Virgil H. Loyd
HERRIN -- Virgil H. Loyd, 80, died at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Herrin HospitaL. Mr. Loyd was born November 9, l921, in Marion to Hubert Ray and Anna Marie (Myers) Loyd. He married Edith Edwards November 21, 1941, in Johnston City. She survives. He was retired as a mechanic from Smoler Brothers in Herrin. He also worked in the Housekeeping Dept. at the Herrin HospitaL. He was a member of the Crenshaw Baptist Church and a World War II Veteran of the U. S. Navy. Survivors include his wife, Edith Loyd of Herrin; daughter and son-in-law, Deloris and Jim Priddy of Herrin; son and daughter-in-law, Don Robert and Judy Loyd of Little Rock, Ark. ; daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Jeanette and Don Cogdill of Herrin; sons, Billy Lee Loyd of Las Vegas, Nev., Earl Eugene Loyd of Fort Worth, Texas, and Kenneth Lynn Loyd of Springfield; 16 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Leo Powell of Johnston City. His parents, one sister, Alice Marie Eigenrauch, and one brother Sherman Ray Loyd preceded him in death. Graveside funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy, with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn. SCHELLER -- Eleanor D. Radake, 71, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, in her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Barbara Catholic Church in Scheller, with Father Daniel Jurek officiating. Burial will be in St. Barbara Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the reading of the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the St. Barbara Cemetery or donor's choice.

MCLEANSBORO -- Ella Lucinda (Smith) Davis, 90, of Springfield, Mo., formerly of McLeansboro, died at 4:05 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, in the Springfield Rehab Center in Springfield, Mo., Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro, with the Rev. Bill Reed officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Rebecca Shelley
WEST FRANKFORT -- Rebecca Shelley, 50, died Monday, May 27, 2002, in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after a courageous five year battle with cancer. Memorial services for Mrs. Shelley were held Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Stone Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with Sister Ruth Hayes officiating. Visitation was also Thursday at the funeral home. Rebecca was born Dec. 23, 1951, in Williamsport, Ind., the daughter of Jack and Marilyn (Odle) Flint. She married Stephen Shelley on Nov. 3, 1973, in Watseka, IlL. Mrs. Shelley was employed at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mount Vernon as a medical laboratory technician. Rebecca had a "green thumb" and enjoyed her gardening and plants. She is survived by her husband Stephen Shelley of West Frankfort; daughter, Reyna Shelley of West Frankfort; two sons, Rustin Shelley of West Frankfort and Ryan Shelley of West Frankfort; a brother, Tim Flint and wife, Marcia of Lafayette, Ind. ; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

MARION -- Charles William Boyt, age 73, of Marion, passed away at 5:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2002, in St. Louis University Hospital of St. Louis, Missouri. Graveside committal services for Charles William Boyt will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in the Maplewood Cemetery of Marion, with Gordon Lambert officiating. Those wishing to attend the committal service should gather at the cemetery prior to the time of the service. George R. Phillips
BENTON -- George R. Phillips, 84, of 1002 E. Main St., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2002, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Joe Arview officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Phillips was born May 26, 1918, in Franklin County the son of G. Ransom and Bertha (Barnfield) Phillips. He married the former Dorothy Jean Corey on Aug. 10, 1946, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 1989. He was a former salesman and owner of Petroff Packing in Benton. He later worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Benton American Legion Post No. 280 and a member of the East Benton Baptist Church. He is survived by a son, Randy Phillips and wife, Rebecca, Carbondale; a daughter, Stephenie Biggs and special friend, Jim Young, of Benton; four grandchildren, Stacey Overturf and husband, Jim, of Benton, Jera Foltz of Martinsville, Ind., Lindsey Phillips of Carbondale and Amber Phillips of Carbondale; four great-grandchildren, Ethan and Josie Overturf, Brittney Doxsie and Connor Foltz; a sister, Ina Bain of Benton; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Delores Hood and Floreine Rice and a brother, Hershel Phillips. Memorial contributions may be made to the Voluntary Service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Charles M. Sample
SESSER -- Charles M. Sample, 81, died at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with the Rev. Kevin Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Valier. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Sample had been a coal miner and a farmer. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Du Quoin and the United Mine Workers, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was born Nov. 10, 1920, in Sesser to Charles M. and Alta (Arterberry) Sample. He married Clara Mae Berner. She survives. Other survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Connie Sample of Benton; and grandchildren, Jason and Heather Sample of Christopher and Dana Sample of Benton. His parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Will G. Ebersohl
DE SOTO -- Will G. Ebersohl, 86, of 9611 S. Vanderpool, Chicago, formerly of De Soto, died at 10:35 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, in the Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. Will was born March 21, 1916 in De Soto to Jacob C. and Kate Ethel (Will) EbersohL. He married Rita Nowacki Aug. 16, 1943 in Murphysboro. She survives in Chicago. He is also survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Theda (Sheppard) Ebersohl of Oak Forest; two brothers, Lloyd Ebersohl of Glen Arms and Virgil Ebersohl of De Soto; a sister, Ruth (Ebersohl) Zehner of Riverdale; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Ebersohl of De Soto. His parents, three brothers, Jake, Ralph and Gussie Ebersohl and three sisters, Abbie Ebersohl, Marie Slater and an infant sister, Mary Ebersohl preceded him in death. Mr. Ebersohl was the former owner/operator of Harvard Heating and Air Conditioning in Chicago. Funeral services for Mr. Ebersohl will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler, with the Rev. Franklyn Schroeder of the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in De Soto officiating. Interment will be at the De Soto Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
