At the time of her retirement in 1980, she was head of the Department of General Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing.
Some of Mrs. Ellsworth's more memorable positions include her tenure as Director of Nursing Service and of the School of Nursing at the New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston, which is the nursing school from which Linda Richards and Mary Mahony graduated before the turn of the century.

This program ran collaboratively with the American Hospital Association, whose nursing specialist, Marian Fox, served as co-conductor. Together, they conducted workshops in every state except Alaska.
During this phase of her career, Mrs. Ellsworth was also a consultant for the United States Department of State, traveling throughout several LatinAmerican countries and to the Central Treaty Organization countries of Turkey, Iran and Pakistan to consult on thedevelopment of nursing and hospitals in those countries.
