Wivalle E. Lipe
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Wivalle E. Lipe, age 87, of Willisville, formerly of Pinckneyville, who also lived in East St. Louis for 35 years, passed away at 2:17 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Belleville Memorial Hospital. Wivalle was born on Nov. 17, 1916, to William and Leta (Derricks) Lipe. In November 1937, he was united in marriage to Mary B. Moore in Pinckneyville, and she preceded him in death on April 6, 1988. He was a Baptist and served with the U. S. Army in World War II. He retired as a welder with the A. O. Smith Corp. in Granite City and had also worked as a coal miner in the Perry County area. Wivalle loved gardening and the outdoors. Survivors include seven daughters and five sons-in-law, Jean and Norman Stephan of Jacksonville, Joann and Kenneth Wallace of Paducah, Verna Mills of Paducah, Bonnie and Gary Adams of St. James, Mo., Sharon and Andy Kuscsik of Phoenix, Marilyn and Robert Donnell of Willisville, and Cynthia Fitch of Fairview Heights; one brother, Everette Lipe of Bunker Hill; three sisters, Dejah Hermany, Vernice Chapman and Ruth Fisher, all of Pinckneyville; 26 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Gladys Fuller; two brothers, Denean and Edward Lipe; three sisters, Lucille Taylor, Verna Lee Dunihoo, and Gwendolyn Lipe; one grandchild, Vicky Jean Keeling; and one aunt, Opal Derricks. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in the Denmark Baptist Church in Denmark. Interment will be in the Cutler Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be provided by Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post 2504 of Pinckneyville. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society or Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Bill Lawson
HERRIN -- Bill B. Lawson, age 80, of Herrin, passed away at 12:55 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Herrin Hospital. Bill's choice of final disposition was to be cremated. His family will honor his wishes and will have a memorial service at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in New Barham Cemetery in Marion, with the Rev. Brad Harlow officiating. Family and friends who wish to attend Bill's memorial service are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin is entrusted with Bill's memorial service arrangements. Bill was born in Herrin to John Thomas and Marie (Barham) Lawson on May 9, 1924. He was employed by the Bunny Bread Company and worked for 40 years until his retirement. Bill served our beloved country proudly during World War II. He was an avid golfer and a proud Herrin Tiger sports fan. Bill enjoyed the many friendships he developed over the years by drinking coffee with his pals at the Hardee's and McDonald's restaurants in Herrin. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Charles Patrick of Herrin; one grandson, John and wife Tracy Patrick of Marion; one great-grandson, Tyler Patrick of Herrin; three special friends, Joyce Calvert, who was the mother of his daughter, L. D. Starrick and Craig Baumgaurd, all of Herrin; and several loving nieces and nephews. Bill is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tom Lawson and L. P. Lawson; and one sister, Ruth Lawson. Bill will be dearly missed.

MURPHYSBORO -- Carol J. Mansker, 71, of Murphysboro, died at 11:01 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in St. Joseph Hospital in Murphysboro. She was born July 8, 1933, in Murphysboro, a daughter of the late Smithie A. and Mildred F. (Holder) Weathers. She married Herbert L. Mansker in 1978, and he survives. She was a member of Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro and was an employee of the Cal-Crest Jacket Co. and Good Luck Glove Factory in Murphysboro. She is alsosurvived by a daughter, Kathryn Lynn Etherton of De Soto; three stepdaughters, Janet Lee Webb and Vanna Thielman, both of Chester, and Patty Louise Mansker of Montana; a daughter-in-law, Verna Ornelas of Murphysboro; two brothers, Smithie Cyrus Weathers of Kansas City, Kan., and Timothy A. Weathers of Murphysboro; two sisters, Mary Ellen Bernardic of Kansas City, Mo., and Janice Rose Sack of Topeka, Kan. ; one grandchild; four great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, William Gene Ornelas; one son-in-law, Charles Etherton; one brother, Michael Weathers; and one sister, Frances Weathers. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in the Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, located on Old Illinois 13 between Carbondale and Murphysboro, with the Rev. Ken Sharp officiating. Interment will be in Paradise Cemetery in Steeleville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Henry E. Modglin
ULLIN -- Henry E. Modglin, 77, of Ullin, died at 6:22 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. A farmer all of his life, Henry was born July 15, 1927, in rural Pulaski County, to the late Henry H. and Cledia (Edwards) Modglin. He married the former Almeta Taylor on Nov. 26, 1947, in Pulaski. Henry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. To those who knew him, Henry was a man of few words who quietly went about his work. He was a hard working man, and the farm and his family were his whole life. Immediately after their marriage, Henry and his wife began farming on a small parcel of land, which his parents had purchased for them. Over the years, Henry built this into more than 600 acres, which he farmed alone only with occasional help. He enjoyed fishing with Almeta and travelinG. He was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church. Surviving Henry are his loving wife of 56 years, Almeta; his daughters, Linda (Bill) Britt and Teresa (Courtney) Blackburn; four granddaughters, Emily (Dennis) Mares, Rachel (Greg) Jackson, Amy Britt and Rebecca Britt; one great-granddaughter, Alex Jackson; a brother and two sisters-in-law, George and Iris Modglin, and Carolyn Modglin; two sisters, Minnie Verble and Edith Johnson; nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Clinton Modglin, and two sisters, Louise Sheriff and Altha Jones. Services for Henry E. Modglin will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at Crain Funeral Home in Ullin, with the Rev. Allen 'Pete' Vinson officiating. Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens with military honors by Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and on Sunday until time of services at Crain Funeral Home in Ullin. Francis 'Jerry' Cox
HERRIN -- Francis G. 'Jerry' Cox, 74, of Herrin, left this world on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in the Herrin Hospital. Mrs. Cox was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She was born Feb. 6, 1930, in Buckeye, Ariz., to Thomas and Pearl Myrtle (Lacy) Bendel. Jerry was united in marriage with David B. Cox on AuG. 19, 1956. He survives of Herrin. Also surviving are her children and their spouses, Rene and Jim Warner of Herrin, Charlene and Ernie Gwaltney of Herrin, Cecil Cox of Atlanta, Ga., Chris Shoemake of Herrin, David and Rene Cox of Herrin, and Tommy Cox of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Matt Colboth, Jodi Warner, Amy and husband Todd Bricker, Becky and husband Keith Stefan, Jeff Gwaltney, Torrey Cox, Lauren Cox, Steve and wife Jeanette Ruggeri, Brittney Cox, Ryan Cox, Jennifer Cox, and Tyler Cox; five great-grandchildren, Emma Colboth, Addison Bricker, Savannah Ruggeri, Logan Ruggeri and Nicole Stefan; and her special friends and caregivers, Jean Vannoy and Connie Dawes. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Interment will be in San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. Pauline Blaney
JONESBORO -- Pauline Blaney, 85, of Jonesboro, died at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at home. She was born on June 18, 1919, in Murray, Ky., the daughter of William Novis and Bessie Mae Hurt Wells. She married Edgar L. 'Monk' Blaney on March 7, 1935, in Metropolis. He preceded her in death on Feb. 26 , 1994. She attended the Tamms United Methodist Church. She had worked in retail sales as a clerk and was a homemaker and, above all, a devoted mother to her children. She is survived by her children, Doris Burnham of Lansing, Mich., Ralph and wife Diane Blaney of Tamms, Ronald and wife Peggy Blaney of Madison, Ind., Carol Hindman of Buncombe, Anita and husband Link Beatty of Anna, and Janet Blaney of Dongola; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Judith Forehand and Mary Ellen Rather; two grandchildren, David Brent Blaney and Michael Hindman; one sister, Lucille Curtis; and two brothers, Hardin and James Wells. Services for Mrs. Pauline Blaney will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Revs. Rob Grief and Les Pruehsner officiating and special words by Diane Blaney. MURPHYSBORO -- Dorothy L. Graff, age 80, of Murphysboro, passed away at 4:25 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday until the hour of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Fund. Dorothy was born on Jan. 12, 1924, in Ava, to Edward McBride and Margaret (Arnold) McBride. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Graff was a member of the First Christian Church of Murphysboro, and the Loyal Berean Sunday School Class. She married Wayne D. Graff on Nov. 4, 1945, and he survives. Other survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and David Reiman and Alice and Don Svanda, all of Murphysboro; three grandchildren, Jason Svanda and his wife Jessica Svanda of Murphysboro, Monica Chandley and her husband Todd Chandley of Evansville, Ind., and Allison Svanda of Murphysboro; two great-granddaughters, Olivia Chandley of Evansville, Ind. and Faith Svanda of Murphysboro; one sister, Pearl Austin and her husband Gale Austin of Washington; two sisters-in-law, Edna Yates and her husband Charles Yates of Murphysboro and Blanche Roberts and her husband Fred Wayne Roberts of Marion; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and her parents.
Frank R. Olguin
MURPHYSBORO -- Frank R. Olguin, 89, of Murphysboro, passed away at 5:10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home, with Father Gary Gummersheimer officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery in Sesser. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Andrew Church. Frank was born on AuG. 22, 1915, in Austin, Texas, to Jesse and Genevieve (Rogers) Olguin. He was a long shoreman with the Long Shoreman's Union local No. 19. Mr. Olguin served in the US Army during World War II. He was a former member of the Moose and Elks lodges. Frank married Alice Weir on June 9, 1945, in Seattle, and she preceded him in death on April 13, 1998. He is survived by one son, Ralph Olguin of Girard; five grandchildren, Melody Olguin of Murphysboro, Frank Olguin of Pana, Robert Olguin of Farmersville, Anita Wilson and her husband Gary of Ramsey, and Sherri White and her husband Chad White of Taylorville; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Galarza and Louise Guajardo, both of Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents.
