JOHNSTON CITY -- Harold Lee Shiver, 69, died Tuesday July 29, 2003, at 10:12 a.m. at his family home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. David Maragni officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to VNA-TIP Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Harold was born on April 11, 1934, in Evansville, Ind., the son of Clark and Marietta (Arndt) Shiver. He married Nedra Louise Barnes on Aug. 25, 1967, in Evansville, Ind. She survives. Harold was a drywall finisher for A & K Drywall. He was a member of the Painters Local 32. He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rebecca and John Bilderback of Wadesville, Ind., Cheryl Shiver of Evansville, Ind., and Jamie and Robert Neill of Eugene, Ore. ; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kevin and Debbie Simpson of Jackson, Miss., and James Simpson of Cordova, Tenn. ; fourteen grandchildren; one brother, Gene Shiver of Evansville, Ind. ; one sister, Darlene Shiver of Evansville, Ind. ; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

CHESTER -- M. Bruce Hall, 67, passed away at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, in his home. He was born to Noel and Flossie Pauline Watson Hall in Saline County on Nov. 5, 1935. He was a retired assistant warden of operations at Menard Psych Center in Chester. He was married to Barbara Schulein Lake on May 15, 1999, in Chester. He was a United States Marine Corp Veteran serving from 1955 to 1961. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chester, Chester Eagles Club 3252, American Legion Post 487 in Chester, Randolph County Shriners, Chester Police Commissioner, Chester Zoning Board, Chester Memorial Hospital Board, United States Deputy Warden Association, Randolph County Marine Corp Legion, Chester Rotary Club, Chester County Club, AFSCME Chapter 31 Retirees and Chester Elks. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Hall of Chester; three stepchildren, Gerald Lake, Jeffrey and Lisa Lake, and Lynn Lake, all of Ellis Grove; one sister-in-law, Mickie Schulein of Ellis Grove; four brothers, Noel Hall of Bull Shoals, Ark., Gerald L. Hall of Creal Springs, Maurice Hall of Galatia, Forrest Hall of Alton; four grandchildren, Davalee Lake, Dawson Lake, Bobbie Ann Lake and Blaise Lake, all of Ellis Grove; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 31, 2003, in St. Mary Catholic Church in Chester, with Monsignor Dennis Schaefer officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Chester. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and 7:30 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday in Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester. Ethel V. Stanton Harris
MURPHYSBORO -- Ethel V. Stanton Harris, 89, passed away at 2:55 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, in the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Murdale Gardens of Memory, with the Rev. James Easton officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Pettett Funeral Home. Ethel was born on February 20, 1914, in Herrin to John and Flora (Clem) Swatsell. She married Thomas Stanton on Oct. 26, 1931, in Murphysboro. He preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 1978. Mrs. Ethel Stanton Harris was a homemaker and a member of Pate Chapel Church in Murphysboro. She is survived by 12 children, Nadine Miller of Murphysboro, Bess Mydler of Du Bois, Claude Stanton, James Stanton, John Stanton, and Robert Stanton, all of Murphysboro, Larry Stanton of Marion, Ronald Ray Stanton of Murphysboro, Patricia Grammer of Herrin, Debra Sykes and Vicky McGhee, both of Murphysboro, and Imogene Gummersheimer of Amarillo, Texas; 56 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Joe Swatsell of West Frankfort. She was preceded in death by two sons, two daughters, one grandchild, two great-grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters.

MURPHYSBORO -- Hallie Ayuanna Elaine and Ellianna Linette Fred, infant twin daughters of Travis and Kasey (Bost) Fred of Murphysboro, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis. Private graveside services will be held at De Soto City Cemetery, with the Rev. Ron Bracy officiating. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63131. Nellie Aleksick
ZEIGLER -- Nellie Ann (Mientus) Aleksick, 79, of Charlack, Mo., formerly of Zeigler, died at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, in the NHC Nursing Home in Maryland Heights, Mo. Nellie was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Zeigler, to John Francis and Anna Waido Mientus Sr. and attended grade school and graduated from the Zeigler high school. She married Walter Jacob Aleksick on June 7, 1947, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Zeigler. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1977, after 29 years of marriage. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Marie and Rodney Ford of St. Louis, Mary Ann and Stephen Krekel of Creve Coeur, Mo., Sharon Rose Ploof of St. Peters, Mo. ; a son and daughter-in-law, John Walter and Tracy Aleksick of St. Charles, Mo. ; 11 grandchildren, Rodney Dean Ford Jr., Kelly Marie Ford, Kevin Joseph Krekel, Kimberly Ann Morelli and her husband Christopher, Kraig Matthew Krekel, Stacy Elizabeth Walter, Michael Christopher, Shelby Nicole, Brendan Kennedy, Sheridan Frances and Sydney Ann Aleksick; two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Mikel Herbert and Jacob Christopher Morelli, and a brother, John Francis Mientus Jr. of Herrin. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Walter Aloysius Mientus of Zeigler. Nellie enjoyed being involved in her senior clubs: Elderberries of All Souls Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary of Zeigler, the VFW Post 3944, St. Ann Sodality of All Souls Catholic Church and was an active member of the Our Lady of Presentation Church of Overland, Mo. She enjoyed her family and traveling throughout her retirement. Services for Mrs. Aleksick will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Zeigler, with Father Joseph Trapp officiating. Interment will be at the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, east of Royalton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler where a prayer service will be at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Aleksick may be made to the American Heart Association, Diabetes Association or for Masses.

NASHVILLE -- Mildred F. Garlich, 92, died at 11:55 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, in Washington County Hospital in Nashville. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Grace United Methodist Church in Nashville, with Larry Garlich officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in Okawville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday in Styninger-Krupp Funeral Home in Nashville and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the church. Barbara Ann Alvis
DU QUOIN -- Barbara Ann Alvis, 67, of Du Quoin, passed away at 2:12 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. Barbara worked at the Dietary Department at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin and as a private care nurse. She was of the Pentecostal faith. She was a member of Du Quoin American Legion, Du Quoin VFW Auxiliary and Senior Citizens of Du Quoin. She was born June 6, 1936, in Du Quoin, the daughter of Charles Theodore and Mary Lucille Gilliam Tilley. She married James Patton Alvis on June 8, 1954, in Du Quoin and he preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1993. She is survived by three sons, James P. Alvis Jr. of Mishawaka, Ind., Frankie T. Alvis of Du Quoin, and Jerry W. Alvis of Du Quoin; one daughter, Susan Varner of Du Quoin; two sisters, Frieda Longshore and Debra Zorn, both of Du Quoin; three brothers, John Tilley, Ted Tilley, and Bobby Tilley, all of Du Quoin; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. C. L. McKinnies and the Rev. Dan McKinnies officiating. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Phyllis P. Flanagan
DU QUOIN -- Phyllis P. Flanagan, 76, passed away at 5 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2003, in her home. Phyllis traveled throughout Southern Illinois auditing and establishing agents for Western Union and worked out of the Mount Vernon office. She was of the Christian faith. She was an avid bridge player and member of ACBL. She was born Nov. 6, 1926, in Algona, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas P. and Flora Dean Moncel Flanagan. She is survived by one sister, Rosemary Combes of Washington; close friend of the family, Norma Tufford of Du Quoin; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. Gerald Wright officiating. Interment will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park in Newton. Friends may make memorials to the Luke Memorial Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home.
