George W. Arras
George W. Arras, 83, a Glen Ellyn resident since 1986, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. He was born Jan. 12, 1920, in New York City.
He retired in 1984 after 25 years as a customer service representative with Bell and Howell of Chicago. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was a member of the 410th Bomb Squadron. He was a member of the Bell and Howell Pioneer Club and was a member of and served as an usher at Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Hillside. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by three children, Mary Ellen (husband Bruce) Kummer of Glen Ellyn, Paul (wife Adelle) Arras of Naperville and Celene Arras of Glen Ellyn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty T. Arras; a sister, Corrine; and a brother, Robert.
Visitation will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn.
A funeral service will begin 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Our Lady of Lebanon Church, 425 N. Hillside Ave., Hillside. The Rev. Victor Kayrouz will officiate.
Burial will take place at Assumption cemetery in Wheaton.
Ann M. Carpenter
Ann M. (Hartman) Carpenter, 96, of Aurora and a former resident of Ocala, Fla., and Lisle, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Elmwood Nursing Center in Aurora. She was born July 31, 1906, in Pittsburgh.
She lived in many different places throughout her life because of her husband's military career. She was a resident of Ocala for many years and also resided at the Devonshire in Lisle before moving to Elmwood Nursing Center.
She is survived by a daughter, Marie T. (husband William J.) Croce of Naperville; a son, Richard L. (wife Hitomi) Carpenter of Tokyo; five grandchildren, Sonya, Michael (wife Cindy), Robert, Susan (husband Charles) and Jeannette; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. Carpenter; her parents, Henry and Therese Hartman; and a brother, Harry Hartman.
Visitation will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, followed by an 11:30 a.m. memorial Mass at St. Raphael Church, 1215 Modaff Road, Naperville. The Rev. Ted Weitzel will officiate.
Inurnment will be at Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va.
Loya N. Hughes
Loya Nell (Limbaugh) Hughes, 86, a resident of Villa Park since 1955, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Elmhurst Hospital. She was born on a farm near Sedgewickville, Mo., on Aug. 7, 1916.
She graduated from Southeast Missouri State Teachers College at Cape Cirardeau and began her teaching career in Cooter, Mo. She married
Carl Hughes on May 20, 1939. They moved to Villa Park in 1955, and she continued her teaching career at Jefferson School in Elmhurst, where she taught third grade for 23 years, retiring in 1978.
Her primary interests were her family, especially her grandchildren; a wide network of friends; bridge; golf; and travel. She was a music lover and attended the symphony, the opera and the theater. She was an avid reader, particularly enjoying history, biography and politics. She loved gardening, and her summer back yard was colorful. For many years, she recorded books for the blind and also delivered Meals on Wheels. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst, its Chancel Choir, the Elmhurst Women's Club of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter JU, and the Elmhurst Symphony Auxiliary.
At the age of 79, she took all five of her grandchildren on a 17-day African safari. At 80, she memorized and performed a piano recital of works of Chopin for her family because she wanted to do something for her 80th birthday that she had never done before. Until the last year of her life, she played golf, walking rather than riding because he liked the exercise. At 85, she purchased a computer and learned to use it so she could e-mail her grandchildren and other family members and friends.
She is survived by a son, James (wife Carole) Hughes of Nanuet, N.Y.; a daughter, Catherine (husband Michael) Allen of Naperville; two sisters, Helen (husband Robert) Gillespie of Kirkwood, Mo., and Anne Padavic of Aurora; five grandchildren, Bryan Hughes of Jersey City, N.J., Adam Hughes of Washington, D.C., Eric Hughes of East Meadow, N.Y., Kimberly Allen of Burbank, Calif., and Jeffrey Allen of Naperville; nieces; nephews; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Carl, and a brother, Alfred Limbaugh.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst, 232 S. York Road, Elmhurst.

John T. Batka
John T. Batka, 92, a Naperville resident since 1995 and a former resident of Chicago, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Community Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Naperville. He was born Aug. 4, 1910, in Chicago.
He lived on Chicago's South Side for the majority of his life. He was employed for 34 years for Commonwealth Edison at Fisk Station in Chicago, retiring in 1975. He was a former member of Tabor Lutheran Church in Chicago, and he enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by two daughters, Betty McGill of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Janet (husband Ronald) Kamp of Naperville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Julie Szumigaski of Westmont; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Batka, in 1997; his parents, Stefan and Alzbetha Batka; and four siblings, Steven, William and George Batka and Betty Dybinski.
A memorial service will take place at a later date.
Interment will be private.

Mary J. (Egan) Newkirk
Mary J. (Egan) Newkirk, 71, a Naperville resident since 1977 and a former resident of Hillside from 1962 to 1977, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at her home. She was born July 29, 1931, in Chicago.
She grew up in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, where she was a member of St. Angela's parish. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst. A homemaker, she was also a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Naperville.
She is survived by her husband, William A. Newkirk of Naperville, whom she married
May 28, 1955; four children, Terrence (wife Lynn) Newkirk of Naperville, James (wife Beth) Newkirk of Buffalo Grove, Julie (husband Tom) Chivari of Hinckley and Edward (wife Carrie) Newkirk of Salt Lake City; seven grandchildren, Robert, Daniel, Genevieve, Erin, Grant, Brady and Maria; four siblings, William (wife Mary) Egan of Mundelein, Marjorie (husband Marvin) Fleege of Lombard, Thomas Patrick (wife Patricia) Egan of Lombard and John (wife Patricia) Egan of Lombard; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Newkirk; her parents, Frank and Anne Egan; and a sister, Annette Weatherwax.

Barbara J. Roberts, 67, a lifelong resident of Naperville, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Community Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Naperville. She was born Feb. 14, 1935, in Chicago.
She is survived by two daughters, Robin (husband Roger) Halverson of Naperville and Julie (husband Andy) Latham of Naperville; six grandchildren, Mike Klotka, Jim Gross, Stacey Carli, Angie Halverson and Anthony and Angelia Latham; five great-grandchildren; her mother, Una Born of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Ann (husband Steve) Barnes of Palm Beach Gardens and Sandy (husband Jeffery) Niemeyer of Acworth, Ga.; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Haggart of La Jolla, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Roberts; a son, John W. Roberts Jr.; her father, Leslie Haggart; and a brother, Gale Haggart.

Elizabeth Bauer
Elizabeth "Liz" (Erdei) Bauer, 92, a former resident of Naperville, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Albuquerque, N.M. She was born April 10, 1910, in Johnstown, Pa.
She attended school in Aurora and married
Norman Bauer in 1930 at St. Michael's Church in Aurora. She worked at Kroehler Manufacturing Co. most of her adult life, first in Naperville and later in Engelwood, Calif., before retiring in 1970 to Albuquerque.
She is survived by her husband; two sisters, Helen Pastori of Tucson, Ariz., and Viola Adams of Kansas City, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Helen Urbane of Albuquerque, James Bauer of Pace, Fla., Gene Bauer of Carrollton, Texas, and Evelyn Bauer Stearns of Naperville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Florence Erdei; three brothers, George, Victor and Jay; and two sisters, Mary Illet and Florence Trense.
A memorial service took place Saturday, Jan. 18, at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Albuquerque.
Interment was private.

Alfred S. Margevich
Alfred S. Margevich, 91, a resident at Meadowbrook Manor in Naperville since 1999 and a former resident of Chicago, Idaville, Ind., and Westmont, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Meadowbrook Manor. He was born July 8, 1911, in Bellwood.
He grew up in Melrose Park and married
Antoinette Grabowski in 1942. He was employed by Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Chicago for more than 20 years as a sales manager. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of the Elks. He was an avid gardener and hunter.
He is survived by a son, Steven A. (wife Kathleen) Margevich of Hoopeston; two daughters, Alice (husband Tony) Dockus of Aurora, Ohio, and Arlene (husband Michael) Hogan of Naperville; four grandchildren, Emily and Anna Margevich, Karyn (husband Chris) Pokorney and Tony Dockus; a godchild, Mary Heuer; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Antoinette (Grabowski) Margevich; a son, Alfred Adam Margevich; four siblings; and his parents.

Lisa Marie Hage, 49, of Bolingbrook died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Glen Oaks Hospital in Glendale Heights. She was born Dec. 17, 1953, in Chicago.
She was an electronic technician.
She is survived by her parents, Farris, Dolores and Mickey Hage; three siblings, James (wife Gina) Hage, Gigi (husband John) Michaels and Joseph Hage; a nephew, Jason; and a niece, Shanon.

Leo L. Gedvilas
Leo Leonard Gedvilas, 79, a Naperville resident since 1952, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at HCR ManorCare Health Services in Naperville. He was born Sept. 7, 1923, in Spring Valley.
He grew up in Spring Valley and was a graduate of Hall High School. He received bachelor's and master's degrees in physical education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was a letter winner in basketball and baseball. He was employed for 39 years by the University of Illinois at Navy Pier, Chicago (now the University of Illinois at Chicago), beginning as a physical-education instructor and later retiring as assistant dean of the physical-education department in 1987. He was the university's first basketball coach, from 1947 to 1958. With his record of 102 wins and 80 losses, he still holds the highest winning percentage (.560) of any UIC basketball coach. He served as membership chairman for the State Universities Annuitants' Association, University of Illinois at Chicago Chapter, from 1990 to 1991. He was an active member of SS Peter and Paul Church in Naperville, teaching religious education and participating on the bingo committee and as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking, fixing things and nature. He also enjoyed spending time with his 18 grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene A. (Pakula) Gedvilas of Naperville, whom he married
Sept. 2, 1950; seven children, Tom Gedvilas of Michigan, Larry (wife Sheila) Gedvilas of Wheaton, Joe (wife Sue) Gedvilas of Lisle, John (wife Lynn) Gedvilas of Colorado, Bob (wife Sue) Gedvilas of Aurora, Mary Ellen (husband Scot) Butz of Geneva and Andy (wife Sharon) Gedvilas of Naperville; 18 grandchildren, Kristina, Lauren, Stephanie, Nick, Will, Lita, Jim, Leigh, Todd, Brett, Christopher, Kathryn, Stacey, Bryan, Tyler, Anthony, Nathan and Sophie; a sister, Louise (husband Joe) Urbanski of Spring Valley; a daughter-in-law, Irene Gedvilas of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Mary (Stanish) Gedvilas, and a brother, Peter Gedvilas.
