Bert E. Cadney
Bert E. Cadney, 76, of Plato Center passed away peacefully at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, IL, Saturday afternoon, February 1, 2003, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born July 2, 1926 in Chicago, IL, the only child of Matt and Madeline (Edwards) Cadney.
Bert grew up in Chicago, IL where he attended Catholic schools and , following graduation, entered the Army where he was stationed in Okinawa. Following discharge from the Army, Bert returned to Chicago and began working for the Chicago Transit Authority. Although his job description changed through the years, the CTA would become his career for the next 38 years.
Photography had been Bert's hobby since his childhood. It continued always to be his love and became his livelihood as well. From publicity to construction to accidents, Bert Photographed the everyday life of the CTA;. His work earned him the nick-name "Flash" and his willingness to take on photographic challenges, earned him the respect of others.
Work also introduced him to his wife, Ernestine S. Flient. They shared a love of horses and western clothing but Ernestine was the equestrian and Bert, the "urban cowboy". On June 19, 1982, he was united in marriage to Ernestine at the Drake Hotel, Chicago. Their Dude Ranch honeymoon took them to AZ and New Mexico and thus began the trail ride of the next 20 years.
Bert and Ernie made their home in Prospect Heights where they bought their first horse together. They later moved to Elgin and following Bert's retirement, they began to look for sone wide-open spaces that could be home for them as well as their horses. Their search lead them to Mike and Marilyn Edgerton's. Over a cup of coffee, a life time friendship began. Mike introduced Bert to the Kane County Rangers, mounted patrol, an organization that became very important in Bert's life.
By 1988, Bert and Ernie had moved to the present family home in Plato Township and, two years later were blessed to become the parents of a son, Eric. They became active in the Fox Valley Saddle Association where Bert made many friends. Ironically, Barb Rosenberg, who first welcomed them to the Association, was also with them when Bert breathed his last. Disarmingly charming, Bert was a master joke and story teller and enjoyed the role of host. A "ham" at heart, Bert also held a ham radio operator's license and made friends the world over as WA9EWD "Wiskey Alpha 9 Every Women's Darling". He loved electronic gadgets, especially radio controlled cars with which he sometimes herded his horses. Frugal, funny and fond of being fashionably tardy to formal functions, he is now, at last, politically correct as "the late Bert Cadney".
In addition to his wife, Ernestine, he is survived by two sons, Bertram and Eric; a granddaughter, Nina Cadney; many cousins; and a countryside of friends who will long remember the man who could always make them laugh.
Friends may call at visitation hours Saturday, February 8, 2003 from noon to 4 PM at Conley Funeral Home, 116 @. Pierce St., Elburn, IL. Funeral Services will follow at 4 PM. The Rev. Katherine Lawes, Pastor of the Community Congregational United Church of Christ Church, Elburn, will officiate. Following cremation, private family committal services will later be held.
Memorials in Bert's name may be made to either the Fox Valley Saddle Association Building Fund, P.O. Box 481, Elgin, IL, 60120 or the American Cancer Society, C/O P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL, 60119.
