GORHAM -- Hildegard Ida Clara (Doering) Rathjen, 89, of Perryville, Mo., formerly of Jacob and Gorham, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Perry County Memorial Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Jacob, with the Rev. Michael Kettner officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery in Jacob. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 6:30 to 10 a.m. at the Young and Sons Chapel in Perryville, Mo., then from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church in Jacob.
Odell Eastwood
ANNA -- Odell Eastwood, 79, of Anna, died at 11:07 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at home near Saratoga. He was born on May, 23, 1925, in White Hill, the son of Paris and Bertie (Wall) Eastwood. He married Shirley James Oct. 4, 1954, in Jackson, Mo. Odell was an avid Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed cutting timber all over Southern Illinois. He worked at the former National Mobile Home Plant north of Anna and retired as a custodian at Union County Hospital in Anna. He was a member of the Saratoga Church. He is survived by his wife Shirley of Anna; one son, Steve Eastwood of Jonesboro; three daughters, Linda and husband, Gary Rendleman of Anna, Susan and husband Stephen Curtis of Pleasant View, Tenn., Lesa and husband Doug Halterman of Anna; two sisters, Betty Garrett of Anna and Alberta Cook of Jonesboro; three grandchildren, Laura and Lisa Sheppard and Thomas Halterman. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, James O. 'Jimmy' Eastwood and four brothers, Lawrence, Lowell, Lolo and Luther. Services for Mr. Odell Eastwood will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Doug Atkins officiating. Interment will be in the Ebenezer Hall Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2004, at the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna. Memorials may be made to the Ebenezer Hall Cemetery or Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Cyril Eugene Bowlin
BENTON -- Cyril Eugene Bowlin, 56, of Benton, died at 2:15 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, in Hobbs- Johnson Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Robert Askew officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery in Buckner. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Bowlin was born on Dec. 9, 1947, in Chicago, the son of Alva 'Bud' Bowlin Jr. and Jessie (Lunsford) Bowlin. He married the former Gay Marshall on June 28, 1985, and she survives. He was a self-employed hunting and fishing guide and a U. S. Army veteran. Cyril was a member of the NRA and Ducks Unlimited and a life member of BASS. He was inducted into the International Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in 2004 in Hayword, Wis., and was the only person from Illinois with this honor. He was the Team Supreme tournament director and IN Bass Tournament director, won the Ambassadors Classic in 1989, and was a major participant in the celebrity quail hunt held at the Rend Lake Resort. He hosted a television show 'Southern Outdoors with C. B. ,' which still airs on television today. He is survived by his wife, Gay Bowlin of Benton; one daughter, Adena Bowlin of Benton; his parents, Alva 'Bud' Bowlin Jr. and wife Jessie of Benton; one sister and brother-in-law, Christi and Dwayne Kirkman of Benton; two nephews, Jonathon and Korby Kirkman, both of Benton; and one great-niece, Kailey Kirkman, and one great-nephew, Zack Kirkman, both of Benton. Mr. Bowlin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alva Bowlin Sr. and Sybil Bowlin, Oscar and Flora Lunsford, and several aunts and uncles. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Dr. Joan Ferrell
RALEIGH -- After a long battle with cancer, Dr. Joan Ferrell, of Raleigh, died at home in the arms of her husband and surrounded by her family. Joan was born on Jan. 19, 1941, in West Frankfort, to John and Dorothy (McCloud) Sinks. She married Donald V. Ferrell on June 6, 1969. Dr. Joan Ferrell was an English/French instructor at Southeastern Illinois College for 31 years until she retired in 2002. Joan received her doctorate in English from SIUC in 1998, after having obtained dual master's degrees in English and French. Her many accomplishments include the 2002 State of Illinois Community College Trustees Association Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year, Southeastern Illinois College's Outstanding Faculty Member and recipient of Loren P. and Velma Dallas award in 2002, the NISOD Medal of Excellence and past president of Southeastern Illinois College Education Association. Joan was Southeastern's ICISP representative, ICISP's statewide faculty/administration international exchange coordinator and coordinator of international education and international trips. Joan had the opportunity to travel extensively and she wanted her students to understand, speak and experience what she had learned through international travel. Joan was the moving force that resulted in SIC's first men's golf team, which she coached. She acted in and directed numerous plays at SIC, culminating in what some would describe as a smashing success, 'A Christmas Carol,' performed in December 2002. She edited and published SIC's literary magazine, 'Across These Hills,' for several years, both the college and high school editions. Joan's favorite pastimes were golfing, reading, gourmet cooking, playing the piano and playing bridge. She is survived by her husband, Donald Ferrell; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Steven Brett Fricks and Jonathan Patrick Sr. and Juanita Fricks, all of Raleigh; two adorable grandsons, Jonathan and Jordan; her mother, Dorothy Fricks of Jonesboro; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Jimmy Watkins and Lana and Gary Watkins, all of Jonesboro; one brother, Robert Fricks of Jonesboro; seven nieces and nephews; eight great-nieces and -nephews; her aunts, uncles and cousins; and a host of wonderful friends. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado, with services at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20. Interment will be at Jonesboro Cemetery in Jonesboro following the service. Contributions can be made to the Dr. Joan Ferrell Memorial Scholarship at SIC or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Betty Blechle
CHESTER -- Betty J. Blechle, 80, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chester, with Father Eugene Wojcik officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Chester. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schroeder-McClure Funeral Chapel in Chester. Then there will be a procession to the church. Memorials may be made to Masses at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chester or St. Ann's Healthcare Center.
Rita R. Bretscher
CARBONDALE -- Rita R. Bretscher, 89, died at 1:28 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Mrs. Bretscher was born on July 13, 1915, in Springfield, to F. R. and Dell (Fairles) Jordan. She married Carl E. Bretscher on Sept. 12, 1942, in Springfield. He survives. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Mrs. Bretscher was a graduate of Milwaukee Downer College, which is a part of Lawrence University, and she also graduated from Oglala Lakota College. She had taught art in the Springfield grade and high schools until her retirement. She had obtained her pilot's license. Mrs. Bretscher received an appreciation award for her work with the VFW. Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, with the Rev. Kim Magwire officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Huffman-Harker Funeral Home in Carbondale. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, where she was a member.
Thomas 'Tom' McClanahan
MARION -- Thomas 'Tom' McClanahan, 96, died at 2:55 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, in Heritage Manor in Bloomington, where he had resided the last four months. Tom was born on April 6, 1908, in Marion, the son of John and Anna Perry McClanahan. He spent his life in Marion and Chicago where he was employed for many years. Tom enjoyed writing poetry and has had several poems published. He was also an avid Cubs fan for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline (Gilley) McClanahan; an infant son, his parents; one brother, John Franklin Jr. ; and two sisters, Kate and Beulah. Survivors include one sister, Martha; two nieces, Marla and Jeannie; two great-nieces and one great-nephew; many members of his wife's family; and many good friends. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Donald Fisher of Grantsburg officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Helen M. (Odom) Campbell
CAMBRIA -- Helen M. (Odom) Campbell, 84, a resident of Miamisburg, Ohio, and formerly of Illinois, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Heartland of Oakridge Nursing Home in Miamisburg. Helen was born on Dec. 7, 1919, in Cambria, to the late Ben B. and Ethel A. (McCormack) Odom. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin L. Campbell, on Jan. 15, 2004. She is survived by one son, Allen R. Campbell of West Carrollton, Ohio; two grandsons, Bryan and wife Renee Campbell of Miamisburg and Devin and wife Gisel Campbell of West Carrollton; two great-grandsons, Clark and Logan Campbell; two brothers-in-law, M. Lester Campbell of Illinois and Delbert L. and wife Nellie Campbell of Coulterville; two sisters-in-law, Pearl and husband Don Lucy of Delta, Colo., and Lois D. and husband Roy McConkey of Chester. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, in the Gebhart-Schmidt-Parramore Funeral Home, located at 508 E. Linden Ave. in Miamisburg, with Pastor Rich McKinley officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Hazel Thomas Sanders
BENTON -- Hazel Thomas Sanders, 86, of Benton, died at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. She was born in Benton on Aug. 27, 1918, the daughter of Louis and Gertrude (Reed) Vaughn. In October 1933, Hazel married Frank Thomas, who preceded her in death. She then married Lee Holman, who also preceded her in death, and Russell Sanders, who also preceded her in death. Hazel is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Terry L. and wife Mary Lou of Benton and Val Thomas of Arlee, Mont. ; 13 grandchildren, Dean, Terry, Monte, Darren and Kevin Thomas, Dawn Swinney, April Zimmer, Adam and Aaron Thomas, Tera Keller and Lynne Stiebel; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one son, Gary L. Thomas; one daughter, Glenda Stiebel; one brother, Thomas Vaughn; and two half-brothers, Luther and Cletis Corey. Private graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20, in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. The Morton and Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
