Philip M. Kirmse
Philip M. Kirmse, 79, of Elgin passed away Thursday, February 9, 2006 at Rosewood Care Center, Elgin after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He was born April 2, 1926 in Elgin, the son of Edward and Madolyn Dwyer Kirmse. He had been a resident of the Dundee and Elgin area all of his life and was a graduate of Dundee Community High School, Class of 1944, and attended the University of Illinois. He had been employed by the First National Bank of Elgin and then Beacon Hill Insurance Co. in Elgin before retiring. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the 161st Infantry as a Staff Sergeant. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Elgin and a member and Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #737 of Elgin. Phil was an avid gardener, self-proclaimed lousy golfer and an active volunteer in the Elgin area.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Hilton Kirmse, whom he married
on June 10, 1950; five children, Linda (Mike) Stark of Flagstaff, AZ, P. Robert Kirmse of Elgin, Brian (Bonnie) Kirmse of Elgin, Barbara (Roger) Williams of Scottsdale, AZ and Mary Sue Kirmse of Elgin; four grandsons, Dan and David Kirmse and Jared and Joseph Hanson; a brother, Jerry Kirmse of Carpentersville; four sisters, Katherine (Thomas) McEnerney of East Dundee, Janice (John) White of Michigan City, IN, Mary Dougherty of Carpentersville and Helen (William) Menke of Rockford; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Kirmse of East Dundee; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, John "Jack" and Edward "Babe" Kirmse.
Family and friends may meet at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Elgin for Mass at 10 AM Monday, February 13. Burial will follow in St. Mary's cemetery, Gilberts. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3 to 8 PM at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, Elgin and Monday from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass in the church. Blanche M. Sheffel
Blanche M. Sheffel, 84, of Elgin passed away peacefully Sunday, January 22, 2006 in the Apostolic Christian Resthaven of Elgin. She was born May 5, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Rudolph and O'Thelia (Vondracek) Sheffel.
Blanche was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Elgin and did not let her "golden years" or her health keep her on the sidelines. Though she never married
or had children of her own, Blanche considered it a blessing to actively minister children in Awana. She was also sought for counsel from the Scriptures and for her wisdom that came forth due to her close walk with Christ. Sunday mornings would find Blanche busily greeting and encouraging those who came in or went out the door into the sanctuary that she loyally attended for many years. She also volunteered at Judson College for many years for which she was rewarded with the Golden Eagle Award. Before retiring early from the corporate world Blanche, was an Employment Salary Manager and Salary Administration Manager for a large finance company.
Surviving are her counsins, Richard J. Fox and his children, Richard (Debra) Fox and Keith (Judy) Fox, and Raymond (JoAnne) Polibka and his children, David and Ann.
Survived by many friends and church members and will be dearly missed for all that she did and her great acceptance of her place in life.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 11, 2006 at the First Baptist Church, 1735 W. Highland Ave, Elgin, Dr. Jerry Cain will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the First Baptist Church or Judson College. Laird Funeral Home, Elgin is in charge of arrangements.

William A. Garcia
William A. Garcia, 43, of Carpentersville died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 in Melrose Park.
He was born on May 27, 1957 in Chicago, the son of William R. and Lorraine (nee Witkowski) Garcia.
Bill was a life long resident of the Carpentersville area. He was an Eagle Scout and was a 1976 graduate of Irving Crown High School. He was a 1977 graduate of the Denver Automotive & Diesel College. He was a 25 year employee of Navistar of Melrose Park where he worked as an Experimental Engineering Test Technician. He was a member of the U.A.W. Local #2293 and a member of the Carpentersville Moose. Bill was a loving brother and devoted to his many nieces and nephews.
Survivors include a brother, Donald (Rhonda) Garcia of Carpentersville; four sisters, Marguerite (Richard) Papenbrok of Carpentersville, Janet (Steve) Jones of Hampshire, Carol Garcia of St. Charles and Annette (Ray) Puckett of Kingston; many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother in infancy; and a nephew in infancy.
Funeral services will be 9:15 a.m., Saturday in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee to St. Monica Church of Carpentersville for Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee.

James W. Haynes
James W. Haynes, 82, of Carpentersville, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 at Sherman Hospital, Elgin.
He was born in Lacan, Ala. on March 9, 1918, the son of John Henry and Myrtle (nee Couch) Haynes.
He was a 44 year resident of Carpentersville. He worked as an Iron Worker for over 40 years and a member of the Iron Workers Union Local #1. Following retirement for the past 10 years he was an employee of Walmart in East Dundee. James was an extremely loyal Chicago Cub Fan.
Survivors include a son, Danny (Kathy) Haynes of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Teresa (Harry) Patrick of West Dundee and Debbie (Harry) Doscher of Sleepy Hollow; two grandchildren, Mandi and Tim Patrick; two brothers, Clyde andDaniel, both of Alabama; three sisters, Gladys Rampich of California, Pauline Smith of Alabama and Kathleen Wilhite of Tennessee. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta Haynes on June 29, 1999; a sister, Ethel; and two brothers, Earl and Louie.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee, the Rev. Greg Lucas officiating. Burial will follow in the Windridge cemetery, Cary.
Visitation will be on Saturday from 12 noon until the time of services.
Earl H. KurtzEarl H. Kurtz, 88, of Elizabethtown, PA, formerly of Elgin, died on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 at Hershey Medical Center PA,
He was born in Richland, Lebanon County, the son of the late Michael and Annie Nissley Kurtz.
He was the husband of Esther Myer Kurtz and they were married
for sixty years in March.
He was a member of the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, where he served as a deacon, lay visitor, Sunday school teacher, and at one time was the moderator of the church board. A dairy farmer, Mr. Kurtz studied dairy farming at Penn State University from 1930-31. From 1935-38 he taught at New Cumberland High School and at Wilmington High School, Wilmington, DE from 1938-40.
Mr. Kurtz graduated from Elizabethtown College in 1937 with a BA in business education. He received his master of arts degree from New York University in 1938 and an honorary doctorate from Elizabethtown College in 1982. From 1940-57 he worked as the treasurer for the Brethren Publishing House in Elgin, IL. A licensed minister, Mr. Kurtz pastored churches in the Church of the Brethren denomination in Batavia, IL and Wilmington, DE. He was also the first pastor of the Lampeter Church of the Brethren. From 1957-79, he was the treasurer for Elizabethtown College. After retirement, he worked at the college on an interim basis as treasurer until 1982. He also served on the board of for the Camp.
Survivors include his wife, Esther Myer Kurtz of Elizabethtown, PA; son, John M. Kurtz (Ellen Manobla) of New York, NY; daughters, Suzanne M. Kurtz of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and Kathryn L. (Samuel) Frankhouser of Ephrata, PA.; and a brother, Leon J. Kurtz of Lebanon, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m., Saturday at the Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, PA
Visitation is 2-3 p.m., Saturday at the Church.

Dora F. Mengarelli
Dora F. Mengarelli, 90, of Elgin died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 in her home.
She was born in Italy on Oct. 6, 1910, the daughter of Eugene and Ernestine (nee Menchi) Fodaroni.
She was an eight year resident of the area and was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church of Elgin.
Survivors include her three children, Doris (Francis) Golbeck of Elgin, Ronald (Kay Kummerow) Mengarelli of Gilberts and Raymond (Jeanine) Mengarelli of Palatine; seven grandchildren, Lisa (Jim Sommerfield) Golbeck of Cary, James Golbeck of Chicago, Jeff (Sheri) Golbeck of Orland Hills, Joseph (Candace) Golbeck of West Chicago, Robert Mengarelli of Alabaster, Ala., Michael Golbeck of Elgin and Michael Mengarelli of Arlington Heights; five great-grandchildren, TJ,Julia, Samantha, Skylar and Anthony; and a sister, Helen Marcuccilli of Skokie.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guido Mengarelli Sr.; a son, Guido Mengarelli Jr.; and a brother, Bruno Fodaroni.
Funeral services will be 9:15 a.m., Monday in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee to St. Thomas More Church of Elgin for Mass at 10 a.m, the Rev.Richard Russo officiating. Entombment will follow in the Queen of Heaven cemetery, Hillside.

Helen R. Rylko
Helen R. Rylko, 76, of Gilberts, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
She was born Feb. 19, 1924 in Chicago, the daughter of Albert and Gertrude (Czek) Malinowski.
Helen married
Mitchell G. Rylko on May 20, 1944 in Chicago. They were longtime residents of Carpentersville before moving to Gilberts in 1971. She will be remembered as a loving wife and mother who cherished her visits with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Mitchell; five children, Mitchell G. Rylko Jr. of Hampshire, Michael Rylko of Buyck, Minn., Maryann (Ronald) Stroinski of Gleason, Wis., Martin (Betty) Rylko of South Elgin and Marvin Rylko of Genoa; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Anthony (Mary Ann) Malinowski of Chicago.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 10 at the James A. O'Connor Funeral Home, 11603 E. Main St., Huntley, the Rev. Dominic Cassidy officiating. Burial will be in the Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee.

Rosana Dorthea Scharringhausen
Rosana Dorthea Scharringhausen, 81, of Hampshire died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 in her home.
She was born July 29, 1919 in Chicago, the daughter of Archie and Mina (Randall) Schonemann.
Mrs. Scharringhausen is survived by her husband of 58 years, Wesley; her children, Laura (Robert) Hyde of Glen Ellyn, Fred (Joyce) Scharringhausen of Gold Canyon, Ariz., Barbara Flock of Aurora, Kevin (Kris) Scharringhausen of Batavia, Jack (Kristin) Scharringhausen of St. Charles and Thomas (Holly)Scharringhausen of Batavia; ten grandchildren, B.J. (Amy) Flock, Kelly, John, Thomas and Jill Scharringhausen,Nicholas (Lindsey) and Ginevra Scharringhausen, Carrie, David and Katlyn Scharringhausen; two great-grandsons, Dylan and Jacob; a sister, Barbara Granquist of Phoenix, Ariz. and a sister-in-law, Nadine Schonemann of Phoenix, Ariz.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Scharringhausen was preceded in death by a brother, Randall Schonemann; and a granddaughter, Kelsey Leanne Scharringhausen on June 19, 2000.

Ervin Louis Ambro
Ervin Louis Ambro, 80, of Elgin, died February 5, 2002. Born January 27, 1922 to John and Mary Ambro of Universal, IN.
Mr. Ambro has been a resident of Elgin for 43 years. Retired from Pack Rubber Co., Lake Zurich, IL after 37 years. Worked at Jewel-Osco Liquor Department on Larkin Ave., Elgin. World War II Medical Technician, included assignments with Light Mountain Div., 82nd Airborne. Active Boy Scouts, St. Laurence Parish in the 1960's. Member of the "Honorary" Mother's Club at St. Edward High School. Vice President, Treasurer and Member of St. Edward Booster Club.
Survived by his ex-wife and devoted companion Helen Louise, his daughter Patricia and son George (Janice). Three granddaughters: precious Jocelyn, beloved Bethany and beautiful Kimberlee. Brother John (Martha) of Oregon, sister Ann Brothers of Toledo, Ohio and Martha "Evelyn" Hilmes of Toledo, Ohio. Joyce (Chuck) Jokela, Colorado. Many nieces and nephews and Siersat and Vang.

Petra Castro
Petra Castro, 75, of St. Charles, died at her home Friday, February 8, 2002. She was born April 16, 1926 in Cardenas, Mexico, the daughter of Faustino and Simona (Granada) Martinez.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Elgin. Petra was pleased to say that for her, a great accomplishment in her life was raising nine children, as well as becoming a friend to her adult children. She delighted in becoming a grandmother and being involved in their lives. Petra enjoyed Mexican folk-tales, her flower garden and was known as a great cook.
Mrs. Castro is survived by her children, Alejo (Elaine) Castro of Bernie, MO., Juanita (Thomas) Benavidez of St. Charles, Severo Castro, Jr., of St. Charles, David Castro of Woodstock, John Castro of St. Charles, Regina (Mark) Morgan of St. Charles, Carol (Charles) Walker of South Elgin, Belen (Larry) Hood of St. Charles and Patsy Castro of South Elgin; 15 grandchildren; seven great grandchilren; her sisters, Consuelo, Josefina, Maria and Anita Martinez and one brother, Pedro Martinez, all of Mexico.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Castro was preceded in death by her husband, Severo Castro on december 12, 1999 and two brothers, Vidal and Ismael Martinez.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, February 11, 2002 at St. Patrick Church, 408 Cedar Street, St. Charles, with Fr. Joseph B. Linster, celebrant. Burial will be in River Hills Memorial Park, Batavia.
Visitation will be held from 3-5 pm, Sunday, February 10, 2002, at the Norris Funeral Home, 100 South Third Street, St. Charles, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. A closing prayer service will be held at 7:45 pm, with Capt. Todd Thielke officiating.
