Easter Lillie Salger
STEELEVILLE -- Easter Lillie Salger, 100, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Immanuel Lutheran Church in West Point, with the Rev. Elmer J. Schwartzkopf officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday at Wilson's Funeral Home, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. American Legion Auxiliary services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the church organ or building funds. Mrs. Salger had taught school in Shiloh Hill and Willisville. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and BBK American Legion Auxiliary Post 480, a charter member of Immanuel Lutheran Church Ladies Aid and Randolph County Home Extension, and a former member of Jolly Swingers band with the Steeleville Senior Citizens. She was born Easter Sunday, March 30, 1902, in Sparta to John B. and Mary Jane (Wilson) Pressly. She married Edmund F. Salger of Chester on May 16, 1925. He died July 10, 1979. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Her parents, six brothers and four sisters also preceded her in death.
Bill Steele
MURPHYSBORO -- Bill Steele, 82, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Mr. Steele was born July 23, 1921, the son of Hazel Trail and Fred Steele. He married Alice Marie Nordmeyer in 1949. She preceded him in death Nov. 12, 2001. Mr. Steele was a decorated World War II veteran in the U. S. Army, earning both a Silver and Bronze Battle Star during his tour in Africa. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, and a drummer in the drum and bugle corps. Mr. Steele is survived by seven children, Jon B. Nail of Overland Park, Kan., Jody L. Steele of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Jamie S. Steele of Carbondale, Jac P. Steele-Lee of Chicago and Judy K. Steele of Edwardsville; and 10 grandchildren, Rebekka Collins of Memphis, Tenn., Carrie Williams of New Jersey, Amy Williams of Columbia, Mo., Allison Volner of Murphysboro, Geoff and Charlie Steele of Downers Grove, Travis Steele of New Mexico, Shane and Jared Dolle of Hazelwood, Mo., and Vincent Zavier Lee of Chicago. Mr. Steele was a carpenter and draftsman by trade, and worked for many years at Southern Illinois University. His body has been cremated. Pettett Funeral Home is in charge of his services. Roy Nance
MURPHYSBORO -- Roy Nance, 79, died at 3:39 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, in St. Joseph Memorial HospitaL. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Pettett Funeral Home, with Aaron Vorpagel officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be until 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation. Mr. Nance had been a pressman at Lustour for 23 years, and ran The Trading Post for 17 years. He was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Murphysboro to Levi and Mary (Hall) Nance. He married Roberta Clover on June 22, 1963, in Murphysboro. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Robert Georgeff of Murphysboro; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles Ray and Melody Nance of Murphysboro; four grandchildren, Joe Swafford, Beau Levi Nance and Carson Nance, all of Murphysboro, and Charles Nance Jr. of Du Quoin; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Bessie Allison of Anna; and several nieces and nephews. His parents, three brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death.
Annetta Lawson
HERRIN -- Annetta Lawson, 47, passed away at her residence at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today, Dec. 24, in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Murle Jack officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home. She was born Oct. 10, 1954, to William and Alma (Shadowens) Nicholson. She married James Lawson, and he passed away in 1992. Annetta was a Protestant. She is survived by a brother, Jerry Nicholson of Marion; brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Marlene Nicholson of Marion; sister, Jill Monson of E. Chicago, Ind. ; sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and William Taylor of Spillertown; and sister and brother-in-law, Angie and Richard Tuthill of Vergennes. Her husband, parents, and brother, Edward Nicholson preceded her in death in 1992.
Donald D. Durham Sr.
MARION -- Donald D. Durham Sr., 81, passed away at 8:00 AM, Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at his residence. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, at Freedom Cemetery, south of Marion. There will be no visitation. Blue Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Military rites will be held at the cemetery by Marion VFW Post 1301. O. Box 411, Marion, Ill., 62959. Mr. Durham was born on May 15, 1921, in Marion, Illinois to Hosea and Alma (Blumenstock) Durham. He was married to Grace Bratten, Verba Pulley and Margaret Wilder. Survivors include son, Donald D. Durham, Jr. of Marion; six daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna Sue Ozment of Creal Springs, Nadra and Lee Mangrum and Yvonne "Delores" and Jerry Heal all of Marion, Cheryle Ann Barnett of Cambria, Judith Durham of Johnston City, and Leslie Renee Snyman of Denver, Colorado; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren; and six great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; second wife, Verba Pulley; third wife, Margaret Wilder; two brothers; one sister; and two grandchildren. Mr. Durham worked as a truck driver. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the Marion Eagles, VFW in Phoenix, Arizona, American Legion in Phoenix, Arizona, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Arizona Anglers.
William Perry 'Bill' Vancil
AVA -- William Perry "Bill" Vancil, 62, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Keith Tingle officiating. Visitation will be from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Mr. Vancil was a retired truck driver from Leggett-Platt in Nicholasville, Ky. He was born Saturday, April 20, 1940, in Ava to Murray A. and Kathryn Virginia (Wilson) VanciL. He was married Charlene Stamper on Nov. 28, 1981, in Jellico, Tenn. She survives. Other survivors include six children, Richard and Eric Vancil, both of Springfield, Mo., Michelle Vancil of Austin, Texas, Adam Vancil of Anaheim, Calif., Larry Ledford of East Peoria, and Genny Vancil of Cutler; four grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Weathers of Green ville; four brothers, Glen and Jack Vancil, both of Ava, Dan Vancil of Marietta, Ga., and Robert Vancil of Gilbert, Ariz. His parents preceded him in death.
Leonard Sanders Sr.
ELKVILLE -- Leonard Sanders Sr., 74, died at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, in Herrin HospitaL. Private family services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel, with the Revs. Leon Kelly and Leonard Sanders Jr. officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Mr. Sanders owned Elkville Senior Billiards and was a retired coal miner. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Hallidayboro. He was born Feb. 13, 1928, in Du Quoin to Bennie and Myrtle (Rond) Sanders. He married Ina Marie Gude on April 4, 1944, in Du Quoin. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, the Rev. Leonard E. Sanders Jr. of Old Du Quoin and Gerald L. Sanders Sr. of Elkville; two daughters, Lindell Kelly of Du Quoin and Rosaline Carter of Urbana; one brother, Bennie, of Columbia, Mo. ; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His parents and one sister, Carrie Scott, preceded him in death.
Marie L. Warren
ELKVILLE -- Marie L. Warren, 82, passed away at 2 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Fairview Nursing Center in Du Quoin. Marie was a homemaker, and a member of Elkville United Methodist Church. She was secretary and treasurer of the church for many years. She was also a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Home Extension, and a trustee of Rick Warren Memorial Library Board. She was born July 15, 1920, in Devonshire, England, the daughter of James and Emily (Mee) Clipson. She married Perry C. Warren on May 24, 1944, at Kattering, England, and he survives. She is survived by her husband, of Elkville, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Richard C. Warren on July 1, 1964. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. James Barnett officiating. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the White County Memorial Gardens at Carmi. Friends may make memorials to Rick Warren Memorial Library or Elkville United Methodist Church, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Lacine McGuire
CREAL SPRINGS -- Lacine McGuire,76, passed away at 9:40 p.m. Dec. 21, 2002, at her sister's home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Lacine was born June 4, 1926, in Marion to Fred and Laura Jane (Green walt) Verner. She married James Audie McGuire in Marion on March 16, 1943. He passed away Sept. 1, 1990. She attended Fairview Baptist Church. Survivors include son, Rusty McGuire of Creal Springs; son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Phyllis McGuire of Creal Springs; daughter and son-in-law, Loudine and Rick Newton of Goreville; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, Brother Harvey Smothers of Goreville, and her twin sister, Lucille Sabatino, of Marion. Her parents, Daughter Jane Gothard; sister, Florence Leest; and two brothers, Gilbert and Ralph Verner preceded her in death.
