Donald Durham Sr.
MARION -- Donald Durham, Sr., 81, died at 8 a.m. Sunday Dec. 22, 2002, at his home. Arrangements are incomplete at the Blue Funeral Home in Marion.

Virgil Sullivan
GOLCONDA -- Virgil Sullivan, 90, formerly of the Simpson Community, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday at Pope County Care in Golconda. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Aly Funeral Home in Golconda, with the Rev. Phillip Poe officiating. Burial will be in the Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with a Masonic service at 8 p.m.

William Tanner
HARRISBURG -- William Eugene Tanner, 80, died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at the VA Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills, with the Rev. Kendall Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Annetta Lawson
HERRIN -- Annetta Lawson 47, died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at her residence. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mitchell-Hughes funeral home in Marion, with the Rev. Murle Jack officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at from 9 to 10 a.m. service at the funeral home.

Lacine McGuire
CREAL SPRINGS -- Lacine McGuire, 76, died at 9:40 p.m. Dec. 21, 2002, at her sisters home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Isola Jackson
CARBONDALE -- Isola Jackson, 77, died at 6:27 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro. Arrangements are incomplete at Jackson Funeral Home in Carbondale.

Easter Salger
STEELEVILLE -- Easter L. Salger, 100, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Chester. Arrangements are incomplete at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville.

Julia Houghland
CARBONDALE -- Julia "Judy" Elizabeth Houghland died at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at her residence. She was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Carbondale, the daughter of Lenard and Lena (Grammer) Turner. She married Harold D. Arnold March 7, 1942. Harold died January 23, 1962. She then married Leo G. Houghland Aug. 6, 1969. Leo died January 18, 1977. Mrs. Houghland is survived by three children, daughter Donna Bristow of Green ville and twins Larry Arnold of Vernon Hills and Barbara Willett and her husband Jerry of Murphysboro; six grandchildren, Pamela Rockey and her husband Kevin of Franklin, Ind., Karen Bristow of Green ville, Amy Grimes and her husband Tony of St. Louis, Mo., Jaime Hendricks and Adam Hendricks of Murphysboro and Jennifer Arnold of Vernon Hills; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jonah and Josiah Rockey; one step-daughter, Lynda Kletter of Canoga Park, Calif. ; four step-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill Turner of Nashville, Tenn. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Sue Arnold, in infancy; her parents; a brother, Harold Turner; and one stepson, Dale Houghland. Mrs. Houghland was a secretary for the Baptist Book Store in Carbondale and the bursar's office at Southern Illinois University. Following her retirement from SIU, she worked at the Information Center at the University MalL. She was a graduate of University High School in Carbondale and a member of University Baptist Church, where she was active in the choir and women's missions. She also sang with the Singing Illinoisians Choir, sponsored by the Illinois Baptist State Association. She was also a volunteer at Carbondale Memorial HospitaL. An avid quilter, she enjoyed making quilts for her family. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at the University Baptist Church, with Rev. Sam Foskey officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. The visitation will be from noon until the hour of services Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the University Baptist Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois. Her sweet smile and loving friendship will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Huffman-Harker Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Kerley
CARBONDALE -- Ruby Kerley, 95, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at her home. She was born Sept. 24, 1907, in Simpson, to Gilbert C. and Orpha Jane (Cox) Kerley. She received her B. Ed. degree from Southern Illinois University in 1929, her B. S. degree in library science from the University of Illinois in 1933 and her M. A. degree in library science from the University of Michigan in 1941. Ms. Kerley was a retired librarian at SIUC. She is survived by numerous cousins, including Loretta and John Travelstead of Carbondale, Norma Durham of Springfield, Sue Cox of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and Blanche Cox of Boca Raton, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Cleta Worley. Graveside committal services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Oakland Cemetery. Huffman-Harker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

David Parks
DE SOTO -- David Parks, 56, passed away at 8:50 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale, with Reverends John Adams and Dennis Fager officiating. Interment will be at De Soto Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today, Sunday, Dec. 22, at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or De Soto School Education Foundation, Inc. and will be accepted by the funeral home. David was born Aug. 9, 1946, in Marion, to George and Cynthia (Jolly) Parks. He married Paula Crow on Dec. 15, 1967, at De Soto. Survivors include his wife, Paula Parks of De Soto; one daughter and son-in-law, Paige and Ryan Lappe of Herrin; one son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Connie Parks of De Soto; two grandchildren, Cory Kristoff and Rachel Lappe; two brothers, Theodore (Mary Jane) Parks of Marion and Russell Dean Parks of Champaign; six sisters, Venida (Lloyd) McKinnies of De Soto, Wilma Williams, Thelma (Dean) Pulley and Mary Kathryn (Bob) Crews, all of Carbondale, Betty (Eddie) Miller of Cambria and Sarah Parks of Marion; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Frank and Ramona Crow of De Soto; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Donna and BJ Boros and Michaella and Rod Rich, all of De Soto; and many special nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. David was a member of De Soto United Methodist Church and UMWA Local 1392 and was a past member of De Soto Grade School Board of Education and Village of De Soto Board of Trustees. He honorably served his country with the U. S. Navy with Company 63-520 on the USS America. In 1996 he retired from Arch Coal, Inc. where he was employed as a mechanic. Mr. Parks had also been employed by West Bus Service as a school bus driver and mechanic for many years. David loved people and touched many lives with his kindness and love for alL. He will be greatly missed. The world is a better place because of David Parks.

Eva Gersbacher
BENTON -- Eva Ruth Gersbacher, 96, died at 1:20 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at the Casey Care Center in Mount Vernon. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Jack Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation is 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Altha H. Brown
PITTSBURG -- Altha H. Brown, 84, passed away at 2:47 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Marion Memorial HospitaL. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today, Sunday, Dec. 22, at Mitchell- Hughes funeral home in Marion. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Rev. Frankie Pierce, Rev. Cecil Atchison and Rev. Edward Handkins will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home. Altha was born March 31, 1918, in Williamson County, to William R. and Flossie (Scobey) Handkins. She married William V. "Bill" Brown Aug. 5, 1939, in Marion, Ky. He preceded her in death July 16, 2002. She attended nursing school, worked in real estate, and owned an antique shop. She was also a secretary for her husband Bill when he served as Williamson County Treasurer. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Daughters of 1812 and Daughters of the American Revolution, and volunteered at Marion Memorial Hospital for many years. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Martha Ann Richardson of Marion, Mary Katherine "Kay" and Larry Woodson of Pittsburg and Admiral Nancy E. Brown and Pete Hesser of Annandale, Va. ; and three grandchildren, Deborah A. Powers, Patricia (Patty) Rohrschneider and William Lee Richardson. Altha was the last of seven children. Brothers and sisters preceding her in death include Eugene Handkins, Alva Handkins, Mabel Ozment, Marie Williams, Wilma Mifflin and Bernie Mae Handkins. She was also preceded by her parents; her husband; and one son, Raymond William Brown.

Dennis Dimitroff
DU QUOIN -- Dennis Wayne Dimitroff, 22, died at 10:20 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Whittington officiating. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
