Ruby Maxine Vaughn
MARION -- Ruby Maxine Vaughn, 82, of Marion, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Mrs. Vaughn was born July 28, 1922, in Centralia, to Wilbur Ishmael and Gladys Lovell (Elliott) Guymon. She married F. Eugene Vaughn on May 27, 1950, in Salem, and he survives. Ruby was a retired school teacher. She taught fourth grade for 27 years at schools including Spring Moore in Carbondale, a small country school in Salem, and South Side in Herrin. She was a charter member of Parrish Park Baptist Church in Marion as well as a member of the Cancer Support Group at Herrin Hospital and Hearts Helping Harts in Marion. Survivors include her husband, F. Eugene Vaughn of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Ron E. and Jane Vaughn of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, JoEllen and Jim Anderson of Caseyville; five grandchildren, Amanda and Blake Allen Vaughn and Matt, Pat and Josh Anderson; and four sisters, Freda Brock of Fairfield, Iris Sawyer of Miami, Okla., Wanita Kendrick of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jo Nell Cannon of Mount Vernon. Services will be at noon Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Marion, with the Revs. Carl Barnfield and Shaw DeMent co-officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Parrish Park Baptist Church in Marion. Memorial donations may be made to the Illinois WMU Scholarship Fund. Envelopes will be provided and accepted at the funeral home.

GOLCONDA -- Ida Vesta (Trammell) Powell, 93, of Golconda, formerly of Johnson County, died at 11:35 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in Pope County Care Center in Golconda. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Buncombe, with the Rev. Dennis Fager officiating. Those attending are asked to gather at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Cemetery or to Eddyville Cemetery.
Robert Wiggins
WEST CITY -- Robert Wiggins, 79, of West City, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, with a military service, in Poulson Funeral Home, with Bishop Derick Key officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Wiggins had a heating/cooling business and a pest control business. He was a high priest in the Church of the Latter-Day Saints in West Frankfort. He was a member of the American Legion, and had been a West City councilman, precinct committeeman and president of the PTA at Washington Grade School. He was also zoning commissioner for 17 years. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served as a medic. He was born July 2, 1925, in Benton, to George and Elizabeth Jewel (Hays) Wiggins. He married Ramona (Wells) Wiggins, and she survives of West City. Along with his wife, survivors include four sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Cheerie Wiggins of Madisonville, Ala., and John, Jack and Danny Wiggins, all of West City; three grandsons, Robert L. Jr. and wife Christine Wiggins and Eric and Joshua Wiggins, all of Madisonville; two great-grandchildren, Marissa and Brittney Wiggins, both of Madisonville; and one brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Betty Wiggins of Benton. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Donna K. Wiggins; three brothers, Bill, Lester and G. H. Wiggins; and two sisters, Della Johnson and Estelle King.

METROPOLIS -- Helen E. Wood, 93, of Metropolis, formerly of Joppa, died at 4:05 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Metropolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis, with the Rev. David Keyes officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in Joppa. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

CARBONDALE -- Statsie Carl Mosley Jr., 84, died at 4:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in Oak Grove Rehabilitation and Skill Care in Carbondale. Arrangements are pending at the Algee's Funeral Home in Carbondale.
Mary Frances Higdon Wood
HERRIN -- Mary Frances Higdon Wood, 85, of Herrin, departed this world to live with the Lord at 2:50 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in Herrin Hospital. Mary was born Jan. 13, 1920, in Madisonville, Ky., to Robert E. and Neva (Vannoy) Higdon. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Herrin, AARP and Herrin Senior Citizens. Survivors include one son, Bill G. Williams and his fiancee, Marilyn, of Herrin; one sister, LaDonna Kerley of Herrin; one brother, William Higdon of Herrin; four grandchildren and their spouses, Terry and Jeanette Williams of Herrin, Tim and Connie Williams of Ray City, Ga., Melodie and Duane Doty of Carterville, and Todd Williams of Deerfield; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces, Darlene Eason of Lexington, Tenn., and Kathy Armstrong of Lobelville, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Wayne Higdon. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin, with the Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will follow in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff, ICU, Hospice of Southern Illinois and Dr. Kelly Evans for their care and compassion. Mary will be missed by many family and friends. Memorial donations may be made to Second Baptist Church of Herrin and will be accepted at the funeral home.

HARRISBURG -- Claude Dean Short, 69, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in Harrisburg Medical Center, surrounded by his family and friends. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, in Reed's Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn Cemetery.
