Leona L. Anderson
GALVA - Leona L. Anderson, 80, of Galva, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 26, at the Galva Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, the Rev. Robin Faull officiating.
Burial will be in Red Oak Cemetery, rural Cambridge.
Visitation is from 6:30 to 8:30 this evening at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church of Galva, of which she was a member; or Red Oak Cemetery.
She was born Aug. 31, 1919, in Weller Township, Henry County, the daughter of Clarence and Mabel (Hulstrom) Anderson.
Surviving are two sisters, Ludelia Gallagher of Galesburg, and Loraine Peterson of Kewanee; a brother, Clarence (Audrey) Anderson of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and a brother.
She attended schools in Nekoma, and operated a store there for several years.
She then worked at the hotel in Galva, and later did housekeeping in Galva homes.
Shelby A. Mechling
BUDA -- Shelby A. Mechling, 66, of Buda, died at 4:25 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Walnut Manor Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at Bunker Hill Church of God, Buda, the Revs. Fred Criminger and Lauren W. Gerber officiating.
Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the church.
Burial will be in Bunker Hill Cemetery, rural Buda.
Memorials may be made to Bunker Hill Church of God, of which she was a member; the American Cancer Society; or the Buda Rescue Squad.
She was born July 16, 1936 in Buda, the daughter of Richard and Marian (Strait) Marquis.
She married Duane E. Mechling Aug. 5, 1956 in Belvidere.
He preceded her in death July 26, 2000.
Surviving are her mother, of Buda; two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Jacqueline) Hasbrook of Sheffield, and Mrs. Bill (Janis) McDonald of Walnut; seven grandchildren, Kristen, Jason, Taryn and Lauren Hasbrook and Sarah, Melissa and Olivia McDonald; two brothers, Merrill (Cheryl) Marquis of Mendota, and Dick (Pat) Marquis of Princeton; and a sister, Mrs. Melvin (Mary) Forth of Bloomington.
She was also preceded in death by her father; an infant sister, Velma Marquis; and a nephew, Gary Forth.
She was a member of Buda American Legion Auxiliary 261 and the Tri-County Municipal League.
She worked for Kraft Foods in Manlius, Harper-Wyman in Princeton, and Farmers State Bank in Sheffield, and was a homemaker.
She had been village clerk in Buda, for several years.
Henry A. Vereecke
KEWANEE -- Henry A. Vereecke, 88, of Bradford, and formerly of Kewanee, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003 at the Illinois Veterans Home, LaSalle.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, the Rev. Leland L. Legg, Jr. officiating, Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Saturday.
Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery Kewanee, with military rites accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Bradford Rescue Squad or Leet Memorial United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.
He was born in Kewanee, March 17, 1914, the son of Camile and Melanie (DeJager) Vereecke.
He married Margaret Hay.
She preceded him in death in 1976.
He then married Lucille Vandersnick, who also preceded him in death.
He married Naomi Shaner June 17, 1983 in Bradford.
She survives, as do a son, William Vereecke of Pensacola, Fla.; a daughter, Melaine Vereecke of Chicago; five grandchildren, including a granddaughter, April; seven great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Phillip (Sharon) Shaner of Bradford, and Dale (Diana) Shaner of Ft. Collins, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Ron (Sharon) Allen of University Park, Ill., Mrs. Pat (Sandra) Johnston of Wilmington, Del.; 11 step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Art (Margaret) Vereecke of Kewanee.
He was also preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.
He was educated in Kewanee schools, and was an Army Signal Corps veteran of World War II.
He worked for many years for the Rock Island Arsenal, from which he retired.
He was a member of American Legion Post 31 and the Flemish American Club, both in Kewanee.
He raised and raced pigeons in Kewanee
Gary Becker
GENESEO -- Gary D. Becker, 55, of Geneseo, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center West, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Wright Chapel, Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Geneseo.
The Rev. Jeremy Monk will officiate.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wright Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Geneseo Humane Society.
He was born on July 30, 1947, in Moline, the son of Dale and Mary (Parrish) Becker.
He graduated from J.D. Darnall High School, Geneseo, in 1964.
He graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1969 with a degree in electrical engineering.
He owned and operated Becker & Becker Plumbing and Heating in Geneseo, from 1969 until he sold the business in 1990.
He then went to the University of Alabama in Huntsville, graduating in 2001, furthering his education in electrical engineering.
He was a member of Hillwood Baptist Church, Huntsville, and a former member of the Geneseo Lions Club.
He enjoyed boat racing.
He is survived by his mother. Mary Becker, Geneseo; four aunts, Ruth Flynn, Mechanicsville, Iowa, Anna Comer, Marion, Iowa, Flossie Cullen, Grandview, Idaho, and Gladys Lenta, Murphysboro, Tenn.; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Phyllis C. Ohm
KEWANEE -- Phyllis C. Ohm, 79, of Warrenville, Ill., and formerly of Kewanee, died at 7:54 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002 at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.
Cremation rites were accorded.
Graveside inurnment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 5, at Milo Mound Cemetery, rural Bradford.
The Rev. Mike Marcey will officiate.
There is no visitation.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Milo Mound Cemetery Fund.
Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, is in charge of arrangements.
She was born June 9, 1923 in Kewanee, the daughter of Percival and Anna (Swanson) Koch.
She graduated from Kewanee High School in 1941.
She married Frank Ohm, Aug. 10, 1941 in Kahoka, Mo.
He preceded her in death Aug. 15, 1998.
A brother, James Koch, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Penny Ohm of Warrenville, and Mrs. Sue Riordan of Peru; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She had worked at the Galva Creamery.
She enjoyed cooking and collecting recipes.
She was an avid reader, loved animals, life on the farm and the Kewanee Hog Days Parade.
While living in Warrenville, she attended Naperville Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Barry E. Zonkel
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Dr. Barry E. Zonkel, 63, of Bourbonnais, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Riverside Medical Center.
Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais.
Memorials may be made to B.A.R.K. (Because Animals Really Kount).
He was born June 25, 1939, in Kewanee, the son of John and Laurette (Tietz) Zonkel.
He married Sharon Kellam Sept. 22, 1965, at Fort Slocum, New Rochelle, N.Y.
She survives, as do two sons, Brian Zonkel of Bradley and Phillip Zonkel of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Denny (Marilyn) McCullough of Two Rivers, Wis.; his mother, of Kewanee; a niece, Michelle Goode; two nephews, Mike (Nikki) McCullough and Cory McCullough; a great-niece; and two great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He was a 1957 Wethersfield High School graduate, an Army veteran, and a graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois.
He owned and practiced in a small-animal clinic in Bourbonnais, until his retirement in January 2001.
He was an avid Chicago Bulls, Bears and Cubs fan.
