Helen R. Dennis
DU QUOIN -- Helen R. Dennis, 85, passed away at 7 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin. Helen was a homemaker and had worked at the Dennis Brothers Grocery Store for many years, and at the Dooley Grocery Store for several years. She was a member and was active in the activities of the Du Quoin Gospel Assembly Church. She was a member of the Marshall Browning Hospital Auxiliary. Helen was born June 14, 1917, at Clifford, the daughter of Lee and Nola (Golliher) Speers. She was married to Oliver Dennis for 39 years, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1974. She is survived by a daughter, Diana Dudas and her husband Don of Valparaiso, Fla. ; three grandsons, David A. Dudas and his wife Kristine of Mesa, Ariz., Dan Dennis and his wife Patricia of Humble, Texas, and Roger Dennis and his wife Melissa of Du Quoin; five great-grandchildren, David R. Dudas of Mesa, Ariz., Evan and Tyler Dennis of Humble, Texas, and Morgan and Madison Dennis of Du Quoin; one brother, Dick Speers and his wife Betty of Marion; one sister-in-law, Luella Speers of Marrisa; a special caregiver, Becky Carrothers of Du Quoin; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, James Dennis; two brothers, Harry and Bill Speers; and two sisters, Ruth Hawk and Mary Bell Caviness. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, at the Gospel Assembly Church in Du Quoin, with Rev. Dennis Fitzsimmons officiating. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the church. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery at Du Quoin. Memorials may be made to the Gospel Assembly Church of Du Quoin and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Thomas Homer Mofield
CARBONDALE -- Thomas Homer Mofield, 94, died at 7:40 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Marion Memorial HospitaL. He was born Jan. 25, 1908, in Saline County, to Lewis and Amy (Lasswell) Mofield. He married Winifred Harker Hewitt on Oct. 18, 1933, in Carbondale. She passed away on March 20, 1993. Mr. Mofield owned and operated Mofield's Clothing Store until his retirement in 1963. He was also a former Director and Chairman of the Board at First National Bank in Carbondale. He is survived by three daughters, Sidney Ann Sandrin and Winifred Harker Boyd, both of Cincinnati, and Martha Campbell and her husband Thomas of Carbondale; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Private graveside committal services will be Tuesday, Dec. 24, at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at the Huffman-Harker Funeral Home. Memorials may made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the American Cancer Society.
Jolene Svoboda
CRAB ORCHARD -- Jolene (Jo) Marie Svoboda, 43, of Crab Orchard, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at her home in Crab Orchard. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, Sunday, Dec. 22, at Riggin- Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Carol Gericke and Brother Wayne Emery. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Shed Cemetery in Crab Orchard. Visitation was Saturday at the funeral home. Jolene was born on Dec. 28, 1958, in Kankakee, to George L. and Imogene (McCawley) Barker. She married Kevin (Bone) Svoboda on June 25, 1977, in Joliet. She is survived by her husband, Kevin (Bone) Svoboda of Crab Orchard; one daughter and son-in-law, Mardean and John Roach of Crab Orchard; one son, Landon Svoboda at home; one sister and brother in-law, Danell Lynn and Vern Lemasters of Marion; one brother, George C. Barker of Crab Orchard; one grandson, Corbin Kelton of Crab Orchard; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roy and Dorothy Svoboda of North Riverside. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Shayla Marie, in 1988; and one sister, Mardean Barker, in 1963. Jolene was a homemaker and ran her own cleaning service. She worked at the Crab Orchard Library for many years. She attended the Cedar Grove Methodist Church, where she served as chairperson of the CARE committee. She also taught pre-school Sunday school at the church and was active in their Vacation Bible SchooL. Jolene never met a stranger. Her life was devoted to serving the Lord and her family. She enjoyed spending time at Crab Orchard Lake with her family and lovingly caring for her animals. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Jessie Lee Lingle
MARION -- Jessie Lee Lingle, 87, died at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at the Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna. Jessie was born March 20, 1915, in Peabody, Tenn., to Ed and Annie (Hampsy) Hyden. She married Alma Lingle on July 24, 1934, in HarrisburG. He preceded her in death on March 23, 1989. She was retired, having worked at the University of Chicago as a dietitian for many years. She was a member of the Scottsboro Church of God. She was also involved with the Daughters of Pythias. Survivors include one son, Harvey E. Lingle of Newburgh, Wis. ; three daughters, Reeta Dee Hunt of San Diego, Calif., Brenda Sue Polacek and her husband Tony of Hortonville, Wis., and Phyllis Jean McGuire and her husband Roy of Creal Springs; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Hyden and his wife Margie of Alton; four sisters, Peggy Heath and her husband Richard of Johnston City, Connie Lukowski and her husband Arthur of Dyer, Ind., Nadine Murrah of Herrin and Betty Murrah and her husband Bill of Atlanta, Ga. ; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hyden of Johnston City and Evelyn Hyden of Carbondale; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alma Lingle; three brothers, Ralph, Luther and Tom Hyden; and one sister, Mary Hyden. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, with Rev. Wayne Hosmon officiating. Entombment will follow at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Kenneth R. Foster
WEST FRANKFORT -- Kenneth R. Foster , 54, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Carbondale Memorial HospitaL. Mr. Foster was born Nov. 22, 1948, in Benton, to Carl Foster and Joanna (McGuire) Foster . He married Crystal L. Duncan on Aug. 25, 2001, in West Frankfort. He is survived by his wife, Crystal; four sons, Ben Foster and his wife Jennifer of Naperville, Bobby Foster and his wife Jamie of West Frankfort, Barry Foster of West Frankfort and Billy Foster of Carbondale; one brother, David Foster of Benton; and two grandchildren, Kenny and Robby Foster . He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Shelia Blades. Kenneth was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. He was a former West Frankfort School Board member, and was very active in working with the youth of West Frankfort. He was presently employed at John A. Logan College as a police officer, was a former West Frankfort police officer for 21 years, and was a U. S. Army veteran. Funeral services for Mr. Foster will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints on south 37 in West Frankfort, with Bishop Lewis Russell officiating. Burial will be in the Tower Heights Cemetery in West Frankfort. Friends of the Foster family may call after 5 p.m. Monday to the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, and after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Stephen N. Harland
SESSER -- Stephen N. Harland, 83, died at 5:20 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at St. Joseph's Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. He was born Jan. 7, 1919, in Sesser, to Fred Harland and Myrtle Ann Pierce. He married Mary Frances Rooney, who preceded him in death on Oct. 19, 1998. He was a retired civil engineer. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was the past president of Ashland Oil Retirees Association, a member of the Retired Officers Association, and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Valier. He is survived by four children, Steve J. Harland of Sesser, Frederick Harland of Sonoma, Calif., William Frances Harland of Las Vegas, Nev., and Barbara Ann Harland of Sonoma, Calif. ; five grandchildren; and one sister, Faye Morgando of Tamaroa. He was preceded in death by two brothers. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with Father Stephen Poole officiating. Interment will be in St. Andrews Catholic Cemetery. The body will lie in state after 6 p.m. today, Sunday, Dec. 22, at the funeral home, and Masonic services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today.
Thelma R. Ridlen
MARION -- Thelma R. Ridlen, 82, died at 2:05 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at the Enfield Health Care Center. Thelma was born May 19, 1920, at Stonefort, to Norman and Orphie (Horn) Turner. She first married Robert Schneider, who preceded her in death. She later married Fred Ridlen on Sept. 22, 1972, in Williamson County. Fred survives. Thelma was retired, having worked in the meat department for many years at Mack's Big Star in Marion. She was a member of the Third Baptist Church in Marion. Survivors include her husband, Fred Ridlen of Marion; one daughter, Glenna Thompson and her husband Roger of McLeansboro; one son, Leston Ridlen and his wife Nelda of Marion; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glenn Turner of Harrisburg and Ray Turner and his wife Earlene of Pittsburg; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; and one brother, Lige Turner. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy, with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery for a time of visitation with the family. Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be given to the Enfield Health Care Center.
Paul Robert Oyler
MARISSA -- Paul Robert Oyler, 75, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at his residence in Marissa. He was born March 12, 1927, in East St. Louis, to Paul E. Oyler and Effie (Coleman) Oyler. He married Celestina Micheletto on April 3, 1948, in Paducah, Ky., and she preceded him in death on June 13, 2001. He was a retired carpenter. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 172 in Marissa and Carpenters Local 169 in East St. Louis, and was a former member of Marissa School Board, KWD, and Marissa Rec Area Board. He is survived by two sons, Alan (Susan) Oyler of Marissa and Les (Brenda) Oyler of Sparta; one grandson, Bryce (Pritchette) Jerrell; two granddaughters, Melissa (Tim) Curry and Gina Oyler; and one great-grandson, Langdon JerrelL. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Edward Oyler and Roy Oyler; and one sister, Virginia Bodeker. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home, with Rev. Donald Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Marissa Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today, Sunday, Dec. 22, and from 9-11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kathy Schubert Scholarship Fund.
