Paul L. Smith, 71, of Elgin, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 11, 2001.
He was born December 15, 1929 in Cicero, Illinois.

Stewart Thoms Whittington
Stewart Thoms Whittington, 80, of Elgin, passed away Monday, April 9, 2001 in Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
He was born Nov. 19, 1920 in Elgin Township and was the son of Edgar and Mabel (Smith) Whittington.
Stewart had worked as a Dairy Farmer in the area for many years and also worked at Chicago Rawhide until his retirement.
He was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church of Elgin, the Kiwanis International Golden "K" Club of Elgin and the Elgin Symphony League.
Survivors include his wife, ElaineVillars Whittington, whom he married
on July 27, 1947; three children, Mary(David) Whittington Eder of Las Vegas, Nev., Christine (Dennis) Whittington Green of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Ted (Rosy) Whittington of Elgin; four grandsons, Eric Behrens, Christopher andAaron Whittington and Stewart Green; and two cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; and a brother.
Memorial Services will be 3 p.m., Saturday, April 14, 2001 in Epworth United Methodist Church, Elgin (corner of W. Highland and Randall), the Dr. Thomas Potenza officiating. Burial will be private.
Laird Funeral Home, Elgin is in charge of arrangements.
Bernice M. Cilek
Bernice M. Cilek, of East Dundee, died on April 11, 2003 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. She was born on April 3, 1909 in Letts, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fry. Bernice was a resident of East Dundee since the early 1950's and was employed at Shakeproof of Elgin for 17 years.
She is survived by her husband, Frank Cilek of 34 years whom she married
on May 21, 1968; daughters, Shirley (the late John) Boor of Gilberts and Judith Fannery at home; sister, Gloria Pope; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Flannery, sons, Bill, Harold, Joseph, two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services and interment will be private. Arrangements made by the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee.
Dorothy L. Schoonhoven
Dorothy L. Schoonhoven, 84, of Elgin, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2003 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
She was born April 26, 1918 in Chicago to Henry and Elsie (nee Knorr) Neve.
She had been a School Bus Driver for School District U-46 for 12 years. She was a life member and Past President of Watch City VFW Post #1307 Women's Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, James Schoonhoven of Rockford and Paul Schoonhoven of Elgin; her daughter, Margo (Ernst) Lauber of Elgin; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin Schoonhoven whom she married
on July 5, 1941 and preceded her on September 5, 1988; and three brothers.
Funeral Services will be on Monday, April 14, 2003 at 11 AM at the Wait Ross Allanson Elgin Funeral Chapel with Rev. Eun-Hye Choi with the First United Methodist Church, West Dundee. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be Sunday, April 13, 2003 from 3 to 7 PM at the funeral home.

Marjorie H. Hill
Marjorie H. Hill, 75, of Crystal Lake, formerly of Carpentersville, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2004 in Centegra Memorial Hospital, Woodstock, IL.
She was born in June 24, 1928 in Chicago, IL and was the daughter of Harold and Amanda Boyens. Marjorie had worked in the Dietary and Food Service departments of School District 300 and Sherman Hospital.
Survivors include her four children, Donald (Joy) Hill of Carpentersville, IL; Michael Hill of Phoenix, AZ; Donna (Doug) Oerkfitz of Crystal Lake, IL and Judith (Raymond) Samborski of MI. 14 grandchildren, Amy Jo, Anne, Brian, Sara, Katie, Amanda, Mike, Elizabeth, Dana, Tim, Stephanie, Raymond, Tony and Bradley and 12 great grandchildren.

Clara M. Chislette Marolt
Clara M. Chislette Marolt, 99, of Elgin, passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2004 in Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. She was born on September 6, 1904 in Canada and was the daughter of Menno adn Ann (Ritter) Koch. She was a member of the Woman of the Moose Lodge #799 and the Order of the Eastern Star, Elgin Chapter #212.
She is survived by three children, John W. (Sally) Chislette of AL, Jeanette Chislette of Elgin and Nancy (Gary) Esterling of West Dundee; 12 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her first husband, Herbert H. Chislette in 1955 and her second husband, Frank F. Marolt in 1986 and her son, George H. Chislette in 1985.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at 11:30 A.M. in the Wait Ross & Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 51 Center St., Elgin, with Rev. Olin Sletto officiating. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
Marie H. Thoms
Marie H. Thoms, 98 of Crystal Lake, former 95 year resident of West Dundee died Friday, April 9, 2004 in the Springs Healthcare Center at the Fountains of Crystal Lake. She was born in Mansfield, MN on December 6, 1905.
Mrs. Thomas was the daughter of August and Marie Steibler. She came to live in Dundee when she was just 10 days old, following the death of her mother. She was raised by August and Mathilde Henning. Mrs. Thoms was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of West Dundee and until her death was the church's oldest member. Mrs. Thoms loved her church and was a very active member of Bethlehem's community.
She is survived by her sons, John A. (Jean) of Littleton, CO, Richard W. (Jeannine) of Crystal Lake, Denis F. (Susan) of Cloverdale, CA and Alroy W. (Patricia) of Kingwood, TX; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alroy W. Thoms on June 23, 1965. They were married
on April 19, 1927. She was also preceded in death by her sister and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, West Dundee. Mr. Frank Hewitt, Director Of Parish Ministries, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be on Monday from 4-8 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Helen Basony
Helen Basony, 93, of Poplar Grove, formerly of Plato Center, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2005 in Belvidere.
She was born March 31, 1912 in Chicago, the daughter of Benedict and Helen (Lorenz) Mueller. Helen married
Salvator "Sam" Basony in 1932 in Crown Point, Indiana, and they resided in Chicago and in rural Plato Center.
Helen was a homemaker and in addition to raising four children, she provided support for many foster children over the years. She enjoyed card playing, crocheting and knitting.
Surviving are her four children, Ann (Stanley) Fitzi of Poplar Grove, Louis (Lisa) Basony of Fayetteville, GA, Helena Koepke of Elgin, and Cari Bausone of Westchester; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam in 1975; three sisters, Mary Johns, Catherine Fragoulas and Eva Chokus; and a step-daughter, Jennie Finkelstein.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, April 14, at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire with the Rev. James F. Fandrey of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Elgin officiating. Burial will be in the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic cemetery in Hampshire.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Daniel P. Figgins
Daniel P. Figgins, 53, of Elgin, now home with his Lord, died in the line of duty, on Saturday, April 9, 2005. He was born on March 28, 1952 in Elgin and was the son of Paul and Marilyn Figgins. Daniel was a graduate of Larkin High School in 1970, and was a veteran of the St. Charles Police Force for 27 years. He was a wonderful loving and devoted husband, father, son and brother he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was an active member of the Christ Community Church of St. Charles, IL.
Survivors include his wife, Linda, to whom he was married
on August 12, 1972; two daughters, Kristin (Ryan) Dierking of St. Charles, IL, Hillary (Jonathan) Jarvis of Nashville, TN; his father, Paul Figgins of Elgin; four brothers, Ted (Peggy) Figgins of Surprise, AZ, Ron Figgins of Springfield, IL, Doug Figgins of Indianapolis, IN and Craig Figgins of Plainfield, IL; a sister, Anitalynn (Ky) Katz of Franklin Park, IL; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn on April 30, 2002.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at 11 AM at Christ Community Church, 37W100 Bolcum Rd, St. Charles, IL, 60175. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin, IL. Franklin H. Hupe
Franklin H. Hupe, 72, of St. Charles, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2005 in Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva, IL. He was born on March 26, 1933 in Algonquin, IL. Frank was a Veteran and served in the US Army. He was the Owner and Operator of the Hupe and Sons Construction Co., building many bridges in the area, for 30 years prior to his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Mitzel-Hupe of St. Charles, IL; four children, Shauna (William) Kohler of Chicago, IL, Sheila Schwartz of Colorado, David Hupe of Nevada, Jennifer Edler of Naperville, IL; step-son, Michael (Jana) Mitzel of West Brooklyn, IL; his daughter-in-law, Anna Castoro Hupe of Algonquin, IL; his brother, Robert Hupe of Nevada; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Barbara Hupe; his parents, Walter and Hermina Hupe; his son, Daniel Hupe in 2002; his daughter, Tamara Mitzel Smith; his sister, Rosemarie Bauer.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will follow in Prairie cemetery, St. Charles, IL. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. in the funeral home.
Robert Otto LeRoy
Robert Otto LeRoy, 80, born Otto Lefkovits in Budapest, Hungary, 11/26/24. Holocaust survivor.
Beloved husband and best friend of Carol Schultz LeRoy, wonderful and devoted father of Michael (Janet), Steven (Dunia) and Cathryn (Ezra) Ilani. Much adored grandfather of Benjamin, Sarah, and Samuel LeRoy, Veronica LeRoy, Daniel, Natali, and Jacob Ilani. Loving brother of Steven (Laura) Lefkovits, the late George (the late Hedy) LeRoy, the late Margaret Maate, Gabriella, Miklos, Anna, Paul, Sandor (Tillie) Lefkovits and Jozsi (Sari) Lovas. Fond brother-in-law of James (Sheila) Schultz and the late Donna (Mort) Sapkin. Cherished "brother" of Hedy (the late Laci) Ivanyi of Budapest, Hungary. Loving uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Robert grew up in the small town of Nyirmada, Hungary. In early 1944, he and his entire family were deported to Auschwitz where his mother and father, Rezsi and Hermann Lefkovits, sisters, Gabriella and Anna and his brother, Miklos were murdered by the Nazis. His brother Paul was murdered at the Russian front where he was a slave laborer. Robert and two of his brothers, George and Steve, were taken to another camp called Bunzlau where they were forced to build dummy aircraft to fool the Allies into believing they were bombing and destroying Nazi air bases. They were tortured, beaten and starved until they were liberated by the Russians on February 11, 1945. In March of 1949, Robert immigrated to the United States and in 1951 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served with distinction until 1953. In 1953 he established his own construction company and became one of the most highly respected remodelers in the Chicagoland area. He was instrumental in writing the "Code of Ethics" for the remodeling industry at the request of the Better Business Bureau of Chicago in the late 1950's. He served as Chairman of the Contractor's Advisory Board for the City of Chicago's Department of Housing. He remained one of the most highly respected individuals in the industry. In 1977, when confronted by the growing Holocaust revisionist movement, he founded Witnesses to the Holocaust, Inc., a charitable organization whose purpose is to educate present and future generations about the history of genocide focusing on the Holocaust and to commemorate the memories of the victims of the Holocaust. He helped develop and implement the mandatory teaching of the Holocaust in Illinois Public Schools. He was a dedicated educator and public speaker who spoke before many organizations and school groups over the past 30 years.
With a strong belief in Torah and tzedakah (charity), he was a generous supporter of many charitable organizations in the Chicagoland area and in Israel as well as the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. He helped to found The Einstein Academy in Elgin, a school for academically talented students, and Congregation Shirat Shalom, a Conservative synagogue in the Northwest Suburbs.
