Emil Emerick Mayer
Emil Emerick Mayer, 87, of Elgin, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001 in Rosewood Care Center, Elgin.
He was born in Elgin on May 27, 1914, the son of Emerick and Julia (Balogh) Mayer.
A lifelong Elgin resident he was owner and president of Beck's Office Supplies.
He was a veteran of WW II, having served in the Army Air Force and the 78th Infantry Division in Germany. Among the military honors he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Emil was a member of the American Legion Post 57; the Kiwanis Club of Elgin; the Elgin area Historical Society; the Downtown Neighborhood Association and a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
He was active in Boy Scouts in the 20's & 30's (Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster) and in Downtown Promotional Activities in the 60's and 70's. He served as Chairman of the Downtown Organization in 1964 while also serving as a member of the Red Cross.
Survivors include a sister, Irene (Carl) Wegmann of Elgin; a sister-in-law,Florence (Ernest) Mayer of Soquel, Calif.; five nieces, Janet Hopkins and Susan Mayer of Bartlett, Cheryl Glover of Capitola, Calif., Nancy Mayer of Freeland, Wash. and Kim Reed of Carol Stream; and five nephews, Donald Mayer of Soquel, Calif., David (Suzanne) Erickson of Decatur, Ga., John (Linda) Erickson of Kansas City, Mo., Gary Wegmann of Elgin, and Robert Mayer of Burlington.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Erickson; and two brothers, Emerick J. Mayer II and Ernest Mayer.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Saturday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, the Rev. Ralph McFadden officiating. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Friday in the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross.

Henry J. "Sonny" Siems
Henry J. "Sonny" Siems, 80, formerly of Dundee passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2001 in Sun Lakes, Ariz.
He was born in Carpentersville in 1920.
Well known in the automobile business for 65 years, with his beloved wife, Elaine, at his side for 58 years. He started his career in Dundee, Ill, at the age of 16, selling used cars. The family moved to Merrill, Wis. in 1955, where he was the Oldsmobile-Cadillac dealer for 11 years. He and Elaine moved to Scottsdale, Ariz. in 1966 continuing his love of selling used and antique cars.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine; two daughters, Diane Siems and Barbara (Dr. Robert B.) Cloar, all of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; three step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services were held at United Church of Sun Lakes.

Margaret Haertel Smith
Margaret Haertel Smith, 93, of Arlington Heights, formerly of Mt. Prospect died Monday, July 23, 2001 in The Lutheran Home, Arlington Heights.
She was born July 13, 1908 in Dundee.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son, Richard (Nancy) Smith; a daughter, Clare Sims; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; and two sisters, Dorothy Goers and Esther Pearson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert A. Smith; and a daughter, Mary Jetton.
Funeral Services will be 12 noon, Saturday in The Lutheran Home, 800 W. Oakton Ave., Arlington Heights, Pastor William Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee.
Visitation will be 10 a.m., Saturday until the time of services in The Lutheran Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lutheran Child and Family Services, 333 W. Lake St., Addison, IL. 60101.

Harriet Sund Szilasi Boncosky
Harriet Sund Szilasi Boncosky, 86, of Carpentersville, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2003 in Loveland, Ohio. She was born on July 29, 1917 in Carpentersville, IL and was the daughter of William and Anna Sund.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Carpentersville for over 40 years and was a member of the Fox Valley Rebekah Lodge #532 in Carpentersville for over 60 years.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Szilasi of St. Louis, MO and Richard (Kathy) Szilasi of Loveland, OH; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Jean Gerdau of Carpentersville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Raymond Sund; a sister, Marion Nelson.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, July 28, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St., West Dundee with the Rev. Pamela Pendexter officiating. Private inurnment will follow in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Greater Cincinatti Chapter, 644 Linn St. Suite 1026, Cincinatti, OH 45203.

Thomas A. Falese
Thomas A. Falese, 78, of Elgin, former 74 year resident of Carpentersville, died Friday, July 25, 2003 at the Provena-St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. He was born in Carpentersville on September 5, 1924, the son of James and Theresa (nee Rotundo) Falese. Tom attended St. Catherine of Siena Grade School and graduated in 1938. He was a 1942 graduate of Dundee Community High School. He served in the United States Army Air Force with the 1040th Division. He earned the rank of Sergeant. He was former Post Master of Carpentersville for 20 years. For many years, he was co-owner and co-operator of Floyd's Restaurant in Carpentersville. Tom was an avid golfer and a member and past president of the Elgin Country Club. He was a member of Elgin BPOE (Elks Club).
Survivors include his wife of 55 years: Audrey Jean (nee Strommenger) Falese. They married on June 27, 1948. One daughter: Renee (Jeffery) Nelson of Wheaton, one son: Matthew (Janice) Falese of Elgin, three granddaughters: Toni L. Roesslein, Devin L. Roesslein and Taylor Owens, one grandson: Cole Thomas Nelson. One sister, Mary Caporale of Elmwood Park, one sister-in-law: Jackie Chesbrough of Sleepy Hollow, three nieces: Lorraine (Jim) Frost of Carpentersville, Paulette (Donald) Dohring of Carpentersville and Sharon Falese Puffer of West Dundee, five nephews: Lawrence (Krysha) Sorce of Elgin, James Masi of West Dundee, Philip (Nancy) Masi of Schaumburg, Charles (Christine) Caporale and Gabriel (Janice) Caporale both of Elmwood Park. Many many great nieces and nephews and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Matthew and Floyd, five sisters: Rosa, Liberata, and Josephine Falese, Stella Masi Gennarelli, Carmella Sorce, one nephew: Nicholas Masi.
Family and friends will meet for Funeral Mass on Monday at 10 a.m. in the St. Catherine of Siena Church, West Dundee. Burial will follow in the River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-7 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee and on Monday in the church from 9 a.m. until time of mass. Please omit flowers; memorials may be made to the Provena-St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

Marilyn K. Peterson
Marilyn K. Peterson, 71, of Carpentersville died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. She was born in Chicago on September 14, 1931, the daughter of Laurids and Frieda (nee Fredricksen) Gronfeldt. Mrs. Peterson was a 47 year resident of the Carpentersville area. She was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed spending time at her summer home in Wisconsin.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years: Richard. They married on June 13, 1953, three daughters: Joann (Paul) Larimer, Gail Vardakis, and Sandra Hartmann, all of Carpentersville, four grandchildren: Christina, Michael, Paul and Nicholas, one great grandson: Anthony, one sister: Eileen (Peter) Rodgers of Prospect Heights and five nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her son-in-law: Jon H. Hartmann on October 3, 2002.
Funeral Services will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial to follow at Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be on Monday from 3-9 p.m. in the funeral home. Please omit flowers; memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Syster (Sis) Cecelia Cirrincione Prechodnik
Syster (Sis) Cecelia Cirrincione Prechodnik, age 85, died peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2003 at Mesquite Care Center. She was born March 25, 1918 in Geneva, Illinois to Carl and Martha Jane Ball Loberg. She married C.J. Cons Cirrincione. He preceded her in death. She later married Joseph Prechodnik. He also preceded her in death.
Sis was a resident of Elgin, Illinois most of her life. She moved to Henderson, Nevada in 1993 and later to Mesquite, Nevada in 1998. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Catholic Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Konny (Lloyd) O'Dell of Mesquite, Nevada and Martha (Dan) Bjick of Williamsburg, Virginia; one son, Joe (Barb) Prechodnik of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Schlattman of St. Paul, Minnesota and Ruby Schuman of Placerville, California; numerous nieces and nephews.
Sis was preceded in death by two sons, Jack and Jerry Cirrincione; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be held Monday, July 28, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Hope cemetery in Elgin, Illinois. Visitation will be Sunday, July 27 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at O'Connor & Homeier Funeral Home, 364 Division Street in Elgin. Rosary will be recited Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Laurence Church.

Lea R. Safranek
Lea R. Safranek, 88 of Carpentersville died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. She was born on april 6, 1915 in Anaconda, Montana the daughter of Philip and Emma (nee Bilodeau) Bechard.
She was a 33 year resident of the Carpentersville area, a very active member of St. Monica Catholic Church and the Ladies Sodality.
She is survived by her three children, Maryanne (George) Clark and Paulette (Bill) Wetendorf both of Carpentersville and Phil (Ginny) Safranek of Glenview; grandchildren, Debbie (Ted), Patty (Rande), Nicole, Dawn, Tiffany, Scott & Lauren; great-grandchildren, Danny, Chris, Teddy, Terry, Timmy, Nicholas, Michael; one sister, Yvette Bechard of Carpentersville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years, Paul J. Safranek on December 27, 1998, whom she married on April 29, 1939; two sons, Wayne and Gary.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee to St. Monica Church, Carpentersville for Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be on Monday from 3:00-9:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Please omit flowers; masses would be appreciated.

Joshua Sherman
Joshua Sherman, 47, of Elgin, died Friday, July 25 at the home of his loving sister, Mary Jo in Genoa surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born Nov. 11, 1955 in Elgin to Byron S. and Lillian (Brennen) Sherman.
Josh was the owner and proprietor of Schock's Greenhouse in Elgin, IL and an avid outdoorsman who truly enjoyed life. While on Earth he taught us to enjoy the sacred in the ordinary, the beautiful in the mundane, and to enter into the sacrament of the present moment. He fought a courageous battle against cancer, even purchasing a fishing pole during his last day on Earth. There wasn't a fish that did not fear him.
Survivors include his children, Ryan Oak Sherman and Megan Elizabeth Sherman; his three brothers, Mark (Patricia) of Chetak, WI, David (Karen) of Elgin, and Matt (Mary Ellen) of Algonquin; five sisters, Elizabeth (George) Tucker of Montgomery, Ala., Judith Hoy of Geneva, Mary Jo (Jim) Stepniewski of Genoa, Edna Jean (Chris) Sack of Kansas City, MO., and Amy (Gordon) Whiting of St. Charles; and good friends, Shannon Payson, Rick Hoy and Pam Hoffman. Many nieces and nephews also survive him.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wait Ross Allanson Elgin Chapel with Rev. Edward Bergen of Immanuel Lutheran Church Crystal Lake officiating. Burial will be private. Friends may greet the family after 4 p.m. on Monday until the time for the services at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Josh's name may be made to P.A.D.S., 164 Division Street, Elgin, IL or to the charity of your choice. "Oh te doh te."

Dennis W. Williams
Dennis W. Williams, 60, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2003, on Great Inagua Island, Bahamas. He was born May 26, 1943, in Rockford, Illinois, the son of Claire and Esther Geiger Williams. He lived in Elgin from 1948 until 1966, graduating from Elgin High School in 1961. He was an engineer for NASA from 1966 until 1972, stationed in Freeport, Bahamas. He was employed for the last 15 years, as Director of Communications for an architectural firm in Melbourne, Florida, where he resided. He was one of the world's foremost authorities on diving underwater caves and was instrumental in the discovery of a new class of crustacean, Remipedia. He was also responsible for the formation of Lucayan Cavern National Park in Freeport, Bahamas, which now protects the underwater cave where Remipedia was first found.
Surviving are his wife, Alexandra Penn Williams; his daughter, Lora; his sons, Kirk (Cristin) Williams, of Lily Lake, IL, Keith (Karen) Williams, of Las Vegas, NV, and Panos Galanopoulos, of New York, NY; one sister, Cheryl (Karla Christ) Jones of South Elgin; 4 grandsons, Christian, Conner, Cameron and Carson Williams, two granddaughters, Breanna Williams, and Abby West and several nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Peter Penn.
Services will be held Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Culley's Funeral Home, Tallahassee, Florida.
