Helen B. Turlo
Helen B. Turlo, 78, of Elgin passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2002 in Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
She was born May 13, 1924 in Chicago, IL., and was the daughter of Benjamin and Clementine Kowalski. Helen was employed at Motorola for many years prior to her retirement. Member of Provena St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, Aquatic Arthritic Instructor at the Taylor YMCA. She received the Distinguished Volunteer Award at the YMCA in 2000.
Survivors; two children, Helene (John) Corcoran of Elgin, Kathleen (Lee) Kivi of Northbrook, IL; five grandchildren, Stephen (Betty) Corcoran, Debra (Sean) Kenny, Jennifer, Erik and Karyn Kivi: three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Daniel and Jacquelyn: two sisters and one brother.
preceded in death by her parents, husband, Stephen Turlo in 1988.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 17, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, Elgin with Rev. Walter Turlo officiating. Burial will be in Maryhill cemetery, Niles, IL. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 - 9:00 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and on Friday from 10:15 a.m. until time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation of the Greater Chicago area.

Amado Garcia Jr.
Amado Garcia Jr., 72, of Elgin passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004 in Loyola Medical Center, Maywood, Illinois. He was born October 9, 1931 in San Benito, Texas, the son of Amado and Consuelo Garcia. He was an Army veteran serving in the Korean conflict. He was an educator for 44 years teaching Science classes to high school students in the Chicago suburbs. While at Arlington Heights High School, he managed the concession stand for school sports and served as faculty advisor of the Student Rifle Team. He was a student himself taking summer classes to further his own education while also raising a family.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; his children, James M. (Ann) Garcia of Hebron, IL, Daniel (Audrey) Garcia of Cary, IL, Patricia (Frank) DonLevy of DeKalb, IL, Catherine Garcia of Buffalo Grove, IL; a granddaughter, Jamie Lynn Garcia; step children, Mark (Betsy) Fill of West Dundee, IL, Bernadette (Eric) Dworianyn of Libertyville, IL, Michael (Alma) Fill of Bensonville, IL and Matt (Julie) Fill of Round Lake Beach, IL; step grandchildren, Daniel, Matthew, Chris, Kara, Paul, Tim, Anthony, Andrew, Austin and Danny; and step great grandchildren, Amy and Abby.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Luis; and a sister, Amelia.
Funeral Mass will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 215 Thomas More Dr., Elgin with the Rev. Geoffrey Wirth officiating. Burial will be in River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 9 PM at the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin and on Wednesday from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Orville W. Gullang, Sr.
Orville W. Gullang, Sr., 89, of Huntley passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Crystal Pines Nursing Home, Crystal Lake. He was born December 1, 1914 in Chicago, the son of Olaf and Margaret Gullang. He was a former Lockmaster of McHenry, IL and upon retiring, worked for Warner Offset Printing in Elgin as a courier. He was the last surviving member of the original Algonquin Founders Day Committee. He was its first Chairman and from 1961 thru 1968 was parade chairman. He was a life long member of Algonquin Moose Lodge #1193 and a member of Elks Lodge #2582 of Brooksville, FL.
Surviving are a daughter, Gerri (Ted) Stockwell of Wauconda; three sons, Orville (Pat) Gullang Jr. and Walter (Priscilla) Gullang both of Algonquin and Carl (Sue) Gullang of Aurora; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and a great great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Myrtle; and a sister, Clarice.
Services and burial will be private. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to the building fund at The Congregational Church of Algonquin. Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services, Algonquin is in charge of arrangements.

Geraldine D. Kane Marshall
Geraldine D. Kane Marshall, 93, of Elgin passed away Friday, May 14, 2004 at Apostolic Christian Resthaven, Elgin. She was born June 7, 1910 in Armstrong, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Marilla Hockett Felkey. She had been a resident of Elgin for many years. She had been an employee of Ackemann's Department Store in the Shoe Department for many years before retiring. She was a member of Evangelical Covenant Church of Elgin.
Surviving are her three daughters, Marlene (Jack) Shales and Karen (Paul) Heidenreich both of Elgin and Mary (Rev. Randy) Gauger of Savoy, Illinois; two sons, Gary (Sandy) Kane of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Greg (Patt) Kane of St. Charles; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Alfred Kane and Lauren Marshall; son, Gordon Kane; grandson, John T. Kane; sister, Doris Cartwright; and brother, Donald Felkey.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 20, at 11 AM at Evangelical Covenant Church, Elgin with Rev. Herbert Hedstrom and her son-in-law, Rev. Randy Gauger officiating. Burial will be private in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 9 PM at the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and Thursday from 10 AM until the time of services in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Evangelical Covenant Church or Apostolic Christian Resthaven Nursing Home.

Barbara J. "Jean" Johns
Barbara J. "Jean" Johns, 71, of Elgin died Sunday, May 15, 2005 at her home. She was born on November 8, 1933 in Elgin, the daughter of George and Zita (Nee Herrin) Schuman. She was a lifelong resident of Elgin and was a member of the King of Glory Lutheran Church in South Elgin. Jean was an expert seamstress and very talented. She designed and made numerous wedding gowns. She also spent much of her free time crocheting afghans and donated many of them to area nursing homes.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard "Dick" Johns. They married on March 27, 1953. A son, Richard (Valerie) Johns of Woodstock. She was the loving grandmother of Shelly Johns of Elgin and Eric (Leslie) Johns of Cortland, IL; two great-grandchildren, Katrina and Abigail Johns; two sisters, Elizabeth (Fred) Lohmeier of Janesville, WI and Patricia Gerdau of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter, Deborah J. Johns.
Graveside Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 11 A.M. in the Lakewood Memorial Park cemetery, Elgin with the Rev. Keith Perry, officiating. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Provena St. Joseph Hospital Cancer Care Center. The Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Moulton Schmidt
Jack Moulton Schmidt, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2005. He was born September 14, 1918 in Elgin, IL and graduated from Elgin High School. In 1939 he moved to Oregon City, OR to work in the paper industry. He married Gladys Cook of Stevenson, WA in 1942. Jack served in the US Army as an Infantry Officer during World War II with the 151st Infantry Regiment of the 38th Infantry Division in Hawaii, New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon.
After the war, he returned to Stevenson where he and Gladys raised their family. He was co-owner of Columbia Loggers Supply and Hardware. From 1965 to 1993, he served on the Board of Directors of Elgin Corrugated Box Company in Elgin, IL, a Schmidt family company founded in 1893 by his great grandfather, Casper Schmidt. In 1969, he retired from business and moved to Scottsdale, AZ where he lived with his wife until her passing in 1991. Recently, he moved back to the northwest to an assisted living facility in Vancouver, WA.
He is survived by two sons, Gordon of Gresham, OR and Jack, Jr. of Kailua, HI; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A grave-side service with military funeral honors was held at the Skamania County cemetery in Stevenson, WA on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to any organization serving the needs of US military personnel and their families.

Edna (Skowbo) Siracusa
Edna (Skowbo) Siracusa, 84, of East Dundee, IL, passed away May 13, 2005, at Governors Park Nursing Home, Barrington, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Philip, Howard and Stuart.
Edna is survived by one brother, John of Grafton, WI and her dear husband of 59 years, Stephen J. Siracusa of East Dundee; one son, Dennis (Beverly) of Charlotte, NC, two daughters, Diane Siracusa (Tad Bero) of Barrington, IL and Joan Wakeman (Randy) of Littleton, CO and eight grandchildren.
Edna grew up in Michigan and Iowa and later went to work for the United States government. During World War II, she was assigned to work at the Nuremburg, Germany trials under the direction of Chief Justice Robert Jackson. While raising her family, Edna's many talents included soprano opera singing, gourmet cooking and clothing design.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in West Dundee on Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at 10 a.m. Reverand David Austin will be the celebrant.

Beth W. Swanson
Beth W. Swanson, 90, a longtime resident of Marengo died Monday, May 16, 2005 at her home. She was born in Starks Station, IL on March 30, 1915, the daughter of Richard and Mary (McEwan) Wesemann. On March 2, 1935, she married Arthur C. Swanson in Lily Lake, IL.
In 1976, she graduated with a degree as an LPN from Kishwaukee College in Malta at the age of 60. She and her husband had spent many, many years farming. She loved gardening, reading, traveling, playing cards and dancing. She was a kind and compassionate person who enjoyed encouraging and looking after others.
She is survived by five children, Janet Hayes and Verne A. (Dorothy) Swanson both of Marengo, Bonnie "Twid" (Richard "Smiley") Wagner of Hampshire, Carolyn (Fred) Rose of Lakeland, Florida and Cheribeth (Enrique) Piedra of St. Petersburg, Florida; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; a sister, Wilma Meyer of Elgin; her caregiver, Cecylia Sadowska; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur in 1973; her great grandson, Dylan Wagner; her brother, Forrest Wesemann; and her sister, Ruth Petersen.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Riley United Methodist Church, 9316 Riley Rd, Marengo. The visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, May 19, 2005 from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service at 12 Noon with Pastor Jackie Wills officiating. Interment will be at Riley cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to Riley United Methodist Church or to the Marengo Rescue Squad, 110 Telegraph St., Marengo, IL, 60152. Chester M. Banas, age 48 of Minneapolis, MN, formerly of Maple Park, IL died Friday, May 14.
Survived by daughter and son, Renee and Andrew; mother Ann Banas, sisters Maryann Vaszily, Deanne Forston (Rodney); brother Charles Banas (Tarri); also many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Arthur R. Kimball
Arthur R. Kimball, 72, of East Dundee died Monday, May 17, 2004 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 27, 1932, the son of Harold B. and Genevieve (nee Thompson) Kimball. Mr. Kimball was a long time employee of USPG in Elgin for many years where he worked as a Tool & Die maker. He was a Korean War veteran and served in the United States Air Force. He was a volunteer at the Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin. He was an avid gardener and was an aficionado of Jazz music.
He is survived by his wife, Jane (nee Patterson) Kimball; four children, Kathy (Joe) Schroeder of Kenosha, WI, Kate (John) Kerin of Park Ridge, Andrew B. Kimball of Chicago and Amy (Mark) Sobczak of Arlington Heights; four grandchildren, Jake and Sarah Kerin of Park Ridge and Mary Ellen and Sam Arthur Sobczak of Arlington Heights. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2004 at 2 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 1 PM until time of service. Beloved husband of the late Myrtle L. (nee Bromund). Dear father of Lester Jr. of Colorado and Larry R. of Scottsdale. Fond brother of Adeline Kober. Loving grandfather of six and great-grandfather of thirteen.
