ENERGY -- Clarence Ward, 70, died at 4 a.m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Apostolic Church in Marion. Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church. Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is in charge of arrangements.
Robert 'Bob' Hepburn
UNION COUNTY -- Robert J. 'Bob' Hepburn, 85, Hollywood, Fla., formerly of Union County, passed away Monday, June 14, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Hollywood. He was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Chicago, the son of Edward and Augusta (Bermeister) Hepburn. He married Virginia C. Penninger on Oct. 7, 1939, in Chicago. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2003. He was a retired motel manager. He served in the U. S. Marines during World War II and was a life member of the Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 Anna VFW. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Sharon Hepburn of Hollywood, Fla., and Mike and Diana Hepburn of Jonesboro; six grandchildren, Rena Stanley, Robert, Allen and Andrea Hepburn, Carla Greiving and Michael Hepburn Jr. ; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with Dr. Richard Hertenstein officiating. Interment will be in Jonesboro Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted at the grave by Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 Anna VFW. Memorials may be made to Anna VFW or to Mount Moriah Lutheran Church.
Bruce Kenneth Derossett
CREAL SPRINGS -- Bruce Kenneth Derossett, 54, of Creal Springs, formerly of Cobden and Wolf Lake, died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2004, at home. He was born Dec. 30, 1949, in Anna, the son of Everett Elmer and Violet Leona Allen Derossett. He is survived by his mother, Violet Derossett of Wolf Lake; his ex-wife, Monta Derossett of Creal Springs; one son, Kenneth Wayne Derossett of Grand Tower; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Connie Derossett of Wolf Lake; five stepchildren, Tina Lambing of Leesburg, Fla., Letha Schluterbush of Portland, Ore., Delaine Basler of Broadway, N. Y., Karl Basler of New Burnside and Melinda Hartsock of Cobden; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Everett Elmer Derossett; and two brothers, Everett Allen Derossett and Wayne Derossett. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of Anna VFW Post 3455. He was a mechanic and had worked as a deckhand on the river. Services were Tuesday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna. The Rev. John Cripps officiated. Interment was in Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower. Military honors were performed by Anna VFW Post 3455. Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna was in charge of arrangements.

CARMI -- Ruth Woody, 88, of Roseville, Mich., died at 6:25 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, in Wabash Christian Retirement in Carmi. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Watson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ben Schuk officiating. Burial will be in Lindale Cemetery in Eldorado. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Frances Pauline Benton
HERRIN -- Francis Pauline Benton, 87, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the O'Fallon Health Care Center. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. today, June 19, 2004, at Second Baptist Church in Herrin, with the Rev. Bill Fox officiating. Viewing will be from 2 to 3 p.m. at Lakeview Baptist Church in Fairview Heights. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Lakeview Cemetery in Swansea. Frances was born Jan. 23, 1917, in Herrin, the daughter of Ray and Kate (McCalpin) Alexander. Both parents preceded her in death. She married Robert Benton. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Eva Dekum and two brothers, James and Dwight. Survivors are her three sons, Mr. Allen and Karen Benton of Little Rock, Ark., Mr. William and Judy Benton of Cahokia; two sisters, Mrs. Vera Woolard of Herrin and Mrs. Mary Lee McCree of Herrin. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Herrin and a former member of the Lakeview Baptist Church in Swansea, where she worked with the seniors and the youth of the church.
Bob Hayes
JONESBORO -- Bob G. Hayes, 75, of Jonesboro passed away Friday, June 18, 2004, at home. He was born April 28, 1929, in Tulsa, Okla., son of Ova Owen and Lurena (Webber) Hayes. He married Doris M. Newton on Aug. 8, 1970, in Cape Girardeau. She preceded him in death on Feb. 23, 2004. He was employed as a barber for many years. He also worked for Tammsco Silica Company. He was a past commander of District 25 American Legion, a past commander of 900 American Legion Post in McClure, a member of Forty et Eight Grand Voiture d'Illinois. He is survived by four daughters, Brenda Blevins and Linda Robert, both of Columbia, Mo., Jacqueline and husband Wayne Hubbs of Jonesboro and Donna and husband Randy Lingle of Metropolis; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one twin brother, Billy Joe and one son, Billy Joe. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Billy Freeman officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Valley Mission Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the grave by the Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 Anna VFW. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

CHESTER -- Helen L. Gerdemann, 89, of Springfield, Mo., formerly of Chester, died at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Mo. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester, with the Rev. Marvin 'Bud' Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Chester Education Association Scholarship Fund.

CARRIER MILLS -- Marie Wells, 84, of Carrier Mills, died at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills, with the Rev. Jack Hood officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the funeral home. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. She was born June 4, 1920, in Carrier Mills, to the late Marshall and Eiza (McCuan) Davis. She married Charles Wells on Oct. 29, 1938, and he preceded her in death on May 25, 1980. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of God of Harrisburg. She is survived by a daughter, Rita Adams of Carrier Mills; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Patty Wells of Harrisburg; a brother, Raymond Davis of Carrier Mills; five grandchildren, David Lee Van Hoy of Stonefort, Clint Wells of Harrisburg, Valerie Horton of Galatia, Billy Adams and Natalie Bethel, both of Carrier Mills; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Van Hoy, a brother, Denver Davis, two sisters, Geneva Chaney and Mary Davis and five great-grandchildren.
