Norman W. McRoy
MURPHYSBORO -- Norman W. McRoy, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He had been a resident of Gulf Coast Village/Skilled Nursing Wing in Cape Coral, Fla., since August 2002. He was born Nov. 21, 1918, to William Joseph and Cecil Victoria McRoy (ne Lee) of Murphysboro. He was married in June 1944 to the former Gloria Jean CampbelL. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean; his son, Lee McRoy (Mary) of Carmi; his daughter, Jean Anne Bersch of Cape Coral, Fla. ; four brothers, Kenneth, Homer Lee, and Jackie Dean (Frances), all of Murphysboro, and D. C. (Mary Ann) of Herrin; one sister, Maxine Daum (Bill) of Murphysboro; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, one brother, Billie, and two sisters, Mary and Irene. His greatest pleasure in life was his family and helping others. He was known by his friends as an honest and ethical man, a trusted adviser. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Murphysboro, North 15th Street, with a celebration of life service at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to your local Hope Hospice.
Robert Freeman Riggs
MURPHYSBORO -- Robert F. Riggs, 82, of Glenville, N. Y., formerly of Murphysboro, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, after a short illness. He was born May 26, 1920, to John L. and Estelle (Whitson) Riggs. He attended grade and high school in Murphysboro, where he played football, played in the senior band, was a member of the science and Latin clubs, was on the production staff for several plays and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was also chosen to represent MTHS at "Boys State. " He was a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Engineering. He was a World War II veteran with the rank of lieutenant junior grade. He earned a Bronze Star, three Battle Stars and decorations for serving in Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the Philippines. He was employed by General Electric until he retired. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia Cramer Riggs of Glenville, N. Y. ; one son, Donald Lewis Riggs of Glenville, N. Y. ; two daughters, Barbara Ann Kelley and her husband, Thomas Kelley, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Cynthia Ellen French and her husband, Keith French, of Dalton, Mass. ; four grandchildren, Devi and Logan Kelley and Christopher and Sarah French; one sister, June Truhn of Murphysboro; one brother, Don E. Riggs of Niagara, Wis. ; and one sister-in-law, Dorothy E. Lohr of Madison, Wis. Interment will be at Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery in Saratoga, N. Y., in the spring. Dorothea Evelyn Lemmon
JOHNSTON CITY -- Dorothea Evelyn Lemmon, 84, died at 7:28 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Herrin HospitaL. Services will be at 1 p.m. today, Dec. 28, at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. J. K. Tiffin officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. today, Dec. 28, at the funeral home. Dorothea was born June 24, 1918, in Karnak, the daughter of R. C. "Deacon" and Nellie (Norwood) Harris. She married Everett T. Lemmon on Sept. 16, 1947, who preceded her in death in October 1992 in Champaign. Dorothea was an executive secretary for a law firm in Chicago for 40 years. She attended the Church of God in Herrin. She is survived by one sister, Geneva Bell of Costa Mesa, Calif. ; and one brother, Howard "Barney" Harris of Johnston City. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Floyd Harris.
Imogene Dabbs
PULASKI -- Imogene Dabbs, 71, died at 7:45 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. She was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Portageville, Mo., the daughter of Art and Effie McCann Noland. She married Grady Dabbs. Mrs. Dabbs was a homemaker. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Jerry Dale Dabbs of Mill Creek and Randy Dabbs of McClure; six daughters, Linda Turner of Tamms, Patricia Coleson, Janet Dabbs and Sherry Newell, all of Mill Creek, Cathy Klasner of Anna and Lisa McClellan of Pulaski; 25 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, A. V. Nolan of Rockford and Frankie Nolan of South Carolina; one sister, Wilma Parsons of Rockford; half sisters, Linda Kay and Novella; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Carolyn Ray Dabbs, one grandson, one great-grandson, one brother and two sisters. Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 28, at the Crain Funeral Home in Ullin. Interment will be at St. John's Cemetery in Dongola. Visitation was Friday at the funeral home.
Mary E. Ollis
MARION -- Mary E. Ollis, 80, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Marion, passed away at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in Riverwalk Village Nursing Care Center of Noblesville, Ind. She was born July 13, 1922, in Creal Springs, the daughter of Claude Ellis and Ida (Miles) Alsip. Mary was united in marriage to James Everett Ollis on Aug. 23, 1941, in Jackson, Mo. Together they enjoyed 51 years of marriage until his death came in November 1992. Mary's working career earlier in her lifetime was with Tyndale House Publishing. She later worked for Gospeland Book Store of Marion for many years until she moved to the Indianapolis, Ind., area in 1995, to be near her son. Her church membership was with Marion Third Baptist Church. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Alison Ollis of Indianapolis, Ind. ; four granddaughters, Ann Marie, Deanna, Emily and Amanda Ollis, all of Indianapolis, Ind. ; one brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Jane Alsip of Marion; and many other family members and many friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, an infant daughter, Dixie Lee Ollis on April 19, 1954, two sisters, Ina Bailey and Zola Johns, and one brother, Edward Alsip. Services for Mary E. Ollis will be at 1 p.m. today, Dec. 28, in Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St., Marion, with the Rev. Edward L. Alsip officiating. Interment will follow in McKinney Chapel Cemetery northeast of Goreville. The time of visitation was Friday, Dec. 27, at the funeral home. MCLEANSBORO -- Charles Prince Meade, 81, formerly of McLeansboro, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in Green field, Ind. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in the First General Baptist Church, with the Rev. Billy Duncan officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post 106 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1671. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church.
