Verda Glafka
WALNUT - Verda Glafka, 88, of Walnut, died Saturday evening, Feb. 24, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee, Fla.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 1, at Garland Funeral Home, Walnut, the Rev. Pearle Lang officiating.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Princeton.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 this evening at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Walnut Fire Department.
She was born Oct. 2, 1912, in Walnut, the daughter of Frank B. and Grace (Brown) May.
She married Herb Sergeant.
He preceded her in death.
She then married Larry Glafka, who also preceded her in death.
Surviving are a son, Donald Sergeant of Ohio; four grandchildren, Terry Vandermoon of Princeton, Tammy Chamberlain of Walnut, Tracy DeWaele of Amboy, and Jim Sergeant of Princeton; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
She was active in various organizations in Briney Breezes, Fla., including the Boat and Fishing Club, the Garden Club and the Hobby Club.
She enjoyed needlepoint, carpenter work, ceramics and flowers.
Clara Kathryn Skaggs
WYANET - Clara Kathryn Skaggs, 80, of Wyanet, died at 10:52 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Perry Memorial Hospital, Princeton.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Grant-Johnson Funeral Home, Wyanet, the Rev. Ken Wilson officiating.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 this evening at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services Friday, at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Wyanet.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to Princeton Bible Church, which she attended.
She was born Jan. 7, 1920, in Taylor County, Kentucky, the daughter of Johnnie J. and Nora L. (Skaggs) Shofner.
She married Albert L. Skaggs, Jr., Aug. 31, 1940, in Columbia, Ky.
He survives, as do a son, Kerry (Teresa) Skaggs of Louisville, Ky.; two daughters, Mrs. David (Nancy) DeWeese and Mrs. Robert (Glenda) Cochrane, both of Mobile, Ala.; 10 grandchildren, Mike Philips, Jill Wilson, Tracey Phillips, Randa Avery, Jamie Bond, Stephen Cochrane, Paul Cochrane, Danielle Skaggs, Leslie Skaggs and Tracii Jones; and three sisters, Emma Hunt of Wyanet, and Minnie Anderson and Exie Trumbo, both of Walnut.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Michael Skaggs; and a great-granddaughter, Angel Johns.
She was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Taylor County.
She was a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a Master's Degree.
She was a first-grade teacher in Sterling.
She was a member of the Illinois Education Association and the National Education Association.
James Britton
PRINCETON -- James A. Britton, Jr., 68, of Princeton, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Colonial Hall Canter in Princeton.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 7, at Norberg Memorial Home, Princeton, with the Rev. Wayne Anderson officiating.
Interment will be in Elm Lawn Memorial Park, Princeton.
Memorials may be made to Moose Lodge 1339, Mooseheart Foundation, American Diabetes Association or to his family.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with a Moose service at 5:45.
He was born March 6, 1935, in Henry, the son of James and Margaret (Allen) Britton.
He was a truck driver for Lilly and 31 Trucking for 30 years, retiring in 2000.
He was a graduate of Basehor, Kan., High School in 1953 and enjoyed golfing and bowling.
He was a member of Princeton Moose Lodge 1339; a charter member, legion, fellowship degree 100+ CLU and past governor.
He also served with the former Princeton Civil Defense, Princeton Ambulance Service for 8 years and as Lion's Club secretary.
Survivors include three children, James Britton of Columbus, Ohio, Susan (Norman) Lucas of Princeton, and Steven (Amanda) Britton of Spring Valley; a stepson, Jason (Nickole) Lafferty of Arlington; seven grandsons; a granddaughter; two step-grandsons; three step-granddaughters; a great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews and a sister, Bonnie (Howard) Doty.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rosemary Jones; and a granddaughter, Krystal Britton.
Judith Ann Spears
TAMPICO -- Judith Ann Spears, 52, of Willow Wood Health Care Center in Rock Falls and formerly of Tampico, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 5, 2003, at the center.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Garland Funeral Home, Tampico, the Rev. Dalmus Meeks officiating.
Burial will be in Tampico Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. until time of services Friday, at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established.
She was born Jan. 21, 1951, in Trenton, Mo., the daughter of William and Rosalie (Hickman) Spears.
Surviving are her parents, of Tampico; two brothers, Bill (Kim) Spears of Pecatonica, and Orville (Linda) Spears of Paris, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Gene (Alice) Dalton of Sterling; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents and a nephew.
She was a 1972 graduate of Rock Falls High School.
She was employed at Borg Warner in Dixon, for 16 years.
She was a member of Harvest Time Bible Church in Rock Falls.
William Lappin
KEWANEE -- William "Bill" Lappin, 60, of Kewanee, died at 7:44 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at his home.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Revs. Chris Haake, Robert Prendergast and Kevin Siscoe officiating.
Visitation will be from noon until the time of services at the church.
Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council.
Memorials may be made to the AWANA Club of Kewanee.
Schueneman and Tumbleson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was born May 23, 1942, in Kewanee, the son of Alphonse and Clarise Coyne Lappin.
He was educated at Visitation Schools and Kewanee High School.
He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
He married Sharon L. Zimmerman May 21, 1982.
She survives, as well as three sons, Michael Robinson of Falls Church, Va., David (Rose) Robinson of Galva, and Joe Fjeld of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Lisa (Mark) Hier of Galva; seven grandchildren, Ashley, Justin, Sarah, Jennifer, Dane, Kayla and Cody; two brothers, Tom (Vicky) Lappin of Kewanee, and John (Lynette) Lappin of South Pasadena Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was self-employed and owned many rental properties in Kewanee.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Kewanee, and the Kewanee VFW.
He enjoyed trucks and equipment and helping the elderly.
