Ruby Arterbury
MARION -- Ruby E. Arterbury, 79, of Marion, died at 8:01 a.m., Sunday, April 6, 2003, at St. Louis University Hospital. Ruby was born on July 24, 1923, in Williamson County to Frank and Pearl (Rook) Sandlin. She married Albert "Ab" Arterbury on Feb. 28, 1943, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He preceded her in death on June 28, 1985. Mrs. Arterbury was a homemaker having formerly worked at Lieders Green house in Prairie VieW. She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Marion. Ruby was close with her family. She and her sisters fished out of just about every pond and lake in Southern Illinois. She was an avid gardener of flowers and was reigning champion of the family Scrabble game, having won two of the last three more recent bouts. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly. In her spare time, Ruby enjoyed volunteer work with the John A. Logan Foundation for the Marion Learning Center. Her joy was to teach those who could not, how to read. Her life was touched often by former "students" who would thank her for the time she took for them. Survivors are son and daughter-in law, James Albert and Jane Arterbury of Waukegan; daughter and son in law, Cheryl "Susie" and Larry Creps of Glendale Heights;son, Michael Frank Arterbury of Pell Lake, Wis. ; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Dawn Arterbury of Waukegan, Jessica Flora Arterbury of Bradenton, Fla., Sandra Susan Daddio of Panama City, Fla., Stacey Lawrence and wife Michelle Creps of Glendale Heights, April Ella Shutter of Adams, Wis., Jeffery Albert Creps and fiance, Nikki Lane of Orlando, Fla., Rebecca Cheryl Lopez and husband Ramone of Carol Stream, Melissa Jane Arterbury of Pell Lake, Wis. and Andrea Beth Arterbury of Pell Lake, Wis. ; 13 great grandchildren, Storm Kovarsky and Ashton Arterbury, Kristina and Cole Creps, Elizabeth and Robert Good,Travis and Brandon Shutter, Joshua and Justin Lopez, Dayton and Austin Arterbury and one unnamed little angel yet to be born; sister and brother-in-law, Betty L. and Paul E. Burns of Marion; sister and brother-in-law, Jeannine and Bill Stapelton of Marion; many special nieces, nephews and cousins, and beloved dog, snickers. Her parents, husband, four sisters, and one brother preceded her in death. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral home in Marion, with the Rev. Gary Rothenberger officiating. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today, April 9, 2003, at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the John A. Logan College Foundation for the Marion Learning Center.

Crystal Manteufel
MOUNT VERNON -- Crystal Sueann Manteufel, 18, died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, in Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Oakwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. Crystal was born Feb. 5, 1983, in Mount Vernon to Paul J. Manteufel and Paula (Bourland) Manteufel. Suvivors include mother, Pamela Manteufel of Mount Vernon; special father, Gene Skobel of Mount Vernon; brothers, Kenneth Manteufel, Daniel Manteufel and Frankie Skobel III, all of Mount Vernon; sisters, Tina Manteufel, Jennifer Manteufel, Alexanderia Skobel, Victoria Skobel and Collene Skobel, all of Mount Vernon; grandparents, Everett Bourland and wife Dee of Mount Vernon; great-grandmother, Laura Bourland of Mount Vernon; uncle, Kevin Bourland and wife Kolleen of Green ville; aunts, Joan Foltz and husband David of Dix and Rebecca Beal of Mount Vernon; great aunts, Sue Brown of Green ville and Jean Reed of Florida; and several cousins. She was preceded in death be great-grandfather, Wilbur Bourland; great-grandparents, Daniel and Myrtle Shroyer; and two baby cousins, Rebecca Dawn and Kevin Dale.

Wanda Young
CHRISTOPHER -- Wanda L. Young, 76, of Christopher, formerly of Elgin, died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Benton Health Care Center in Benton. She was born August 23, 1926 in Elgin to James Lee and Jennie Lynn (Kible) Stewart. Wanda worked at Hoffer Plastics in South Elgin for many years before retirement. She is survived by three children and their spouses, Dennis and Irene Stewart of Elgin, Linda and Frank Arnold of Sesser and James and Carol Young, Sr. of Elgin; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Noel of South Elgin; and one brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Marlene Stewart of Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl Young; two grandsons, Rodney Bailey and James Young, Jr. ; and five sisters, Eithel Reddersdorf, Myrtle Young, Burley Simpson, Jennie Mae Stewart and Hazel Reed. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Elgin. There will be no local services or visitation. Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Danny Strodick
HERRIN -- Danny Joe Strodick, 48, of Herrin, formerly of Grosse Ile, Mich., died at 6:30 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, at home. Mr. Strodick and his wife owned and operated Sheila's Laundromat in Herrin. In his spare time, he enjoyed working around the house and yard, but most of all he loved to travel with his wife and spend time with his family. Danny was born on Dec. 5, 1954, in Detroit to Louis Dean and Virginia (Rivett) Strodick. He married Sheila Parker on Nov. 21, 1973 in Lincoln Park, Mich., and she survives. Other survivors include a godson, Alexander Puhl of South Gate, Mich. ; one uncle, William Parker of Herrin; two nieces and a husband, Christine Parker of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and Tina and Aaron Gripe of Brownstown, Mich. ; two cousins, Violet Barnett of Carterville and John Strodick of Herrin; many other aunts, uncles and cousins; and his beloved dogs, Sandy and Buddy. His parents preceded him in death. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin, with the Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Multiple Sclerosis.

Rev. Billie Douglas
HARRISBURG -- Rev. Billie Douglas, 57, died at 6:04 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery in Cave In Rock. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Open Door Prison Ministries. Rev. Douglas began her ministry in the prison system in 1984. She then earned her degree in theology. She continued her ministry in the prison system throughout her life. She founded Open Door Prison Ministries and Open Door Church in HarrisburG. She also owned and operated Heart to Heart Gospel Shop. She was born April 19, 1945, in Golconda to Bill and Gladys (Russell) Gipson. Her husband of 37 years, Rev. Charles Douglas, survives. Other survivors include one son, Joe Douglas of Fort Lauderdale; one daughter and son-in-law, Tami and John Crest of Equality; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Shirley Turley of Marion, Ala., and Daryl and Paula Russell of Rosiclare; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and John Dozier of Virginia Beach, Va.; and one grandson, Patrick Halloway. An infant sister, Tamara Gipson, preceded her in death.

Cecil Murphy
JOHNSTON CITY -- Cecil Murphy Jr., 67, of Johnston City, died at 7:46 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, at Herrin Hospital. A graveside memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City, with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Per his request his body was cremated. Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City is in charge of arrangements. Cecil was born on December 27, 1935, in Herrin, the son of Cecil Murphy Sr. and Helen Irene (Sherrard) Murphy Turner. He married Rose (Miner) on September 26, 1955, in Corinth, Miss., and she survives. Cecil retired from Norge in 1978 as a mechaniSt. He was an avid Indian fan and sports fan, who loved to hunt and fish. He is survived by his step-father, Ray Turner of Johnston City; two daughters, Patty Green ey and special friend Gary Owens of Johnston City and Susie Murphy of Johnston City; one son and his wife , Richard and Marsha Murphy of Carbondale; five grandchildren, Brandon and Bryan Green ey, Michael, Kelly, and Heather Murphy; one sister and her husband, Barbara and Angelo Pernicano of Las Vegas, NV; two uncles, Alfred and Irene Sherrard of Ferges, and John Sherrard of Johnston City; two aunts, Rosabelle Briscoe of Johnston City and Dorothy Sherrard of Ferges; and three nieces, Angie, Cathy, and Cindy. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one daughter, Debbie Kay Murphy.

Ruby Null
HERRIN -- Ruby Lucille Null, 89, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in Herrin Hospital. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Herrin City Cemetery, with the Rev. Alan D. Milligan officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eagle House Ministries Light House Fund. They may be mailed to Alan D. Milligan, P. O. Box 97, Buncombe, IL 62912. Mrs. Null was a housewife. She was born Feb. 3, 1914, in Makanda to Charles and Stella Watson. She married Leonard C. Null. He preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald Null of Johnston City and Larry and Marilyn Null of Herrin; two grandsons and their wives, Keith and Amy Null of O'Fallon and Kirk and Leslie Null of Normal; and two great-grandsons, Caleb and Jacob Null of Normal. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Edith. Van Natta Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ida Sexton
HERRIN -- Ida Florine Sexton, 88, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Van Natta Funeral Home, with the revs. Ralph Brandon and Don Colson officiating. Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Sexton was a housewife. She was born July 16, 1914, in Freeman Spur to John Wesley and Ada Dunlap. She married Lawrence Sexton. He preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dean Sexton of Dailsboro, Ind., and Jerry and Ginger Sexton of Herrin; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Daryll Stevens of Jacksonville, Fla. ; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two daughters, Arlene Arterberry and Darlene Propes.

Mary Waldron
CAMBRIA -- Mary Ann Waldron, 67 of Cambria, died 4:10 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, at her daughter's residence in Carterville. Mrs. Waldron retired Maytag Industries as a Data Processing Operator. She was born Oct. 15, 1935, in Bush to Joseph and Retha (Childress) Housewright. She was united in marriage with Donald E. "Bow Wow" Waldron on Sept. 5, 1964, in Marion. He died Nov. 20, 2002. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Donna R. and David M. Homoya of Carterville; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Dylan Homoya ofCarterville; sister and brother-in-law, Millie and Audie Calvert of Kentland, Ind. ; brother, Raymond Housewright of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband and parents. Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. The Rev. Robert Chitwood will officiate. Committal services will be Friday at Blairsville Cemetery in Blairsville. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family prefers that memorials be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Juanita Miller
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Juanita Miller , 88, of Wynne, Ark., formerly of Pinckneyville, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at home. Juanita was born in Cutler on March 7, 1915, the daughter of Bert and Helen (Hess) Freeman. She married Elmer A. Miller on Oct. 17, 1932. He preceded her in death Feb. 24, 1981. Juanita was a homemaker. She was a seamstress at the former Pinckneyville Garmet Factory. She was a member of the Beaucoup Baptist Church in Pinckneyville and the International Ladies Garmet Worker's Union. She enjoyed quilt making and traveling. Survivors include a son, Melvin D. Miller, and his wife, Carol, of Alpina, Mich. ; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Gene. Services will be at 9 a.m. today, April 9, 2003, in Beaucoup Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, with the Rev. Randy Plunkett officiating. Interment will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery in Pinckneyville. Visitation was Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Pyatt-Harrawood Cemetery and will be from 8 to 9 a.m. today at the church.
