MURPHYSBORO -- Carrie White, 80, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Allen officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to VNA-TIP Hospice or the National Alzheimer's Association.

Alene Reeves
MURPHYSBORO -- Alene Reeves, 90, died at 12:06 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at home. Arrangments are incomplete at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel.

Mary Cammack Holmes
ANNA -- Mary Cammack Holmes, 98, died at 1:50 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, in Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. She was born Aug. 11, 1904, in Centreville, Miss., the daughter of John and Cornelia Cammack Fletcher. She married Frank J. Holmes on Aug. 14, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio. Mary lived most of her life in Cairo and Anna. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, becoming a member at the age of 11. In her younger years, she taught all age groups in Sunday school and Bible school. She was a senior volunteer for many years. She was a member of the Anna First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James and Betty Holmes of Carterville; a granddaughter, Beverly and Gary Grimm of Columbiana, Ohio; two great-grandsons, Gerard and Stephen of Columbiana; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four brothers and six sisters. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in Crain Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Steve Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Anna City Cemetery. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Anna or to the Shawnee Christian Nursing Center of Herrin.

Mavis L. Wright
WEST FRANKFORT -- Mavis L. Wright, age 86, of West Frankfort died at 12:05 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, in Frankfort Care Center in West Frankfort. She was born March 16, 1917, in Paragould, Ark., to Herman Flota and L. Merle Copher Flota. She married Wayne R. Wright on Dec. 23, 1937, in Arkansas, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1991. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles G. and Linnette Wright of West Frankfort and James Bradford Wright of Washington, D. C. ; six grandchildren, Charles G. Wright Jr., Deborah Woolard, Arnold Wright, James Wright, John Wright and Shawn Wright; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Fann of Du Quoin and Therman Flota of Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Wayne. She was a member of the Orient Church of ChriSt. Mrs. Wright was very active in various clubs and organizations, including being a Girl Scout leader from 1946 to 1966, a member of the West Frankfort Woman's Club, where she served as president in 1951 and 1968. She was the founder and the first president of the Frankfort Area Historical Society. In 1971, she was West Frankfort's citizen of the year, she was a member of the Illinois Historical Society and was vice president in 1976. In 1981, she was awarded the title by the governor of Kentucky "Kentucky Colonel. " In 1983, she was Southern Illinois Woman of the Year and in 1986, was awarded "Mother of the Year" for the state of Illinois. Services for Mavis Wright will be at 1 p.m. today in Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Ed Pool officiating. Burial will be in the Denning Cemetery. Visitation was Saturday. Memorials can be made to the Frankfort Area Historical Society and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Faye Agnes Strouts
JONESBORO -- Faye Agnes Strouts, 83, died at 4 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in her daughter's home in Union County. She was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Tonica, the daughter of Emil and Mary Alleman Neilsen. She married Jack W. Strouts in 1941. Faye worked as a schoolteacher. She was a member of the National Educational Association and Illinois Educational Association. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Michael and Les Grubbe of Jonesboro; one son, Warren Strouts of Nachogdoches, Texas; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters; nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and parents. At her request, Faye was cremated with no services. Crain Funeral Home in Anna is in charge of arrangements.

Carol Poole
DONGOLA -- Carol Poole, 57, of Dongola, formerly of South Elgin, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, in her home. She was born Oct. 2, 1945, in Elgin, the daughter of George Sr. and Norma Hogrewe Van Meter. Carol was employed at Knowels Electronics in Elgin for 29 years. She attended Salem Lutheran Church. Survivors include her husband, Barry; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Becky Poole of South Elgin; her mother, Norma Van Meter of Peel, Ark. ; one brother and sister-in-law, George Jr. and Donna Van Meter of Elgin; and one sister and brother-in-law, Patti and Bob Mersman of Peel, Ark. She was preceded in death by her father, George Van Meter Sr., grandparents, Russell and Ethel Van Meter and John and Olive Hogrewe, and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carlos and Aretta Poole. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Franklyn Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery near Dongola. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Hileman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wendy Ann Dawkins
MARION -- Wendy Ann Dawkins, 26, died at 11:20 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. John Parton officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Dawkins was a homemaker. She was a member of Cornerstone Church in Raleigh and the Church of God in Johnston City. She was born Oct. 3, 1976, to Joseph and Cheryl (Waldron) Adams. She married Kenny Dawkins on July 15, 1995 in Herrin. He survives. Other survivors include one son, Kenneth, at home; three daughters, Cheyenne, Kaylee and McKenzie, all at home; mother, Cheryl Furr of Herrin; one sister, Brandi Payne of Herrin; one brother, Gordon Theel of Hurst; father, of Washington state; grandmother, Mary Ann Waldron of Herrin; in-laws, Kenneth and Norma Dawkins of Christopher; and one half brother, Joey Waldron of Herrin. One grandfather, Joseph Waldron, and one aunt, Judy Waldron, preceded her in death.

Everett Elzie Clark
MACEDONIA -- Everett Elzie Clark, 85, went to be with the Lord at 4:32 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. His death was the result of injuries sustained in a July 23 auto accident. Everett was born Sept. 25, 1917, in rural Macedonia, to Irvin and Ida Kearney Clark. On Nov. 24, 1937, he married June Frances Overturf and they lived together in their Macedonia home until her death on Oct. 25, 2001. Everett was a grain and livestock farmer for over 50 years. He was often the first farmer in the county to try new farming practices, many of which are now commonplace in agricultural production. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and attended the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in McLeansboro and during his lifetime he served as Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher, Layleader and chairman of the administrative board. Everett is survived by one sister, Ruth Fowler of Macedonia; three sons and daughters-in-law, Morris and Karan Clark and David and Kathy Clark, all of Macedonia, and Terry and Judy Clark of West Frankfort; seven grandchildren, Danny and Lisa Clark, Adam and Marcie Clark and Samantha Clark, all of Macedonia, Chuck Clark of Carbondale, Tamara and Allan Willmore of West Frankfort, Kristen Clark of Energy, and Tabitha and Drake Miller of Benton; and seven great-grandchildren, Ramsey and Jaycee Clark of Macedonia, Lucas and Marah Willmore of West Frankfort, and Blane Makennah and Madeleine Miller of Benton. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, June. Everett was a Christian father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and friend who was greatly loved and will be missed by many. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with Pastor Leland Widick officiating. Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Norvell Dunn
MARION -- Norvell Dunn, 68, passed away at 1:35 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, Ky. Norvell was born July 6, 1935, in Goreville, to Virgil and Xenoline Burklow Dunn. Survivors include three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Naomi Edwards of Nashville, Tenn., Myrtle and Carl Kelley of Goreville, and Catherine and Grange Gordon of Olney; and two brothers, Bill Dunn and Wayne Dunn, both of Cypress. Norvell was a 1954 graduate of Vienna High School. He was a 1955 graduate of Draughon's Business College in Paducah. Norvell then received his B. S. and M. S. degrees from Southern Illinois University. Norvell was a U. S. Army veteran. Norvell was employed for approximately 15 years in the trust department of Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust in Chicago. He retired with over 20 years service as professor of accounting at Richland Community College in Decatur. He was a member of the Illinois Federation of Teachers. Norvell was of the Baptist faith. Norvell was an avid outdoorsman. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a devoted member of the NRA. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, with the Rev. Fred Meece officiating. Interment will be in Busby Chapel Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Caroll P. Foster VFW PoSt. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ready 2 Learn educational program, P. O. Box 956, Harrisburg, IL 62946, The Poshard Foundation for Abused Children, c/o John A. Logan College, Logan College Drive, Carterville, IL 62918, or the American Heart Association, P. O. Sharlet L. Ticer
MURPHYSBORO -- Sharlet L. Ticer, 78, died at 3:34 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Sharlet was formerly employed by the Jackson County Nursing Home as a nurse aid and by St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in central supply as well as being a homemaker. She was a member of the Murphysboro VFW 7190 Auxiliary. She was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Murphysboro, the daughter of the late Otto and Harriett Futrell Beasley. She married Benjamin H. Ticer on Sept. 12, 1942, and he survives of Murphysboro. Survivors include one daughter, Bena Sue Hickam of Jacob; four sons, John Edward Ticer and Bruce Allen Ticer, both of Murphysboro, Charles Raymond Ticer of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., and Henry Andrew Ticer of Carbondale; one sister, Jane Russell of Grand Tower; one sister-in-law, Vinnie Taylor of Sand Ridge; one brother-in-law, William Robert Ticer of Marion; 20 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, three brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2003, in Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro. Interment will be in Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County Auxiliary and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Ruth Kueker
SPARTA -- Ruth A. Kueker, 83, died at 11:10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, in Red Bud Regional Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Trinity United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Moody officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Evansville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the donor's choice. McDaniel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
