CHESTER -- Lucy McMath, 96, of Chester, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in her home. Arrangements are incomplete at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester.

Margaret Denham
RADOM -- Margaret D. Denham, 93, died at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Friendship Manor Health Care Center in Nashville. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Michael Catholic Church in Radom, with Fr. Dan Jurek officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale. Visitation will be Saturday from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Campagna Funeral Home in Ashley. Memorials may be made to St. Michael School and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Wayne Wagner
GOLCONDA -- Wayne Wagner, 81, died 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, in the Sulphur Springs Cemetery in Golcanda, with the Rev. Roy Lee Baker officiating.

Genevieve Reese
PULASKI -- Genevieve Reese, 91, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Daystar Care Center in Cairo. Services will be at noon today at St. John Praise and Worship Center. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the National Cemetery in Mound City. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. today at the church. Heavenly Gates Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Lettie L. Gregory
DU QUOIN -- Lettie L. Gregory, 70, of Du Quoin, passed away at 9:06 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at home. Lettie was born on April 12, 1934, in Du Quoin, the daughter of Edward and Martha C. (Plumlee) Stanhouse. She married Clifford M. Gregory Sr. on June 21, 1952, in Piggott, Ark., and he survives. Lettie was a member of the First Christian Church in Du Quoin, where she was active with the Women's Fellowship Group. She was an avid fishermen and enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She is survived by husband, Clifford; four sons, Clifford Gregory, Jr. and wife Doris of Du Quoin, Rex Gregory and wife Urai of Du Quoin, Randy Gregory and wife Jaci of Tamaroa, and Mark Gregory and wife Paige of Sunfield; two daughters, Tammy Foster and husband Danny of Du Quoin, and Stacey Arnett and husband Terry of Dowell, one brother, William O. Stanhouse and wife Opal of Du Quoin, three sisters, Ruth Degler of Du Quoin, Frances Hawkins and husband Milton Charles of Sparta, and Cecil Szczeblewski and husband Joe of Du Quoin, two sisters-in-law, Shirley Harland of Coello, and Dorothy Jump of Du Quoin; 15 grandchildren, Patricia and Brian Winters, Jon M. Gregory, Diana and Anthony Howell, Joshua P. Gregory, Avery Arnett, Nolan Gregory, Gregory Arnett, Landry Arnett, Katelyn Gregory, Kylie Gregory, Kendra Gregory, Alison and Joe Borowski, Kari Foster , Amber and Josh Cranford, and Ryan Foster ; five great-grandchildren, Morgan Winters, Connor Borowski, Brian Winters, Jr., Korbin Cranford, and Makenzie Howell. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Edward Stanhouse, and four sisters, Dorothy Stanhouse, Gertrude Braml, Lorraine Sisney, and Bobbie Engert. Services will be held at the Pyatt-Harrawood & Epplin Funeral Home in Du Quoin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, with Dr. John Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery in Du Quoin. Visitation will be held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 21, 2004, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2004. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or American Cancer Society.

Louie Hanks
MARION -- Louie D. Hanks, 91, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in Benton Healthcare Center. Louie was born April 21, 1913, in Marion, to Oscar and Emma (Reese) Hanks. He married Ruth McDannel on Aug. 15, 1936, in Benton. After 50 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 1986. Mr. Hanks was retired from Elgin State Hospital where he was employed as an attendant. He formerly worked as a miner at area coal mines. He was a member of New Dennison Baptist Church of Marion. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Elmer Smith of West City; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Wayne Hanks of Knoxville, Tenn., and Charles D. and Sharon Hanks of Elgin; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Sophia Faulkner of Mascoutah and Alberta Hill and Loudene Dial, both of Marion. His parents, his wife, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. The Revs. Gordon Lantrip and Bill Kopas will officiate. Burial will follow at Hanks Cemetery in rural Marion. Visitation was from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Hanks Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Nina I. Hoffman
CARBONDALE -- Nina I. Hoffman, 93, of Carbondale, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with the Rev. John Annable officiating. Interment will be held in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, Murphysboro. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today, Sept. 21, 2004, at the funeral home. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to First United Methodist Church, 214 W. Main, Carbondale, IL 62901 or VNA TIP Hospice, 508 South Park Ave., Herrin, IL 62948 and will be accepted by the funeral home. Nina was born on Aug. 21, 1911, in Hellertown, Penn., the daughter of Herbert Samuel and Meda Minerva (Balliet) Kressler. She married Paul M. Hoffman on July 8, 1933. He preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Paul R. Hoffman; one grandson, Richard P. Kipping; one sister, Florence Angstadt; and two brothers, Harold and Howard Kressler. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Nancy L. Hoffman of Carbondale, and Patricia and Rick Kipping of Mesa, Ariz. ; one daughter-in-law, Gwen Hoffman of Delwood; two grandsons, Jeffrey (Darlene) Hoffman of Columbia, Mo., and David Kipping of Mesa, Ariz. ; two great- grandchildren, Breanna and Dreston Hoffman of Annapolis, Mo., one granddaughter-in-law, Lynette Richmond of Vulcan, Mo. ; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Herbert (Venus) Kressler of Emmaus, Pa., Montford (Esther) Kressler of Spring Hill, Fla., and Kenneth Kressler of Loveland, Colo. ; one sister, Sylvia (George) Mease of Kintnersville, Pa. ; and one brother-in-law, Walter Hoffman of Crystal River, Fla. Mrs. Hoffman graduated as a practical nurse and did private duty care for some time. She had been very active in the First United Methodist Church, Carbondale, her church home for over 50 years. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for many years. Her major focus was her family and her home.

Marguerite (Rocassi) Maxton
HURST -- Marguerite (Rocassi) Maxton, 86, died at 12 p.m. Sept. 19, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 21, 2004, in Blairsville Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to Hurst Ambulance Service, American Parkinson Disease Association, Box 8111, 660 South Euclid Avenue St. Louis, Mo. 63110. She was a registered nurse at the Ordinance Plant in World War II, UMWA Miners Hospital in West Frankfort, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and a recovery room nurse in Herrin Hospital. She was born on Dec. 1, 1917, in Hurst, the daughter of Genoeffa (Spagnoli) and James Rocassi. She married William M. Maxton Jr. Dec. 26, 1942, in Perryville, Mo. He preceded her in death April 18, 1993. Survivors include daughters, granddaughters and sons-in-law, Mae L. And Norman Hanna of Hurst, Kara Hanna of Hilton Head, S. C., and Donna S. and Leroy Newton of Carterville; sisters, Eva Mae and Lee Townes of Cape Girardeau and Louise Dunlap of Du Quoin; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, stepmother, Pauline Rocassi; husband and sister, Mary Fegley. Marguerite's family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Pramote whose compassionate concern and medical expertise allowed them to keep her with them many more year than anyone deemed possible. Also a special thanks to caregivers, Vera, Patty and Evelyn.

Thomas Elmer Woods
CAMBRIA -- Thomas Elmer Woods, 86, of Cambria, formerly of Carbondale and Bush, passed away at 3:51 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale, with the Rev. Robbie Chitwood officiating. Interment will be held in Blairsville Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. Thomas was born on July 12, 1918, in New Haven, to Walter A. and Laura Eva (Quick) Woods. He married Jewell F. Nannie on Nov. 21, 1980, in Elkville. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2003. He is also preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Thomas Woods; one great-grandson, Josh Potter; one brother, Walter Woods; and one sister, Ruby Stocks. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Brenda Woods of Cambria; one daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Kenneth Potter of Cambria; his grandchildren, Richard and Misty Potter, Kenneth Potter, and April Woods, all of Cambria, John and Rhonda Woods of Marion, Teresa and Andrew Beltz of Harrisburg, and Katherine and Greg Powell of Wolf Lake; 14 great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews, Shirley Rae and Fred Keppner of Harrisburg, William Walter and Billie Woods of Murphysboro, Larry Dean and Wanda Woods of Crab Orchard, James Edward and Sandy Woods of Hermitage, Tenn., Margaret Ann Jarvis of Carterville, Sharon Kay and David Welch of Cambria, and James Wayne and Carol Stocks of St. Louis. Thomas was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Cambria and a 55-year member of the Labors Local No. 773 of Marion. He served during World War II in the U. S. Army.

CARBONDALE -- Jewell Juanita Cook Ferguson, 76, of Carbondale, went to be with the Lord away at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Shawnee Christian Nursing Home, Herrin. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with the Rev. Donnie Colson officiating. Interment will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Carbondale. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of the service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale. Jewell was born on Sept. 1, 1928, in Carbondale to Maben Claire and Ethel Belle Potter. Survivors include two sons, Ray Ladale Gwaltney of Arizona and Eddie Wayne Gwaltney of Carbondale; two daughters and one son-in-law, Billie Eileen and David 'Cotton' Ferrell of Makanka and Marsha Kay Berkowitz of Crainville; her loving brother, Kenneth Potter of Cambria; one sister, Henrehitta Wright of Florida; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
