MURPHYSBORO -- James A. "Bud" Porter, 71, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel. Burial with military rites will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

William Elliott
JOHNSTON CITY -- William L. "Bill" Elliott, 77, of Johnston City, died at 10:59 p.m. Wednesday April 9, 2003, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Revs. Shelly E. Forrest and Marion Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by the Marion Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice. William was born on May 19, 1925, in West Frankfort, the son of Luther and Florence (Meadows) Elliott. He married Jeanette Stallings on September 27, 1945, in Napa, Calif., and she survives. Bill was a self-employed milk distributor and had owned and operated Bill Elliott's Market. He was a former Prudential Insurance agent. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He served in a communications organization known as OP2OG, which was given a Navy Citation after the war for its work in intercepting and decoding enemy radio messages. He was one of the founding members of the Johnston City Little League Program. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Johnston City. He is survived by three children and their spouses, Karen and Jerry Cadle of Marion, Tracy Elliott of Johnston City, Dick and Vickilyn Elliott of West Frankfort; one son-in-law, Kenneth Lewis of Lake of Egypt; six grandchildren and their spouses, Todd and Michelle Thomas of Carterville, Eric and Jennifer Elliott of West Frankfort, Ty Elliott of Marion, Patrick Elliott of Los Angeles, Ryan Lewis of Carterville, Kristen Lewis of Herrin; three great grandchildren, Jacob Elliott, Lexilyn Elliott, and Natalie Lewis; one sister, Mabel King of Lexington, Ky. ; four brothers-in-law and their wives, Troy and Janet Stallings of Johnston City, Homer and Rose Stallings of Johnston City, Bob and Joyce Stallings of Salem, Ray and Marieta Stallings of Fairfield; one sister-in-law and her husband, Joy and Jack Helfrich of Johnston City; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and two life-long friends, Tom Oster of Johnston City and Robert Horner of Okla. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Patricia Ann Lewis in 1996; two sisters, Hazel Hafeli and Florence Morgan; and one infant brother, Sherman Elliott. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed life to the fullest.

PINCKNEYVILLE -- Halean M. Logan, 88, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Philadelphia Baptist Church in Du Quoin, with the Rev. Thad Woodside officiating. Burial will be in Holt's Prairie Cemetery in Pinckneyville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, then from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. SIMPSON -- Earl Williamson, 84, died at 11:35 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Shirley M. Easton
MURPHYSBORO -- Shirley M. Easton, age 65, passed away at 7:28 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2003, in her Gorham home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2003, in Pettett Funeral Home with the Revs. Floyd Bennett and Charles Allen officiating. Burial will be in Glenn Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and until 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Glenn Cemetery, Crain Baptist Church, Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. or ALS Foundation. She was born on Jan. 18, 1938, in Murphysboro to William James Tanner and Ethel (Crowell) Tanner. She later married Robert Easton on Nov. 30, 1984, at the Fairview Christian Church. Shirley was a member of the Crain Baptist Church, where she had been a Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of the Gideons and the SIU Alumni Association. She had played open class softball and was a very avid sports fan. She had worked at Montgomery Wards, and for approximately fifteen years she worked for the Murphysboro School District No. 186 Transportation Service, where she was a school bus driver. She then worked for SIU as a groundskeeper. Shirley touched many lives and she deeply cared for those that she came in contact with, wherever she worked. Survivors include her husband Robert Easton; three children and their spouses, Robert L. and Karen Waldron, Darryl and Chandra Waldron, and Karen and John Pierson, all of Murphysboro; four step-children, Cindy Shadowens and her husband, Ron Shadowens, Steve and Rhonda Easton, Pam Easton, and David Easton and his wife, Teresa, all of Murphysboro;seven grandchildren, Joshua Cunningham, Jamie Walker, Matthew Waldron, Heather Waldron, Lindsey Waldron, Tiffany Pierson, and Emily Pierson;six step grandchildren, Nicki Zimmerman, Andrea Boedeker, Bryan Easton, David Easton, Jr., Josh Easton, and Zachary Easton; two great grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Tanner, and her parents.
Clifton Deming
BENTON -- Clifton "Cliff" L. Deming, 85, died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, in the Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. Mr. Deming was born Nov. 6, 1917 in Carterville. He was the devoted husband of Leora "Toby" (Smith) Deming, and the wonderful father of George Deming. Their 61st wedding anniversary was Sunday, April 6. A sister-in-law, Mary E. Taylor also survives. He was a graduate of Benton Community High School and University of Illinois. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before his retirement in Feb. 1963. He was then a civil service employee of the Joliet and Rock Island Arsenals, retiring in May 1979. He was a lifetime member of the Elks. He enjoyed his friends and fellow coffee drinkers at the "Liars Club". He had a passion for reading and crossword puzzles. He could speak knowledgeably on many subjects. A humble person, he was known for his generosity and compassion. He enjoyed his military stations and overseas travel. HE was preceded in death by his father, Rosco Deming; mother, Zella Overton; brother, Clyde Deming; and stepbrother, W. Gene Overton. Arthur Hodges
TAMMS -- Arthur L. Hodges, 82, died at 4:40 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, in the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Mr. Hodges was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Cairo, son of the late Liston Hodges and Ginnie (Crippen) Hodges. Mr. Hodges was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Cairo, an Army veteran of World War II and a retired baliff for the Alexander County Court House in Cairo. Mr. Hodges was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie Fry and two grandsons, Danny, Jr and Clinton Matthew Hood. Mr. Hodges married Viola (Randolph) on Oct. 26, 1957 in Unity. Survivors include his wife, Viola Hodges of Tamms; three sons, Gene Arthur Hodges of Jackson, Mo., David Hodges of Cairo and Robert Hodges of Villa Ridge; a daughter, Kathy Hood of Cairo; three sisters, the Rev. Wilma Williams of Cairo, Rossie Bigaman of Ullin and Margaret Tibbs of Cunningham, Ky. ; two brothers, Herbert Hodges of Cairo and Robert Hodges of Villa Ridge; 11 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Assembly of God Church with the Revs. Charles Lance and Wilma Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John's Cemetery in rural Dongola. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the Jones Funeral Home in Tamms and after 11 a.m. Monday until the funeral hour at the Assembly of God Church. Military honors will be given at the graveside.
