Charles Lee McKinney Sr.
MARION -- Charles Lee McKinney Sr., 84, of Marion, passed away at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion. He was born Aug. 20, 1918, south of Marion, in Williamson County, the son of Lloyd Edgbert "L. E. " and Ella Mae (Wilson) McKinney. Charles was united in marriage to Catherine Louise Uttendorfer in St. Louis, Mo., on Aug. 20, 1938. This past August they celebrated their 64 wedding anniversary. Charles answered the call of this nation by serving in the United States Army during the late 1930's until the time of his discharge. When World War II began, Charles enlisted in the United States Navy. After little more than six months of service he was injured aboard ship and spent the next three years recovering in Jefferson Barracks Veterans Hospital in St. Louis. Following his recovery he received an honorable discharge due to his medical disability. Following his retirement from Marion Body Shop in 1965, he continued to do wood working in his cabinet shop. He was a member of the Freedom Freewill Baptist Church located south of Marion. His other affiliation was with American Legion Post No. 2910 of Bloomington. He is survived by his wife, Catherine L. McKinney, of Marion; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Shirley Byington, wife of the late Charles Byington of Farmington, Mo., Jeanette and Vince Pfeil of St. Louis, Mo., and Donna and Dick Cash of Danville; one son, Charles Lee McKinney, Jr. of Marion; eight grandchildren, Ken Byington, Pamela Williams, Cindy Schwer, Tim Pfeil, David Pfeil, Wendy Milligan, Jamey Cash and Dusty Cash; 16 great-grandchildren, Amy Cisneros, Adam Wells, Whitney, Trew and Lake Byington, Ryan, Jason, Nick, Krista and Tony Schwer, Dylan and Mick Pfeil, Brennan and Alex Pfeil and Garrett and Carson Milligan; two great-great-grandchildren, Riley and Sydney Cisneros; and other family members and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Helen Blankenship, Bessie McKinney and Verna McKinney; two brothers, James and Frank McKinney; and one son-in-law, Charles William Byington. The funeral service for Charles Lee McKinney, Sr., will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home of Marion, with Rev. Gilbert Evans officiating. After the service Heyde-Pillow VFW Post No. 1301 of Marion will conclude the service with military honors. Interment will follow at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Military graveside honors will be conducted at the graveside. The time of visitation for family and friends will be from 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made in the form of donations to the Alzheimer's Association. THOMPSONVILLE -- John Henry Bush, Sr., 55, of 20020 State Highway 34, died at 11:53 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at the Franklin HospitaL. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jackson Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Akin, with Pastor Don Wilburn officiating. Burial will be in the Blairsville Cemetery in Carterville. Jessie Louise Harrell Taylor
CARBONDALE -- Jessie Louise Harrell Taylor (Jerry) was born June 20, 1914, to Helen Armintha Jenkins and Jesse Staley Harrell in Urbana. Her father was there on temporary assignment with the Illinois Central Railroad. The family returned to Carbondale shortly thereafter, and she lived there until her death on Dec. 23, 2002. Members of the Jenkins family had played a significant role in early Brownsville and Jackson County history. Later they were instrumental in the founding and development of the Illinois Central Railroad. Mrs. Taylor attended local public schools and Southern Illinois Teachers College (Southern Illinois University). She was a member of Delta Sigma Epsilon (now Alpha Gamma Delta), with which she maintained a lifetime active affiliation. She married William Loren Taylor, of Benton, on June 30, 1934, in St. Louis, Mo. He predeceased her on Jan. 2, 1967. Mr. Taylor was a longtime employee of the Kroger Company and had strong heritage in Williamson and Franklin counties. Known for her keen interest in a wide range of endeavors, she was an active participant in the First United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi, the Antique Study Club, Amateur Garden Club, and Jackson Country Club. She was a strong presence on the golf course for many summers. She mastered the game of bridge early on and many times had "high score. " Her love of design, style and quest for detail were qualities which she drew upon during an active real estate brokerage for several years. She was respected by her peers and was a mentor to many. She will be remembered for her elegance and sense of style under all circumstances. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her younger brother, James William HarrelL. Her survivors include her son, Dr. Richard Loren Taylor and his wife Alice of Corpus Christi, Texas; her daughter, Mrs. Edward J. Wolczak (Sallie) of Carpentersville; one sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wallace (Mary Catherine Harrell) of Carbondale; grandchildren including Richard L. Taylor, Jr., of Dallas, Texas, Robert Wesley Taylor and his wife Lisa of Dallas, Texas, Lance Scott Stahl and his wife Jodi and their daughter Emma Marin of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Jason William Stahl of Anchorage, Alaska; two nephews, Andy Wallace of Carbondale and James Scott Harrell of Knoxville, Tenn. ; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. J. W. Harrell (Wilma) of Knoxville, Tenn. Family graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Carbondale.
