he decided to retire from the real estate business.
He was a collector of old golf clubs, golf balls and other golf paraphernalia. As a golfer, he won the Naperville Country Club Championship more than once and played the qualifying round for the 1949 U.S. Open at Medinah Country Club, but unfortunately did not make the cut but was excited just to have had the opportunity.
Mr. Matter was a writer who penned the letters to "Dear Hal" for The Naperville Sun between 1978 and 1996. He was a singer, too, and was a member of the "Cypress Singers," who performed at the Cypress Restaurant in Hinsdale in the mid-1980s. Mr. Matter was a great collector and was proud of the display of his memorabilia at the DuPage County Historical Museum in Wheaton in July of 1985. His collections included slot machines, rifles, silver dollars, metal-bladed ink erasers, cast iron horseweights, etc.
He is survived by two sons, Richard T. of Seattle and Herbert III (wife Nancy O.) of Montana; and by his former wife, Olene.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert John Sr. and Laura (Nichols) Matter; his maternal grandparents, Prof. J.L. and Laura (Simpson) Nichols; and his paternal grandparents.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville.
Interment will be private.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at the funeral home.

Gertrude 'Trudy' Davis
Gertrude "Trudy" Davis, of Naperville passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at the age of 66.
She is survived by her children, Linda (husband Warren) Mohar, Mark Davis and Beth (husband Pat) Strocchia; five grandchildren, Justin, Christopher, Kelsey, Connor and Pat; a brother, Carl (wife Audrey) Fischer; and a sister, Lucy Fischer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carol and Gertrude (nee Reinhardt) Fisher.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Road, Joliet. Visitation will take place from 3 p.m. until the time of service.
Scarlett M. Goode
Scarlett M. Goode, 56, of Madison, Ind., and formerly of Naperville, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison. A native of Madison, she was born Nov. 3, 1948, to the late Jay and Blanche Cline.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Carol Goode of Hampton, Ga., who cared for her; a niece; two nephews; and a goddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Goode.
Interment will be at Cedar Hill cemetery in Corydon, Ind.

Lillian (Wrobleski) Special, 90, of Plainfield and formerly of West Elsdon, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born Feb. 2, 1914, in Chicago.
She had been a Plainfield resident since 2000 and was a longtime resident of Chicago. She was a member of St. Gall and St. Turibius Catholic churches in Chicago.
She is survived by three sons, Leon Special of Plainfield, Patrick (wife Melanie) Special of Naperville and Richard (wife Mary) Special of Homer Glen; seven grandchildren, Kim (husband Dean) Schmidt, Jodi (husband Michael) Gillis, Michelle Special, Kristina (husband Herb) Dolowy and Richard, Staci and Scott Special; four great-grandchildren, Katie, Mikaila, Paige and Kaitlyn; and a daughter-in-law, Candi Special of Tinley Park.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Special; and a son, Gregory Special.
Visitation will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, at SS Peter and Paul Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.

Thomas R. Kallstedt
Thomas R. Kallstedt, 70, of Sandwich passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich. He was born April 16, 1934, to the late Clarence and Marguerite Kallstedt in Aurora.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Kallstedt of Sandwich; his darling daughters, Leanne Marie (husband Nicholas) Crowley and Audrey Lynn (husband Jeffrey) Olson, all of Oswego; his precious grandchild, Michael Anthony Olson of Oswego; and his sister, Ruth Hilgen of Aurora.
Mass will be celebrated with the Rev. Jack Heraty at St. Pauls Catholic Church in Sandwich at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, with interment to follow at Queen of Angels Catholic cemetery in Sandwich.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, with a wake service at 6:30 p.m., at the Beverage Family Funeral Home, 104 Terry St., Sandwich.
Frederick R. Pentzien
Frederick R. Pentzien, 83, a longtime resident of Naperville, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. He was born May 31, 1921, in Manitowoc, Wis.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He was the former owner and president of Automated Equipment Corp., former manager of research and development for Kroehler MFG Co. and former personal assistant to Kenneth Kroehler of Kroehler Furniture. He was a former alderman on the founding board for Country Club Hills, was a former Planning Commission member and initiated community development for Country Club Hills, and was a founding Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America in Country Club Hills.
Beloved husband of Florence (Groezinger) Pentzien; loving father of Denise (husband Richard) Woytowych and Dwight (wife Cindy) Pentzien; proud grandfather of eight; great-grandfather of three.
