Dr. Eugene T. Leonard III
Dr. Eugene T. Leonard III, 60, Woodstock, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. He was born Nov. 15, 1943, in Chicago, to Dr. Eugene T. and Doris (Bianucci) Leonard II. He married Maryjo Ingrassia Sept. 8, 1962, in Apple River. He graduated from Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien, Wis. He attended the University of Notre Dame for two years then graduated from Rockford College in 1965. He enrolled in dental school at Loyola University in Chicago, graduating in 1965. He earned his dental degree from Loyola University School of Dentistry in 1969. He started several offices throughout the Chicago area. In 1988, he began practicing with his eldest son. Two offices are maintained today by four sons and a daughter. He was also instrumental in establishing a law office for three of his sons in the Chicago area. He was a past member of the American Dental Association, the Englewood Dental Society and the Chicago Dental Society. He was past president of the Arcolian Dental Society. He was a scratch golfer and Rockford City Boys Champion in 1960 and 1961. He was an avid outdoorsmen and enjoyed spending time with his family at their cabin in Canada. He also had his private pilot’s license. He had many talents and interests, the most important of which was ensuring the success of his children. Survivors include his wife; eight children, Eugene (Bobbie Jean) Leonard, Elmhurst, Kathryn Leonard, Chicago, Joseph (Rebecca) Leonard, LaGrange, Andrew (Elizabeth) Leonard, Elmhurst, Daniel (Carol) Leonard, Chicago, Christopher (Rebecca) Leonard, Elmhurst, Matthew Leonard, Chicago, and John (Marinne) Leonard, Alton; 15 grandchildren, Gene, Anthony, Nicole, Kristine, Megan, Joseph, Jacob, Angelina, Emily, Alexandra, Jack, Kelly, Christopher, Grace and Heidi; three brothers, Jack (Terri), Michael (Nancy) and Patrick (Eileen); three sisters, Joanne (Dan) Scharf, Mary (Stu) Cravens and Kate (Vic) Giovingo; his mother-in-law, Laura Ingrassia; and 50 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Joseph Ingrassia. Visitation was March 29 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Mass of the Resurrection was March 30 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hartland, with the Rev. Joseph Naill presiding. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Hartland. Florence L. Riley
Florence L. Riley, 90, Libertyville and formerly of Woodstock, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Winchester House in Libertyville. She was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Leland, to James W. and Lucy (Elkin) Marshall. She married M. Harold Riley Oct. 22, 1941. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. She was a member of the Ladies of the Knights and the Mariola Club, and she sang in the choir. She had been employed for many years in the kitchen at Marian Central Catholic High School. Survivors include a daughter, Frances Heinmiller, Grayslake; a son, Matthew T. (Marilyn) Riley, Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Charles, Robert, James and Joseph Heinmiller and Dan, Cheryl and David Riley; and three great-grandchildren, Zachery Riley and Joey and Julianna Heinmiller, with a fourth to be born in August. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Aug. 30, 1970; her stepmother, Ruby; and a brother, David Riley. Visitation was March 28 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The Mass of the Resurrection was held March 29 in the St. Joseph Center at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Sylvester Nnaso officiating. Interment was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock.

William Joseph Cannon
William Joseph Cannon, 56, Woodstock and formerly of Crystal Lake, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was born Sept. 13, 1947, in Chicago, to William H. and Catherine G. (Day) Cannon. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin on the U.S.S. Hancock during the Vietnam War. He was an Eagle Scout with Troop 168 and was confirmed at the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake. Survivors include two sisters, Mary Sue (Geoffrey) Iverson, Arlington Heights, and Martha (Kenneth) Urban, Elk Grove Village; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Ann (Guillermo) Camargo, Buffalo Grove, Kimberly Sue Iverson, Wheeling, and Daniel Scott Urban and Michael Alan Urban, Elk Grove Village; a great-nephew, Andrew J. Camargo, Buffalo Grove; two aunts, Marian Devereux and Margery Schuster, both of Downers Grove; and an uncle, Jack Cannon, Athens, Ala. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was March 28 at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, Crystal Lake. The funeral service was held March 29 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ray Banner officiating. Louise Handrock
Louise Handrock, 89, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at her daughter’s home in Ridgefield. She was born March 5, 1914, in Frankfort, Ind., to William and Charlotte (Carpenter) Gronow. She married Arthur W. Handrock Oct. 4, 1933, in Crystal Lake. She was a member of the Congregational Church of Algonquin. She and her husband lived in Crystal Lake for many years until moving to Bull Shoals, Ark., in 1974, then moving back to Crystal Lake in the late ’70s. Together they owned the Snack Bar restaurant in Crystal Lake. While living in Bull Shoals, they owned and operated the Village Deli. She also worked for Geiske Department Store in Crystal Lake. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Crystal Lake. Survivors include two daughters, Sally (Victor) Owens, Crystal Lake, and Judith Collins, Ridgefield; three grandchildren, Patrick Collins, Wonder Lake, Tim Collins, McHenry, and Paul (Sandy) Owens, Fayetteville, Ark.; a brother, William Gronow, Crystal Lake; and five great-grandchildren, Danika and James Collins, Catlin and Blake Owens and Sheena Gilley. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, April 26, 1996; a son-in-law, John Collins, Aug. 18, 1998; a brother, Leo; and four sisters, Marge, Rosebelle “Dutch,” Frances and Edith Mae. Visitation was Feb. 15 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral service was Feb. 16 at the funeral home with the Rev. Dorothy P. Kuhlman
Dorothy P. Kuhlman, 88, Woodstock, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Hearthstone Manor, Woodstock. She was born May 23, 1915, in Chicago, to William and Margaret (Ziehm) Pingel. She married Myron Kuhlman May 10, 1939, in Chicago. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Woodstock, and an active resident at Hearthstone Village until shortly before her death. Survivors include four daughters, Kathleen (Jerry) Vasek, Westmont, Peggy (Kelly) McClain, Woodstock, Janet Merutka, Golf, and Deborah (Michael Brooks) Kuhlman, Park Ridge; eight grandchildren, Polly Myers, Rosie, Katie and Johanna Vasek, Tony Halda, Christy Sturm, Andrew McClain and Mara Merutka; and six great-grandchildren, Joseph Sweet, Jade Halda, Maggie, Steven and Henry Sturm and Summer Myers. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Louise Anderson and Gertrude Ehlers; and a brother, William Pingel. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 22, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1300 Kishwaukee Valley Road, Woodstock. Dora Dean Burlack
Dora Dean Burlack, 79, Wonder Lake, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at her home. She was born Nov. 26, 1924, in Chicago, to Charles and Hilda (Lindquiest) Windebank. She married Stanley J. Burlack June 5, 1947, in Chicago. She had been a resident of Wonder Lake since 1950. She enjoyed going to garage sales and working in the yard. She was an avid collector of angels. Survivors include four children, Anna Marie Roeske, Helen Mary Burlack, John Andrew Burlack and Thomas John Burlack, all of Wonder Lake; four grandchildren, Adam (Collett), Arthur Warren, Spring (Jerime) and Shawn Michael; four great-grandchildren, Adam, Jordan, Felicia and Jerime; a sister, Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Kay Glogawski; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, March 17, 1987; a son, Merlin; her parents; and three sisters, Julia, Lorraine and Violet. Visitation, followed by the service, was Feb. 17 at Justen’s Wonder Lake Funeral Home, Wonder Lake. Interment was in Ringwood Cemetery, Ringwood. Memorials made to the family would be appreciated.

Elly A. Glawe
Elly A. Glawe, 77, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at her son’s home in Elmhurst. She was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Germany, to Heinrich and Helene (Koring) Wellner. She married Robert J. Glawe Sept. 5, 1953, in Woodstock. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. She was active in Grace Circle and also in the Bible study group at the church. She worked as a waitress at Black Forest Restaurant and Angelo’s, both in Woodstock. She was also a cashier at Liquor Mart, Woodstock. She enjoyed her family and her friends and will be missed by all. Survivors include a son, William (Janet) Glawe, Elmhurst; and four brothers, Wilhelm, Heinrich, Herbert and Gunter, and a sister, Marianne, all of Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Kurt and Paul. Visitation was Feb. 12 at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. The funeral service was Feb. 13 at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Arthur Bergren officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Woodstock. Anne K. Sterczek
Anne K. Sterczek, 85, Woodstock, formerly of McHenry, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Hearthstone Manor Nursing Home, Woodstock. She was born July 1, 1918, in Chicago, to Stanley and Anne (Adamowski) Szyper. She married John Sterczek Sept. 4, 1938, in Chicago. She was a member of Holy Apostle Catholic Church, McHenry. She had worked for Resurrection Hospital in Chicago for 23 years. She enjoyed singing and quilting. Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Leon) Jankowski, Woodstock, and Alice (Timothy) Rose, Lisle; a son, Paul Sterczek, Long Island, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Kimberly (Stephen) Shields, Mark (Michele) Jankowski, Leslie (Joshua) Schnulle, Gregory Rose and Amy Rose; five great-grandchildren, Ian, Travis, Zachary, Tristan and Harlee Anne; and two sisters, Florence Batan and Helen (John) Wolan. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jan. 12, 1994; a daughter, Suzanne Ryan; three brothers, Edward, Ted and Casey; and a sister, Stella. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Carol Ruth Hanley
Carol Ruth Hanley (nee Brown), 64, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at home after a long battle with breast cancer. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Woodstock, where she served on the altar guild and was the church coordinator for the CROP Walk. She was born and raised in Milwaukee and attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She was a stewardess with United Airlines. She spent the past 12 years as an insurance agent in Woodstock. Survivors include her husband, Bruce; a son, Craig (Nicole) Hanley, McHenry; three daughters, Cathleen Hanley, Elgin, Jennifer (Brian) Schweitzer, McHenry, and Erin (Tom) Brefeld, Caledonia; five grandchildren, Gabrielle, Samantha, Maxwell, Marissa and Katelyn; her mother, Gertrude Brown; two sisters, Judith Hanson and Virginia Simerly; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Brown. Interment will be private. Family and friends will gather from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 401 St. John’s Road, Woodstock, with the Revs. Thomas Larson and Harold Ross officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or the family.

Lillian Powers
Lillian Powers, 80, Crystal Lake, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at her home, after a valiant battle with a long illness. She married Daniel “Danny” Powers Sept. 20, 1947, and was preceded in death by him in 1974. She was a favorite waitress in the local area and had been a waitress for many years at the Milk Pail Restaurant, Dundee. She was loved by customers and staff alike for her love of people and of service to others. Survivors include four children, Kathleen Lambert, Browntown, Wis., Cindy Powers, Libertyville, Deborah (Daniel) Herting, Browntown, and Maureen (Michael) Murray, Woodstock; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Visitation was held June 2 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The Mass of the Resurrection was held June 3 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock, with the Monsignor James McLoughlin officiating. Interment was in Crystal Lake Memorial Park Cemetery, Crystal Lake. Memorial donations can be made to Monroe Clinic Hospice, Monroe, Wis., or to Special Olympics.

William G. Meyer
William G. Meyer, 48, Woodstock, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at his home. He was born June 4, 1955, in Woodstock, to George and Audrey Anne (Riley) Meyer Jr. He worked as a machine foreman for Rockford Spring. He enjoyed woodworking and all outdoor sports and activities. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his mother, Woodstock; three sisters, Anita (Frank) Stratman, Flossmoor, Christine (Steven) Hinderliter, Woodstock, and Audrey (David) Klabunde, New Mexico; a stepdaughter, Stephanie (Tony) Martino, Poplar Grove; five step-grandchildren; three nieces; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Feb. 2, 1992. Visitation was June 2 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral service was held June 3 at the funeral home. Janice Metros Johnston
Janice Metros Johnston, 67, Bull Valley, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at her home. She was born Dec. 19, 1936, in Chicago, to Ben C. and Alma (Girard) Metros. She married Robert Gilbert Johnston Sept. 12, 1959, at St. Thomas Church, Chicago. She was a lawyer for many years. She earned a bachelor of arts degree and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. She earned her law degree from Loyola University in Chicago. She was active in the Bull Valley Association. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Robert Benjamin (Leisa) Johnston, Chicago, and Iain (Elizabeth) Johnston, Chicago; two grandchildren, Lily Grace Johnson and Robert Wallace Macgregor Johnston; and a brother, Ronald (Elyce) Metros, Hot Springs, Ark. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Bernard Metros. Visitation was June 3 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Henry ‘Bud’ Duhai
Henry “Bud” Duhai, 73, Monroe, Wis., died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Custer Park, to Peter and Katherin (Kauk) Duhai. He married Patricia Hagemann April 11, 1953, in Lisle. He did carpenter work for 15 years in Naperville, then farmed in the Monroe, Wis., area from 1971 until 1981. He then moved to the Somonauk-Naperville areas, working at various golf courses until 1995 when he retired. He then moved to Willow Springs, Mo., where he operated a beef farm. He began restoring old tractors and trucks and returned to Monroe in 2000 where he continued his restoration work with tractors. He was always helping to fix others’ equipment when he was able. He attended auctioneer school and was certified. He was a licensed real estate agent in Illinois. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and going to flea markets. Survivors include his wife, Monroe, Wis.; a son, Charles (Nancy) Duhai, Woodstock; four grandchildren, Chad Duhai, Justin Duhai, Lindsey Duhai and Kelsey Duhai, all of Woodstock; seven sisters, Kate Pantke, Tucson, Ariz., Ella (Orman) Boldt, DeKalb, Mary Pfaff, Yorkville, Anna Calaway, Grand Marsh, Wis., Laura Calaway, Astoria, Josephine (Paul) Strong, Yorkville, and Johanna (Herbert) Jackson, Naperville; a brother, John (Norma) Duhai, Naperville; a sister-in-law, Judy Duhai, Westmont; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Mary Ann Duhai; and a brother, Robert Duhai. Visitation was held June 4 at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, Naperville. Virginia J. ‘Pat’ Fitzgerald
Virginia J. “Pat” Fitzgerald, 85, Wonder Lake, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry. She was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Evanston, to Gustav LeRoy and Sarah Elizabeth (Wright) Strom. She married William J. “Bill” Fitzgerald March 8, 1947, in Evanston. Raised and educated in Evanston, she attended Northwestern University in Evanston. As a young woman, she worked with the American Red Cross during World War II as a nurses aide. A resident of Wonder Lake for more than 35 years, she spent summers at her parents’ home in Wonder Lake and later became a year-round resident. Before moving to Wonder Lake, she lived in Northbrook, where she taught kindergarten and was a school board member. She later taught at Cooper Kiddie College in McHenry for more than 10 years. She was a member and past president of the Wonder Lake Women’s Club and a past member of the Wonder Lake Yacht Club. She supported her husband when he was a member of the McHenry County Board. She enjoyed golfing and water activities. She was an avid horseback rider, and she first met her husband at a horse riding stable in Oak Brook. Survivors include her children, William J. (Jane) Fitzgerald Jr., Wonder Lake, Pamela Ann (Lyle) Jensen, Eden Prairie, Minn., Kevin C. (Vera) Fitzgerald, Cary, and Heather K. Fitzgerald, Wonder Lake; eight grandchildren, Katie, Maureen, Shauna and Jimmy, Laura, Sarah, Cassandra and Victoria; a great-grandchild, Avery; three brothers, George (Dottie) Strom, Port Orange, Fla., Jack (Shirley) Strom, Lake Forest, and James (Ruth) Strom, DeSoto, Texas; a sister-in-law, Sherle Strom, Arlington Heights; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, July 14, 1991; a daughter, Deborah Lee Fitzgerald, 1956; a great-granddaughter, Abbigail Elizabeth Fitzgerald-Szymczak; and a brother, Robert Strom. Robert F. Smith
Robert F. Smith, 22, Woodstock, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was born June 13, 1981, in Barrington, to Thomas F. and Carol Ann (Hugar) Smith. He was the owner of Robert F. Smith Installations. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially snowboarding, skateboarding and fishing. Survivors include his parents, Woodstock; nine brothers and sisters, Christopher Smith and Brian Smith, both of California, and Kevin Smith, Mark Smith, Paul Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Keri Smith, Kathryn Smith and Laura Mitchell, all of Woodstock; a nephew, Connor; a niece, Kayalia; and his maternal grandparents, Chester and Margaret Hugar, West Chicago. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Anthony and Josephine Smith. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Mildred C. Engebretson
Mildred C. Engebretson, 67, Morristown, Tenn., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Lifecare Center, Morristown. She was born Dec. 9, 1937, in Middlesboro, Ky., to Lee G. and Minnie (Johnson) Wilson. She married Milton L. Engebretson Sr. Survivors include her father, Middlesboro; a son, Milton (Edith) Engebretson Jr., Austin, Ind.; a daughter, Toni Lynn (Tim) Whiston, Woodstock; four grandchildren, Tara, Taylor, Trevor and Julie; two brothers, Ivan Dale Wilson, Tazewell, Tenn., and Jerry Wayne Wilson, Middlesboro; and a sister, Betsy Olson, Woodstock.

Ruth Helen Czarny
Ruth Helen Czarny, 89, Woodstock and formerly of Chicago, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at her home. She was born March 3, 1915, in Palmyra, Pa., to John Edward and Elizabeth Belle (Arnold) Shearer. She married Louis J. Czarny Oct. 13, 1945, in Palmyra. She was a homemaker. The things that gave her the most joy were her family and the family's pets, Jake and Fritz. She was known as "Busia" to the children and was loved by all who knew her. Survivors include a son, Louis J.E. (Janie) Czarny; a granddaughter, Lisa (Derek) Hyrkas; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews in Pennsylvania and Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dec. 30, 1995; her parents; four brothers, Ammon, Lloyd, Charles and Howard Shearer; three sisters, Elsie Emrich, Myrtle Hartman and Nora Howe; an infant twin brother and sister; and her grandparents, Jacob W. and Mary Ann (Kauffman) Shearer and Charles and Ella (Emerich) Arnold. Gregory Roy Bruno, 80, Woodstock, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born May 3, 1924, in Chicago, to Sam and Louise Bruno. He married Elaine Mahat in Chicago. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Daniel Dennis Tierney
Daniel Dennis Tierney, 53, Woodstock and formerly of Philadelphia and Ridgewood, N.J., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Chicago Northwestern Hospital. He was born Oct. 15, 1951, in Philadelphia, to John and Margaret (McLaughlin) Tierney. He married Denise Decarlo Sept. 8, 1979, in Valley Forge, Pa. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. His life touched many in positive ways that are too many to list. He made people smile, laugh and think. He generously gave himself to others more than he asked for in return. He knew fear but had tremendous courage. He taught his sons to have the courage to follow their dreams. His kindness and creativity have left an impact on the world around him. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and acquaintances but will never be forgotten. Eric Anton Stricker
Eric Anton Stricker, 39, Harvard, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Mercy Harvard Hospital. He was born July 8, 1965, in Harvard, to Anton "Tony" and Shirley (Planzer) Stricker. He married Shelley Powers July 25, 1987, in Harvard. He was the owner of Swiss Maid Bakery in Harvard, where he had worked since 1986. He was a member of Woodstock Bible Church, the Harvard Moose Lodge, the Baker's Dozen and the Harvard Jaycees. He was an awesome cook, enjoyed fishing and most especially was a loving husband and a devoted father. Survivors include his wife; five children, Alek, Macey, Mikhal, Karson and Kaegan, all at home; his parents, Harvard; five brothers, Kurt (Lori), Harvard, Paul (Laura), Williams Bay, Wis., Mark (Kim), Harvard, John (Chris), Harvard, and Todd (Lindsey), Geneva; and 18 nieces and nephews. Marie Louise Thompson
Marie Louise Thompson, Woodstock, died Jan. 19, 2005, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Woodstock. She was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Atlantic City, N.J., to Charles and Elise Ohrel. She married Paul M. Thompson. She lived in Libertyville from 1964 to 1997 and then moved to Vernon Hills. She moved to Valley Hi in 2004. Known and loved for her kindness and generosity, she had a genuine compassion for friends and strangers alike. She spent the first few years of her life in New York City. At age 10, following her father's untimely death, she moved with her mother and brother to Pfaffenhoffen, France. She lived there for 16 years, becoming fluent in three languages and one dialect. During World War II, she fought for the French resistance. When the Americans liberated the area in late 1944, she met her husband, who was a U.S. Army lieutenant, with whom she spent the next 48 years. Army life took them to six cities in five states, Japan and Germany, before they settled in Libertyville. She and her husband raised five children and one nephew. While in Libertyville, she also worked at Libertyville National Bank, GBC Corporation, Anchor Coupling and St. Therese Hospital, where she retired at age 74. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for the entire time she lived in the Libertyville area and left many wonderful friends there. Throughout her life, she also stayed in close contact with her French relatives, returning about once a year during the past decade. Survivors include her children, Terrie (Janet) Thompson, Eagan, Minn., Corinne (Dave) Beck, Woodstock, Charles (Nancy) Thompson, Centennial, Colo., Elizabeth (Ahmed) Mohamad, Chesterbrook, Pa., and Greg (Becky) Thompson, Kenosha, Wis.; two nephews, Michael (Sherry) Ohrel, St. Peters, Mo., and Charles Ohrel, Ridgewood; her grandchildren, Siri (Eric) Thompson, Nathan Thompson, Eric (Kelly) Beck, Josh (Laura) Beck, Dana and Sonya Mohamad and Doria, Matthew, Joelle and Jacob Thompson; three great-grandchildren, Ivan and Samuel Beck and Lilah Beck; two step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Taylor Copley; a grandniece, Kimberly Fields; and two great-grandnieces, Heather and Holly Fields. Melvin R. Krich
Melvin R. Krich, 64, Crystal Lake, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Janesville, Wis. He was born Oct. 13, 1940, in Elgin to George and Violet Krich. He married Gloria Gluff in 1962. He worked for Oak Manufacturing in Crystal Lake for more than 20 years. Daniel Salmen
Daniel Salmen, 83, Woodstock, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was born Oct. 27, 1921, to Daniel and Sarah (Krestel) Salmen. He married Lorraine Arthofer Nov. 22, 1941, in Chicago. He was a veteran of the Army, having served during World War II and was part of the D-Day invasion. He worked as a real estate agent for most of his life. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. He was a lover of music, was the band leader in high school and enjoyed big band era music. He and his wife were known to be great dancers. He also enjoyed golf. Survivors include his wife, Woodstock; a son, Daniel (Dannelle) Salmen, Rociada, N.M.; two daughters, Barbara (Wayne) Dye, Woodstock, and Gail (Jim) Mathieson, Wheaton; six grandchildren, Amy (Bobbie) Blalock, David Dye, Lucy Salmen, Christie (John) Crouch, Scott (Elizabeth) Mathieson and Brett Mathieson; and four great-grandchildren, Bradley, Daniel, Matthew and Zachary Blalock. Margaret C. Stone, 96, Woodstock, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. She was born Oct. 23, 1908, in Woodstock, to Charles and Martha (Anderson) Stone. She was a registered nurse and worked in various hospitals and doctor's offices in Woodstock until becoming the nurse for the Woodstock Die Cast Company. She held that position for 11 years before retiring in 1973. She was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. Vita L. Lombardo Dellegrazio, 89, Woodstock and formerly of Des Plaines, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at Hearthstone Manor, Woodstock. She was born Nov. 12, 1915, in Gary, Ind. Leila E. Birk Hanson, 92, Homestead, Fla., and formerly of Woodstock, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Jackson South Hospital, Miami. She was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Woodstock, to Herman and Emma (Griebel) Baars. She married Harold D. Birk June 30, 1934. He died Dec. 25, 1974. She then married Donald A. Hanson Sept. 24, 1983. He died Jan. 26, 1993. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, where she started the church library, sang in the choir for many years and was a member of the sewing circle. Survivors include four children, Donna (Robert) Tompkins, Phoenix, Patricia (Samual) Durham, Jonesboro, Ga., Betty Jean (Donald) Bottomley, Homestead, Fla., and Eugene Birk, Bowling Green, Ky.; four grandchildren, Jim and John Lookabough, Katy Thatcher and Bradley Durham; two great-grandchildren, Emma and Sadie Lookabough; and a sister-in-law, Marge Birk, Woodstock. She married George Phipps. She later married Robert M. Banet. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. She was also a member of the Elks Club and the Woodstock Moose Lodge, where she was involved with the Silver Manes. She worked at Woodstock Die Cast for 30 years. She enjoyed reading and playing cards. Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Bruce) Mohnen, McHenry, and Carol (William) Marsden, Salem., Wis.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Lynn Phipps, Alaska. Geraldine C. Bires, 88, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at her home. She was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Woodstock, to Harry O. and Anna (Voss) Anderson. She married Harry G. Bires June 7, 1945, in Woodstock. She worked for 32 years at Oak Manufacturing in Crystal Lake, retiring in 1980. She belonged to the Grace Circle, a women's club at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. Lorraine Pribla
Lorraine Pribla, 79, Lakeland, Fla., and formerly of Woodstock, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Oak Bridge Health Center, Lakeland, Fla. She was born Dec. 31, 1925, in Chicago. She lived in Woodstock for more than 50 years before moving to Lakeland in 2002. She was a graduate of Bryant and Stratton College and was the co-owner of Weslor Manufacturing. A former vice chairman of the Woodstock chapter of the Red Cross, she participated in numerous additional civic and social organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, American Legion, Altar and Rosary Society and Meals on Wheels, as well as serving on the board of directors of Woodbrook Estates in Lakeland. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Wesley; a son, Wesley (Linda), Woodstock; two daughters, Kathie (John) Sebastian, Holly Springs, N.C., and Cynthia (Joseph) Maloney, Granger, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The Rev. Noel Myers
The Rev. Noel Myers, 94, Woodstock, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Hearthstone Manor, Woodstock. He was born Aug. 20, 1910, in Browning, Mo., to William and Julia (Hatfield) Myers. He married Helen Berten Dec. 25, 1936, in Missouri. He had lived in this area since the summer of 1970, when he semi-retired from active ministry. He still served in temporary assignments, including in Vermont and central Illinois, while still ministering at Hearthstone Manor in Woodstock and the Evangelical Free Church in Crystal Lake. Survivors include his wife; four children, Noel (Phyllis) Myers, Kimberling City, Mo., Nancy Evans, Merrillville, Ind., Frances (William) Rapson, North Port, Fla., and Phyllis (Dwight) Cooke, Palm Bay, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Phillip and Paul, Kassandra and Katrina, Tanja, Joel and Christopher, Jennifer, Dwight, Abigail and Allison, and Deborah; and 15 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Brendan and Cydni, Elaina and Eric, Richard, Joe, Dakota, David and Alexander, Joshua and Isaac, and Alyssa, Jasmine and Isaac. Frank John Zajicek
Frank John Zajicek, 88, Puente Grande, Mexico, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in Guadalajara, Mexico. He was born Dec. 25, 1915, in Chicago Heights, to Frank and Susanna (Galik) Zajicek. He was first-generation American and spoke Czechoslovakian. He married Mary Aprati Sept. 6, 1941, in Chicago Heights. They had three children. He served in occupied Japan as an Army staff sergeant. Most of his working years were as an auto-body repairman and painter, finishing as a school custodian. He graduated from Bloom Township High School and was a record-setting runner in the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes and was nicknamed "Flash." He was a member of Church of Our Saviour where, as a young man, he served as a choir member, boys Sunday school teacher and trustee. His hobbies were singing, storytelling, playing his harmonicas and being friendly. He delighted children with stories, particularly about life as a boy with his pals on "The Hill." His children were amazed with his yodeling. He married Amalia Robles Mendoza Sept. 2, 1982, in Chicago Heights and retired to Mexico. There he learned some Spanish and enjoyed telling others about salvation through Jesus. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Beverly (Victor) Meuch, Wonder Lake, and Lynn (George) Wetzel, Peotone; a son, Dean (Barbara) Zajicek, Homewood; a sister, Theresa Laczi; a sister-in-law, Norma Zajicek; three grandsons, Luke, Adam and Ethan Wetzel; a goddaughter, Evelyn Garcia; nephews and nieces; and many relatives in Mexico and the United States. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Jerry. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Steger. Interment was in Puente Grande. Jeffrey Lynn Friedel
Jeffrey Lynn Friedel, 42, Coral Springs, Fla., and formerly of Woodstock, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Northwest Medical Center, Margate, Fla., after a long battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 4, 1962, in Woodstock, to Ronald and Shirley (Navlyt) Friedel. He married Shelley Olcott June 5, 1982, in Woodstock. He was a 1981 graduate of Woodstock High School. He lived in Woodstock prior to moving to Florida 14 years ago. He was very active with his sons and their soccer program, and he enjoyed building furniture and lawn ornaments. He had been employed as a sales representative for Behr Paint in Florida. Wilma S. Schultz, 90, Woodstock, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. She was born Dec. 4, 1914, in Stronghurst, to William and Pearl (Reynolds) Sullivan. She married Vernon E. Schultz Oct. 8, 1941, in Burlington, Iowa. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Woodstock. She was co-owner and manager of the Credit Bureau of McHenry County, Woodstock, for 24 years. She will be missed by all her family and friends. Survivors include four grandchildren, Duane, James, Charles and Brian Rigg; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Oct. 17, 1988. A graveside service was held Jan. 4 at Stronghurst Cemetery, Stronghurst. Funeral arrangements were made by Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock.

Marilyn F. Dusthimer
Marilyn F. Dusthimer, 71, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. She was born May 7, 1933, in Woodstock, to John and Marilyn (Wolf) Hanley. She married Warren L. Dusthimer Dec. 31, 1952, in Chicago. She worked as a clerk at the McHenry County Courthouse for many years. She was an avid reader and loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She will be missed by all that knew her. Survivors include five sons, Steve (Kate) Dusthimer, Napa, Calif., Tim (Heather) Dusthimer, Wonder Lake, Dave (Ginger) Dusthimer, Glendale, Ariz., Todd (Laura) Dusthimer, Houston, and Jay (Amy) Dusthimer, Austin, Texas; a daughter, Jill (Joe) Brasile, Woodstock; a sister, Shirley (Art) Stoltzke, Woodstock; and eight grandchildren, Sarah, Cody, Justine, Kane, Ryan, Haley, Paige and Brooke. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oct. 5, 1991; a son, Terry Dusthimer, in 1976; and a brother, John Hanley. A memorial service was held Jan. 3 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock, with the Rev. Roger Olson officiating. Interment was private.

William Phelan
William Phelan, 77, Princeton, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at St. Margaret's Hospital, Spring Valley. He was born Aug. 11, 1926, to Charles and Lola (Craven) Phelan. He married Trudy Herrmann of Augsburg, Germany, Dec. 23, 1969. He graduated from Woodstock High School and Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. He started his optometry practice in Princeton in January 1948. He was a charter member of Princeton Elks Lodge 1461 and had been a member of the Peoria Shrine Mohammed Temple. He was a member of the Princeton Lions Club, Bureau Valley Country Club and honorary society of the "Greasy Spoon" in Princeton. Survivors include his wife; two sons, William (Susan) Phelan, Spring, Texas, and Craig (Carol) Phelan, Buda; a brother, Charles (Babe) Phelan, Mount Prospect; one stepson, Michael Vowels, Kewanee; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Phelan. Private services and burial were in Oakland Cemetery, Princeton. Arrangements were made by Norberg Memorial Home, Princeton.

Darlene M. Way
Darlene M. Way, 61, Woodstock, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, after a battle with cancer. She was born Sept. 3, 1943, in Woodstock, to Kenneth and Dorothy Bremer Fay. She enjoyed her grandchildren and going to bingo with her mother and her friends. She also enjoyed working and talking to everyone. She enjoyed the five years she spent up North on the Indian reservation with her son Robert. Survivors include her mother, Woodstock; three children, Connie (Jeff) Oberhofer, Fountain Hills, Ariz., Kenneth R. (Robyn) Huffar, Carpentersville, and Robert M. Way, Williams Bay, Wis.; three grandchildren, Jacob S. Koldeway, Wisconsin, Jared J. Oberhofer, Fountain Hills, and Danner Michael Way, Waterford, Wis.; and a brother, Lawrence (Linda) Fay. She was preceded is death by her father and a grandson, Justin J. Koldeway. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the 7:30 p.m. service, Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Interment will be private.

Stella B. Vetter
Stella B. Vetter, 80, Kirbyville, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born April 16, 1924, in Manitowoc, Wis. She married Norman Vetter Aug. 10, 1942, in Manitowoc. She had moved to the Kirbyville area from Belvidere in 1981. She was a retired bookkeeper for School District 100 in Belvidere. She was a member of the Forsyth United Methodist Church, Forsyth, Mo. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Ronald (Terri) Vetter, Belvidere, and Robert (Grace) Vetter, Woodstock; a sister, Doris Goeke, Manitowoc; a half-brother, Chuck Kocian, Elko, Wis.; and four grandchildren. Visitation was Dec. 23 at Snapp-Bearden Funeral Home, Branson, Mo. The funeral service was held Dec. 24 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Larry Lawman officiating. Burial was in Ozarks Memorial Park Cemetery, Branson. Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 4995, Springfield, MO 65808-4995.
