Virginia M. Wehrli
Virginia M. Wehrli, 70, of Naperville, passed away quietly at home in her sleep on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004. She was born Feb. 16, 1934, and was raised in Aurora.
She was a 1951 graduate of Madonna Catholic High School. Virginia enjoyed working for several years for the Social Security Administration as an executive secretary. In 1955, she met and married
John "Harp" Wehrli and spent the remainder of her life in Naperville. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and singing with her friends. She loved to read and, in her more active days, was a fine bowler. As a lifelong sufferer of juvenile diabetes, she endured many health complications over 60 years of ill health. She persevered with a strong will, a positive attitude and always kept a smile on her face. Before health issues diminished her eyesight, she was a fine piano player and also enjoyed doing calligraphy.
She was a member of the St. Irene Catholic Church in Warrenville for 30 years and gave of her time to sing with friends at many of the area nursing homes. In addition, she was a founding member of the Spotted Pony Society and enjoyed many years of tepee camping and promoting the group's purpose of creating a better understanding of the American Indian way of life.
She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, John "Harp" Wehrli of Naperville; her five sons, Steve (wife Pat) Wehrli of Naperville, Dan Wehrli of Naperville, John (wife Patty) Wehrli of Sandwich, Tim Wehrli and Pete Wehrli, both of Naperville; and a daughter, Lisa (husband Jeff) Wehrli-Guenther of Naperville; and 10 grandchildren, Adam, Andrew, Lindsey, Ryan, Jason, Mitch and Chad Wehrli, Katie Lorge and Joshua and Jacob Guenther. She is also survived by her brother, Leon (wife Mary) Backes of Big Rock and over 60 nieces and nephews, from both the Backes and Wehrli families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Alice (Huber) Backes; and her sister-in-law, Alice (Steel) Backes.
A funeral service will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville, and proceed to a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Irene Catholic Church, 28W421 Warrenville Road, Warrenville.
Interment will follow at SS Peter and Paul cemetery in Naperville.
Visitation will take place from 2 until 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at the funeral home.

Dolores T. 'Laurie' Bellendir
Dolores T. "Laurie" (Irmen) Bellendir, 89, of Naperville died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at the home of her nephew in Naperville. She was born Sept. 4, 1915, in Chicago.
A homemaker most of her life, she had worked as a secretary for St. Elizabeth Hospital in Chicago.
She is survived by three sisters, Rita Irmen and Mercedes Bellendir, both of Naperville, and Dorothy Gonzalez of Skokie; a brother, William (wife Jay) Irmen of Mesa, Ariz.; a nephew, Larry (wife Asela) Bellendir of Naperville; and many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas; her parents; and several brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 4, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 24021 W. Royal Worlington Drive, Naperville.
Interment will be private.
Visitation will take place from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday.
Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
Steven J. Corbi
Steven J. Corbi, 43, of Naperville died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at his home. He was born Nov. 24, 1961, in Melrose Park.
He was a Naperville resident for the past 13 years and had been employed at Gerald Oldsmobile/Subaru as a service manager. He had previously worked as an adjuster for AIG Insurance in Lombard. In his spare time, he enjoyed restoring old airplanes and was a member of the Experimental Aviation Association at the Aurora airport in Sugar Grove. He had been a member of Lorimer Baptist Church in Dolton.
He is survived by his daughter, Katrina Corbi of Chicago; his son, Anthony (Christina) of Sandwich; two grandchildren, MacKenzie George and Lydia Corbi; a sister, Barbara (Thomas) Cook of Fairview, Texas; a brother, Thomas (Sue) Corbi of Sherman, Conn.; three nephews, Matthew James Cook and Daniel and Andrew Corbi; his special friend, Francine Stovall of Steger; and his former wife, Cathy Corbi of Aurora.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony T. and Nadine (Krull) Corbi.
Visitation will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 24021 W. Royal Worlington Drive, Naperville. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the funeral home.
Interment will be private.

Sgt. David Mitchell 'Dave' Caruso
Sgt. David Mitchell "Dave" Caruso, 25, a lifelong resident of Naperville, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, in Fallujah, Iraq. He was born Oct. 25, 1979, in Winfield.
David grew up in Naperville, attended Longwood Elementary and Hill Middle School and was a 1998 graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School, where he was an honor roll student and a member of the football team. David enlisted in the Marine Corps during his senior year in high school and later went on to graduate from the Marine Recon. School, Army Ranger School, Army Jump School and Army Freefall School. He was deployed to Iraq in August 2004. David was active in Boy Scouts Troop 505 and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1996. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Naperville and enjoyed weightlifting and traveling the world.
He is survived by his parents, Joseph Jr. and Gloria Jean (Zoladz) Caruso of Naperville; a brother, Michael (wife Tina) Caruso of Palos Heights; his maternal grandmother, Genevieve Zoladz of Naperville; aunts and uncles, Joyce (husband Alan) Whipple of Schaumburg and Gus (wife Stephanie) Caruso of Morton Grove; and three cousins, Daniel and Emily Whipple and Kristen Caruso.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen P. Caruso; his maternal grandfather, Mitchell Zoladz; his paternal grandparents, Joe and Edythe Caruso; and an uncle, Cmdr. Sam (wife Min) Caruso.
Visitation will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the church with the Rev. Joel Fortier officiating.
Interment will be at Assumption cemetery in Wheaton.

James E. Gutshall
James E. Gutshall, 64, of Bolingbrook died Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. He was born Oct. 18, 1940, in Rockford and had lived in Bolingbrook for the past 32 years.
He attended the University of Illinois and joined the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity on the Illinois campus. He graduated in 1964 from Rockford College with a B.S. in economics and business administration. Mr. Gutshall retired in 1995 after 30 years with Sears, working in their various Chicago-area offices and retiring from the Hoffman Estates office, where he was a logistics manager. He was a very active member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Naperville; as well as a member of the Naperville Tennis Club and a ranger at Tamarack Golf Course. He was an amateur photographer, loved games, golf, tennis cards, genealogy, and was a former Scout leader and Little League coach.
Mr. Gutshall was a U.S. Army Reserve veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Pam (Gahlbeck) Gutshall of Bolingbrook; three sons, Bradley of Aurora, Andrew of Eau Claire, Wis., and Chad of Bolingbrook; a sister, Shirley Land of Cincinnati; and an aunt, Jane Beckstrom of Rockford.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Bessie (Brick) Gutshall.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 815 S. Washington St., Naperville.
Interment will be private.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service Thursday, Nov. 18, at the church.

Leo H. Barkei
Lifelong Naperville resident Leo Herman Barkei passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, in the home of his son, Ted (wife Kelley) Barkei.
The Barkei family settled in the community of Naperville in 1853, when it was small and rural. Several of the houses he lived in as a child are still standing. The Barkei name is recalled in a number of farms in the area, as well as streets and a real estate development. Leo was a well-liked, although quiet, man. He had a passion for automobiles and spent much of his later years restoring antique autos to pristine condition with his son, Ted, who shares that passion.
Leo was a graduate of SS Peter and Paul School and Naperville High School, class of 1933. He and Virginia married
July 4, 1938. Before World War II, Leo worked at Cromer Motors in Naperville. During the war he worked in the Buick Motors defense plant in Melrose Park, and after, at Brummel Motors and Colonial Motors in Naperville and Borg Pontiac in Downers Grove.
During the '30s and '40s, he was a member of the Naperville Municipal Band, playing the saxophone, which he loved. He made sure that all of his four children also learned to play the sax. He was a member of Community United Methodist Church, formerly First Evangelical United Brethren Church.
Survivors include his children, Ted (wife Kelley) Barkei, Sharon E. Campbell of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Adell (husband Jack) Sauper of Naperville and Carolyne (husband Rick) Barkei-Lawhorn of Peachtree City, Ga. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, Gregory Barkei, Elise Campbell-Baker (husband Bruce), Bryan Campbell (wife Keri), Dr. Alex and Bradley Sauper, Capt. Erik, Karl, Ingrid, Gretchen, Yvette and Brigitte Lawhorn; four great-grandchildren, Aiden, Taryn, Devon and Teagan Campbell. There are also many cousins, nephews and nieces, most of which are also long-known names in Naperville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; a sister, Laura Barkei; brother, George; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Barkei.
A memorial visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.
A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Babler officiating.
His cremains will be interred in the Naperville cemetery.
A luncheon will follow.

Walter Larkin McHugh
Walter Larkin McHugh, 88, of Chicago died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004. He was born Jan. 23, 1916.
He was a World War II veteran, a specialist in the SeaBee's. He was a retired lifelong employee of Illinois Bell, after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Illinois Bell Pioneers and the Toastmasters of Chicago. He was an adviser consultant for telecommunications in The Philippines.
He is survived by his loving children, Joseph (wife Judy) and Mary Anne (husband William) Halamicek; his cherished grandchildren, Jason, Christopher, Michael and Stephen; five siblings, Marie (husband Robert) Rasmussen, Frank, James, Virginia Kemp and Edmund McHugh; a godson, William J. Kemp Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Madonna C. (Quinn) McHugh; three sisters-in-law, Ethel, Mary and Vera; and a brother-in-law, William Kemp.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at Andrew J. McGann and Son Funeral Home, 10727 S. Pulaski Road, Chicago.
A funeral service will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, from the funeral home and proceed to St. Julie Billiart Church for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial.
Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre cemetery in Worth.

Dorothy A. 'Dolly' Buffardi
Dorothy A. "Dolly" (Parillo) Buffardi, 89, a longtime resident of River Forest and Oak Brook, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born Feb. 19, 1915, in Chicago.
She is survived by four children, James (wife Lynne), Louis (wife Claire), Carmellyn Panzarella and Donna (husband Thomas) Hornsby; 10 grandchildren, Louis, Stephen, Janet, Michael, Carmalyn, Elizabeth, Donna, Alicia, Christopher, Tricia and Heather; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a beloved partner of Ferrara Pan Candy Co. of Forest Park, founded in 1908 by the members of Ferrara, Buffardi and Pagano families. She was also a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis J.
Friends will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, for a Mass of Christian burial, at Ascension Catholic Church, 1S314 Summit, Oakbrook Terrace.
Entombment will be at Queen of Heaven cemetery in Hillside.
Visitation took place Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Elliston Funeral Home in Hinsdale.

Mildred P. Cich

Jack A. Keating
Jack A. Keating, 84, a 53-year resident of Wheaton, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at Wyndemere Retirement Community. He was born May 5, 1920, in Chicago.
He was a graduate of Oak Park-River Forest High School and attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison until enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1944. He served as a first lieutenant in the 8th Air Force, 381st Bomb Group H, from June 1944 to February 1945. He flew 35 missions in the European theater, including missions over Germany and France, as a bombardier with the 535th Squadron. He was awarded many medals and honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.
After his service, he attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He began his career as an art director at Sigman Advertising Agency. He later worked at Feldcamp Malloy and became a partner at Martin Trlak Agency for 10 years. He joined UVG&N, where he continued to serve his major client, Keebler Co., until he retired at 81. He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton, where he served as a trustee, and he later attended Naperville Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Norma; three sons, Scott (wife Nancy) of Snowmass, Colo., Todd (wife Tammy) of Naperville and Kevin (wife Suzanne) of Aurora; six grandchildren, Kyle, Amanda, Greg, Lauren, Leah and Jackson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Erma Keating; and a brother, Arthur J. Keating Jr.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Anderson Auditorium at Wyndemere Retirement Community, 200 Wyndemere Circle, Wheaton.
A private interment will be at Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood.
