Judge Walter Bieschke
Judge Walter Bieschke, of Elgin, was a lawyer who "made law" as a trial attorney. In July in 1975, he got his turn at the other side of the bench. Prior to his Judgeship, he had 25 years experience as a practicing trial attorney. He served as a Circuit Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County for 22 years, serving as a Motion Judge and in the Chauncery Division, but primarily in the Law Division, Jury Trial Section.
In 1958, Judge Bieschke won a verdict for a minor injured in an accident at a construction site. Bieschke based his case on an electroencephalogram which showed epileptic damage. The case set the law on the admissibility of such tests into evidence.
In 1970, Judge Bieschke obtained the first jury verdict for a plantiff at common law in a lead poisoning case. He won a substantial award for the parents of a child who died after eating lead filled plaster.
His experiences as a trial attorney made him "come to the realization that most of my clients got their first and only day in court" at the trial level. Most people cannot go beyond the appeal. Therefore, I consider it most important that we have knowledgeable judges as at the trial court level, with a sound background in trail court experience. Litigation makes up the primary business of the court.
Judge Bieschke flew 35 combat missions as a radio operator and gunner in B-17 Flying Fortresses in World War II, receiving the Air Medal with Three Bronze Clusters for valor. After the war, he resumed his education at the University of Notre Dame where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and later his Law Degree.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; two sons, Walter and Marcus. Four grandchildren, George, Benjamin, Ava, and Chloe.
