Leslie Funk
Leslie Funk, 89, of Palm Harbor, FL, formerly of Elgin, died Friday, February 6, 2004. Born in Knox, IN, he moved to Florida about 20 years ago after retiring as a watch maker for Elgin National Watch Company, after 41 years of service. A graduate of Elgin High School, Class of 1933 and a U.S. Army Veteran serving in W.W.II, member American Legion Post #57, a past board member and member of Zion Lutheran Church of Elgin. Leslie was very active in Elgin's Little League and an active golfer both in Elgin and in Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Fern; two sons, James of Charleston, NC and Richard of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Julie Ash and Andrew Funk, both of Denver, CO, James Funk of Grand Blanc, MI, and Christina Lawrence of Portland, OR.

Jeanne A. Penniall
Jeanne A. Penniall, 76, of West Dundee passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at her home and is now in God's tender care. She was born in Elgin on October 3, 1927 the daughter of Fred and Harriet (nee Finn) Rausch.
Jeanne was a 28 year employee of School District #300. She worked as Secretary in the Guidance Office at Dundee Community High School. She was loved by all her students and co-workers. Jeanne was the "foundation" of her family, she will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her children, Michael J. (Sue) Penniall of Urbana, IL and Barbara Penniall of HI; five grandchildren, Joel (Wendy) Abbamonte of Elgin, Brian (Shannon) Penniall of Lake Zurich, Meredith Penniall of St. Charles, Jeff Kotiw of Champaign and Tracy (Spencer) Adkins or Urbana; seven great-grandchilden, Anthony, Jack, Alexis, Spencer, Victoria, Isabella and Nicholas. Jeanne was looking forward to the birth of two other great grandchildren later this year. Many good friends and neighbors also survive, including her "Club Ladies"
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband John Penniall. Funeral Services will be held on Monday at Noon in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will follow in the Dundee Twp. East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee.

Eileen A. Sherman
Eileen A. Sherman, 69, died in her home of cancer, February 10, surrounded by her family. She was born in Chicago, January 9, 1935, the daughter of Henry and Anne (Ewald) Hochberger. Eileen was a 49 year resident of Elgin. Over the years she worked for U-46 as a school bus driver, and a bookkeeper and receptionist for several businesses. She then studied to become a medical technician at Quest Diagnostics (formerly MetPath Inc. and Brown Laboratories) for 25 years retiring this past March.
Eileen was an avid photographer and had her photos shown in exhibitions at ECC. She also loved to travel and, most recently, traveled to China in November with two of her daughters.
She is survived by her children, Betty (Steve) Rauschenberger of Elgin, Chuck (Lota) Sherman of Pearl City, HI, Ruth (Jim Lassoie) Sherman of Ithaca, NY, Mark (Hilda) Sherman of Huntington Beach, CA, Joan Sherman of Elgin and Marianne (Al) Burton of Palatine; her best friend and companion, Don Nix of St. Charles; his sister, Ginny (George) Bachouros of Raleigh, NC; and her brother Jerry (Gretchen) Hochberger of Bartlett; her grandchildren, Mike and Hank Rauschenberger, John and Audrey Sherman, and Brian and Kara Burton; and her nieces, nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Bill Bergman.
Memorial visitation will be held o Saturday, February 14, 2004 from 4-8 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be private in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jayne Shover Easter Seat Rehabilitation Center, 799 South McLean Blvd, Elgin, IL 60123.

Mary C. Smith
Mary C. Smith, age 72, formerly of Streamwood died Tuesday, February 10, 2004 surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter. She was born December 14, 1931 in Limerick, Ireland to Michael and Anne O'Grady Purtill. Her world revolved around caring for her children. She was an excellent homemaker and a marvelous cook.
Survivors include two sons, Michael of Huntley and Paul (Theresa) of Elgin; five daughters, Ann (Richard) Gillette of Las Vegas, Patricia of Tennessee, Debra (Daniel) of Huntley, Maureen of Carpentersville, Catherine (Frederick) Loots of South Elgin; one brother, Seamus of London, England; nineteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas P. Smith, in November 2003; one sister, Teresa Kerley; two brothers, Sean and Henry; one grandchild, Joshua.
Visitation will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McHenry County Memorial Park Chapel, 11301 Lake (Rt. 14), Woodstock. Memorials to Breast Cancer Research would be appreciated.

Charles E. "Bud" Stewart
Charles E. "Bud" Stewart, 67, of Elgin passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at Sherman Hospital, Elgin. He was born October 21, 1936, the son of Edward and Mary Ann Allison Stewart. He had been employed by Windy City Amusements as a truck driver for twelve years.
Surviving are his two sons, Kenneth I. Stewart of Elgin and Rodger Allen of Zion; a daughter, Gwen Renee Stewart of Texas; two stepdaughters, Sheree Colborn of Elgin and Rebecca Colborn of Belvidere; his special companion, Cheryl Kendall; three grandchildren, Jessica Lynn Stewart and Jacob and Hope; three brothers, Donald Stewart of South Elgin, Frank (Nellie) Stewart of Elgin, Richard Stewart of Union; two sisters, Ann Bigham of Bardstown, Kentucky, Mary Jane (George) Haggios of Mammoth Springs, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert, Leonard, and Jerry.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 14, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral and Cremation Services, Elgin Chapel. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held Saturday from 12:00 noon until the time of services.

Edward J. Zander
Edward J. Zander, 71, of New Smyrna Beach, FL formerly of Sleepy Hollow died Tuesday, February 10, 2004 in Florida. He was born in Chicago on June 9, 1932. He was the son of Edward J. and Magdalena (nee Gastornoski) Zander. Mr. Zander was a former resident of Sleepy Hollow for over 20 years.
He was a former 40 year employee of State Farm Insurance. He retired as the Regional Sales Claim Manager. He was an active member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, West Dundee, a former church usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus Siena Council #8596.
He is survived by his wife Norma Besten Zander of Florida; his son, Craig (Maureen) Zander of Fox Point, WI; his daughters, Pamela Cash of Dallas, TX, Gail (Robert) Christensen of Sleepy Hollow and Beth (Bernard) O'Neill of Hartland, WI; seven grandchildren, Patrick and William Cash, Carolyn and Meredith Zander, Madeline Christensen, Megan and Michaela O'Neill; two sisters, Sr. Rita Zander, BVM of Chicago and Esther Gliot of Bolingbrook, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Lou (nee Bushbaum) Zander on May 2, 1997.
Family and friends will meet for funeral mass on Monday, February 16, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Catherine of Siena Church, West Dundee. The Rev. David Austin will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dundee Twp. East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee and on Monday in church from 9:00 a.m. until time of mass.

Karen Patrice Homstad
Karen Patrice Homstad, 64, formerly of La Crosse and Viroqua, Wisconsin, passed away February 1, 2006, at her home in Gilberts, Illinois.
She was born in La Crosse on February 20, 1941, to Milnor and Edith Homstad, Karen graduated from Viroqua High School in 1958 and Viterbo College in 1962. She received a Master's Degree in Education from Northern Illinois University in 1988.
Karen's 38-year career as an art teacher started in Wisconsin in 1962. From 1966 to 1970 she taught in Department of Defense Overseas Schools in Paris, France and Frankfurt, Germany. She taught in the U-46 school district in the Elgin, IL area from 1971 until her retirement in May 2000
Karen was a devoted daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, friend and teacher as well as a gifted and creative artist. Family and friends, art and photography, books, music, travel and sports were among her many loves.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary Christine Willis of Fostoria, Ohio, Mrs. Stephen (Ingrid) Swearengin of Carrollton and Signe Homstad of Dallas, Texas; three brothers, James of Lady Lake, Florida, John of Cordenons, Italy, and Joseph of La Crosse; brother-in-law, Stephen Swearengin; and sister-in-law, Maria Homstad (wife of John); six nieces and nephews, Christopher and Brendan Swearengin (sons of sister Ingrid), Caitlin, Kaleigh, Trevor and Neil Homstad (children of brother John).
A Celebration of Karen's Life will be held in the Heritage Room at The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way on TODAY, Monday, February 13, 2006 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Special tributes will be made between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.

Those serving as pallbearers wil lbe brothers, James, John and Joseph; brother-in-law, Stephen Swearengin; and nephews, Christopher and Brendan Swearengin.
After the burial, family and friends are asked to join the family for a gathering at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School.

Harold E. Krepel
Harold E. Krepel, 86, of Elgin, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2006 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital. He was born on January 21, 1920 in Round Lake, IL, and was the son of Paul and Carrie Krepel.
Harold served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a truck driver. He was an avid roller skater and bowler and enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by his three children, Nancy (Bob) Kelso of Johnsburg, IL, Paul (Candace) Krepel of WI, and Ray Krepel of Macomb, IL; five grandchildren, Matthew, Ryann, Scott, Kate, and Mark; two sisters, Henrietta Peters of TX and Viola Horn of Elgin. He is also survived by a nephew, Charles (Helen) Fox of Elgin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Angeline in 2003; his brother, William Krepel; and his sister, Fern Phillips.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 15 from 4:30 PM until 7:30 PM at Madison Funeral Home. Private burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park. Memorials to Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Arrangements by Madison Funeral Home, (847) 741-1128.

Kenneth W. Ulsaver
Kenneth W. Ulsaver, 94, of Elgin passed away Saturday, February 10, 2001 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin.
He was born October 16, 1906 in Elgin, the son of Wallace and Myrtle Ulsaver.
He had been a resident of Elgin all of his life. He had been employed by Simpson Electric for over 50 years before retiring. He was a veteran, serving in the Army during World War II.
Surviving are a daughter, V. June (James) Fillmore of Elgin; a son, Robert (Carole) Ulsaver of Marengo; five grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and a sister, Bernice Meyer of Maggie Valley, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Letha Trumbo Ulsaver; two brothers, Edward and Edwin; a sister, Mildred; and a granddaughter, Sharon.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 11 AM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Paul Hancy officiating. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be held Monday from 6 to 8 PM in the funeral home.

Mervin Loren Antholz
Mervin Loren Antholz, 81, passed away in Council Bluffs, IA, Sunday, February 9, 2003.
Born October 11, 1921 to Henry and Minnie (Dirks) Antholz, Elk Creek, NE.
He was a World War II veteran. Formerly of Elgin, IL and Lincoln, NE. He worked at Elgin Watch Factory in Lincoln, NE 1946-1958, was transferred to Elgin, IL when the factory in Lincoln closed. Retired at age 80 after 56 years of service to the same company.
He leaves to mourn his passing his daughter, Sue (Ron) Payne of Council Bluffs, IA; two sons, Richard Antholz of Bennet, NE and Robert (Stephanie) Antholz of Lincoln, NE; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; a brother, Lester Antholz of Omaha, NE; his former wife, Margaret Armstrong of Bennet, NE; friend, Goldie Ganoe of West Dundee, IL; nieces and nephews; and numerous friends and co-workers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a grandson.
Services will be Thursday, February 13, 2003 at 11 AM in the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street. Interment Lincoln Memorial Park with Military Honors by American Legion Post #3.
Memorials may be made to the family.

Lucille Elizabeth Combest
Lucille Elizabeth Combest, 88, of Elgin, Illinois, formerly of Ashland, Oregon, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2003 at her daughter's home in Elgin.
She was born October 6, 1914 in Whitewater, WI to Thomas W. and Elizabeth M. (nee Greiten) McKelvey.
Lucille graduated from Maple Park High School in 1933. After high school she was employed as an auditor for the State of Illinois and the Kane County Treasurer's Office in Geneva, IL. From 1940 to 1943 she was the Postmaster in Maple Park, IL. She then worked for Cutler-Hammer and Midwest Co-Op Wholesale in Milwaukee, WI.
She returned to Illinois after marrying James L. Combest, where she raised her family and returned to work in 1959 for David A. Noyes & Co. in Elgin. She became a registered representative of the New York Stock Exchange in 1962. Lucille was active in many organizations during her time in Elgin, including, Cosmo Pals, National Secretaries Association, Altrusa International, Elgin Symphony League, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She retired after 25 years with David A. Noyes to Ashland, Oregon.
Lucille became active in Ashland in volunteer and recreational programs. The Ashland Emergency Food Bank, Interfaith Care Community of Ashland, Tudor Guild of Southern Oregon, Shakespearian Festival, Rogue Valley Symphony Guild, Rogue Valley Jazz Preservation Club, Oak Knoll Women's Golf Club, "Autumn" Women, Book Club "Extraordinaire", as well as involvement in local theater, music, reading, travel, friends and family. She was also an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Ashland.
She is survived by four daughters, Wendy (Ron) Palmer, Sherry DeRaedt, Kathy Dow and Maureen Combest; three sons, Michael, Kevin and Chad (Camille) Combest; eight grandchildren, Devin and Derek (Christina) DeRaedt, Michelle (Jack) Giuffre, Danielle Palmer, Carna Combest, Chris and Shaun Dow and Clayton Combest; five great grandchildren, Tyler DeRaedt, Ashley Stewart, Haley and Alex DeRaedt and Chase Carlino; four nephews, Thomas, Bruce, Gary and Neal Dahl; and her sister-in-law, Dorothy Foote of Chattanooga, TN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Edward McKelvey; a sister, Irene Dahl; a son, Shaun Combest in infancy; and former husband, James L. Combest.
Memorial tributes in Lucille's name may be made to the Lowrie Elementary School Playground Equipment Fund in Elgin or to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 717 Siskiyou Ave, Ashland, OR, 97520.

Thyra K. Kotchuck
Thyra K. Kotchuck, age 90, of St. Charles passed away Monday, February 10, 2003 at Rosewood Healthcare Center in St. Charles.
She was born January 11, 1913 in Lily Lake, IL to John and Mary Nelson.
Mrs. Kotchuck is survived by two children, Walter (Marilyn) of Ft. Collins, CO and Katherine (Keith) Zollers, Jr. of North Aurora, IL, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and her son-in-law, Jack (Martha) Ryan of St. Charles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John in 1971, a daughter, Mary Ann Ryan, three grandchildren, James, Joanne and Gerald Ryan and by eight brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, February 14 at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street (Corner of Rt. 64 and Rt. 25), St. Charles. Rev. Andy Christianson officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery, Geneva, IL. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice, Attention Hospice Foundation, 580 Water Edge Drive, Lombard, IL 60148.
