Mamie L. Sherman
AVA -- Mamie L. Sherman, 83, died at 12:55 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Nate Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Birkner Cemetery in Ava. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Sherman was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Murphysboro. She was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Elkville, to Rolla and Ada Robinson Colp. She married Ottie Sherman on Nov. 22, 1946, in DeSoto, Miss., and he passed away on July 22, 1990. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Bob Fulton of Ava and Mary and Kenny Miller of Dieterich; one daughter-in-law, Alice Sherman of Ava; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Woodrow Colp of Waukegan. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John E. Sherman; one sister; and four brothers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Birkner Cemetery Fund.

GORHAM -- John Reames, 59, of Fairview Heights, formerly of Gorham, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, in John Cochran Hospital in St. Louis. Services will be at 12:45 p.m. Friday at Jefferson Barracks Chapel in St. Louis. Burial will follow in Jefferson Barracks Cemetery.
Edward Lee Steckenrider
HERRIN -- Edward Lee Steckenrider, 78, of Phoenix passed away Jan. 7, 2005. Edward was born on Sept. 11, 1926, in Herrin, to Lewis and Lela (Felts) Steckenrider. Edward resided in Phoenix since 1960. He worked for the YMCA until 1965 and then the Salt River Project in Phoenix until his retirement in 1986. He is survived by his wife, Norma of Phoenix; sister, Wilma Wallace of Marion; grandson, Dave and granddaughter, Michelle, both of Chicago; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy, Troy, Walter, Carl and L. V. Steckenrider; and sisters, Mary Fierke and Helen Aronson. A memorial celebrating his life was Jan. 16, 2005, in Phoenix, Ariz.
John Lester Gogue
HARCO -- John Lester Gogue, 79, died at 11:59 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at home in Harco. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, in Harco Baptist Church, with the Revs. Roy Hughes, Denny Steed and Bob Inboden officiating. Burial will be in Brushy Cemetery in Harco, with military rites by Harrisburg American Legion Post 167 and Carrier Mills Post 364. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia. Mr. Gogue was born April 26, 1925, in Williamson County, to Albert and Mahala (Bradley) Gogue. He was the youngest of 11 children. The family moved to Saline County when he was a young child. He served in the Navy during World War II on the USS Taylor in the South Pacific. He was on lead escort ship at Tokyo Bay when the peace treaty was signed. He received the WWII Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the WWII American Campaign Medal and the WWII Asiatic Pacific Medal. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. On Oct. 8, 1949, he married Donna J. Miller in Mountain Home, Ark. They celebrated 55 years together. They had three children, Betty, Johnny and Wilma. He was a Christian, saved during a revival on Aug. 9, 1943. He was a member of the Harco Baptist Church. He was retired from U. S. Power Co. in Marion after 24 years of service. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Betty Gogue of Galatia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Gee and Les Smith of Nashville, Tenn., and Wilma and Scott Lambert of Harco; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Leon Gogue of Eldorado and Clarence and Nellie Gogue of Steger; one sister, Bessie Inboden Turner of West Frankfort; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Crystal Gogue; his parents; two sisters, Loretta and Madge; and five brothers, Arthur, Roscoe, Lawrence, Robert and Dossie.

MURPHYSBORO -- Evelyn Marie Woods, 86, died at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in Mimosa Acres Elderly Care in Marion. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Pettett Funeral Home, with Elder David Wendler and Pastor Dale Barnhurst officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Adventist Disaster and Relief Agency or the Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc., and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

TILDEN -- Terry R. Ackley, 55, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, in Sparta Community Hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home in Tilden. Burial will be in Tilden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Wilburn Denham
MARION -- Wilburn Denham, 78, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Don Colson officiating. Graveside rites will be performed by the VFW and the American Legion in Herrin. There will be no visitation. Mr. Denham was an engineer and a veteran of the Marine Corps. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion in Herrin and the Southern Illinois Leathernecks Marine Corps League in Herrin. He was born March 3, 1926, in Herrin, to Henry Denham and Lela (Hayes) Denham. He married Jenna Lee (Mitchell) Denham and she preceded him in death on May 10, 1974. Survivors include five nieces, Lori Denham of Marion, Patty Murrah of Lincoln, Sandra Adams of Urbana, Vicki Dunaway of Champaign and Leah Gahn of West Frankfort; four nephews, Allen Denham of Freeman Spur, John Denham of Haines, Fla., Richie Denham of West Frankfort and Gary Jones of Wildwood, Fla. ; and a brother-in-law, Bill Jones of Champaign. He was preceded in death by four brothers; three sisters; his wife and parents.

ANNA -- Kim Caraker, 42, of Denton, Texas, formerly of the Anna-Jonesboro area, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, in Jackson County. He was born on June 7, 1962, in Anna. He married Jennie Blevins on Aug. 27, 1993, in Elco. He worked in construction for many years. Survivors include his wife Jennie; two sons, Aaron Caraker and Dana Caraker both of Florida; father and mother, Rodney and Loretta Lacy of Alto Pass; four sisters, Rita Jackson of West Vienna, Samantha Ashton of Jonesboro, Robin Buchmeier of Anna and Darlene Lacy of Alto Pass. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with the Rev. Paul Tirey officiating. Interment will be in Jonesboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hileman Funeral Home.

MOUNT VERNON -- Thelma L. Peeler, 76, died at 4 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2005, in Barnes-Jewish Extended Care in Clayton, Mo. There will be no public services or visitation.
