Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 22, 2004, in Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, with the Rev. Bill Howard officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Johnston Funeral Home in Mount Vernon.

MURPHYSBORO -- Gladys Lucille Wright, 84, died at 9:05 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Oak Grove Rehabilitation Care Center in Carbondale. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, with Pastor Charles Allen officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Pansy Oldani
HERRIN -- Pansy L. Oldani, 80, of Herrin, passed away at 5:43 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was on born Jan. 7, 1924, in Herrin, to Charles Denton and Mary (Ice) Griffin. She married Robert William Oldani on Jan. 12, 1941, in Cape Girardeau. They enjoyed spending their weekends dancing together at the Herrin Eagles, the VFW and the American Legion. Robert preceded her in death on March 8, 1991. Mrs. Oldani worked as a salesclerk for 20 years at Kay's in Herrin. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Herrin. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing pinochle with her friends and baking. Her pies were the delight of the whole family. She was the linchpin of her family in all seasons. In her later years, she especially enjoyed short drives in the beautiful Southern Illinois countryside. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. Oldani Jr. and Jo Anna Rancillio of Scottsdale, Ariz. ; one brother, Wayne Griffin of Herrin; five nieces and nephews, Jeff Griffin of Johnston City, Donna Bonali of Marion, Linda Cox of Mulkeytown, Marsha Jane Conley of Elkville and Robert Wick of Bloomington; and two sisters-in-law, Jennie Gammill and Louise Wilson, both of Herrin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Charles B. and Donald E. Griffin; and two sisters, Leatha C. Griffin and Gladys Eversman. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The Revs. Lee Lovett and Don Cannon will officiate. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MARION -- David L. Lyerla, 44, of Marion, passed away at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today in the Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Rick Wall officiating. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the funeral home. Burial will be in County Line Cemetery in Creal Springs. Memorials may be made to the Lyerla children. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home or may be sent c/o Blue Funeral Home, P. O. Box 411, Marion, IL 62959. Mr. Lyerla was born April 14, 1960, in Marion to Shelby and Mae Bell (Johnson) Lyerla. Survivors include his mother, Mae Bell Lyerla of Marion; four sons, David Lee Lyerla of Marion, DeWayne Allen Lyerla of Marion, Darren Lee Lyerla of Marion and Derick Ray Lyerla of Marion; one daughter, Dawn Marie Lyerla of Georgia; one grandson, Devon Matthew Lyerla; one sister and brother-in-law, Debra and Rick Camden of Peoria; many nieces and nephews; and his good friends, Robert and Shelly Lambert. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Lyerla was a truck driver and a Baptist. His hobbies were country music and metal detecting. He loved his children.
Betty McNeely
CARBONDALE -- Betty McNeely, 76, of Carbondale, went home to be with the Lord at 8:25 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, with her husband, Leon, at her side, in the Carbondale Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born on Nov. 9, 1927, in Marion, a daughter of Ray and Ora (Cothran) McCormick. On June 2, 1945, she married Leon McNeely. She was a devoted wife and mother and a friend to all. Her career included local reporting for the Marion newspaper, office duties in Kroger and Daniel Stores, Weller Plumbing and Heating, and the Illinois Baptist State Association Office in Springfield. She was a secretary at SIUC for many years, retiring in 1993. She was a member of the University Baptist Church in Carbondale. Survivors include her husband, Leon McNeely of Carbondale; one son, Kevin Lee McNeely of Springfield; one daughter, Karen Jean McMinn of Carbondale; two brothers, Raymond McCormick of Marion and Robert McCormick of Carbondale; and two sisters, Helen Ohms of Marion and June McKinney of Westchester. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, with the Rev. Sam Foskey officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and until the time of services on Thursday. Memorials may be made to the University Baptist Church in memory of Mrs. McNeely.

CARBONDALE -- Paul James Lougeay, 85, died at 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, in the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale, with the Rev. Janice West officiating. Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Diabetes Association.
Ruth Marlow
HERRIN -- Ruth Marlow, 95, of Herrin, passed away at 11:14 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in the Frankfort Care Center in West Frankfort. Ruth's choice of final disposition was to be cremated with no service. Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin is entrusted to carry out her wishes. Ruth was born in Minto, N. D., to Guy and Georgina (Dennhaousen) Miller on March 10, 1909. She married Peter Marlow on May 29, 1937. Peter passed away on Feb. 2, 1968. Ruth is also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters. Ruth is survived by several nieces, nephews and close friends. Ruth was a buyer for the Gloudemans-Gage Company ready-to-wear department store, the former A. J. Geniesse Company, the Herrin Supply Company and the owner and operator of the Herrin Town Shop. Ruth also hosted a radio talk show on WJPF radio station. Ruth enjoyed caring for a variety of pets, reading, traveling and gardening. During her younger years, she was an avid horseback rider. Ruth's friendship and zest for life will be dearly missed.

CARTERVILLE -- Sgt. Benjamin Kent 'Mudcat' Smith, 24, died Wednesday, Sept. 22 , 2004, while on active duty in the Al-Anbar Province of Iraq. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Riggin- Pillatsch Funeral Home, with Minister Scott Cody and the Rev. Charles Epperly officiating. Burial will be in Willowrest Cemetery, with full military honors by the U. S. Marine Corps. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A fund in memory of Sgt. Smith has been set up at Old National Bank in Carterville. Contributions will be collected at the funeral home or can be sent to the bank at P. O. Box 280, Carterville, IL 62918.
