Charles Westphal
Charles Westphal, 80, of Elgin passed away Sunday, June 10, 2001 in his home.
He was born Oct. 30, 1920 in Elgin, the son of Charles and Josephine Schlund Westphal.
He had been a resident of Elgin all of his life. He was employed by Shakeproof Division of Illinois Tool Works for 38 years as a machinist before retiring. He was a veteran WW II serving in the Navy. He was a life member of American Legion Post 57 of Elgin.
Survivors include three daughters,Judith (Allan) Shelton of South Elgin,Barbara (Richard) Howenstein of Elgin and Pamela (Dennis) Ashley of Elgin; a son, Robert Charles Westphal of Elgin; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Westfall of West Palm Beach, Fla.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Fehrman Westphal in 1993; and four sisters.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, the Rev. Ralph McFadden officiating. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m., Tuesday in the funeral home.
Loren "Army" Armstrong
Loren "Army" Armstrong, 76, of South Elgin passed away Friday in Sherman Hospital. He was born November 8, 1924 in Metropolis, IL and was the son of Edward and Dora Armstrong. Loren was a Veteran having served in the US Army during WWII. He became a resident of South Elgin in 1945. Loren graduated from Technical School and went to work for Art Wolff, Bunge's, and Hans and Sons Plumbing and Heating prior to his retirement.
Member of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local #501, also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Elgin and a life member of the Elgin VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Lou Ann (Martensen), whom he married
on April 17, 1956; also three daughters, Tammy Armstrong and Judy Anderson, both of South Elgin and Mary (Roland) Spadaro of Memphis, TN; two granddaughters, Amanda and Samantha; two sisters, Belda (Roy) Peters and Violet Schnieder, bother of Metropolis, IL; and seven nephews.
He is preceded by his parents, one brother, two sisters, and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 12:30 P.M. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Sunday starting at 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Little Angels Nursing Home.
Beatrice Hines
Beatrice Hines, 94, of Elgin died Friday, June 29, 2001 in her home.
She was born August 11, 1906 in Algonquin, the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Hines.
She had been a resident of Elgin most of her life and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Elgin.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and two brothers.
Private Funeral Mass will be held Monday at 10 AM in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Edward Seisser officiating. Private burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park.
Friends may call in the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin on Sunday from 6 to 9 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Joseph Hospital Foundation Fund.
Sharon L. Kagel
Sharon L. Kagel, 55, of Woodstock, died Friday, June 29, 2001 at the Centegra Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock.
She was born January 13, 1946 in Elgin, the daughter of William and Verona (Mellema) Mursewick.
She married James Kagel on August 19, 1967 in Elgin. She had been employed in the Customer Service Department with Black Dot in Crystal Lake.
Mrs. Kagel is survived by her husband, James Kagel of Woodstock; a son, Benjamin Kagel of Forest Park; a daughter, Sally (Scott) Reede of Elgin; her parents, William and Verona Mursewick of Elgin; two brothers, Ronald Mursewick and Michael (Ginny) Mursewick, all of Elgin; and a sister, Paula DeFarno, also of Elgin.
An infant son preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM on Monday, July 2, 2001 at the Schneider-Leucht-Merwin and Cooney Funeral Home in Woodstock. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 3, 2001, time to be announced at the funeral home, in the funeral home. Interment will be in the McHenry County Memorial Park cemetery in Woodstock.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Bertha J. LaValle
Bertha J. LaValle, 80, of South Elgin passed away Saturday, June 30, 2001 in her home.
She was born September 8, 1920 in Bristol, South Dakota, the daughter of James and Bertha Lobben Fakles.
She had been a resident of the Elgin area all of her life. She and her husband, Lawrence owned LaValle Toy and Hobby Shop in Glen Ellyn before retiring.
Surviving are her daughter, Catherine (Jim) Meyer of South Elgin; four grandchildren, Anthony (Amy) Abboreno, Lisa (Todd) Highland, Jeffrey and Michael LaValle; four great grandchildren, Edward, Gregory, Kristine and Michael; a sister, Ann Fakles of Elgin; and a brother, Clarence (Dorothy) Fakles of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Husband, Lawrence P. LaValle on April 20, 1999; and a brother, Peter Fakles.
Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at 10 AM in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Algonquin with Rev. Rodel Peji officiating. Burial will be private.
Visitation will be held Monday from 3 to 9 PM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and Tuesday from 9 AM until the time of Mass in the church.
Memorials may be given to Parkinsons Disease Research.
Leona M. Thurnau
Mrs. Leona M. Thurnau, 96, of Lebanon, Indiana passed away Thursday, June 26, 2001 at Witham Memorial Hospital, Lebanon, IN following an extended illness.
Mrs. Thurnau was born on May 19, 1905 in Dundee, IL, the daughter of the late William and Laura (Wessel) Schulze.
Mrs. Thurnau was married
on November 11, 1926 in Roselle, IL to Harvey Frederick Thurnau. Mr. Thurnau died in February 1970. Mrs. Thurnau attended schools in Dundee, IL where she resided most of her life until moving to Lebanon in 1992. While living in Illinois, she was a factory employee. She worked in the Elgin, IL area for Elgin National Watch Company, McGraw Hill Factory, and Haegger Pottery until she retired in 1970. She then lived in Florida and Mississippi until she moved to Labanon in 1992 to live with her granddaughter, Valerie Richardson. Mrs. Thurnau was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and playing bingo with friends. She was a member of Christ Church the Lutheran of Zionsville.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Mrs. John (Valerie) Richardson of Zionsville, IN, Ms. Linda Frisbee of Ottawa, Kansas and Mr. James Neagle of Kearney, MO; a sister, Mrs. Sylvia Will of Mesa, AZ; seven great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Barbara Neagle; and a brother, Russell Schulze.
Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at the Dundee Township cemetery in Dundee, IL with Rev. Dr. James Will, a nephew, officiating. Interment of her ashes at Dundee Township cemetery will follow the service.

Marcel A. Brisebois
A memorial service and reception for Marcel A. Brisebois, 39, of Sleepy Hollow, will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Willow Creek Church Chapel, 67 East Algonquin Rd., South Barrington.
Born June 4, 1963, in Waterbury CT, he finally surrendered after a valiant battle with melanoma skin cancer Wednesday evening, June 26, 2002 at home while surrounded by family and close friends.
Mr. Brisebois was employed by ABCO Product in Miami, FL as VP of Sales and Marketing. He was known and respected in the business world as a man of dependability and integrity. He was a graduate of Western Connecticut State University.
Marcel was an extraordinary father to his two children, Jaclyn (10) and Dean (4). He was the beloved husband of Deborah-Marie Brisebois (Lubitski). He is also survived by his parents, Marcel and Murielle (Pronovost) Brisebois, of Oakville, CT; brothers, Michael and Norman Brisebois; sisters, Denise Dunn, France Nadeau, and Janette Black; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Mary G. Gunter
Mary G. Gunter, age 95 of Elgin passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002 in her home. She was born April 19, 1907 in Simpson, Illinois the daughter of William and India Bell Simpson Thomas. She had been a resident of Elgin for the past 37 years.
She was a member of Plumfield Christian Church, Plumfield, IL.
Surviving are her daughter, Wilma T. (Kenny) Ganow of Elgin; four grandchildren, Robert (Suzanne) Freeman of Pasadena, TX, Tom (Sharon) Freeman of Elgin, Don Delyn Gunter of South Elgin, Tammie Freeman of Elgin; two great grandchildren, Troy (Jennifer) Freeman of Irving, TX, Alison (Matthew) Carlson of Glendale Heights, IL; two step grandchildren, Kenny Dale Ganow of Hawaii and Thomas David Ganow of California; three step great grandchildren, Matthew, Steven and Jacob Gostelle; daughter in-law, Sharon Gunter of South Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Delano Gunter; four brother and four sisters; step granddaughter Cathie Gostelle.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be in Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services in the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Provena St. Joseph Hospital Hospice.
Samuel L. Smith Jr.
Samuel L. Smith Jr., 53, of Elgin, passed away June 26, 2002. He was born on June 19, 1949 to Samuel Smith and Onealia Lee-Smith. Survivors include his parents; two children, Samuel Smith Jr. III, of Elgin, Tasha Smith of Elgin; five sisters; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by a sister, Lena Smith and a brother, Robert Smith.

JoAnn K. Dingel
JoAnn K. Dingel, 85, of Elgin passed away Sunday, June 22, 2003, with her family in Durango, CO where she resided for the last three years. She was born on March 19, 1918 in Indiana and had been an Elgin area resident for 50 years. She graduated Valedictorian of her class from Elgin High School in 1936. She and her husband shared many interest together, including Indian Folk Lore and traveling to remote areas of Western United States. She was a beloved parent to her children and grandchildren and found happiness in helping others.
Surviving: a daughter, Karren Little of Durango, CO; a son, David R. Dingel of Galena, IL; two granddaughters: Keri and Amy Dingel of Elgin; two sisters: Virginia Hunter of Elgin and Christine Sunderman of Elgin; and a brother, James Hansen of Elgin.
