TAMAROA -- Leslie H. Thompson, 93, of Champaign, formerly of Tamaroa, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at home. Arrangements are pending at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.

Beulah Gates
MARION -- Beulah Gates, 97, of Marion, formerly of Herrin, died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in Parkway Manor in Marion. Beulah was born May 15, 1907, to Joe and Mary (Klein) Troutman in Carbondale. She married Irving W. Gates on April 28, 1934, in Chicago, and he preceded her in death. Beulah was a homemaker. She was a member of PEO for 45 years. Beulah is survived by two sons, Bill Gates of Phoenix, and the Rev. Daniel T. Gates of Clovis, Calif. ; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Fluck of Marion; and one brother, G. L. Troutman of California. She was preceded by her parents; her husband, Irving; two brothers, Walter and Joe Troutman; and one sister, Opal Christy. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with her son, the Rev. Daniel T. Gates, officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Marion.

Carole H. Malony
CARBONDALE -- Carole H. Malony, 72, of Carbondale, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, in Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale, with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Mrs. Malony was director of nurses at Styrest Nursing Home and Carbondale Manor and an R. N. at Doctors Hospital and Choate Mental Health, Department of Human Resources, State of Illinois. She was born Feb. 3, 1933, in Mattoon, to Irving and Delia Dallas Levinton. She married Dr. W. R. Malony on June 16, 1980. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Kim Malony of Carbondale; one daughter, Deborah Malony of Carbondale; her long-time companion, Robert Miller of Carbondale; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one son, David Malony. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Delores Fern Scrutchfield Benson
DU QUOIN -- Delores Fern Scrutchfield Benson, 87, of Hillsboro, formerly of Du Quoin, passed away at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in the St. Mary-Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. Fern was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church of Du Quoin. She was born Dec. 5, 1917, in Benton, the daughter of David Harvey and Lena Elizabeth (Powell) Scrutchfield. She married Virgil J. Benson on Sept. 2, 1939, in Jackson, Mo. He passed away on Dec. 11, 2003. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Rebecca Benson of Creve Coeur, Mo., and Jerry and Cheryl Benson of Ardmore, Okla. ; one daughter, Judith C. Heiman of Nashville; one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Benson of Ardmore; two sisters, Mary Hutchens and Mildred Smothers, both of Benton; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Ronald Benson; one brother; and one sister. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with Dr. John Lewis officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Searby Funeral Home. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin. Friends may make memorials to the First Christian Church of Du Quoin. Memorials will be accepted at the funeral home.

Charley Williams
MURPHYSBORO -- Charley Williams, 82, of Murphysboro, died at 8:40 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Denny Steed officiating. Burial will be in Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Williams was retired from Midwest Rubber in Sauget. He was born March 13, 1922, in Murphysboro, to Itsel and Ruby Ballard Williams. He married Della B. Beisner on May 5, 1956, in East St. Louis. Survivors include his wife, Della B. Williams of Murphysboro; six children and their spouses, Jim and Carolyn Beisner of Pinckneyville, Ruby and Kenny House of Galatia, Charles E. Williams of Carbondale, Madeline Williams of Murphysboro, Helen and Steve Mathis of Olive Branch, and Sharon K. and Andrew Carpenter of Murphysboro; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen Marie Mileur. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Virtie Mae Newell Abercrombie
TAMMS -- Virtie Mae Newell Abercrombie, 90, of McClure, formerly of Tamms, died at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. Mrs. Abercrombie was born May 1, 1914, in Alexander County, the daughter of the late James and Gertrude (Story) Warren. Mrs. Abercrombie was a Pentecostal and was a homemaker and housewife. Mrs. Abercrombie was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Lee Newell, in 1962; her second husband, Chester Abercrombie; one daughter, Myrtle Hawkins; and one son, Ralph Newell. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Loil 'Red' Tinsley of Cape Girardeau; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Services for Virtie Mae Newell Abercrombie will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, in Jones Funeral Home in Tamms, with the Rev. Dee Hazelwood officiating. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery in rural Dongola. Friends may call between 5 and 8 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home.

Dora P. Morber
DONGOLA -- Dora P. Morber, 88, a long-time resident of Dongola, died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. She was born Mar. 23, 1916, in Makanda, the daughter of the late Cyrus J. and Laura J. (King) Sims. Mrs. Morber retired from the former Henard Shelter Care Home in Dongola where she worked for 18 years. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Delores and Sonny Sims Adams of Cobden and Phyllis and Carl Helt of Charleston, Mo. ; one son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Margie born of Du Quoin; two brothers, Harlan Sims of Du Quoin and Lee Roy Sims of Murphysboro; three sisters, Pearl Raines and Ada Nation, both of Murphysboro, and Thelma Downs of Marion; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters. Services for Dora Morber were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, in Crain Funeral Home in Dongola. Interment was in Alto Pass Cemetery. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Howard Simmons
HERRIN -- Howard Simmons of Herrin died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at home. Arrangements are incomplete at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
