WOLF LAKE -- Roy Lee Turner, 35, died Friday, April 11, 2003, in Union County Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Hileman and Parr Funeral Services, with the Rev. Jim Stamp officiating. Burial will be in Jonesboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

SPARTA -- Susie J. Bischoff, 97, died at 6:01 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, in Sparta Community Hospital. Private services will be held in Missouri. Mrs. Bischoff's wishes were to be cremated. Wilson's Funeral Home in Sparta is in charge of arrangements.
William Elliott
JOHNSTON CITY -- William L. "Bill" Elliott, 77, of Johnston City, died at 10:59 p.m. Wednesday April 9, 2003, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. Shelly E. Forrest and the Rev. Marion Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by the Marion Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice. William was born on May 19, 1925, in West Frankfort, the son of Luther and Florence (Meadows) Elliott. He married Jeanette Stallings on September 27, 1945, in Napa, Calif., and she survives. Bill was a self-employed milk distributor and had owned and operated Bill Elliott's Market. He was a former Prudential Insurance agent. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He served in a communications organization known as OP2OG, which was given a Navy Citation after the war for its work in intercepting and decoding enemy radio messages. He was one of the founding members of the Johnston City Little League Program. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Johnston City. He is survived by three children and their spouses, Karen and Jerry Cadle of Marion, Tracy Elliott of Johnston City, Dick and Vickilyn Elliott of West Frankfort; one son-in-law, Kenneth Lewis of Lake of Egypt; six grandchildren and their spouses, Todd and Michelle Thomas of Carterville, Eric and Jennifer Elliott of West Frankfort, Ty Elliott of Marion, Patrick Elliott of Los Angeles, Ryan Lewis of Carterville, Kristen Lewis of Herrin; three great grandchildren, Jacob Elliott, Lexilyn Elliott, and Natalie Lewis; one sister, Mabel King of Lexington, Ky. ; four brothers-in-law and their wives, Troy and Janet Stallings of Johnston City, Homer and Rose Stallings of Johnston City, Bob and Joyce Stallings of Salem, Ray and Marieta Stallings of Fairfield; one sister-in-law and her husband, Joy and Jack Helfrich of Johnston City; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and two life-long friends, Tom Oster of Johnston City and Robert Horner of Okla. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Patricia Ann Lewis in 1996; two sisters, Hazel Hafeli and Florence Morgan; and one infant brother, Sherman Elliott. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed life to the fullest.
Freeman Sowers
DONGOLA -- Freeman Sowers, 91, passed away at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, in City Care Center in Anna. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Crain Funeral Home in Dongola with the Rev. A. W. Landis officiating. Interment will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery in Dongola. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today and until the time of service at the funeral home. Mr. Sowers worked as a shoe cobbler. He was a member of the Maple Grove Baptist Church in Perks. He was born Jan. 24, 1912, in Perks, the son of Oscar and Verona (Swink) Sowers. He married Mildred Blackwood on Dec. 22, 1951. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, on Oct. 25, 2002.
Lydia Crecelius
METROPOLIS -- Lydia Jewell Crecelius, 78, of Metropolis, formerly of Olmsted, died at 11:05 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003, in Good Samaritan Care Center. Mrs. Crecelius was a housewife and a homemaker. She was a member of the Siloh Baptist Church near Villa Ridge, and was a Sunday school teacher for 40 years. Mrs. Crecelius was born Aug. 15, 1924 in Harrisburg, the daughter of the late Oliver Clinton Osborn and Mahalia Emaline (Baker) Osborn. She married Raymond G. Crecelius on Aug. 10, 1942. He preceded her in death on April 27, 1995. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond G. Crecelius and Shirley Crecelius of Metropolis; sister-in-law, Norma Shelton and husband, Denver Shelton of Olmstead; two grandsons, Michael Crecelius of Villa Ridge and Timothy Crecelius of Olmsted; two step grandchildren, Billy Joe Neihoff and Patricia Hughes, both of Metropolis; two great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; three step great-great grandchildren; and two nieces, Kim Gottschall of Anna and Vicky Stevens of Salem. Services for Lydia Jewell Crecelius will be at 2 p.m. Saturdayin Siloh Baptist Church near Villa Ridge, with the Rev. Larry Miller officiating. Interment will be in Concord Cemetery in rural west of Olmsted. Friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge and from 10:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Siloh Baptist Church. Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Orval Walker Jr.
HERRIN -- Orval Walker Jr., 59, died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, in Cardinal Health Care in Energy. Orval was born Aug. 13, 1943, in Herrin to Orval Lee and Bessie (Owens) Walker. He was a member of West Monroe Street Apostolic Church in Herrin. Survivors include his mother, Bessie Walker of Herrin; three brothers and their wives, Henry and Tillie Walker of Murphysboro, Loren and Patty Walker of Hurst and Ronald Eugene Walker of Energy; two sisters, Mary Allen of Johnston City and Marilyn Gibbons of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Larry Joe Walker, and one sister, Letha Mae Walker. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Terry Griffith officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

PINCKNEYVILLE -- Jackson Burgess, 89, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, in Pinckneyville Community Hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, with Brother Rob Mathis officiating. Burial will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery.
