Margaret E. Peterson (nee Sternberger), 84, of Orland Park, died Thursday at Palos Community Hospital.
"She was quite a lady," her son Donald Peterson said. "Everybody who knew her loved her."
A service will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday at Blake-Lamb/Becvar Funeral Home, 11201 S. Harlem Ave., Worth. A mass will be said at 10 a.m. at St. Julie Billiart Church, 7399 W. 159th St., Tinley Park. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Peterson was born July 22, 1916, in Chicago. She was a homemaker.
Family members said Mrs. Peterson was very kind and caring and will be greatly missed.
Donald Peterson said family was important to his mother. After her sister Mary McKeague was killed in a car accident in 1969, Mrs. Peterson adopted her sister's children. Mrs. Peterson raised James, Edward, Martin, Daniel and Peggy as her own. She and her husband, Lawrence, moved to Chicago from Pennsylvania so the five adopted children would be close to other family members.
Mrs. Peterson kept in touch with many childhood friends.
"She was a wonderful mother and friend to many," son Larry Peterson said.
She is survived by five sons, Larry, Robert, Dennis, John and Donald; a sister Mildred; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Lawrence, and by siblings Dottie, Eileen, Mary and Charles.

George C. Van Gerpen, 89, of Flossmoor, died Thursday at South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Faith United Protestant Church, 10 Hemlock St. in Park Forest. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Camargo, Ill.
Mr. Van Gerpen graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in banking and finance. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and played coronet in the university's marching band.
He worked for Harris Trust and Savings Bank in Chicago and for his family-owned Hartsburg State Bank.
Mr. Van Gerpen worked as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation during World War II.
He and his family moved to Park Forest in 1949, and he worked at a department store and Northern Trust Bank, from which he retired in 1975.
He was active in Faith United Protestant Church, Flossmoor Country Club and the Homewood-Flossmoor Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Van Gerpen is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean Dragoo Van Gerpen; daughter Linda Van Gerpen Case of Houston, Texas; and two grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund at Faith United Protestant Church, designated for the elevator replacement fund.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, James; three sons, James, Edward and Daniel; two sisters, Betty Stockley and Helen Rusgis; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty Jane Leonard

Betty Jane Leonard, 72, of Burr Ridge, who devoted many years to helping patrons of Chicago's libraries finding the information they needed and sharing her love of reading, died Friday at University of Chicago Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at St. Isaac Jogues Church, Fourth and Clay, Hinsdale, at 11:30 a.m. Monday.
Burial will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Coglianese Funeral Home, 7508 S. County Line Road, Burr Ridge.
Mrs. Leonard was born Oct. 22, 1928, in Chicago and lived on Chicago's southwest side until 1997. She was married to the late Victor Leonard, who preceded her in death by about three months.
Mrs. Leonard worked as a librarian in several Chicago library branches. While raising her four children, she studied part time and earned her bachelor's degree from National Louis University.
She received her master's degree in library science from Rosary College (now Dominican University) in 1985, at the age of 56, which allowed her to become the head librarian at the McKinley Park Branch of the Chicago Public Libraries. She helped in the design of the new McKinley library building, which replaced a storefront branch.
"Even the architect consulted her. She had her finger in everything," her daughter, Kay Otter said. "She really felt it was her library."
Mrs. Otter described her mother as "spirited, stern and gentle." Mrs. Leonard survived lung cancer in the 1970s, at a time when few people would have defeated it.
Mrs. Leonard shared her love of reading, especially with her grandchildren, who received books every Christmas and Easter.
After retiring from the McKinley Park Library, she worked part time at the Westmont Public Library.
"She was a real sweetheart. She had a lot of different interests," said the current McKinley Park branch manager, Bruce Ziemer, who took the position after Mrs. Leonard retired. "I think she impressed the McKinley Park community by how she would plan a community meeting." He recalled all the Friends of the Library or other meetings would have special snacks and coffee, brought by Mrs. Leonard.
"I think many of the librarians will miss her," Mr. Ziemer said.
Mrs. Leonard was affiliated with St. Bede the Venerable Parish, Chicago, Friends of the Chicago Public Library, Irish-American Heritage Club, and several west suburban book clubs.
Mrs. Leonard is survived by her children, Mary Jane (Michael) Beran, Kathryn (Robert) Otter, Glenn (Mary Anne) and Brian (Sandra); her grandchildren Meghan, Matthew, Robert, Julia, Brian, Michael, Elizabeth and Joseph; her sister Joanie Stichnot and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Rogan.

Mr. Kobe received his chemical engineering degree from University of Dayton and a mechanical engineering degree from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mr. Kobe is survived by a daughter, Sister Joan Kobe; two sons, Francis X. Kobe Jr. and the Rev. Robert S. Kobe; and four grandchildren.

Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Becvar and Son Funeral Home, 5539 W. 127th St., Crestwood.
Mr. Colby was born on April 26, 1931, in Chicago. He was a retired Chicago police officer and served in the Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Colby is survived by his wife, Valerie A.; two daughters, Janet Colby and Linda Sawicki; two sons, David and Bruce Colby; a brother, John Colby; and six grandchildren.

Thomas F. Deegan
Retired English professor
Thomas F. Deegan, 62, of Hinsdale, formerly of Chicago, died Friday at LaGrange Hospital.
A funeral service ill be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103rd St., Oak Lawn.
Burial will be at Mount Olivet in Chicago.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Deegan was born on April 7, 1939, in Chicago. He was a professor of English for 36 years at Saint Xavier University. A life long Chicago resident, he attended the Naval Academy, University of Illinois, University of Chicago and Northwestern University. He developed and was the director for the graduate English program at Saint Xavier. He taught 19th century English literature and film. He was active in the film community in the 1970s at Beverly Film. Mr. Deegan was a member of the Little Stabs of Happiness Cinematheque and "Cinamatheque's" at University of Illinois and Loyola University Chicago. He directed several short films and wrote a weekly movie column for the Southwest Sentinel newspaper. He edited Spinoza's Ethics from a translation by George Eliot and ran Saint Xavier's film society for many years. He traveled several times to England, Ireland and Italy and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Janice. He retired from Saint Xavier in 1998.
Mr. Deegan is survived by his wife of 30 years, Janice; two daughters, Aimee Deegan and Jennifer Smith; a son, Christopher Deegan; a sister, Joan Sudborough; and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to International Myeloma Foundation of Saint Thomas Hospice.

Wayne R. "Duke" Melichar Sr., 80, of Chicago, died Saturday at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park.

Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Mr. Melichar was born on Feb. 3, 1921, in Chicago. He was a retired Chicago police officer.
Mr. Melichar is survived by a son, Wayne R. Melichar Jr.; a sister, Ellen "Audry" Melichar; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Meyers was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Wharton, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Chicago Heights.
She is survived by her husband, Harry; two sons, Chuck of Chicago Heights and Randy of Richton Park; two sisters, Violet Korenek of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Adele Schultz of El Campo, Texas; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mikuszewski was born on April 6, 1921, in Germany. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was a member of St. Julie Billiart Senior Group and loved to travel. Mrs. Mikuszewski also loved her pet poodle.
Mrs. Mikuszewski is survived by her husband, Marion; two daughters, Doris Bugaris and Gina Herrig; a son, George Mikus; and eight grandchildren.
