Julia Houghland
CARBONDALE -- Julia "Judy" Elizabeth Houghland died at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at her residence. She was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Carbondale, the daughter of Lenard and Lena (Grammer) Turner. She married Harold D. Arnold March 7, 1942. Harold died January 23, 1962. She then married Leo G. Houghland Aug. 6, 1969. Leo died January 18, 1977. Mrs. Houghland is survived by three children, daughter Donna Bristow of Green ville and twins Larry Arnold of Vernon Hills and Barbara Willett and her husband Jerry of Murphysboro; six grandchildren, Pamela Rockey and her husband Kevin of Franklin, Ind., Karen Bristow of Green ville, Amy Grimes and her husband Tony of St. Louis, Mo., Jaime Hendricks and Adam Hendricks of Murphysboro and Jennifer Arnold of Vernon Hills; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jonah and Josiah Rockey; one step-daughter, Lynda Kletter of Canoga Park, Calif. ; four step-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill Turner of Nashville, Tenn. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Sue Arnold, in infancy; her parents; a brother, Harold Turner; and one stepson, Dale Houghland. Mrs. Houghland was a secretary for the Baptist Book Store in Carbondale and the bursar's office at Southern Illinois University. Following her retirement from SIU, she worked at the Information Center at the University MalL. She was a graduate of University High School in Carbondale and a member of University Baptist Church, where she was active in the choir and women's missions. She also sang with the Singing Illinoisians Choir, sponsored by the Illinois Baptist State Association. She was also a volunteer at Carbondale Memorial HospitaL. An avid quilter, she enjoyed making quilts for her family. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at the University Baptist Church, with Rev. Sam Foskey officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. The visitation will be from noon until the hour of services Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the University Baptist Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois. Her sweet smile and loving friendship will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Huffman-Harker Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Lester 'Les' Rinne
CHESTER -- Lester "Les" Rinne, 69, died at 3:42 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was born to the late Edwin and Elda (Brammer Duensing) Rinne on July 12, 1933, in Steeleville. He married Dorothy Koch on May 3, 1953 in Steeleville. He was a retired Officer from the Menard Correctional Center in Chester. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, the American Legion Post 487 in Chester, and an ASCFME retiree. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Rinne of Chester; one daughter, Diane King of Peoria; one son, Ed (Deb) Rinne of Peoria; a mother-in-law, Marie Koch of Steeleville; a brother-in-law, Jack (Jane) Perzia of St. Louis; and three grandchildren, William King, Jr., Katherine King, and Christopher Rinne. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, LaVern Perzia. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, with Rev. Mark Willig and Martin Springer officiating. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery in Steeleville. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday a the Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the St. John Lutheran Church in Chester.

Helen R. Dennis
DU QUOIN -- Helen R. Dennis, 85, passed away at 7 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin. Helen was a homemaker and had worked at the Dennis Brothers Grocery Store for many years and at the Dooley Grocery Store for several years. She was a member and active in the activities of the Du Quoin Gospel Assembly Church. She was a member of the Marshall Browning Hospital Auxiliary. Helen was born June 14, 1917, at Clifford, the daughter of Lee and Nola (Gohlier) Spears. She was married to Oliver Dennis for thirty-nine years and he preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1974. She is survived by a daughter, Diana Dudas and husband Don of Valparaiso, Fla. ; three grandsons, David A. Dudas and wife Kristine of Mesa, Ariz., Dan Dennis and wife Patricia of Humble, Texas, Roger Dennis and wife Melissa of Du Quoin; five great-grandchildren, David R. Dudas of Mesa, Ariz., Evan and Tyler Dennis of Humble, Texas, Morgan and Madison Dennis of Du Quoin; one brother, Dick Spears and wife Betty of Marion; brother-in-law, Chuck Dennis and wife Ruby of Du Quoin; sisters-in-law, Luella Spears of Marissa, Kathryn Pair of West Frankfort, Amanda Hamburger and husband Wayne of Eldorado; special caregiver, Becky Carrothers of Du Quoin; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, James Dennis; two brothers, Harry and Bill Spears; two sisters, Ruth Hawk and Mary Bell Caviness. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at the Gospel Assembly Church in Du Quoin, with Rev. Dennis Fitzsimmons officiating. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery at Du Quoin. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church on Tuesday. Friends may make memorials to the Gospel Assembly Church of Du Quoin and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Bonnie Lee Clark
WEST FRANKFORT -- Bonnie Lee Clark, 77, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., formerly of West Frankfort, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at her residence. She was born Oct. 10, 1925 in West Frankfort, to Obadiah Rich and Cleo (Rice) Rich. She married Edward Ervin Clark and he preceded her in death in 1985. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Choate and husband Robert of Carbondale, Carol Kutscher and husband Donald of Cape Girardeau, Mo. ; three sons, Charles E. Clark and wife Aris of Opdyke, Dennis Clark and wife Janet of Benton, and Michael Clark of Thompsonville; and a special grandson Dennis Clark II and wife Becky of Benton. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Burl Rich and Jerry Rich, both of West Frankfort; four sisters, June Rogers of Johnston City, Shirley Hammond of Ashton, Gladys Puckett and Mary Riley, both of Elgin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and six brothers, Charlie, Earl Dean, Len and Obie Rich, Jim Goad, and an infant brother, EarL. She was a member of the Logan Church of God and had worked at Smoler's in Herrin in the pressing department. Funeral services for Bonnie Lee Clark will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with Rev. Mark Minor officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellow Cemetery in Benton. Friends of the Clark family may call after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Leonard Sanders
ELKVILLE -- Leonard Sanders, 74, died at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Herrin HospitaL. Arrangements are incomplete at the Neal-McClure Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Bill Steele
MURPHYSBORO -- Bill Steele, 82, passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, in the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Marion. Mr. Steele was born July 23, 1921, the son of Hazel Trail and Fred Steele. He married Alice Marie Nordmeyer in 1949. She preceded him in death on Nov. 12, 2001. A military burial will be held at a later date at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Mr. Steele was a decorated World War II Veteran in the US Army earning both a Silver and Bronze battle star during his tour of Africa. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and was a drummer in the drum and bugle corps. Mr. Steele is survived by seven children, Jon B. Nail of Overland Park, Kan., Jody L. Steele of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Jamie S. Steele of Carbondale, Jac P. Steele of Downers Grove, Jory A. Bamvakais of Hazelwood, Mo., Jerry E. Steele-Lee of Chicago., and Judy K. Steele of Edwardsville; and ten grandchildren, Rebekka Collins of Memphis, Tenn. Carrie Williams of New Jersey, Amy Williams of Columbia, Mo., Allison Volner of Murphysboro, Geoff and Charles Steele of Downers Grove, Travis Steele of New Mexico, Shane and Jared Dolle of Hazelwood, Mo., and Vincent Xavier Lee of Chicago. Mr. Steele was a carpenter and a draftsman by trade and worked for many years at Southern Illinois University. Memorial contributions may be made to The Haven, 10289 Haven Lane, Carbondale, IL 62901. His body has been cremated. Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie Pearl Abney
MARION -- Nellie Pearl Abney, 102, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Fountain Nursing Home in Marion. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, with Dr. Joey Brent officiating. Burial will follow the services. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Mitchell-Hughes funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Nellie was born in Williamson County on April 23, 1900 to Filo and Melvina (Allen) Turner. She married Archie Abney in Union City, Tenn. He preceded her in death on May 17, 1959. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Marion, and was in the Loyalty Sunday school Class. She was also a 50-year member of LeRoy A #350 Order or Eastern Star and White Shrine. She was a member of Marion Senior Citizens, and Mario Memorial Auxiliary. Survivors include nephews, Robert Turner of Belleville and Marshall Turner of Eddyville, Ky. ; niece, Marilyn Childers of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Orel, Howard, and Arley Turner; niece, Carolyn Sandlin; and nephew Charles Turner.

William Perry 'Bill' Vancil
AVA -- William Perry "Bill" Vancil, 62, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at the St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. He was born Saturday, April 20, 1940 to Murray A. Vancil and Kathryn Virginia Wilson Vancil in Ava. He was married to Charlene Stamper on Nov. 28, 1981, in Jellico, Tenn. He is survived by his wife Charlene of Ava; children, Richard Vancil of Springfield, Mo., Michelle Vancil of Austin, Texas, Eric Vancil of Springfield, Mo., Adam Vancil of Anaheim, CaliF. Larry Ledford of East Peoria, Genny Vancil of Cutler; four grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Weathers of Green ville; four brothers, Glen Vancil of Ava, Jack Vancil of Ava, Dan Vancil of Marietta, Ga., and Robert Vancil of Gilbert, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a retired truck driver from Letter-Platt in Nicholasville, Ky. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with Rev. Keith Tingle officiating. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Monday and from 7:30 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Rosa Lee Girtman
GOREVILLE -- Rosa Lee Girtman, 84, passed away at 4:32 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Herrin HospitaL. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at the Blue Funeral Home in Goreville, with Reverend L. D. Jolly officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Monday, December 23, 2002 at the funeral home. Burial will be Busby Cemetery in Goreville. Ms. Girtman was born on November 1, 1918 in Goreville, to William Orb and Eliza Jane (Perry) Girtman. Survivors include sister, Tennie Ann Girtman of Goreville; nephew, Leon and Carolyn Craig of Goreville; sister-in-law, Margaret Girtman of Marion; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Sibyl Bramlet of HarrisburG. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Elza Mae Craig; and two brothers, Charles and John Girtman. Ms. Girtman was a member of the Gospel Assembly Church in Eldorado. She was a homemaker.

Ruby Kerley
CARBONDALE -- Ruby Kerley, 95, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at her home. She was born Sept. 24, 1907, in Simpson, to Gilbert C. and Orpha Jane (Cox) Kerley. She received her B. Ed. degree from Southern Illinois University in 1929, her B. S. degree in library science from the University of Illinois in 1933 and her M. A. degree in library science from the University of Michigan in 1941. Ms. Kerley was a retired librarian at SIUC. She is survived by numerous cousins, including Loretta and John Travelstead of Carbondale, Norma Durham of Springfield, Sue Cox of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and Blanche Cox of Boca Raton, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Cleta Worley. Graveside committal services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Oakland Cemetery. Huffman-Harker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roy Nance
MURPHYSOBORO -- Roy Nance, 79, died at 3:39 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with Aaron Vorpagel officiating. Burial will be in the Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and until the hour of service Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation.
